How to become a remote accountant from Nigeria
To work as a remote accountant for a foreign company from Nigeria, you realistically need a professional qualification the employer recognises by name (Canonical's 2026 accountant ads, for example, list ACA, ACCA, ACMA, CIMA and CPA), two or more years of month-end and reporting experience, and skill with an ERP such as NetSuite. ICAN is essential for practising in Nigeria, but foreign employers tend to list ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CPA by name, so many Nigerian accountants hold ICAN and ACCA together.
Be clear about what remote work abroad can and cannot include. You can close the books, prepare management accounts, reconcile intercompany balances and support audits. Signing an audit report or acting as a licensed tax adviser in the US or UK needs that country's licence, which is not something a Nigeria-based accountant can usually obtain.

What a remote accountant does
Most remote accountant roles are about the monthly close. You post journals for accruals, prepayments, depreciation and payroll, reconcile balance sheet accounts, revalue foreign currency balances and make sure intercompany accounts agree between group companies. Then you produce the numbers: a trial balance, management accounts, and notes explaining why costs or revenue moved.
In a global company you might own one area, such as revenue accounting under IFRS 15 or US ASC 606, or the books for a few subsidiaries. In a small firm you might be the only accountant, covering everything from VAT to the year-end pack for the auditors.
The job also involves answering questions. Auditors want schedules, the finance manager wants a variance explained before a board meeting, and the bookkeeper wants to know how to code something odd.
A day in the role
- Post month-end journals: accruals for uninvoiced costs, prepayments released, depreciation, payroll and FX revaluation
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and clear old reconciling items before the reviewer asks about them
- Agree intercompany balances with the accountant for the sister company in another country
- Prepare management accounts and a short commentary on the three biggest variances against budget
- Pull together audit schedules and answer auditor queries in the shared request list
- Review revenue contracts for recognition timing under IFRS 15 or ASC 606 where the role covers revenue
- Improve one process each month, such as a reconciliation template or a NetSuite saved search
Skills you need
Core skills
- Month-end close
It is the core of almost every remote accountant job. Employers want someone who can close their area on time without being chased.
- IFRS or US GAAP
EMEA roles mostly report under IFRS; US companies use US GAAP. Know the differences that matter for your target employer, such as lease accounting and revenue recognition.
- Balance sheet reconciliations
Clean reconciliations are what reviewers and auditors look at first. Unexplained balances suggest problems even if the P&L looks fine.
- Revenue recognition
Remote roles at software and tech companies often ask for IFRS 15 or ASC 606 experience, because subscription revenue is easy to get wrong.
- Multi-entity and intercompany accounting
Global employers have many subsidiaries. Being able to reconcile and eliminate intercompany balances is a common requirement.
- ERP systems
NetSuite appears in many tech-company ads; SAP and Oracle at larger groups. Xero and QuickBooks matter for smaller clients.
- Advanced Excel
Pivot tables, lookups and building reconciliations or schedules that another accountant can follow.
- Tax awareness
You may not file returns abroad, but you should know how VAT, sales tax and corporate tax provisions hit the accounts.
Soft skills
- Clear written explanations
A remote finance manager reads your variance commentary without you in the room. It must stand on its own.
- Ownership of deadlines
Close calendars are tight. Saying early that a number will be late is valued; missing quietly is not.
- Scepticism
Good accountants ask why a number looks the way it does before the auditors do.
Tools you'll use
Oracle NetSuite
Named in remote accountant ads at global tech firms like Canonical and Oyster.
SAP or Oracle Fusion
Common at large groups and multinationals in Nigeria too, so local experience transfers.
Xero
UK and Australian small-business standard, free certification.
QuickBooks Online
US small-business standard, free ProAdvisor training.
Excel
Still where most reconciliations and schedules are built.
BlackLine or FloQast
Close-management tools some larger companies use for reconciliations and checklists.
Power BI
Useful if the role includes management reporting dashboards.

