This Privacy Policy explains what personal information WorkRemote.ng collects when you use our website and services, why we collect it, who we share it with, how long we keep it and the choices and rights you have. We have tried to keep it short and in plain language.
1. Who we are
WorkRemote.ng (WorkRemote Nigeria, "we", "us" or "our") runs a remote jobs platform for people in Nigeria and elsewhere. We are the data controller for the personal information described in this policy, which means we decide how and why it is used.
You can reach us about anything in this policy at jobs@workremote.ng, or by post at Atlantic Centre, Chevron Drive, Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria.
2. What this policy covers
This policy applies when you visit our website, create an account, build a candidate profile, apply for jobs, set up job alerts, become a member, send us a message or otherwise deal with us online.
It does not cover the websites or services of employers, recruiters or other third parties that we link to or that you apply to. Once your information reaches them, their own privacy policies apply.
3. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your name and email address. We sign you in with a link sent to your email address, so members do not need to create a password.
- Candidate profile: your phone number, city and country, headline and summary, years and level of experience, skills, the job categories and roles you are interested in, your salary expectation, your availability, and links to your LinkedIn profile or portfolio.
- Your CV: the file you upload to your profile or to a particular application.
- Job applications: the jobs you apply for, any cover note, your answers to an employer's screening questions, and the profile details and CV you sent at the time. If you apply by email or on a company's own website, we only record that you told us you applied.
- Job alerts and saved jobs: the searches you ask us to email you about, the email address the alerts go to, and the jobs you bookmark.
- Membership and payments: the plan you choose, your order and subscription history, and the receipts and invoices for your payments. Card and bank details are entered with our payment processor, not on our website, and we do not receive or store your full card details.
- Reviews: the name, short headline and text you submit about your experience with us.
- Messages and requests: what you tell us through our contact form, CV review requests or emails, including any details you choose to include.
Please do not include sensitive information in your profile, CV or messages (for example health details, religious beliefs or identification numbers) unless an employer specifically asks for it and you are comfortable sharing it.
Information collected automatically
- Site usage: the pages you visit, the website that referred you, the type of device you use and your approximate country. We also record actions such as searching for jobs, saving a job, starting a checkout or submitting an application, so we can understand how the site is used and improve it. We do not store IP addresses with this usage information.
- Sign-in and security: when you request a sign-in link or sign in, we record the IP address and browser used, to keep your account secure and to prevent abuse. We also use IP addresses briefly to limit repeated requests, such as many sign-in attempts in a short time.
- Cookies: see section 7 below.
Information from others
- Our payment processor tells us when a payment succeeds, fails, renews or is refunded, together with the amount, currency and an order reference.
- Employers and recruiters may tell us about the progress of an application, for example that you have been shortlisted or invited to interview, so we can keep your application status up to date.
4. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- create and manage your account and sign you in;
- show you job listings and let you search, filter and save them;
- send your applications to employers and recruiters, and keep you informed about their progress;
- provide Premium services, such as editing your CV and LinkedIn profile, applying to jobs for you, interview preparation, visa guidance and introductions to partner recruiters and companies;
- send you the job alerts you asked for;
- process payments, renewals and refunds, and keep financial records;
- answer your messages and provide support;
- review and publish member reviews;
- understand how our website is used so we can fix problems and improve it;
- keep our service, our members and our employers safe, and prevent fraud, spam and abuse;
- meet our legal, tax and accounting obligations, and establish or defend legal claims.
We do not sell your personal information.
5. Our legal reasons for using your information
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, we must have a lawful basis for using your personal information. We rely on:
- Contract: to provide the account, applications, membership and other services you ask for.
- Consent: for example when you set up a job alert or ask us to share your profile with an employer. You can withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting anything we did before.
- Legitimate interests: to run, secure and improve our service and understand how it is used, where this does not override your rights.
- Legal obligation: to keep financial records and respond to lawful requests from authorities.
