The best remote accounting jobs for Nigerians are bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, payroll support, and general (staff) accountant roles. Employers abroad hire people in Nigeria for these roles because the work is done in cloud software and checked through reconciliations rather than face-to-face. Roles that need a local licence to sign anything, such as audit partner or US tax representation, are much harder to get from Lagos or Enugu.

Many Nigerian accountants have the skills already. The harder part is finding ads that will actually accept someone living in Nigeria and showing a foreign employer you can work in their software, under their accounting standards and in their time zone. This guide ranks the main accounting roles by how open they are to Nigeria-based applicants. For each role it covers the tools and qualifications employers ask for, how to read an ad's location rules, and the setup you need at home before you apply.

Quick answer

Nigerians have the best chance with remote bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable and staff accountant roles, especially with small US, UK and European firms or global companies that hire across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Learn QuickBooks Online or Xero and strong Excel. An ACCA or ICAN qualification helps for accountant-level roles. Before applying, check that the ad's country list or time-zone rule includes Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1).

How we ranked these remote accounting roles

"Best" here means best for someone living in Nigeria, not best paid in the abstract. We looked at three things:

  • Openness to Nigeria-based workers: whether companies routinely hire for the role across borders, often as contractors, or mostly hire inside one country.
  • Entry route: whether you can get in with software skills and some experience, or need a professional qualification and years of work first.
  • Licence barriers: whether the core work needs a local licence that a Nigerian qualification doesn't give you.

This ranking is the WorkRemote team's editorial judgement based on how these roles are advertised. It is not a count of vacancies. Openings change weekly, so treat it as a guide to where to focus.

1. Remote bookkeeper

Bookkeeping is the most common way into remote accounting from Nigeria. Bookkeepers record transactions, categorise bank feeds, reconcile accounts and prepare monthly reports, usually for small businesses in the US, UK, Canada or Australia that use QuickBooks Online or Xero.

The work is done entirely in cloud software, so where you live matters less. A lot of it is contract or part-time, which suits clients who can't justify a full-time accountant. The catch is that you'll be working under US GAAP or UK rules and their sales tax or VAT, not just Nigerian practice, so you need to learn how your client's country handles things like sales tax categories.

Our guide to becoming a remote bookkeeper covers the path in detail, and the remote bookkeeper salary guide shows pay in dollars and naira. If you're starting from zero, remote bookkeeping jobs for beginners covers the first steps.

2. Remote accounts payable specialist

Accounts payable (AP) specialists process supplier invoices, match them to purchase orders, schedule payments and fix vendor queries. Growing companies, especially software firms with suppliers in many countries, often run AP as a shared remote team.

AP suits Nigerians because the volume work happens in tools like Bill.com, NetSuite, SAP or Xero and is checked against clear controls. It also leads somewhere: AP experience is a common stepping stone to staff accountant. See how to become a remote accounts payable specialist and the accounts payable salary page.

3. Remote accounts receivable specialist

Accounts receivable (AR) specialists raise invoices, apply customer payments, chase overdue balances and keep the ageing report clean. In UK firms the collections side is often called credit control.

AR involves more talking than AP, because you're emailing and sometimes calling customers about money they owe. That makes clear written English and a polite but firm tone part of the job. Read the remote accounts receivable career guide and what remote AR specialists earn.

4. Remote staff or general accountant

A staff accountant handles month-end close: journal entries, accruals and prepayments, bank and balance-sheet reconciliations, and supporting the controller with reports and audits. This is where ACCA or ICAN training starts to pay off.

These roles open to Nigeria less often than bookkeeping. Many companies want their accountant in a time zone that overlaps with headquarters, or in a country where they already have a legal entity. Global firms that hire "EMEA" accountants are the best target, because Nigeria sits inside EMEA and on UTC+1. The remote accountant career guide covers skills and how to get hired. For month-end, budgeting and costing work in particular, see remote management accountant jobs.

5. Remote payroll specialist

Payroll specialists calculate pay, deductions and statutory filings. The skill transfers, but the rules don't: US payroll, UK PAYE and Nigerian PAYE all work differently. Employer-of-record and global payroll companies hire payroll staff across regions, and some roles need knowledge of a particular country's payroll.

