How to become a remote bookkeeper from Nigeria
You can become a remote bookkeeper from Nigeria without a degree if you learn double-entry bookkeeping properly, get certified in Xero and QuickBooks Online (both free), and can show a client a clean set of reconciled books. Foreign small businesses hire for this because their books already live in the cloud, so it does not matter whether you sit in Leeds or Lekki.
The catch is that clients pay for accuracy and reliability, not effort. One unexplained difference on a bank reconciliation does more damage to your name than a slow week. This page is about getting good enough that nobody has to check your work twice.

What a remote bookkeeper does
A bookkeeper turns a business's raw transactions into records an accountant can trust. That means coding every bank and card transaction to the right account, matching invoices to payments, chasing missing receipts and reconciling each bank, card and payment account to the statement every month.
For small foreign clients you are often the only finance person they talk to. The owner of a Manchester cleaning company or a Texas Shopify store will send you a photo of a fuel receipt on WhatsApp and expect you to know which month it belongs in. Bigger clients split the work, so you might only handle supplier bills or only reconcile Stripe payouts.
Bookkeepers do not usually sign off accounts or file company tax returns. That is the accountant's job. Your job is to make the accountant's job short.
A day in the role
- Code the previous day's bank feed in Xero or QuickBooks Online, using bank rules for the repeat items and checking anything new by hand
- Upload receipts and bills through Dext or Hubdoc and match them to the right bank lines
- Reconcile Stripe, PayPal or Shopify payouts, splitting out fees, refunds and chargebacks that the processor netted off
- Send the client a short list of transactions you could not identify, with dates and amounts, instead of guessing
- Prepare month-end: accruals and prepayments if the client wants them, a trial balance check, and a P&L the owner can read
- For UK clients, prepare the VAT return figures for the accountant to review before submission
- Keep a written checklist for each client so another bookkeeper could pick up the file if you were ill
Skills you need
Core skills
- Double-entry bookkeeping
Software hides the debits and credits until something breaks. When a balance sheet account looks wrong, you need to know which entry caused it, not just which button to press.
- Bank and account reconciliation
This is the skill clients judge you on. A reconciled account with a clear explanation for every difference is the product you are selling.
- Xero and QuickBooks Online
Almost every remote bookkeeping ad names one or both. UK clients lean towards Xero, US clients towards QuickBooks Online, so learn both.
- Receipt capture tools
Dext and Hubdoc come up in UK offshore bookkeeping ads because they cut the time spent matching paperwork. Knowing them makes you faster from week one.
- Payment processor reconciliation
Stripe, PayPal and Shopify pay out net of fees and refunds, so the bank deposit never matches the sales figure. Online businesses need someone who can split these properly.
- Sales tax and VAT basics
You will not file returns yourself, but you must code transactions with the right VAT rate for UK clients or keep sales tax separate for US ones. Wrong codes create wrong returns.
- Spreadsheets
Lookups, pivot tables and simple reconciliations in Excel or Google Sheets fill the gaps the accounting software leaves, especially in catch-up work.
Soft skills
- Asking clear questions
Clients are busy owners. A list that says "£84.20 to AMZ Mktp on 3 June: stock or office supplies?" gets answered. "Please explain your transactions" does not.
- Discretion
You will see salaries, personal spending and debts. Clients keep bookkeepers who never repeat what they saw.
- Routine
Bookkeeping rewards doing the same checks every week without skipping steps when you are tired or NEPA has taken light.
Tools you'll use
Xero
Cloud accounting used by many UK and Australian small businesses; certification is free.
QuickBooks Online
Common with US small businesses; join the ProAdvisor programme free to get a practice account.
Sage
Still used by older UK businesses; listed alongside Xero and QuickBooks in offshore UK ads.
Dext
Receipt and bill capture that pushes data into Xero or QuickBooks.
Hubdoc
Xero's own document capture tool, often named in UK ads.
Stripe dashboard
You need to read payout reports to reconcile online sales.
Excel or Google Sheets
For catch-up work, client schedules and checking imports.
A password manager
Clients share bank and software logins; keep them out of WhatsApp chats.
Where to learn
- Xero certification (Associate, then Professional) (opens in a new tab)
Xero Free
Three levels taken in order. Put the badge on your CV and LinkedIn; UK clients look for it.
- QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification (opens in a new tab)
Intuit QuickBooks Free to join the ProAdvisor programme
Gives you access to the ProAdvisor Academy training and certification exams. There is a short recertification every year.
- Intuit Academy Bookkeeping Professional Certificate (opens in a new tab)
Intuit on Coursera About $39 a month in the US and Canada; Coursera shows local pricing and financial aid
Four courses that teach bookkeeping from the start. The final Intuit Academy exam is only open to people in the US, so treat this as training, not a credential.
- Introduction to Financial Accounting (opens in a new tab)
University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) on Coursera Free to enrol; the certificate is paid
A solid grounding in accruals and the three financial statements if you did not study accounting.
- ATSWA (Accounting Technicians Scheme West Africa) (opens in a new tab)
ICAN Paid in naira; registration and exam fees are on the ICAN site
A local accounting technician qualification. Foreign clients will not know it by name, but it proves you studied bookkeeping formally and leads towards ICAN.

