Yes, a beginner in Nigeria can get remote bookkeeping work. Very few jobs say "no experience needed", though. Most people get in through a side door: part-time catch-up work for small businesses, bookkeeping assistant roles at accounting firms, or accounts payable and data-processing work that grows into full bookkeeping.

Most remote bookkeeping ads we checked in October 2026 asked for software skills (QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage) and at least some hands-on practice. They didn't all ask for a degree. So the beginner's task is to learn double-entry basics and one cloud accounting package, then build proof that you can reconcile a bank account without errors.

This guide covers what remote bookkeepers do, what employers actually ask for, which ads are open to people living in Nigeria, honest pay benchmarks, the certificates worth your money and a 90-day plan to land your first role or client.

Quick answer

Remote bookkeeping is a realistic entry point for beginners in Nigeria. Expect to start in part-time, assistant or clean-up work rather than a senior full-time role. Learn double-entry bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, Excel and one cloud package (QuickBooks Online or Xero). Build a small portfolio of practice books, then apply to roles whose ads accept applicants living in Nigeria. Check location rules on every ad, because many "remote" bookkeeping jobs are limited to one country.

What a remote bookkeeper does day to day

A bookkeeper keeps a business's financial records accurate and up to date. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the work as computing, classifying and recording financial data, posting transactions, reconciling discrepancies and producing financial reports (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Bookkeepers often maintain the general ledger. Accounting clerks handle narrower tasks such as accounts payable (bills the business owes) and accounts receivable (money customers owe).

Remotely, almost all of it happens in cloud software. A typical week for a junior remote bookkeeper might include:

  • Categorising bank and card transactions in QuickBooks Online or Xero
  • Matching receipts and invoices to transactions, often with a capture tool such as Dext or Hubdoc
  • Reconciling bank and credit card accounts at month end
  • Entering supplier bills and chasing missing paperwork by email or Slack
  • Raising sales invoices and logging payments received
  • Preparing simple monthly reports (profit and loss, balance sheet) for an accountant or the business owner to review

Beginners are rarely handed tax returns or year-end accounts. Those usually belong to a qualified accountant. Your job is to give the accountant clean, reconciled books.

Bookkeeper vs accountant: why the difference matters to you

Bookkeeping records transactions. Accounting interprets them: tax, financial statements, advice. That split is why bookkeeping is more open to beginners. You can become a useful bookkeeper without being a chartered accountant. If you later want accounting work, see our guide to the best remote accounting jobs for Nigerians.

Are remote bookkeeping jobs really open to beginners?

Some are, but the honest answer is "fewer than the blog posts suggest". Of the ads we opened in October 2026, most asked for prior experience:

  • A remote Accountant/Bookkeeper role recruited through HR-EX Consulting for Lagos-based staff (posted 30 July 2026, now closed) wanted 3 to 5 years' experience, advanced QuickBooks Online and payroll skills, and daily overlap with 9am to 5pm US Eastern time (HotNigerianJobs listing).
  • A junior Account Bookkeeper ad from erpSoftapp in Yaba, Lagos (closed 26 June 2026) still asked for at least 1 year in bookkeeping, accounting or a related admin role, plus familiarity with Odoo, Xero, QuickBooks or Sage (JobNow.ng listing).
  • A fully remote Bookkeeper role supporting a UK business (posted 9 October 2026) asked for experience as a bookkeeper or accounts clerk and a solid grasp of double entry. It listed a bookkeeping certificate and UK VAT knowledge only as nice-to-haves (Remote Recruitment on Workable).

The pattern: "experience" often means "you've done real books in real software", not "you've held the title Bookkeeper for five years". The admin route counts too. That is the gap a beginner can close.

Who can apply from Nigeria: reading the location line

"Remote" doesn't mean "anyone, anywhere". Bookkeeping ads are often restricted because the employer needs payroll registration in your country, or wants local tax knowledge.