6. Who we share your information with
We share personal information only where it is needed, and only as much as is needed:
- Employers and recruiters: when you apply for a job through us, or when our team applies for you as a Premium member, we share your application, profile details, CV and screening answers with the employer or recruiter for that job. If you are a Premium member, we may also introduce you to partner recruiters and companies whose roles match your profile and share your profile and CV with them for that purpose. You can ask us to stop these introductions at any time.
- Service providers: trusted companies that help us run our service, such as cloud hosting and storage providers, email service providers, analytics tools and our payment processor. They may only use your information to provide their services to us and must keep it secure.
- Professional advisers: such as lawyers and accountants, where needed.
- Authorities: where the law requires it, or where it is necessary to protect the rights, safety or property of our members, the public or WorkRemote.ng.
- A new owner: if our business or part of it is sold, merged or reorganised, your information may pass to the new owner, who must continue to protect it in line with this policy.
Your reviews are public once we approve them, showing the name and headline you gave. Your candidate profile and CV are not published on our website.
7. Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files that a website stores in your browser. We use:
- Essential cookies: to keep you signed in and to protect your account. These are needed for the site to work, so they cannot be switched off on our side.
- Analytics cookies: a random identifier that lets us count visits and see which pages are useful, without identifying you by name. On our live website we may also use third-party analytics tools, which set their own cookies and collect similar information about your visit.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block essential cookies, you will not be able to sign in. If your browser sends a privacy signal asking websites not to track you, we switch off our third-party analytics tools for your visits.
8. Emails we send you
We send emails that are part of the service, such as sign-in links, welcome messages, confirmations of your applications and updates on their progress, payment receipts and notices about failed payments. You will receive these while you have an account with us.
We only send job alerts after you ask for them; if you sign up without an account, we first email you to confirm the address. Every job alert email has a link to unsubscribe, and members can also manage their alerts from their account. If we ever send you marketing emails, we will do so only where the law allows and each one will include a way to opt out.
9. International transfers
Some of our service providers store or process information outside Nigeria. When your personal information is transferred abroad, we take the steps required by the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 to make sure it remains protected, for example by using providers in countries with adequate data protection laws or by agreeing contractual safeguards with them.
When you apply for a job with an employer based outside Nigeria, your application will be sent to that employer in their country so they can consider it.
10. How long we keep your information
- Account, profile, CV and application information: for as long as you have an account, and for a reasonable time afterwards in case you return or have questions about past applications, unless you ask us to delete it sooner.
- Payment records: for as long as tax and accounting laws require.
- Page visit records: up to 13 months.
- Job alerts: until you unsubscribe or delete them. Alert sign-ups that are never confirmed are deleted after 7 days, and alerts you unsubscribed from are deleted after about 90 days.
- Messages and support requests: for as long as needed to deal with them and keep a reasonable record.
When we no longer need information, we delete it or make sure it can no longer identify you.
11. How we protect your information
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections to our website, restricted access to personal information, and private storage for CVs. Sign-in links can only be used once and expire after a short time, and we do not store passwords for member accounts.
No method of sending or storing information online is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affecting your personal information happens, we will notify you and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission where the law requires it.
12. Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete;
- ask us to delete your information;
- object to, or ask us to restrict, how we use your information;
- receive your information in a commonly used format, or ask us to send it to another organisation;
- withdraw your consent at any time where we rely on it;
- complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (ndpc.gov.ng).
You can update most of your profile yourself from your account. To use any of your other rights, or to delete your account, email jobs@workremote.ng from the address on your account. We may need to confirm your identity first. We will respond as soon as we can and within the time the law allows. Some information may have to be kept for legal reasons, and we will tell you if that applies.
13. Children
Our service is for adults looking for work. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18; if you believe a child has given us their information, please contact us and we will delete it.
14. Links to other websites
Job listings and other pages link to employers' and other third-party websites. We are not responsible for how those websites handle your information, so please read their privacy policies before sharing anything with them.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our service or the law changes. We will change the "last updated" date at the top, and if the changes are significant we will tell you by email or with a notice on our website before they take effect.
