How to become a remote finance manager from Nigeria

Remote finance manager roles go to people who have already run a close, managed an audit and handled cash for a real business. Expect to need five or more years after qualification, ICAN plus ACCA or CIMA (or an equivalent foreign employers recognise), and experience with an ERP. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists five years or more in a related role as typical for financial managers, and foreign employers hiring remotely tend to ask for more, not less.

The realistic openings are startups with a US or UK holding company and operations in Nigeria or across Africa, global firms with home-based finance leaders in EMEA, and fractional finance work, where you run finance for several small companies part-time.

What a remote finance manager does

In a startup, the finance manager is often the whole finance team plus an outsourced bookkeeper. You close the books, run payroll with a provider, pay suppliers, forecast cash every week, deal with the auditors and tax advisers in each country, and prepare the investor update. When the company raises money, you build the data room.

In a larger group, the title usually means a financial controller role: owning the close and reporting for a region or a set of entities, managing accountants, keeping controls tight and handling the external audit.

Across both, the job is judgement. Which costs can wait, which bank to keep dollars in, when to tell the CEO that the hiring plan breaks the budget.

A day in the role

  1. Review the week's cash position across banks and currencies and update the 13-week cash flow forecast
  2. Approve the supplier payment run after checking it against the forecast
  3. Review the team's month-end reconciliations and journals before the books close
  4. Meet the CEO to walk through last month's results and the forecast for the year
  5. Answer auditor questions and agree the timetable for year-end
  6. Check that VAT, withholding tax and payroll taxes were filed and paid on time in each country
  7. Coach an accountant on the team through a reconciliation they could not clear

Skills you need

Core skills

Running the month-end close

You own the timetable and the quality of the numbers, not just your own tasks.

Cash flow forecasting

Startups fail when they run out of cash. A reliable 13-week forecast is often the first thing investors and CEOs want.

Financial reporting under IFRS or US GAAP

Groups with a US holding company and an African subsidiary often need both, plus consolidation.

Managing the external audit

Clean, on-time audits are how boards judge finance leaders.

Multi-country tax compliance oversight

You may not file returns yourself, but missed filings in any country land on your desk.

Budgeting and forecasting

Leadership expects you to set the plan and hold departments to it.

Internal controls

Small remote teams need sensible segregation of duties and approval rules, or fraud and errors slip through.

Foreign currency and treasury

Companies with naira and dollar exposure need someone who manages where cash sits and the FX risk.

ERP and finance systems

You will choose, implement or improve the systems your team uses.

Soft skills

Leading a remote team

You manage accountants and outsourced providers you rarely see. Clear expectations and written processes replace walking over to someone's desk.

Saying no to the CEO

Founders want to spend. Your job is to show what that does to cash and runway.

Explaining finance to non-finance people

Board members, engineers and investors need the numbers in plain language.

Tools you'll use

  • Oracle NetSuite

Common at scaling startups and in global groups, and named in Canonical's finance ads.

  • Xero or QuickBooks Online

    Early-stage startups and small subsidiaries.

  • SAP or Oracle

    Large groups and multinationals.

  • Excel or Google Sheets

Cash forecasts, board models, everything that does not fit the ERP.

  • Expense and card platforms such as Ramp, Brex or Expensify

    Control spend in distributed teams.

  • Payroll and employer-of-record platforms such as Deel or Remote.com

Many remote companies run international payroll through these.

  • Power BI or Looker

    Management dashboards.

Where to learn

Career path

How remote finance managers usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.

    Accountant

    0-4

Qualify with ICAN or ACCA; audit firm experience helps.

  2. Mid-level

    Senior accountant or FP&A analyst

    4-6

Own large parts of the close or the forecast.

  3. Senior

    Finance manager or financial controller

    6-10

Run the close, audit, cash and a small team.

  4. Lead

    Head of finance or CFO

Strategy, fundraising, board and investor relationships.

Sideways moves

  • Fractional finance lead · 8+

Run finance part-time for several startups.

  • Operations manager · 6+

Some finance managers in startups take on wider operations.

Career path for a remote finance manager: Accountant (0-4), then Senior accountant or FP&A analyst (4-6), then Finance manager or financial controller (6-10), then Head of finance or CFO (10+). Sideways moves: Fractional finance lead, Operations manager.

Getting hired from Nigeria

Senior remote finance roles are rarely filled from cold applications alone. Many come through investors, founders and other finance leaders who know your work. Keep your LinkedIn current with what you have run: entities, audit firms, systems, team size, fundraising.

Look at startups with operations in Nigeria and a holding company abroad. They need someone who understands both a Delaware or UK parent and a Nigerian subsidiary: consolidation, intercompany charges, FX and local tax. Global groups also hire finance leaders across EMEA; Canonical's 2026 Group Financial Controller ad, for example, was open to home-based staff in EMEA and asked for ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA or equivalent, extensive IFRS experience and ERP experience.

Fractional work is a realistic start for experienced people. A small UK or US company may not need a full-time finance manager but will pay for two days a month to close the books properly, forecast cash and prepare for audit.

Be ready to show, not tell. Bring an anonymised board pack or cash forecast template you built. In interviews, expect case questions about cash crunches, audits gone wrong and building a finance function from nothing.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Applying for remote finance manager roles straight from an accountant role. Build team and audit ownership first.
  • Running a startup's finance on WhatsApp approvals. Set up proper approval flows early.
  • Keeping all of a company's cash in one bank or one currency because it is convenient.
  • Assuming Nigerian and foreign reporting requirements are the same. Groups often need both local statutory accounts and parent reporting.
  • Taking on too many fractional clients. Month-end hits them all at once.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian get a remote finance manager job abroad?

Yes, but it is a senior hire. The usual profile is a qualified accountant with five or more years of experience, audit and team leadership, and ERP experience. Startups with Nigerian operations and global groups hiring across EMEA are the most realistic employers.

What qualifications do I need to be a remote finance manager?

A professional accounting qualification foreign employers recognise, such as ACCA, CIMA, ACA or CPA, and ICAN if you will run a Nigerian entity. An MBA or CFA can help but rarely replaces the accounting qualification.

How much does a remote finance manager earn from Nigeria?

We have not found enough published pay for Nigeria-based remote finance managers to give a reliable range. For context, the US median for financial managers was $166,570 in May 2025, and PayScale's self-reported average for finance managers in Nigeria was ₦1,900,000 a year in July 2026 (69 profiles).

What is a fractional finance manager?

Someone who runs finance part-time for several small companies, for example two days a month each. It suits experienced accountants who want foreign clients without one full-time employer.

Is a financial controller the same as a finance manager?

Often close. A controller usually focuses on accounting, reporting and controls, while a finance manager title can also include cash, budgeting and some strategy. Read the job description rather than the title.