Xero Free
Worth having for small UK and Australian clients.
- QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification (opens in a new tab)
Intuit QuickBooks Free to join the ProAdvisor programme

Getting hired from Nigeria
Target three kinds of employer. Global companies with home-based finance teams post roles as "Home based, EMEA" or "Anywhere"; Canonical advertised an Accountant, a Revenue Accountant and a Technical & Reporting Accountant this way in 2026, all asking for a professional qualification such as ACCA, ACA, ACMA or CPA. Employer-of-record and HR-tech companies such as Oyster hire accountants worldwide, though their ads say you must be authorised to work where you live. And outsourced accounting firms serving UK or US clients hire offshore accountants for month-end and year-end work.
Your CV needs to speak their language. Name the standard (IFRS or US GAAP), the system, the number of entities and the close timeline: "Closed books for four entities on NetSuite in five working days". Big 4 or mid-tier audit experience in Lagos is understood abroad; say which firm.
Expect a technical interview and often a test: journals for an accrual and a prepayment, a reconciliation with errors, or an IFRS 15 question. Have your ACCA or ICAN membership number ready; serious employers verify it.
Some global employers expect travel a few times a year for team events. Canonical's ads, for example, mention travel up to four times a year. With a Nigerian passport that means visa applications, so ask early how they support them.
A smaller, newer route is AI training contract work, where companies like micro1 hire experienced accountants worldwide to review financial statements and audit procedures for AI projects. It is real work but irregular; treat it as extra income, not a career.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Relying on ICAN alone for foreign applications. Many employers will not know it; add ACCA or explain it as "chartered, equivalent to ACA" if the employer says "or equivalent".
- Claiming IFRS 15 or ASC 606 experience you do not have. Technical interviews go deep and it shows.
- Ignoring the travel and work-authorisation lines in ads. They are real requirements, not decoration.
- Pricing yourself at Nigerian local rates on contracts. Foreign employers budget in dollars or pounds; ask their range first.
- Taking on a US or UK client's tax filings that legally need a licensed preparer or adviser in that country.
Questions people ask
Can I work as a remote accountant for a UK or US company from Nigeria?
Yes, in roles like general ledger, month-end, reporting and audit support. Signing audit opinions or acting as a licensed tax adviser abroad needs that country's licence, which you generally cannot hold from Nigeria.
Is ICAN enough, or do I need ACCA?
ICAN is enough to practise in Nigeria. For foreign remote roles, ACCA helps because employers name it in ads; Canonical's 2026 accountant ads, for example, listed ACCA, ACA, ACMA and CPA. Many Nigerian accountants hold both.
Can I become a remote accountant without a degree?
It is hard. Most remote accountant ads ask for a degree and a professional qualification. Without a degree, start in bookkeeping or accounts payable, write ATSWA and ACCA, and move up.
Do I need a US CPA to work for American companies?
Not for most remote accounting roles, which ask for "CPA or equivalent". You need a US licence to sign audit reports or represent clients, not to post journals and close the books.
How much does a remote accountant earn in Nigeria?
We could not find reliable published pay for Nigeria-based accountants in remote foreign roles, so we have not put a range on this page. For reference, PayScale's self-reported average for local accountant jobs in Nigeria was ₦1,333,315 a year (169 profiles, June 2026), the US median was $83,680 in May 2025, and offshore bookkeeping roles for UK firms paid about $16,600 to $23,200 a year in October 2026.
Which is better for remote work, IFRS or US GAAP?
Learn the one your target employers use. Most EMEA-based roles report under IFRS, which Nigerian accountants already know. US companies use US GAAP, so learn the main differences, such as lease accounting and inventory rules, before applying.

- Bookkeeper
A bookkeeper records a business's money in and out, reconciles bank accounts and keeps the ledgers ready for the accountant. It is one of the most realistic finance roles to do remotely from Nigeria, because UK, US and Australian small businesses already run their books in cloud software like Xero and QuickBooks Online.
- Tax Accountant
A tax accountant prepares tax computations and returns, keeps a business compliant with VAT, payroll and corporate tax rules, and advises on the tax effect of decisions. You can do tax work remotely from Nigeria for US or African clients, but each country's rules decide what you may sign: US returns need an IRS PTIN, and some UK tax bodies do not accept students who live in Nigeria.
- Internal Auditor
An internal auditor tests whether a company's controls, processes and risk management actually work, and reports weaknesses to management and the audit committee. Remote internal audit roles open to Nigerians exist, mainly at global companies and in control-testing work such as US SOX testing, but most need a professional qualification and some travel.
- Financial Analyst
A financial analyst builds budgets, forecasts and models that help a company decide where to spend money, and explains why results differ from the plan. Remote financial analyst work from Nigeria is realistic in FP&A (financial planning and analysis) roles at tech companies and startups; investment and equity research roles are far harder to get remotely.
