How to become a remote people operations specialist from Nigeria
People operations is HR run like an operations team: fewer policies on paper, more workflows, systems and data. For Nigerians it's one of the better ways into people work at global companies, because a remote startup with staff in 30 countries needs someone who can make onboarding, contracts and records work everywhere, whatever the time zone.
You'll still need judgement and discretion, and senior roles expect real HR knowledge. But the entry skills are learnable: an HR system, a contractor platform like Deel or Remote.com, spreadsheets, automation tools and very good written process. People who come from admin, executive support or operations make the switch often.

What a remote people operations specialist does
A people operations specialist makes sure every employee touchpoint runs without friction. When someone is hired, they trigger the contract (often through an employer of record), the laptop shipment, the accounts, the onboarding checklist and the first-week plan. While someone works there, they keep records, run benefits and leave admin, answer policy questions and maintain the handbook. When someone leaves, they run offboarding cleanly.
The 'operations' part is the difference. People ops specialists build and maintain the systems: HRIS configuration, automated onboarding tasks, document templates, reporting on headcount and attrition, and the knowledge base employees use instead of messaging HR.
In small companies the role spreads wider. One 2026 people and operations ad at GTO Wizard, open worldwide, combined contracts and onboarding with admin support to the CEO and CFO, remote culture rituals and company merchandise.
A day in the role
- Kick off onboarding for this week's hires: EOR contract status, equipment shipping, account requests and a day-one schedule
- Answer employee questions in the people channel or ticket queue, then turn repeated questions into handbook articles
- Update the HRIS for promotions, address changes and contract amendments
- Reconcile the monthly headcount report between the HRIS, payroll and the EOR platform
- Run an automation, such as a Zapier flow that creates onboarding tasks for IT and the manager when an offer is signed
- Prepare for the next performance or engagement cycle: templates, timelines and reminders
- Organise a remote culture ritual, like a monthly all-hands or a welcome session for new joiners
Skills you need
Core skills
- HRIS administration
BambooHR, HiBob, Rippling, Personio or Workday. People ops owns data quality, permissions and workflows in the system. It's the job's backbone.
- EOR and contractor platforms
Deel, Remote.com and Oyster are how many global startups employ people in Nigeria and elsewhere. Knowing how onboarding, amendments and terminations work on them is a real skill.
- Process design and documentation
Onboarding, offboarding and leave all need clear written steps that work across countries. Remote companies run on these documents.
- Spreadsheets and people data
Headcount, attrition, time-to-onboard and survey results. Lookups, pivots and clean data are expected.
- Automation
Zapier, Make or built-in HRIS workflows that remove manual steps. Small people teams survive on automation.
- HR fundamentals
You'll touch contracts, leave, benefits and policy. Knowing basic HR principles keeps you from creating risk.
- Knowledge base writing
A good handbook in Notion or Confluence answers most questions before anyone asks.
Soft skills
- Service mindset
Employees come to people ops when something's wrong: a payslip error, a visa delay. Calm, quick help builds trust.
- Discretion
You see salaries, health and personal information for everyone in the company.
- Systems thinking
When one employee hits a problem, people ops asks whether the process caused it and fixes it for the next person.

Google Sheets or Excel
People reporting and reconciliations.
Lattice or Culture Amp

Jira Service Management or Zendesk

Getting hired from Nigeria
Lead with systems and process. Hiring managers for people ops want to know which HRIS you've run, which EOR or payroll platforms you've used, and which process you built or fixed. Write it as outcomes: 'moved 120 employee records from spreadsheets into BambooHR and cut onboarding set-up from three days to one'.
If you're coming from admin or EA work, build a people ops portfolio. A one-page onboarding checklist for a fictional company hiring in Lagos, Nairobi and Berlin, a short handbook section on leave written in Notion, and a sample headcount dashboard in Google Sheets show the work far better than a CV line.
Look where global teams hire. In October 2026, remote roles open to Nigeria on Himalayas included GTO Wizard's part-time People & Operations Specialist (worldwide), LigaData's senior people operations role for the Middle East and North Africa, which listed Nigeria among eligible locations, and people partner roles in Nigeria at M-KOPA and Reliance Health. EOR and HR-tech firms such as RemotePeople were hiring employee support roles across EMEA. Some global ads in this space promise unusually high pay for vague duties; check the company carefully before you share documents.
People ops often runs on European or global hours, which suits Lagos. Have reliable power and internet for onboarding calls, and ask how you'll be employed and paid: directly, through an EOR, or as a contractor to a Payoneer or Grey account.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Treating people ops as 'HR admin with a new name'. Employers expect you to improve processes and systems, not only process requests.
- Building automations on messy data. Clean the HRIS first, or the automation spreads the errors.
- Writing policies for one country and applying them everywhere. Check local rules or the EOR's guidance per country.
- Sharing employee data in Slack DMs or spreadsheets with open links. Use the HRIS and restricted folders.
- Applying to roles with generic duties and very high pay from companies you can't verify. Look for a real website, real staff and a named hiring manager.
- Ignoring the employee experience side. Fast, kind answers matter as much as a perfect workflow.
Questions people ask
What's the difference between people operations and HR?
People operations is a part of HR focused on systems, processes and data: the HRIS, onboarding, records, contractor and EOR admin, reporting. HR generalists spend more time on employee relations, advice to managers and legal compliance.
Can I move into people ops from an admin or EA role in Nigeria?
Yes, it's a common route. Your organisation and documentation skills transfer directly. Add one HRIS, learn how an EOR platform works and get basic HR knowledge through CIPD Foundation or aPHRi.
How much does a remote people operations specialist earn in Nigeria?
Plane's remote pay data for people operations specialists in Nigeria has a median of about $21,800 a year, with the 10th percentile near $12,300 and the 90th near $36,100. People ops managers earn more.
Do I need a CIPD or HR certificate for people ops?
Not always. Many people ops hires are judged on systems and process experience. A certificate helps if you have little HR background or want to move toward HR generalist work later.
Is people ops a good remote career for Nigerians?
Yes, especially with remote-first companies that hire across countries. The work is largely online and in writing, and European or global hours often suit Lagos well.

- HR Generalist
An HR generalist handles the full spread of people work in an organisation: onboarding, employee records, policies, performance cycles, employee relations and compliance. Nigerians can do it remotely, but HR is tied to employment law, so the realistic remote roles are with EMEA or Africa-focused teams, employer-of-record firms and global companies hiring in Nigeria, not US-only HR desks.
- Recruiter
A recruiter finds, screens and moves candidates through hiring for an employer or agency, from sourcing and first calls to interviews and offers. Nigerians do this remotely for US staffing firms, global recruitment agencies and tech companies hiring African talent, but US-facing roles usually mean working until 10:30pm or later Lagos time.
- Payroll Specialist
A payroll specialist makes sure everyone in an organisation is paid correctly and on time, with the right tax, pension and other deductions, and keeps the records to prove it. You can do it remotely from Nigeria, but payroll is tied to each country's tax rules, so the realistic remote work is multi-country payroll at global employers and EOR firms, or Nigerian payroll for companies that hire here.
- Operations Manager
An operations manager runs the day-to-day machinery of a business: processes, people, suppliers, reporting and the numbers that show whether it all works. Remote operations roles are open to Nigerians, from $1,600-a-month office operations jobs for small US firms to six-figure CX operations posts, but almost all want proof that you've already run something.
