How to become a remote sales development representative from Nigeria
An SDR's job is to create sales conversations that didn't exist yesterday. You research companies, find the right person, reach them with calls, emails and LinkedIn messages, and when they're interested and a fit, book a meeting for the account executive who'll close the deal. You're measured on meetings booked and, increasingly, on how many of those turn into real pipeline.
It's a demanding job: lots of activity, lots of rejection, clear numbers every week. It's also one of the few remote sales roles where Nigerians are hired at entry level, and it leads directly to account executive roles that pay much more. The SDRs who get promoted treat it as a skill to master, not a call quota to survive.

What a remote sales development representative does
SDRs work the top of the sales funnel. Outbound SDRs build lists of target companies and contacts (often in Apollo or LinkedIn Sales Navigator), then run multi-step sequences: a call, an email, a LinkedIn note, another call. Inbound SDRs respond fast to people who've downloaded something or asked for a demo, and qualify them.
Either way the core skill is the same: a short, relevant reason for the prospect to give you 20 minutes. S-PRO's 2026 SDR ad made cold calling the primary channel; TechBiz Global's asked for experience running large outreach campaigns with tools such as Snov.io and Mixmax.
When a prospect agrees, you qualify them against the company's criteria (budget, authority, need, timing are the classic four), book the meeting, write a handover note for the account executive, and make sure the meeting actually happens.
A day in the role
- Research ten to twenty target accounts and find the right contacts in Apollo or Sales Navigator
- Run a focused cold call block during the prospects' morning, logging every outcome in the CRM
- Send personalised emails and LinkedIn messages as part of multi-step sequences
- Reply quickly to inbound leads and qualify them with a short set of questions
- Book meetings on account executives' calendars with a clear handover note
- Review call recordings with your manager and rework your opener or objection handling
- Update your weekly numbers: activities, conversations, meetings booked and held
Skills you need
Core skills
- Cold calling
Many 2026 ads named it the primary channel. A clear opener and the nerve to ask for the meeting are learned by doing.
- Prospect research
Knowing a company's situation before you call turns a cold call into a relevant one.
- Cold email writing
Short, specific emails that sound human still book meetings; generic AI-written sequences get ignored or flagged.
- Qualification
Booking meetings that don't turn into pipeline will get you noticed for the wrong reasons.
- Objection handling
'Not interested', 'we already have a vendor', 'send me info'. Prepared, calm responses turn a share of these into meetings.
- CRM discipline
Every touch logged in HubSpot or Salesforce makes your numbers credible and your handovers useful.
- Using AI for research, not spam
AI tools speed up account research and first drafts. Sending mass AI emails without checking them burns the domain and your reputation.
Soft skills
- Resilience
Most outreach gets no reply. You need to keep standards high on the hundredth call of the week.
- Coachability
Managers review your calls and emails constantly. Fast improvers become AEs.
- Curiosity
Good SDRs ask about the prospect's business instead of reciting the pitch.
Tools you'll use
Apollo.io
Contact data, list building and outreach sequences; very common in SDR ads
HubSpot
CRM and sequences, especially at smaller B2B companies
Salesforce
CRM at larger companies; where your activity and pipeline are tracked
LinkedIn Sales Navigator
Finding decision-makers and social selling
Cloud dialler
Provided by the employer; some use parallel diallers that ring several numbers at once
Snov.io or Mixmax
Email outreach and tracking tools named in some 2026 ads
Gong or call recording
For reviewing your own calls with your manager
Google Workspace
Email, calendars and research notes

Getting hired from Nigeria
Remote SDR roles open to Nigerians come from three places in 2026:
- Worldwide software and services companies, such as S-PRO and TechBiz Global, whose SDR ads were open to all countries.
- Agencies and outsourcing firms hiring for US clients. Hire Hangar's senior BDR role in October 2026 listed Nigeria among 15 eligible countries, but required 3+ years and experience with US or UK companies.
- Nigerian companies hiring SDRs for local or international markets, often as remote or hybrid roles.
Most SDR hiring managers want proof you can do outreach. Build it:
- A prospecting sample. Pick a real company you'd like to work for, choose five target customers it could sell to, and write the cold email and call opener you'd use for each.
- A recorded mock call on Loom, two minutes, including how you handle 'we're not interested'.
- Numbers from any target-driven job: telesales, field sales, recruitment, fundraising, even selling on Instagram.
Be realistic about hours. Selling to the US means calling during their morning, which starts around 2pm in Lagos. Selling into Europe fits Lagos hours better.
Check every employer. One Nigeria-only SDR ad we saw in October 2026 asked candidates to email a different company's domain, which is worth questioning before you send your details. And never pay anyone to 'place' you in a sales job.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Sending hundreds of identical AI-written emails and calling it outreach
- Booking meetings that don't qualify, then wondering why AEs stop trusting your handovers
- Treating cold calling as optional; most 2026 SDR ads list it as a core requirement
- Accepting commission-only 'SDR' roles with no base
- Ignoring the location list on agency ads; many 'Africa' roles name only a few countries
- Staying an SDR for years without asking what it takes to become an AE
Questions people ask
Can I become an SDR in Nigeria with no sales experience?
Yes, some companies hire graduates and career changers, but most remote ads ask for a year of cold calling or similar. Telesales, recruitment or customer service experience helps, and so does a strong mock call video.
How much does a remote SDR earn from Nigeria?
Published base pay in the October 2026 ads we checked ranged from about $650 to $800 a month for a 20-hour week to $1,300 to $1,500 a month for experienced full-time lead generation work. Many SDR roles add commission or bonuses per meeting.
What's the difference between an SDR and a BDR?
Usually very little. Some companies use BDR for outbound and SDR for inbound, others swap them. Read the job description rather than the title.
Is the Salesforce SDR certificate on Coursera worth it?
It gives structure and a recognisable name on your CV, and financial aid is available. Combine it with real practice; hiring managers care more about your calls and emails than the certificate.
How long before an SDR becomes an account executive?
There's no fixed timeline. Strong performers often move up after a year or two, but it depends on the company and whether AE roles open up, so ask about the path at interview.
Do SDRs from Nigeria sell to American companies?
Often, yes. Many remote SDR roles target US businesses and expect US-hours calling and experience with US prospects.

- Account Executive
An account executive (AE) runs the sales process from first meeting to signed contract: discovery calls, demos, proposals, negotiation and closing, against a revenue quota. Nigerians do close deals remotely for US, European and African companies, but AE roles rarely hire beginners, and the pay depends heavily on commission.
- Appointment Setter
An appointment setter contacts potential customers by phone, text, LinkedIn or Instagram and books them into calls with a salesperson, coach or consultant. It is a common remote job for Nigerians working with US businesses and agencies, but the market is full of commission-only and pay-to-train offers, so choose employers that pay a base.
- Business Development Manager
A business development manager finds and wins new customers, partners or markets for a company, usually with a revenue or pipeline target and commission on top of base pay. Nigerians do it remotely for fintech, SaaS, logistics and payments companies, especially roles covering Africa, though some jobs expect travel.
- Customer Success Manager
A customer success manager (CSM) owns a group of business customers after they buy, making sure they get results from the product so they renew and spend more. Nigerians do win remote CSM roles, including EMEA roles at global software companies, but it is rarely a first job: most CSMs come from support, onboarding or account management.