The UK-client Bookkeeper role above is a good example. It's fully remote and works UK hours, but it is open only to candidates in South Africa and pays in rand (Remote Recruitment on Workable, checked October 2026). A Nigerian applicant would be screened out, however good the CV.

When you read a bookkeeping ad, sort it into one of these:

  • Country-only remote (for example "US only" or "South Africa (Remote)"). Not open to you unless you live there.
  • Region remote ("EMEA", "Africa"). Possibly open, but check that Nigeria isn't excluded.
  • Worldwide or named-country remote ("Nigeria", "anywhere"). Open to you, usually as a contractor.
  • Freelance projects on marketplaces or from direct clients. Usually open internationally.

Our guide on how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents explains the checks in more detail. On WorkRemote, each listing on the jobs page states where applicants may live.

Skills to learn first (in this order)

The fastest route is narrow and practical. Don't start with a long theory course.

1. Double-entry bookkeeping and the chart of accounts

Every transaction has two sides: a debit and a credit. You need to know which accounts go up or down when a business pays rent, sells on credit or receives a loan. Learn the five account types (assets, liabilities, equity, income, expenses) and how a chart of accounts groups them. The UK ad above names double entry as a core requirement.

2. Bank reconciliation

This is the skill that gets beginners hired and fired. Reconciliation means confirming that the books match the bank statement, line by line, and explaining every difference. Practise until you can reconcile a messy month without guessing.

3. One cloud accounting package

Pick the software your target market uses:

  • QuickBooks Online is common with US small businesses.
  • Xero is popular with UK and Australian firms.
  • Sage still appears in UK and some Nigerian ads.

The Workable ad asked for hands-on experience with Xero, QuickBooks or Sage, with Dext or Hubdoc as a plus. Learn one properly before touching the second.

4. Excel or Google Sheets

You'll need lookups (XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP), pivot tables, filters and clean formatting. Clients often send data in spreadsheets before it ever reaches the accounting software.

5. Written communication and confidentiality

Remote bookkeepers spend a lot of time asking clients for missing receipts. Clear, polite, short emails matter. So does treating bank logins and payroll data with care.

Certificates: which are worth your money

You don't need a certificate to be a bookkeeper. BLS notes that certification is not usually required, though some workers pursue it to show competence (BLS). For a beginner with no track record, a software certificate is useful proof on a CV.

OptionCost (as of October 2026)Notes for Nigerians
Intuit Academy Bookkeeping Professional Certificate (Coursera)$39 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day trial; Coursera estimates about $160 over four monthsBeginner level, 4 courses. Financial aid listed. The Intuit exam it prepares for is US-only.
QuickBooks Online certification (Intuit)Check on Intuit's siteRequires a short recertification exam every year
Xero advisor certificationVaries by access routeCheck current enrolment on Xero's own site

At the WorkRemote house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), $39 is about ₦53,000 a month and $160 is about ₦218,000. Coursera lists the $39 price for the US and Canada, so check the price shown for Nigeria and apply for financial aid if cost is a barrier (Coursera course page). Coursera's page says the Intuit Academy Bookkeeping exam is available to people in the US only. A Nigeria-based learner can still use the course to learn, but can't count on sitting that exam.

Intuit's own training page shows QuickBooks Online certification on its accountant training path and says certified users take a short recertification exam each year (QuickBooks training and certification). We couldn't confirm current pricing or eligibility for Xero's certification, so check Xero's site directly.

What remote bookkeepers earn (honest benchmarks)

There's no reliable public figure for what Nigeria-based remote bookkeepers earn from foreign clients, so be wary of anyone quoting one confidently. Here's what verifiable sources show:

SourceMarketFigureType
BLS, May 2025US, all bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks$24.36 an hour, $50,670 a yearMedian, US-based workers
Remote Recruitment ad, October 2026South Africa residents, UK clientR29,000 to R32,000 a monthAdvertised range
erpSoftapp ad, June 2026Lagos, junior role₦80,000 to ₦170,000 a monthAdvertised range

Treat the BLS median as a ceiling benchmark, not an offer you'll get. It reflects US-based workers paid at US rates. Remote pay for people living in Nigeria is usually lower than US local pay, because employers often price roles by location or hire through contractor arrangements. The South Africa ad shows that UK clients hiring in Africa pay well below UK or US salaries. The Lagos ad shows the naira end of the market.

