How to become a remote tax accountant from Nigeria

Remote tax work from Nigeria splits into three markets, and the rules are different in each. Nigerian and African tax work for fintechs and multinationals is the easiest to enter if you have ICAN or CITN and a few years of corporate tax. US tax preparation is open to foreigners in a limited way: you need an IRS PTIN to be paid to prepare federal returns, and foreign preparers without a Social Security number can get one. UK tax is the hardest, because some UK qualifications are closed to people living in Nigeria.

Whatever market you pick, you will be judged on accuracy and deadlines. Tax has hard filing dates and penalties, and a remote employer will only trust you once your returns stop coming back from review with corrections.

What a remote tax accountant does

In-house, a tax accountant handles a company's compliance: monthly VAT and withholding tax, payroll tax checks, the annual corporate tax computation and the tax lines in the accounts. In a group with entities in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa, that means keeping a calendar of filings for every country and working with local advisers where you are not the expert.

In practice firms, especially US ones, a lot of the work is preparation. You take a client's documents, prepare a draft return in software like UltraTax, Lacerte or Drake, and send it to a reviewer who signs it. Offshore preparers do a big share of this work for US firms during busy season.

Advisory work, such as structuring, transfer pricing or crypto taxation, comes later and usually needs a senior qualification and a track record.

A day in the role

  1. Prepare the month's VAT and withholding tax schedules from the ledger and reconcile them to the filed returns
  2. Draft a corporate tax computation and list the adjustments: disallowed expenses, capital allowances, losses brought forward
  3. Prepare US individual or business returns from client documents and clear the reviewer's notes
  4. Chase clients for missing documents, such as a 1099 or a dividend statement, before the filing deadline
  5. Update the multi-country tax calendar and flag filings due in the next 30 days
  6. Research a technical question and write a short memo with the rule, the facts and your conclusion
  7. Prepare schedules for auditors on the tax charge and deferred tax

Skills you need

Core skills

Corporate tax computations

The base of most in-house and African multi-country roles. One Nigeria-based remote ad in 2026 asked for five years of corporate tax experience after articleship.

Indirect tax: VAT and sales tax

VAT in Nigeria, the UK and EU, and sales tax in the US are where e-commerce and fintech businesses most often need help.

Withholding tax

Nigerian and African companies deal with it on almost every supplier payment. Getting it wrong creates penalties and supplier disputes.

US individual and business returns

If you target US firms, you must know Form 1040, Schedule C and business returns well enough that a reviewer trusts your draft.

Tax research and memo writing

Remote reviewers need a clear written trail: the rule, the facts and your conclusion.

Transfer pricing basics

Groups with entities across Africa need intercompany charges that tax authorities accept.

Tax software

US firms use UltraTax, Lacerte, Drake, ProSeries or CCH Axcess. Learning one shortens your first busy season.

Excel

Computations, reconciliations and multi-country calendars are built here.

Soft skills

Deadline discipline

Tax deadlines do not move. A late filing costs the client real money.

Careful reading

One misread line in a law or a client document changes the answer.

Integrity

Clients sometimes ask for things that are not legal. You need to say no and explain why.

Tools you'll use

  • UltraTax CS, Lacerte, Drake or ProSeries

US professional tax software; offshore preparers work in whatever the firm uses.

  • CCH Axcess

    Common at larger US firms.

  • Avalara

Sales tax automation used by many US e-commerce businesses.

  • Excel

    Computations, reconciliations, provision schedules.

  • The tax authority portals

Federal and state tax portals in Nigeria; IRS e-services for US preparers.

  • Secure client portals

US firms use portals such as SmartVault or ShareFile for documents; never email tax documents casually.

Where to learn

Career path

How remote tax accountants usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.

  1. Entry

    Tax trainee or tax associate

    0-2

Usually in a Nigerian audit or tax firm, preparing computations and returns.

  2. Mid-level

    Tax accountant or tax senior

    2-5

Own a client portfolio or an entity's compliance; prepare returns for review.

  3. Senior

    Tax manager

    5-8

Review others' work, multi-country compliance, advisory projects.

  4. Lead

    Head of tax

    8+

Group tax strategy, transfer pricing and relationships with authorities.

Sideways moves

  • Accountant · 2+

General ledger and reporting, if you want a wider finance role.

  • Compliance analyst · 3+

Regulatory compliance at fintechs uses some of the same skills.

Career path for a remote tax accountant: Tax trainee or tax associate (0-2), then Tax accountant or tax senior (2-5), then Tax manager (5-8), then Head of tax (8+). Sideways moves: Accountant, Compliance analyst.

Getting hired from Nigeria

Nigerian and pan-African tax work is the most open market. Fintechs and businesses with entities across Africa post remote tax roles restricted to Nigeria, like the 2026 Tax Accountant (FinTech/Cryptocurrency) ad that wanted five years of corporate tax after articleship, knowledge of Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Zambia, and CA or CIMA membership.

For US work, the realistic route is preparing returns for a US firm's review during busy season, either through an outsourcing firm or directly. Get your PTIN first, learn the 1040 and Schedule C inside out, and practise in the software the firm uses. Enrolled Agent status is a strong signal if you want to stay in US tax, but confirm exam access from Nigeria before you invest.

For UK work, be careful. The Association of Taxation Technicians says people living outside the UK, its crown dependencies or the GCC cannot register for any of its qualifications. Global employers who hire tax staff across EMEA, such as Canonical, ask for ACA, ACCA or CIMA plus CTA, ADIT or equivalent, so ACCA is the more practical route from Nigeria.

In interviews, expect a computation or a return to prepare. Bring a clean, anonymised example of your work if your old employer allows it.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Preparing US returns for pay without a PTIN. It is a legal requirement, not a formality.
  • Paying for a UK tax course before checking whether the body accepts students living in Nigeria.
  • Promising clients outcomes. Tax authorities decide; you advise.
  • Keeping client tax documents on WhatsApp or a personal Google Drive. US firms expect a written security plan and secure portals.
  • Underestimating US busy season: long weeks from February to mid-April, mostly in your afternoon and evening.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian prepare US tax returns remotely?

Yes, as a paid preparer with an IRS PTIN, which foreign preparers without a Social Security number can apply for online with notarised ID. In practice most Nigerians do this work for a US firm, whose licensed staff review and sign.

Do I need CITN if I already have ICAN?

Not legally for most accounting jobs, but CITN membership signals tax specialism to Nigerian and African employers. For foreign employers, ACCA tends to carry more weight than either.

Can I take the UK ATT or CTA from Nigeria?

ATT states that people living outside the UK, its crown dependencies or the GCC cannot register for its qualifications. Check the rules of any UK tax body directly before paying; ACCA's tax papers are the more practical UK-flavoured option.

How much does a remote tax accountant earn from Nigeria?

We have not found reliable published pay for Nigeria-based remote tax roles, so we have not given a range. For context, the US median for accountants and auditors was $83,680 in May 2025, and UK tax advisers earn £25,000 to £55,000 according to the National Careers Service.

Is Enrolled Agent worth it for a Nigerian?

Only if you want a long career in US tax. It needs a PTIN, passes in all three exam parts within three years and a suitability check. Confirm with the exam vendor that you can sit it from where you live and what it costs, and get a season of US preparation experience before you study.
