How to become a remote recruiter from Nigeria
Recruiting is one of the more open remote careers for Nigerians, because the core work is phone calls, messages, searching and organising, and none of it needs you in the room. Three kinds of employer hire Nigerian recruiters remotely: US staffing firms filling roles in healthcare, IT and industry; global agencies and recruitment process outsourcers covering EMEA; and tech companies and talent platforms hiring African engineers.
Each comes with a trade-off. US staffing work pays in dollars but runs on Eastern time; a 2026 ad for a US recruiter open to Nigeria set the shift at 8:30am to 5:30pm EST, which is 2:30pm to 11:30pm in Lagos. EMEA and Africa-focused recruiting keeps normal hours but more often pays to local benchmarks.

What a remote recruiter does
A recruiter fills open roles with people who will succeed in them. For each role, that starts with an intake call with the hiring manager to understand what they really need, then writing or posting the job, sourcing candidates on LinkedIn and job boards, screening by phone or video, managing interviews and finally helping the offer land.
Agency recruiters do this for client companies and are judged on placements. US staffing recruiters often work several roles at once, fast, with terms like W2, 1099 and contract-to-hire as part of daily language. In-house recruiters (talent acquisition) work for one company and care more about long-term hiring quality.
Sourcers and recruiting coordinators are the common entry points. Sourcers find and contact candidates; coordinators schedule interviews and keep the pipeline and records clean.
A day in the role
- Run a 30-minute intake call with a hiring manager and write down must-haves, nice-to-haves and the salary band
- Build Boolean searches on LinkedIn and job boards and send personalised outreach to 30 to 50 candidates
- Screen candidates by phone or video for skills, pay expectations, notice period and work authorisation
- Schedule interviews across time zones and send candidates clear prep notes
- Update every candidate's stage and notes in the ATS so the pipeline is accurate
- Chase interviewers for feedback within a day and keep candidates informed
- Send a weekly recap to the hiring team: pipeline numbers, blockers and roles at risk
Skills you need
Core skills
- Sourcing and Boolean search
Finding people who aren't applying is what separates recruiters from job-post administrators. Strings like
("registered nurse" OR RN) AND ICU AND Texasare daily work, and LinkedIn needs straight double quotes around phrases.- Screening calls
In 15 minutes you need to judge fit, pay expectations, availability and red flags, and leave the candidate feeling respected.
- Applicant tracking systems
Greenhouse, Lever, Workable, Ashby or Bullhorn in staffing. Clean ATS records are how remote recruiting teams see each other's work.
- Intake and stakeholder management
Hiring managers often don't know exactly what they want. Good recruiters push back politely and pin it down early.
- Candidate communication
Fast, honest updates keep good candidates from dropping out. Most candidate complaints are about silence.
- Recruiting metrics
Time to fill, pipeline conversion, offer acceptance and quality of hire. A Nigerian tech recruiting ad in 2026 named these as KPIs.
- Employment terms
For US staffing, understand W2, 1099, C2C and pay rates; for EMEA, notice periods and contract types. You'll explain them to candidates every day.
Soft skills
- Resilience
Candidates ghost, offers fall through, clients change their minds. Recruiters who take it personally don't last.
- Persuasion without pressure
You're selling a job to someone who may be happy where they are. Honesty builds the trust that closes offers.
- Organisation at volume
Agency recruiters may carry ten or more roles. Your follow-up system has to hold.
Tools you'll use
LinkedIn Recruiter
The main sourcing tool for professional roles. Employers usually provide the licence.
Greenhouse, Lever, Workable or Ashby
Applicant tracking systems used by tech and growth companies.
Bullhorn
ATS and CRM widely used by staffing agencies.
US job boards such as Indeed and Dice
Common for US staffing roles; Dice is focused on tech.
Google X-ray search
Boolean searches through Google to find profiles and CVs on public sites.
Calendly or GoodTime
Interview scheduling across time zones.
Google Sheets or Excel
Recruitment trackers and weekly recaps, which some employers still prefer to dashboards.
Zoom, Teams and a softphone
Screening calls; US staffing teams often use RingCentral or similar for calls to US numbers.