What moves your rate up: the software you know, the client's country, whether you handle payroll or sales tax/VAT, and how you're paid (by the hour or on a monthly retainer). For role-specific pay ranges, see our bookkeeper salary guide. How international employers set pay is covered in what determines salary differences between remote workers.

Building proof when you have no bookkeeping experience

Employers want evidence that you can keep clean books. You can create that evidence before anyone pays you.

Keep a set of practice books

Use a free trial or demo company in QuickBooks Online or Xero. Record a full quarter: sales, bills, payroll journals, a loan, a fixed asset purchase. Reconcile each month. Then export the reports.

Example (hypothetical): "Adaeze Fabrics", an imaginary Lagos fabric shop, buys stock, sells on credit to two boutiques, pays rent and takes a small equipment loan. You write a one-page summary of what you recorded, the two reconciliation differences you found (a duplicated transfer and a bank charge not recorded) and how you fixed them. That one page shows more than a certificate does.

Do real work for small businesses you can reach

Many Nigerian small businesses, churches, associations and friends' side businesses keep records in notebooks or WhatsApp. Offer to set up their books in a spreadsheet or cloud package for a modest fee or a written reference. Keep it ethical: get permission before using any figures in a portfolio, and anonymise names and amounts.

Turn admin work into bookkeeping experience

If you already work in an office, ask to take over invoicing, petty cash or expense reconciliation. The erpSoftapp ad accepted a "related administrative role" as experience. That's the door for many people.

Our guide on how to build experience before applying for remote jobs has more ideas that work across roles.

A 90-day plan for your first remote bookkeeping role

Example (hypothetical): a plan for someone with basic Excel, no accounting background and about 10 hours a week.

  1. Weeks 1 to 3: Learn double entry, the chart of accounts and the main financial statements. Do practice journal entries by hand.
  2. Weeks 4 to 6: Pick QuickBooks Online (US clients) or Xero (UK clients). Work through the vendor's free training and set up a demo company.
  3. Weeks 7 to 8: Build your practice books for one full quarter and reconcile every month. Write the one-page summary.
  4. Week 9: Rewrite your CV around tasks and tools: "Reconciled 3 months of bank and card transactions in Xero" beats "detail-oriented". List any admin finance duties you've done.
  5. Week 10: Do one small real project for a local business, with permission to describe it.
  6. Weeks 11 to 13: Apply to five to ten roles a week, focusing on assistant, part-time and clean-up work. Contact small accounting firms directly, since they often need overflow help at month end.

Expect rejections at first. A short reply asking what skill was missing is worth sending.

Nigeria-specific realities for remote bookkeepers

Time zones

Many bookkeeping clients need you online during their working hours, at least partly.

  • UK clients: 9am to 5pm UK time is 10am to 6pm in Lagos while the UK is on GMT (from 25 October 2026), and 9am to 5pm in Lagos during British Summer Time.
  • US East Coast clients: 9am to 5pm Eastern is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos on EST (from 1 November 2026) and 2pm to 10pm on EDT in summer. The HR-EX ad required daily overlap with these hours.

Month end is the busy period. Plan for longer days in the first week of each month.

Power, internet and security

Reconciliations half-saved during a power cut cause errors. Have an inverter or solar backup and two ways online (for example a MiFi plus a phone hotspot). You'll often have access to clients' bank feeds and payroll data, so use a password manager, turn on two-factor authentication, and never save client logins in your browser on a shared laptop.