If you already run Nigerian payroll, a realistic first target is a role covering African countries for a global payroll provider. See how to become a remote payroll specialist.

6. Senior accountant or financial controller

Senior accountants own the close, the reconciliations and the audit file. Controllers own the whole accounting function. Both are open to experienced, qualified Nigerians, mostly with global companies hiring within a time-zone band. Our financial controller jobs guide covers that step, and the remote finance manager guide covers the wider leadership path.

7. Financial analyst (FP&A)

Financial planning and analysis (FP&A) analysts build budgets, forecasts and variance reports. This is closer to modelling than bookkeeping, and it rewards strong Excel or Google Sheets work. Accountants who enjoy the "why did costs rise" question often move here. See the remote financial analyst career guide.

8. Tax accountant

Tax work is tied to one country's law, which limits remote access. A US firm preparing US returns wants US tax knowledge. Some roles also need registration or a licence to sign returns or represent clients before the tax authority. Nigerians with Nigerian tax expertise have more chances with firms serving Nigerian or African clients. Read the remote tax accountant guide and the upcoming remote tax preparation jobs article.

9. Internal auditor

Internal audit is more open than external audit, because external audit opinions must be signed by licensed auditors in the company's country. Remote internal audit and controls-testing work does exist, often for groups with African operations. See how to become a remote internal auditor and remote audit jobs for experienced professionals.

Accounting experience also transfers to compliance analyst work and fraud analyst roles. Both are common at fintechs and payment companies that hire across Africa.

What "remote" means in an accounting job ad

Most remote accounting ads are not open worldwide. Before you spend an hour on a cover letter, work out which of these five types the ad is:

  • Remote within one country: "Remote, United States" or "Remote, UK" usually means you must already live there and have the right to work there. Skip these.
  • Remote within a list of countries: the company employs people only where it has an entity or an employer-of-record arrangement. Nigeria has to be on the list.
  • Remote within a time-zone band: for example "within UTC −3 to +3". Nigeria (UTC+1) fits the band, but the ad may still list specific countries as well.
  • Worldwide contractor roles: you invoice as an independent contractor from Nigeria. These are common in bookkeeping and AP.
  • Freelance projects: one-off clean-up jobs, catch-up bookkeeping or year-end prep, found on freelance platforms or through direct outreach.

Real examples of reading the location rules

Example ads are useful because they show how the wording works. As of October 2026:

  • Oyster, a global employment platform, published an Accounts Payable Analyst role on its own job board on 8 October 2026. The role is remote and requires being "within +3/-3 UTC". The listed locations are Spain, Romania, Hungary, Portugal, Poland and South Africa. Nigeria's time zone fits the band, but Nigeria is not on the location list, so a Nigerian applicant would need to confirm with the company before applying.
  • On the job aggregator Remote Rocketship's Nigeria accounting page, Oyster's Senior Accountant (EMEA) role was tagged "Anywhere in the World" when we checked. That tag is broader than the location rules Oyster sets on its own AP ad. Aggregator labels can be wrong or out of date, so always open the employer's original ad.
  • Remote.com's careers page says the locations shown under each job title are "for advertising purposes only". It tells applicants to check the "Practicals" section at the bottom of each advert for location or time-zone restrictions. That's where the real eligibility rule sits.

The lesson: a time-zone match is not the same as eligibility. Read to the bottom of the ad. If it's unclear, email the recruiter one short question: "Are you able to hire someone based in Nigeria for this role, as an employee or contractor?" For a longer method, see how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.

Skills and tools foreign employers ask for

Foreign employers rarely ask whether you know accounting. They ask whether you know their stack. Across remote accounting ads, these come up again and again:

AreaTools or skills
Small-business ledgersQuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage
Mid-size and enterprise ERPNetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics
Payables and expensesBill.com, Expensify, Ramp
SpreadsheetsExcel or Google Sheets: XLOOKUP, pivot tables, SUMIFS
StandardsUS GAAP for US clients, IFRS for most others
CommunicationWritten English, Slack, clear handover notes

US GAAP versus IFRS

Nigerian professional training, including ICAN and ACCA, is built on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). US companies report under US GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). For bookkeeping and AP the difference rarely matters. For staff accountant roles at US companies, learn the main differences in areas like revenue presentation and leases, and say on your CV that you have.

