Remote bookkeeper salary for Nigerians
Published offshore ads for remote bookkeeping staff in Africa paid about $16,600 to $23,200 a year as of October 2026, depending on whether the job is clerk-level reconciliations or full bookkeeping. Those figures come from South African ads for UK employers, because we could not find ads with published pay aimed at Nigerian applicants. Treat them as a reference, not a promise.
For comparison, the US median for bookkeeping clerks was $50,670 in May 2025. Remote employers hiring from Africa pay well below that, but well above typical Nigerian local pay.

Remote bookkeeper pay by level
Yearly pay in US dollars for remote bookkeeper roles open to people outside the US and UK, then the same figures in naira a month.
| Level | Dollars a year | Naira a month |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | $16,643 to $18,090 | ₦1,889,000 to ₦2,053,000 |
| Mid | $20,985 to $23,156 | ₦2,382,000 to ₦2,628,000 |
Naira at ₦1,362 to $1, 23 October 2026 (CBN NFEM weighted average), before tax and transfer fees, rounded to the nearest ₦1,000. The rate moves, so treat naira figures as a guide.
Where these figures come from
- Entry
- Remote Recruitment's October 2026 ads for reconciliations and accounts payable clerks working UK hours from South Africa: R23,000 to R25,000 a month, converted at R16.58 to $1 (25 October 2026).
- Mid
- Remote Recruitment's October 2026 bookkeeper ad (Xero, QuickBooks or Sage, UK hours, South Africa only): R29,000 to R32,000 a month, converted at R16.58 to $1. We found no published senior range open to Nigerians.
How that compares
Reference points from other markets. Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually below US and UK local pay.
- US median, bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks (BLS, May 2025) (bls.gov)$50,670 a year
- UK bookkeeper, starter salary (National Careers Service) (nationalcareers.service.gov.uk)£24,000 a year
- UK bookkeeper, experienced salary (National Careers Service) (nationalcareers.service.gov.uk)£35,000 a year
What affects your pay
Which software you know. Ads for UK clients ask for Xero, QuickBooks or Sage, and the better-paid ones add Dext, Hubdoc and UK VAT. Each tool you can use without training is one less week the client pays you to learn.
Clerk work versus full books. In the same recruiter's October 2026 ads, reconciliations and payables clerks were offered R23,000 to R25,000 a month while the bookkeeper who owns the ledgers to month-end was offered R29,000 to R32,000. Moving from one task to the whole file is the first pay jump.
Employer versus freelance. A staffing firm pays a fixed monthly amount and takes a margin. Freelancing on Upwork or directly with practices can pay more an hour, but you carry the gaps between clients.
Hours. US-hours roles push your working day into the evening. Some people charge more for that; at minimum, factor in the cost of running your generator at night.
Negotiating your offer
Ask for the pay in writing, in dollars or pounds, and ask how it reaches you (Payoneer, Deel, a domiciliary account) before the final interview. A good number paid late through an awkward route is worth less than it looks.
If a client wants to pay per hour, offer a fixed monthly fee for a defined scope instead, such as "up to 150 transactions, two bank accounts and one Stripe account". It protects you when they send six months of receipts at once, and it lets you price catch-up work separately.
Do not undersell because you are in Nigeria. Quote what the work is worth to the client: a UK owner who would otherwise pay a local bookkeeper £24,000 or more a year is getting good value at a fraction of that.
Questions people ask
How much does a remote bookkeeper earn a month from Nigeria?
There is no published standard. The clearest public numbers we found are South African offshore ads for UK firms at R23,000 to R32,000 a month as of October 2026, about $1,390 to $1,930 a month. Freelance clients set their own rates.
What is that in naira?
At ₦1,325.72 to $1 on 25 October 2026, $1,500 a month is about ₦1.99 million. Exchange rates move a lot, so keep your contract in dollars or pounds and convert only what you need.
Do UK clients pay bookkeepers more than US clients?
Not reliably. The difference that matters more is whether you own the full set of books or just one task. UK work does fit Lagos hours better, which saves you night shifts.
Will a certificate increase my pay?
Software certifications from Xero and Intuit help you get hired, and they are free. Pay rises come from taking responsibility for more of the file, handling VAT figures, and keeping clients for years.

Salaries for related roles
- Accounts Payable Specialist
An accounts payable (AP) specialist makes sure a company's suppliers are paid the right amount, once, on time, and that every bill is recorded properly. It is a well-defined back-office role that foreign companies do hire for remotely, including some, like Canonical, that hire home-based AP staff anywhere in EMEA, which includes Nigeria.
- Accounts Receivable Specialist
An accounts receivable (AR) specialist sends a company's invoices, matches incoming payments to them and chases customers who pay late. Remote AR and credit control jobs for UK and US companies are open to Africans, though many offshore ads with published pay are limited to South Africa, so Nigerians should read the location line before applying.