Contracts and getting paid

Most Nigeria-based remote bookkeepers working for foreign clients are independent contractors, not employees. That affects benefits, notice and tax. Our guide to contractor vs employee arrangements in Nigeria explains the difference. For receiving dollars through apps such as Payoneer, Grey or Wise, see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Income earned remotely is still taxable in Nigeria: see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

Bookkeeping scams to watch for

Bookkeeping attracts a particular kind of fraud because the job title involves money. Walk away if a "bookkeeping job":

  • Asks you to receive money into your own bank account and forward it elsewhere. That is money laundering (a "money mule" scheme), not bookkeeping.
  • Sends you a cheque or transfer to "buy software" and asks you to refund the difference.
  • Charges you for training, a "starter kit" or registration before you can start.
  • Asks for your BVN, bank login or card details before any proper offer or contract.
  • Communicates only through Telegram or WhatsApp, with no company website or email domain you can check.

Real bookkeeping roles give you access to the client's accounting software and bank feeds, never your own account. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the wider warning signs.

Is bookkeeping a good long-term remote career?

It's a sound entry point, but go in with your eyes open. BLS projects employment of US bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks to fall 6% between 2025 and 2035, mainly because software automates routine tasks. It still expects about 144,100 openings a year from people leaving the field (BLS).

The work that's shrinking is plain data entry. The work that holds up is judgement: fixing messy books, reconciling tricky accounts, handling payroll, and explaining numbers to business owners. So treat bookkeeping as a first rung. Common next steps include accounts payable specialist, payroll and, with professional exams, accountant.

Frequently asked questions

Can I become a remote bookkeeper with no experience in Nigeria?

Yes, but you'll usually start with part-time, assistant or clean-up work rather than a full-time role. Most ads ask for some practical experience, which you can build with practice books, small local clients and finance duties in an admin job.

Do I need an accounting degree to work as a remote bookkeeper?

No. BLS lists the typical entry-level education for bookkeeping clerks as some college with no degree. Some senior ads still ask for a degree, so check each one.

Which software should a beginner learn first, QuickBooks or Xero?

Learn the one your target clients use. QuickBooks Online is common in the US and Xero is popular in the UK. Real ads often accept Xero, QuickBooks or Sage, so one learned properly is enough to start.

How much do beginner remote bookkeepers earn?

There's no reliable public figure for Nigeria-based remote bookkeepers. The US median for bookkeeping clerks was $24.36 an hour in May 2025, but that's for US-based workers. Beginners hired from Nigeria are usually paid well below that, and a Lagos junior ad in 2026 offered ₦80,000 to ₦170,000 a month.

Is the Intuit bookkeeping certificate useful if I live in Nigeria?

The course is useful for learning. Coursera says the Intuit Academy Bookkeeping exam it prepares you for is available only to people in the US, so a Nigeria-based learner may not be able to sit it. Check current eligibility and pricing on the course page before paying.

Are remote bookkeeping jobs in South Africa or Kenya open to Nigerians?

Usually not. Ads that say "South Africa (Remote)" or similar expect you to live there, often for payroll reasons. Look for ads that name Nigeria, Africa without exclusions, or worldwide.

Is a job that asks me to process payments through my account real bookkeeping?

No. A bookkeeper records a business's transactions in the business's own systems. Requests to receive and forward money through your personal account are a common money-laundering scam and can expose you to criminal liability.

Key takeaways

  • Remote bookkeeping is open to beginners, but mostly through assistant, part-time and clean-up work rather than "no experience" job ads.
  • Learn double entry, bank reconciliation, Excel and one cloud package (QuickBooks Online or Xero) before applying.
  • Practice books, small real projects and finance duties in admin jobs count as the experience employers ask for.
  • Check the location line on every ad: many remote bookkeeping roles in Africa are limited to one country.
  • US pay figures are benchmarks only; beginners in Nigeria are usually paid well below them.
  • Never accept a "bookkeeping" job that moves money through your personal account.