Software certifications

Intuit runs a QuickBooks ProAdvisor training and certification programme through the ProAdvisor Academy. It offers certification tracks for QuickBooks Online and other products, and a short recertification exam every year. The page we checked did not list a fee, so confirm the cost on Intuit's site. A current ProAdvisor badge is one of the quickest ways to show a US small-business client you can use their software. Xero runs a similar advisor certification. Check Xero's own site for the current terms.

ACCA or ICAN for remote work?

Both are respected. Choose based on where your employers are:

  • ICAN is Nigeria's chartered accountancy body and carries the most weight with Nigerian employers and firms serving Nigerian clients.
  • ACCA is better known to UK, European and many global employers. Its syllabus follows IFRS, which helps for EMEA roles.

ACCA's fees page for Nigeria lists amounts in pounds, as of October 2026: initial registration £89 (£36 reduced), a 2026 annual subscription of £140, and £143 per Applied Skills exam at standard entry for the December 2026 session. Strategic Professional exams cost £180 to £252 at standard entry. Late entry costs much more, so book early. Check the page before paying, because fees change.

You don't need either qualification to start in bookkeeping or AP. For staff accountant and above, being part-qualified or qualified makes a real difference. Our upcoming guide to the best accounting certifications for remote jobs compares the options, including CPA and CIMA.

What remote accountants earn

Pay varies so much by role, employer and contract type that a single figure would mislead you. Here are three reference points, labelled clearly:

  • US benchmark (not what you'll be offered from Nigeria): the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median pay of $83,680 a year for accountants and auditors in May 2025. That's for people working in the US. Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually well below US local pay, because many companies adjust pay to location or hire Nigerians as contractors at international, not US, rates.
  • Nigerian local remote roles: when we checked in October 2026, a Lead Accountant role from Trading Partner Ltd marked "Nigeria, Remote" on Remote Rocketship listed ₦200,000 to ₦300,000 a month (the listing was dated 20 March). Remote roles with Nigerian companies pay in naira at Nigerian rates.
  • Foreign employers: the role pages for bookkeepers, AP and AR specialists show dollar ranges with sources.

Example (hypothetical): a US firm offers a Nigeria-based contract bookkeeper $1,500 a month. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that's about ₦2,043,000 a month before transfer fees and tax. That's for illustration only, not a market average. The upcoming article on how much remote accountants earn goes into real ranges.

Setting up to work remotely as an accountant in Nigeria

Time zones and month-end

Accounting has deadlines that don't move: month-end close, payroll cut-off and payment runs. You need to know when they fall in Lagos time.

  • UK clients: London is on GMT from 25 October 2026, so Lagos is one hour ahead. A 9am to 5pm UK day is 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter and 9am to 5pm in summer.
  • US East Coast clients: New York is 5 hours behind Lagos in summer and 6 hours behind in winter (from 1 November 2026). A 9am Eastern standup is 3pm in Lagos in winter.
  • Central Europe: the same time as Lagos in winter, one hour ahead in summer. That's the easiest overlap of all.

Expect late evenings during close week if your client is in the US.

Power, internet and data security

Close week is the worst time for NEPA to take light. Have an inverter or solar backup that can run your laptop and router for a full working day, and two internet sources, such as a fibre or 4G router plus a MiFi or phone hotspot.

You'll also be handling bank logins, payroll data and supplier bank details. Use a password manager, turn on two-factor authentication everywhere, keep client files off shared family laptops and never use public Wi-Fi without the client's VPN. Employers will ask about this in interviews.

Getting paid and tax

Most foreign employers pay Nigeria-based accountants through contractor platforms like Deel or Remote, or straight into a dollar account. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares Grey, Raenest, Payoneer, Wise and others. If you're unsure whether you'd be a contractor or an employee, read contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you. Your income is still taxable in Nigeria: see tax for remote workers in Nigeria. As an accountant you'll be expected to keep your own records in order.