Getting hired from Nigeria
There are three realistic routes. The first is offshore staffing firms that place African bookkeepers with UK or US businesses on a fixed monthly salary. Many advertise only to South Africans, so read the location line before you apply, but some, like The VA Group, post bookkeeping roles open to all countries on US time zones. The second is freelance platforms such as Upwork, where you build a record with small clean-up projects. The third is direct outreach to UK accountancy practices that want help with the routine work.
Proof beats certificates. Build a sample file: set up a demo company in Xero, import three months of fake but realistic transactions, reconcile them, and record a five-minute Loom video walking through your month-end checklist. Send that with your CV.
Expect a technical check. The VA Group's bookkeeping ad, for example, asks for a wired connection of at least 25 Mbps, a 10 Mbps backup, and a backup computer. Have your inverter or solar setup and a second network ready before you apply, and say so on your CV.
UK clients are the easiest fit for Lagos hours: 9am to 5pm UK time is 10am to 6pm in Lagos from late October to late March and the same hours for the rest of the year. US clients usually want overlap in Eastern Time, which is 5 or 6 hours behind Lagos.
For payment, most offshore firms and platforms pay into Payoneer, a domiciliary account or through Deel or Remote.com. Ask how and when you are paid before you sign anything.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Guessing what a transaction is instead of asking. Wrong coding spreads into VAT returns and tax returns, and the client's accountant will trace it back to you.
- Learning only one software package. Losing a client because they use QuickBooks and you only know Xero is avoidable.
- Taking on too many clients at once to make up for low rates. Month-end hits them all in the same week.
- Paying for "guaranteed placement" bookkeeping courses. The certifications that clients recognise from Xero and Intuit are free.
- Using a shared or cybercafé computer for client logins. One leaked bank login ends the relationship.
- Ignoring time zones on payday: a US client's "Friday" payment can land on your Monday.
Questions people ask
Can I become a bookkeeper in Nigeria without a degree?
Yes. Remote bookkeeping clients care about whether you can reconcile accounts and run month-end in their software, not your degree. Xero and QuickBooks certifications are free, and a sample set of reconciled books does more for you than a certificate.
How much does a remote bookkeeper earn from Nigeria?
As of October 2026, published offshore ads for full-time bookkeepers working UK hours from South Africa pay R29,000 to R32,000 a month, roughly $21,000 to $23,000 a year. We found no published ranges aimed at Nigerian applicants, and freelance rates vary widely. See our bookkeeper salary page for the detail.
Is Xero or QuickBooks better to learn first?
Learn the one your target clients use. UK and Australian small businesses lean towards Xero, while US businesses lean towards QuickBooks Online. Both are free to learn, so get certified in both within your first few months.
Do I need ICAN to work as a bookkeeper for foreign clients?
No. ICAN matters if you want to become a chartered accountant in Nigeria, and ATSWA is a good local technician qualification, but foreign bookkeeping clients rarely ask for either. They ask for software skills, accuracy and references.
Can I do remote bookkeeping part-time while working a 9-5?
Yes, and many people start that way. Most small clients need a few hours a week plus a busier month-end. Be honest about your availability, because a client who cannot reach you in their working hours will not stay.
What equipment do I need for remote bookkeeping?
A reliable laptop, a second screen if you can afford it, power backup and two internet connections. Some employers spell this out: one US-hours bookkeeping ad in 2026 asked for 25 Mbps wired internet, a 10 Mbps backup and a backup computer.

- Accountant
An accountant prepares and checks a business's financial records, closes the books each month and produces accounts that management, auditors and tax authorities rely on. Qualified Nigerian accountants can work remotely for foreign employers, mostly in month-end, reporting and reconciliation roles; signing audits or tax returns abroad usually needs a local licence you cannot get from Nigeria.
- Accounts Payable Specialist
An accounts payable (AP) specialist makes sure a company's suppliers are paid the right amount, once, on time, and that every bill is recorded properly. It is a well-defined back-office role that foreign companies do hire for remotely, including some, like Canonical, that hire home-based AP staff anywhere in EMEA, which includes Nigeria.
- Accounts Receivable Specialist
An accounts receivable (AR) specialist sends a company's invoices, matches incoming payments to them and chases customers who pay late. Remote AR and credit control jobs for UK and US companies are open to Africans, though many offshore ads with published pay are limited to South Africa, so Nigerians should read the location line before applying.
- Payroll Specialist
A payroll specialist makes sure everyone in an organisation is paid correctly and on time, with the right tax, pension and other deductions, and keeps the records to prove it. You can do it remotely from Nigeria, but payroll is tied to each country's tax rules, so the realistic remote work is multi-country payroll at global employers and EOR firms, or Nigerian payroll for companies that hire here.
