How to become a remote accounts payable specialist from Nigeria

Most remote AP jobs open to Nigerians ask for two or three years of payables experience, one accounting system you know well (NetSuite, Xero, QuickBooks or Sage) and very good written English. A degree helps with larger employers but is not always required. If you already process invoices for a Nigerian company, you are closer than you think.

The work is the same everywhere: match the invoice to the order, check it, get it approved, pay it, record it. What changes for foreign employers is the software, the tax forms and the fraud risk, because remote finance teams are a favourite target for fake supplier emails.

What a remote accounts payable specialist does

AP specialists own the journey from supplier invoice to payment. A bill arrives by email or through a portal, you check it against the purchase order and proof of delivery, route it to the budget holder for approval, post it to the right expense account and schedule it in the next payment run.

Around that core there is a lot of checking. You reconcile supplier statements so you know what you really owe, chase approvers who sit on invoices, answer suppliers asking where their money is, and post accruals at month-end for goods received but not yet invoiced. In US companies you also collect W-9 forms and help prepare 1099s for contractors.

The part employers worry about most is control. Duplicate payments, invoices from suppliers who don't exist and emails asking to "update our bank details" cost real money. A good AP specialist is sceptical by habit.

A day in the role

  1. Clear the AP inbox: log new invoices, reject ones without a PO number or with wrong company details
  2. Run three-way matching (purchase order, goods received, invoice) and send exceptions back to the buyer
  3. Chase approvals from budget holders in Slack or the approval tool before the payment run cut-off
  4. Prepare the weekly payment run, check it for duplicates and unusual amounts, and send it for sign-off
  5. Call a supplier on a number you already hold to confirm any request to change bank details
  6. Reconcile the top suppliers' statements against the ledger and clear old disputed items
  7. Post month-end accruals and review the aged creditors report with the finance manager

Skills you need

Core skills

Three-way matching

It is the main control in payables. You need to spot when the invoice quantity or price differs from the order and know who must resolve it.

An ERP or accounting system

Remote ads name a system: NetSuite for many US tech firms, Xero, QuickBooks or Sage for UK small businesses. Pick one to know deeply and learn the basics of another.

Spend management tools

Ramp, Brex and Expensify now handle card spend and bills at many startups. One South Africa remote AP ad in 2026 listed Ramp experience as a requirement.

Supplier statement reconciliation

It is how you catch missing invoices and payments posted to the wrong supplier before the supplier puts the account on hold.

Payment fraud awareness

Business email compromise targets AP. You must know the warning signs and follow call-back procedures every time, even when the CEO is shouting.

Month-end accruals

Costs belong in the month they were incurred. Knowing how to accrue for uninvoiced deliveries keeps the P&L honest.

Spreadsheets

Lookups and pivot tables for duplicate checks, aged creditors and reconciling exports from one system to another.

Basic sales tax or VAT

You must spot an invoice with the wrong VAT or missing tax details before it is paid.

Soft skills

Polite firmness

Suppliers want money and managers want exceptions. You need to say no to both without making enemies.

Written clarity

Most of your work with approvers and suppliers happens by email and Slack, often across time zones. One clear message saves three follow-ups.

Attention to detail

A single swapped digit in a bank account or invoice number is the difference between a normal week and a lost payment.

Tools you'll use

  • Oracle NetSuite

Common ERP at US and global tech companies; named in several remote AP ads.

  • Xero

    UK small-business standard; free certification.

  • QuickBooks Online

US small-business standard; free ProAdvisor training.

  • Sage

Older UK businesses still run purchase ledgers on it.

  • Ramp

Card and bill-pay platform used by many US startups.

  • Brex or Expensify

Expense claims and corporate cards; same skills as Ramp.

  • Dext or Hubdoc

Captures invoices and pushes them into Xero or QuickBooks.

  • Excel or Google Sheets

Duplicate checks, payment run reviews, ageing analysis.

Where to learn

Career path

How remote accounts payable specialists usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.

  1. Entry

AP clerk or purchase ledger clerk

    0-2

Invoice entry, matching and supplier queries under a supervisor.

  2. Mid-level

    Accounts payable specialist

    2-4

Own payment runs, statement reconciliations and month-end accruals for one or more entities.

  3. Senior

Senior AP specialist or AP lead

    4-7

Multi-entity or multi-country payables, process fixes, training juniors.

  4. Lead

    AP or procure-to-pay manager

    7+

Run the payables team, own controls and the AP system.

Sideways moves

  • Accountant · 3+

With ICAN or ACCA, move into general ledger and reporting.

  • Payroll specialist · 2+

Same discipline of accurate, deadline-driven payments.

Career path for a remote accounts payable specialist: AP clerk or purchase ledger clerk (0-2), then Accounts payable specialist (2-4), then Senior AP specialist or AP lead (4-7), then AP or procure-to-pay manager (7+). Sideways moves: Accountant, Payroll specialist.

Getting hired from Nigeria

Look in two places. Offshore staffing firms place African AP staff with UK and US companies on monthly salaries; read the location line carefully, because many of these ads are for South Africa only. And global companies with home-based finance teams, such as Canonical, post AP and AR roles as "Home based, EMEA", which covers Nigeria. Those roles are competitive and ask for strong academic results.

Your CV should show volume and control, not duties. "Processed about 600 invoices a month across two entities in Sage, cut duplicate payments to zero with a weekly duplicate check" tells the reader something. "Responsible for accounts payable" does not.

If you have no foreign experience yet, get the free Xero and QuickBooks certifications and build a small sample: a payment run spreadsheet with a duplicate check and a supplier statement reconciliation, both with fake data. It shows you know the work.

Plan your hours. A UK employer means 9am to 5pm UK time, which is 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter and the same hours in summer. A US employer often wants Eastern Time overlap, finishing your day around 10pm or 11pm. Make sure your inverter or solar setup covers that, and keep a second internet connection on a different network.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Changing a supplier's bank details because of an email, even one that looks like it came from the CEO. Always call back on a number you already hold.
  • Calling yourself "AP specialist" when you have only entered invoices. Interviewers will ask about payment runs and accruals.
  • Ignoring the location line on job ads. Many offshore finance ads are for one country only, and applying anyway wastes your time.
  • Not knowing the employer's tax paperwork: US firms need W-9s and 1099s for contractors, UK firms need correct VAT on invoices.
  • Letting approvals pile up. Late payments damage supplier relationships, and remote managers notice who chases politely and who goes quiet.

Questions people ask

Can I get a remote accounts payable job in Nigeria without a degree?

Sometimes. Offshore staffing firms mostly ask for experience and software skills, and some ads do not mention a degree. Large global employers such as Canonical ask for strong academic results and an accounting or finance subject, so a degree or professional study helps there.

How much does a remote AP specialist earn from Africa?

Published 2026 ads ranged from about $16,600 a year for clerk roles to $18,000-$27,600 for experienced AP roles with US companies, mostly for South African applicants. See our accounts payable salary page for each source.

Is NetSuite worth learning for AP jobs?

Yes if you are aiming at US or global tech companies, which often use it and name it in ads. NetSuite training is not free, so the practical route is to learn Xero or QuickBooks first and pick up NetSuite on the job or through an employer.

What is three-way matching?

It is checking that the purchase order, the proof of delivery and the supplier invoice agree on what was bought, how many and at what price before you pay. Expect at least one interview question on it.

Are remote AP jobs a scam risk?

The jobs themselves are usually real, but fake recruiters exist. A real employer will never ask you to pay for training, equipment or a "work permit", and will not ask you to receive and forward money through your own account.