How to get your first remote accounting job from Nigeria

  1. Pick one target role. Bookkeeper or AP if you have under two years' experience, staff accountant if you're part-qualified with close experience.
  2. Match the software. Get a QuickBooks Online or Xero certification, and practise on demo company files until you can reconcile a month without checking notes.
  3. Rewrite your CV for foreign readers. Name the software, the size of ledger, the number of entities, the close timeline ("closed books by working day 5") and the standards you used. Spell out Nigerian acronyms.
  4. Build a small proof pack. A sample reconciliation, a cleaned-up mock ledger or a short month-end checklist you wrote. Remove any real client data.
  5. Filter for eligibility first. Use EMEA, Africa, Nigeria and worldwide filters, then open the original ad and read the location section.
  6. Apply steadily and track it. Keep a spreadsheet of where you applied, the location rule and the follow-up date.
  7. Prepare for a practical test. Many firms send a short reconciliation or journal entry exercise. Our accountant interview questions help with the conversation part.

Mistakes and scams to avoid

  • Applying to US-only or UK-only ads. They waste your time and the recruiter's, and the right to work there is usually non-negotiable.
  • Listing "Microsoft Office" instead of real skills. Write "Excel: pivot tables, XLOOKUP, reconciliations of 2,000+ lines" if it's true.
  • Hiding Nigerian experience. Present it properly. Reconciling a Nigerian bank's statement under IFRS is real experience.
  • "Payment processing" or "financial agent" offers. Ads that ask you to receive money into your personal account and forward it are not accounting jobs. They can make you a money mule, which is a crime. A genuine employer never routes its funds through a new hire's personal account.
  • Paying to get hired. Training fees, "software licence" fees and "onboarding deposits" are red flags. Read how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian accountant work remotely for a US company?

Yes, if the company is willing to hire someone based in Nigeria, usually as an independent contractor. US companies often hire Nigerians for bookkeeping, AP and AR. Roles that need US licensing, such as signing audit opinions, are not realistic from Nigeria.

Do I need ACCA or ICAN to get a remote accounting job?

Not for bookkeeping or accounts payable, where software skills and experience matter most. For staff accountant and senior roles, part-qualified or qualified status in ACCA or ICAN makes you much more competitive. ACCA tends to be better known abroad.

What is the easiest remote accounting job to get from Nigeria?

Bookkeeping is usually the most accessible, followed by accounts payable. Both rely on cloud tools such as QuickBooks Online, Xero or Bill.com, and clients regularly hire contractors abroad for them.

Are there entry-level remote accounting jobs for Nigerians?

There are some, but true entry-level remote roles are scarce, and many ads ask for one to three years' experience. A faster route is local bookkeeping or AP experience, even part-time, plus a software certification. Then apply to junior remote roles. See remote jobs for Nigerians with no experience for wider options.

Does EMEA in an accounting job ad include Nigeria?

Nigeria is geographically in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), but many EMEA ads still list specific countries where the company can employ people. Read the location section of the original ad. If Nigeria isn't named, ask the recruiter before applying.

Is US GAAP knowledge needed for remote accounting jobs?

For staff accountant roles at US companies, it helps a lot. For bookkeeping and AP it rarely matters. Nigerian training is IFRS-based, so learning the main US GAAP differences is a worthwhile investment if you target US employers.

How are remote accountants in Nigeria paid?

Usually in dollars through a contractor platform such as Deel or Remote, or by direct transfer to a dollar account or app like Grey, Payoneer or Wise. Nigerian companies pay remote staff in naira. Compare fees before you choose a payment method.

Key takeaways

  • Bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable and staff accountant roles are the most realistic remote accounting jobs for Nigerians.
  • Licensed work such as audit sign-off and foreign tax representation is hard to do from Nigeria. Remote internal audit and support roles are more open.
  • Foreign employers hire for software skills first: QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite and strong Excel.
  • "Remote" rarely means worldwide. Check the country list and time-zone rule in the original ad, not an aggregator tag.
  • ACCA is better known abroad. ICAN carries the most weight in Nigeria. Neither is required for bookkeeping or AP.
  • US salary figures are benchmarks, not offers. Nigeria-based remote pay is usually lower.
