How to become a remote internal auditor from Nigeria

Most remote internal auditors working from Nigeria came from external audit at a Big 4 or mid-tier firm, hold ICAN or ACCA, and then added the IIA's Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). That combination is what global employers ask for. Canonical's 2026 internal auditor ad, for example, wanted a fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with prior internal audit experience.

Internal audit is less purely remote than accounting. Some fieldwork means visiting sites, and global teams often meet in person a few times a year. Data-driven testing, SOX control testing for US-listed companies and IT audit are the parts that work best from a home office in Lagos.

What a remote internal auditor does

Internal auditors work through a risk-based audit plan agreed with the audit committee. For each audit, such as procurement, payroll or customer onboarding, you map the process, identify the risks, find the controls meant to manage them and test whether those controls work.

Testing means evidence. You pick a sample of 25 supplier payments and check each was approved by the right person, or you run every payment through a duplicate check. When something fails, you write a finding: what you found, what should have happened, why it happened, what it could cost, and what management should do.

In US-listed companies, a big part of the job is Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) testing of financial reporting controls every year. That work is structured and well documented, which is why a lot of it is done remotely or by offshore teams.

A day in the role

  1. Walk a process owner through their process on a video call and record each control in a narrative or flowchart
  2. Request populations and samples from the finance or IT team and track them in the request list
  3. Test a sample of controls and document each test so a reviewer can re-perform it
  4. Run data analytics over full populations, such as duplicate vendor bank accounts or payments just under approval limits
  5. Draft findings with condition, criteria, cause, effect and recommendation, and agree them with management
  6. Follow up previous audit actions and close the ones management has fixed, with evidence
  7. Prepare part of the quarterly report to the audit committee

Skills you need

Core skills

Risk and control assessment

Internal audit starts from risk. You need to see what could go wrong in a process and which controls should stop it.

Control testing and sampling

Most audit hours go here. Knowing how to choose samples and document tests that hold up to review is essential.

Writing findings

A finding that management cannot argue with, and that tells them exactly what to fix, is the product of internal audit.

SOX and financial reporting controls

US-listed companies test these every year. It is one of the most common forms of remote internal audit work.

IT general controls

Access, change management and backups underpin every system. Even non-IT auditors are expected to understand them.

Data analytics

Testing whole populations with Excel, SQL or tools like IDEA or ACL is faster and more convincing than samples.

Accounting knowledge

Most audits touch the financial statements; employers ask for qualified accountants for this reason.

Knowledge of the IIA standards

The IIA's Global Internal Audit Standards set how audits are planned, performed and reported.

Soft skills

Professional scepticism with tact

You question people's work all day. You need them to keep cooperating afterwards.

Independence

Management will push to soften findings. You report what the evidence shows.

Clear speaking on video

Remote walkthroughs and closing meetings happen on Teams or Zoom, often in the auditee's second language or yours.

Tools you'll use

  • Excel

Sampling, testing and analytics on exported data.

  • SQL

For pulling full populations directly from systems.

  • IDEA or ACL (Diligent)

Audit analytics tools used by larger audit teams.

  • AuditBoard, TeamMate+ or Workiva

Audit management platforms where workpapers and findings live.

  • Power BI

Dashboards for audit committee reporting and continuous monitoring.

  • ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle or NetSuite

You test controls inside them, so you need to know where approvals and access sit.

Where to learn

Career path

How remote internal auditors usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.

  1. Entry

    Audit associate (external or internal)

    0-2

Usually at a Big 4 or mid-tier firm or a bank's internal audit team in Lagos.

  2. Mid-level

Internal auditor or SOX tester (remote)

    2-5

Run audit areas, test controls, write findings.

  3. Senior

    Senior internal auditor

    5-8

Lead audits end to end and supervise juniors.

  4. Lead

Internal audit manager or head of internal audit

    8+

Own the audit plan and the audit committee relationship.

Sideways moves

  • Compliance analyst · 3+

Moves into regulatory compliance at banks and fintechs.

  • Fraud analyst · 3+

Data-driven auditors often move into fraud and financial crime.

Career path for a remote internal auditor: Audit associate (external or internal) (0-2), then Internal auditor or SOX tester (remote) (2-5), then Senior internal auditor (5-8), then Internal audit manager or head of internal audit (8+). Sideways moves: Compliance analyst, Fraud analyst.

Getting hired from Nigeria

Three routes work. Global companies with home-based teams sometimes hire internal auditors across EMEA; Canonical's 2026 ad was open to home-based staff in the Americas and EMEA and asked for a qualified accountant with internal audit experience, plus travel two to four times a year for company events. Risk advisory and outsourcing firms run SOX testing for US companies with offshore teams. Nigerian banks and multinationals that run regional internal audit teams for their other African subsidiaries are also worth approaching about hybrid or remote arrangements.

On your CV, list the audit areas, the standard (SOX, IIA) and the tools: "Tested 60 SOX key controls across procure-to-pay and financial close for a US-listed client" is the level of detail that gets interviews.

Plan for the CIA early. You can start the exams while gaining the experience, and the IIA's Challenge Exam route lets qualified chartered accountants sit one exam instead of three, if they meet its conditions.

Travel matters more in audit than in most remote finance roles. Have a valid passport, keep your visa history clean and ask in the first interview how often travel is expected and whether they help with visa letters.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Presenting external audit experience without translating it. Internal audit employers want controls and risk, not just substantive testing.
  • Writing findings that describe a problem without a cause or a practical fix.
  • Letting management rewrite a finding into nothing. Agree the facts; keep the conclusion.
  • Ignoring IT controls. Almost every modern audit touches system access and change management.
  • Underestimating the travel line in ads. A role that expects quarterly trips needs a passport and visa plan.

Questions people ask

Can internal audit really be done remotely from Nigeria?

Much of it can: walkthroughs on video, testing from system exports, data analytics and SOX control testing. Some audits still need site visits, and global teams often expect a few trips a year.

Do I need the CIA to get a remote internal audit job?

Not always at the start, but it is the credential internal audit employers recognise worldwide. Many ask for a professional accounting qualification first, with the CIA as a plus or a requirement for senior roles.

How much does the CIA cost from Nigeria?

The IIA lists US prices of $240 to apply and $415 to $445 per exam part for non-members, less for members. Pricing can differ where exams run through a national institute, so check with IIA Nigeria before you pay.

How much does a remote internal auditor earn from Nigeria?

We have not found reliable published pay for Nigeria-based remote internal auditors, so this role has no salary range. For reference, the US median for accountants and auditors was $83,680 in May 2025, UK auditors earn £28,000 to £70,000 according to the National Careers Service, and PayScale's self-reported average for internal auditors in Nigeria was ₦1,440,000 a year in July 2026 (40 profiles).

Can I move from external audit to internal audit?

Yes, and it is the most common route. Emphasise controls work, process walkthroughs and any IT audit exposure from your external audit years.
