How to become a remote payroll specialist from Nigeria

Payroll is a precise, trusted job that can be done from anywhere, but not for anywhere. Each country has its own income tax, social security, pension and reporting rules. A US company won't usually hand its US payroll to someone who hasn't trained in US federal and state rules, and a UK firm expects knowledge of PAYE and National Insurance.

That leaves Nigerians two strong remote routes. The first is Nigerian payroll for foreign companies and employers of record hiring staff here, where knowing PAYE, pension and other statutory deductions in practice is the selling point. The second is global payroll support: running monthly cycles across many countries with local providers, which firms like RemotePeople and Growe were hiring for in 2026.

What a remote payroll specialist does

A payroll specialist runs the cycle that turns hours, salaries, bonuses and changes into correct payslips and payments. Each month that means collecting inputs (new starters, leavers, pay rises, overtime, unpaid leave), calculating gross pay, applying tax and other deductions, checking the results, getting approval and making sure money and filings go out on time.

In a global or EOR setting, you often don't calculate every country's tax yourself. You collect and validate inputs, send them to local payroll providers, check what comes back, answer employee questions about payslips and reconcile everything with finance.

Growe's 2026 payroll specialist ad, open worldwide, described the core well: run the monthly cycle, reconcile bonuses and allowances, be the main contact for pay and benefits questions, and support audits.

A day in the role

  1. Collect payroll inputs from HR and managers: starters, leavers, salary changes, bonuses, overtime and leave
  2. Validate inputs against contracts and the HRIS, and query anything that looks wrong before the cut-off
  3. Run or review payroll calculations and compare totals with last month to explain every big movement
  4. Send country inputs to local providers or the EOR, and check the payslips they return
  5. Answer employee questions about payslips, tax deductions and pension contributions
  6. Reconcile payroll with the bank and the general ledger, working with finance
  7. Keep records and reports ready for audits and statutory filings

Skills you need

Core skills

Payroll calculation

Gross to net, with tax, pension, statutory and voluntary deductions. Even if software calculates it, you must be able to check it by hand.

Country rules

Knowing Nigerian PAYE, pension and statutory deductions in depth, or another country's rules, is what makes you hireable. Always work from the current tax tables, because rules change.

Excel or Google Sheets

Input files, variance checks and reconciliations. Lookups, pivots and careful formulas are daily tools.

Reconciliation

Matching payroll totals to bank payments and the ledger. Most payroll errors are found here.

Payroll and HR systems

Sage, Xero Payroll, QuickBooks Payroll, ADP, Gusto, Workday or EOR platforms. You'll learn your employer's, but show you've used at least one properly.

Deadline management

Payroll cut-offs don't move. Planning the month backwards from pay day is a core habit.

Explaining pay clearly

Employees ask why their net pay changed. Clear, calm answers build trust in payroll.

Soft skills

Confidentiality

You see everyone's salary, bank details and deductions. Discretion is absolute.

Precision under time pressure

Payroll weeks are intense, but a rushed error affects someone's rent or school fees.

Healthy scepticism

Good payroll people question unusual inputs, like a bonus that's ten times larger than normal, instead of just processing them.

Tools you'll use

  • Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets

Input templates, variance checks and reconciliations. Growe's 2026 ad listed strong Excel or Sheets as a requirement.

  • Sage or Xero Payroll

Common in the UK and with smaller businesses internationally.

  • ADP or Gusto

    Widely used for US payroll.

  • Deel or Remote.com

EOR and contractor platforms that run payroll in many countries.

  • Workday or BambooHR

HR systems that feed payroll inputs.

  • Zendesk or Jira Service Management

Ticketing tools used by global payroll support teams; RemotePeople's 2026 ad named Zendesk.

  • Online banking and bulk payment tools

For releasing salary payments and checking they cleared.

Where to learn

How remote payroll specialists usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.

  3. Senior

  4. Lead

    Payroll manager

Sideways moves

  • Compensation and benefits, accounting or people operations · 3+

Payroll knowledge transfers well into these roles.

Career path for a remote payroll specialist: Payroll assistant or administrator (0-2), then Payroll specialist (2-5), then Senior or global payroll specialist (5+), then Payroll manager (7+). Sideways moves: Compensation and benefits, accounting or people operations.

Getting hired from Nigeria

Make your country knowledge the headline. If you've run Nigerian payroll (PAYE through a state internal revenue service, pension contributions to PFAs, other statutory deductions, monthly remittances), put that first on your CV with numbers: 'monthly payroll for 260 staff across Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt'. Foreign companies hiring in Nigeria, and the EOR firms they use, need exactly that.

For global roles, show multi-country thinking. In October 2026, RemotePeople, an employer-of-record company, was hiring an employee support specialist for HR, payroll and global employment across EMEA, with Nigeria among eligible countries; it asked for three years in employee support, payroll support, EOR or HR shared services. Growe advertised a payroll specialist role open worldwide, asking for two years of monthly payroll with multiple compensation types and strong Excel. Neither ad published pay.

If you want UK or US payroll work, train in those rules. CIPP's online qualifications cover UK payroll; PayrollOrg's FPC covers US federal payroll. Without them, applications for UK- or US-only payroll roles rarely get far.

Payroll deadlines are fixed, so your setup has to be too: reliable power, two internet routes and a secure, private workspace. Ask how you'll be employed and paid, and how your own PAYE and pension will be handled in Nigeria.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Applying for US- or UK-only payroll roles with no training in those countries' rules.
  • Working from memory on tax rules. Always check current tax tables and official guidance; rules change.
  • Skipping reconciliations when you're busy. That's when errors slip through.
  • Sending payroll files by WhatsApp or personal email. Use secure company systems only.
  • Processing unusual inputs without questioning them. A 'one-off bonus' with an extra zero is a classic error.
  • Forgetting your own tax position as a remote worker. Check how your income is taxed in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Can I work in payroll remotely from Nigeria?

Yes, mainly in global payroll support at EOR and multinational firms, or running Nigerian payroll for foreign employers. Single-country payroll for the US or UK usually needs specific training in those countries' rules.

How much does a remote payroll specialist earn in Nigeria?

We couldn't find credible published pay for remote payroll roles open to Nigerians, so we don't give a range. For context, the US median for payroll and timekeeping clerks was $58,260 in May 2025, and UK payroll administrators earn about £22,000 to £35,000. Remote roles hired from Nigeria usually pay well below those.

Do I need ICAN or ACCA to work in payroll?

No. Accounting qualifications help, especially for payroll-and-finance roles, but payroll employers mainly want proven experience running cycles accurately. Payroll-specific credentials like CIPP or FPC matter more for UK or US roles.

Which certificate is best for payroll jobs?

It depends on the country you'll work on: CIPP for UK payroll, PayrollOrg's FPC or CPP for US payroll. For Nigerian payroll, experience with PAYE, pensions and statutory remittances counts more than any certificate.

Is payroll a good remote career?

It's stable and respected, because every company has to pay people correctly. Remote options are narrower than in support or tech roles, but specialists who understand several countries are in demand at EOR firms.