Getting hired from Nigeria
Decide which kind of recruiting you want, because the hiring routes differ. In October 2026, Himalayas listed remote recruiter roles open to Nigeria from US-facing staffing businesses (Limitlessli's US Recruiter role, open to Nigeria, the Philippines and South Africa on EST hours), global agencies (WilsonHCG, TechBiz Global), talent platforms (Talent Hackers' technical recruiting associate role for Nigeria, which also asked for the ability to work EST), and Nigerian companies hiring in-house, such as Moniepoint and Reliance Health.
Show results in numbers. 'Filled 34 roles in 2025 across nursing and allied health, average 21 days to fill' or 'sourced 60% of hires for a 40-person engineering team' gets a reply. If you're new, a sourcing exercise helps: pick a real public job ad, build a shortlist of ten anonymised profiles with your Boolean strings, and bring it to interviews.
Prepare your setup for calls. Recruiting is phone-heavy, so you need a quiet room, a good headset, a second monitor (Limitlessli's ad listed one as required equipment) and backup internet. For US hours, make sure your inverter or solar covers your whole evening.
Be honest about where you are. Some offshore staffing teams ask recruiters to present themselves differently to US candidates; don't misrepresent your location or identity. Payment usually comes monthly through a payroll platform, or to a Payoneer, Grey or domiciliary account for contractors.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Commission-only 'recruiter' roles with no base pay. They can work for experienced agency recruiters, but they're risky for beginners.
- Being asked to pay for training or a recruiting licence before you start. Legitimate employers provide tools.
- Underestimating US staffing hours. A full EST shift ends at 10:30pm or 11:30pm in Lagos, five days a week.
- Spamming candidates with copy-paste messages. Response rates drop and your LinkedIn account can be restricted.
- Overlooking work authorisation in screening. For US roles, asking about it early saves everyone time.
- Taking a 'recruitment specialist' title at face value. One 2026 ad with that title was for a dating matchmaker sourcing romantic matches, not job candidates.
Questions people ask
Can I become a recruiter in Nigeria without a degree?
Yes. Many recruiter and sourcer ads list a degree as preferred, not required. A track record of filled roles, or a strong sourcing sample if you're new, matters more.
How much does a remote recruiter earn in Nigeria?
Plane's remote pay data for recruiters in Nigeria has a median of about $45,500, with the 10th percentile near $15,100 and the 90th near $93,500. Few recruiter ads open to Nigeria publish pay, so treat this as a broad guide.
What is US IT or staffing recruiting?
It's recruiting for US staffing agencies that place contractors and employees with US clients. You work on US hours, use terms like W2, 1099 and C2C, and fill many roles quickly. It's a common remote route for Nigerian recruiters.
Do I need LinkedIn Recruiter to get started?
No. Employers usually give you a licence. Learn Boolean search on free LinkedIn and Google first so you can show you know how to find people.
Is recruiting a good remote career for Nigerians?
Yes, if you're comfortable on the phone and with targets. There are routes on US, EMEA and African hours, and the skills move between industries. Expect pressure and rejection as part of the job.

- HR Generalist
An HR generalist handles the full spread of people work in an organisation: onboarding, employee records, policies, performance cycles, employee relations and compliance. Nigerians can do it remotely, but HR is tied to employment law, so the realistic remote roles are with EMEA or Africa-focused teams, employer-of-record firms and global companies hiring in Nigeria, not US-only HR desks.
- People Operations Specialist
A people operations specialist runs the systems and processes behind employees at a company: onboarding flows, the HR system, contracts, contractor and EOR admin, benefits, people data and the employee handbook. It suits remote work from Nigeria well, because global startups need someone who can keep people processes running across many countries, and much of it is tools and documentation rather than local employment law.
- Sales Development Representative
A sales development representative (SDR, sometimes BDR) finds and contacts potential business customers by cold call, email and LinkedIn, qualifies them and books meetings for account executives. Nigerians are hired as remote SDRs by software companies, agencies and outsourcing firms, usually on US or European hours, and it's the standard first step towards a closing role.
- Appointment Setter
An appointment setter contacts potential customers by phone, text, LinkedIn or Instagram and books them into calls with a salesperson, coach or consultant. It is a common remote job for Nigerians working with US businesses and agencies, but the market is full of commission-only and pay-to-train offers, so choose employers that pay a base.
