How to become a remote account executive from Nigeria
Account executives are the closers. An SDR or a marketing campaign brings in the meeting; the AE turns it into revenue. You run discovery, demo the product, handle the objections, agree the price and get the contract signed, and you carry a number, a quota, that decides most of your pay.
The remote AE market for Nigerians splits in two. Agencies and outsourcing firms hire Africa-based AEs to sell to US small businesses, on US hours, for modest base pay plus commission. Global software companies hire AEs for EMEA, but most of the October 2026 EMEA ads we read were for named European markets (France, Benelux, the Nordics, DACH), which usually means selling in that market's language. Selling into African markets for a global firm is the third, smaller door, and often the best fit.

What a remote account executive does
An AE owns deals from the first meeting to signature. The work follows a sales process:
Discovery. Find out what the prospect is trying to fix, what it costs them, who decides and by when. Good AEs spend more time asking than pitching.
Demo and proposal. Show only the parts of the product that solve what you heard, then put a clear proposal in writing.
Negotiation and close. Handle pricing, legal and procurement questions, keep the deal moving, and get the contract signed.
Around that, you manage a pipeline in the CRM and forecast which deals will close this month or quarter. Managers check those forecasts closely, because the company plans its spending on them.
What you sell changes the job. Scale Army's 2026 AE role sold marketing services to US e-commerce brands and tested candidates on Google Sheets live. Pavago's sold for a US digital marketing agency and required GoHighLevel. Telovate's Nigerian-based role sold telecom services to US consumers and businesses on an afternoon shift.
A day in the role
- Review your pipeline in Salesforce or HubSpot and decide which three deals need action today
- Run a discovery call on Zoom, taking notes on the prospect's problem, budget, timeline and decision-makers
- Deliver a tailored demo, showing only what matters to this buyer
- Send a written follow-up and proposal the same day
- Handle a pricing objection or a procurement question by email
- Update deal stages, next steps and close dates so the forecast is accurate
- Review a recorded call in Gong with your manager and plan the next step for a stuck deal
- Hand closed customers to onboarding or customer success with full notes
Skills you need
Core skills
- Discovery questioning
Deals are won by understanding the buyer's problem better than competitors do. Most weak AEs pitch too early.
- Demo skills
A focused demo tied to the buyer's own words closes more than a full product tour.
- Qualification frameworks
Methods such as MEDDICC or BANT help you spot deals that will never close, so you spend time on ones that will.
- Negotiation
Holding price, trading concessions for commitments and knowing your walk-away point protect your commission and the company's margin.
- Pipeline management and forecasting
Managers trust AEs whose forecast matches what actually closes.
- Written proposals and follow-ups
Remote deals are often decided by people who never joined the call; your written summary sells for you.
- Prospecting your own pipeline
Many smaller companies expect AEs to source part of their own deals, using tools like Apollo and Sales Navigator.
Soft skills
- Composure under quota pressure
Every month or quarter resets. Calm, steady AEs make better decisions at month end.
- Commercial confidence
Talking money with a director in another country without apologising for the price is part of the job.
- Cross-cultural communication
American, British, European and African buyers expect different pace and directness; adjusting builds trust.
- Ownership
When a deal slips, the AE chases legal, finance and the customer until it moves.

Getting hired from Nigeria
Few companies hire first-time AEs remotely. The realistic route is to close deals somewhere first: as an SDR who has been promoted, an inside sales rep at a Nigerian company, or a field salesperson with a track record. Then use those numbers.
Where remote AE roles open to Nigerians come from:
- Agencies and outsourcing firms selling to US businesses. Hire Hangar's October 2026 AE role paid $18,000 to $30,000 a year for 2+ years of closing experience (its country list named Ethiopia, Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco among others), and its sales manager role at $1,500 to $2,500 a month listed Nigeria explicitly. Scale Army and Pavago also advertised AE roles open to Africa.
- Nigerian or Nigeria-based roles selling abroad, such as Telovate's remote role selling telecom services to US customers at ₦400,000 to ₦600,000 a month plus commission.
- Global companies selling into Africa, which sometimes hire AEs or account managers in West Africa for the region.
Your CV is a sales document. Lead with closed revenue, quota attainment and deal size: 'Closed ₦210m in 2025, 118% of quota, average deal ₦6m, 45-day cycle'. Be ready to prove it; good employers check.
Expect a mock discovery call or a full mock sales cycle in interviews, plus video applications for agency roles (Hire Hangar and Scale Army both asked for recorded videos).
Commission is where AE pay is made, so read the compensation plan before you sign: the quota, the commission rate, when it's paid, and whether there's a cap or clawback if a customer cancels.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Applying for AE roles without any closing record; most ads ask for at least two years
- Putting vague claims on your CV ('strong closer') instead of quota and revenue figures
- Signing a compensation plan you haven't read, including clawbacks and caps
- Taking commission-only 'AE' roles where the leads are poor and the base is zero
- Pitching in demos instead of running discovery first
- Overlooking language requirements: many EMEA AE roles are for a specific European market
Questions people ask
Can I become a remote account executive in Nigeria without experience?
Not usually. Remote AE ads typically ask for two or more years of closing experience. Start as an SDR or in inside sales, build a record of closed deals, then apply.
How much does a remote account executive earn from Nigeria?
Published base pay in the October 2026 ads we checked ranged from ₦400,000 to ₦600,000 a month plus commission for a Nigeria-based role selling to US customers, to $18,000 to $30,000 a year for agency AE roles open to Africa. Commission can add a lot on top if you hit quota.
What does OTE mean for an account executive?
On-target earnings: your base salary plus the commission you'd earn by hitting 100% of quota. A common structure is a split between base and variable, so check the actual figures in each offer.
What's the difference between an SDR and an account executive?
SDRs create and qualify meetings; AEs run those meetings and close deals. AEs carry a revenue quota and usually earn more.
Can Nigerians sell to American companies remotely?
Yes. Many agency AE roles open to Africa sell to US businesses on US Eastern hours, which run from about 2pm to 10pm in Lagos for most of the year.

- Sales Development Representative
A sales development representative (SDR, sometimes BDR) finds and contacts potential business customers by cold call, email and LinkedIn, qualifies them and books meetings for account executives. Nigerians are hired as remote SDRs by software companies, agencies and outsourcing firms, usually on US or European hours, and it's the standard first step towards a closing role.
- Business Development Manager
A business development manager finds and wins new customers, partners or markets for a company, usually with a revenue or pipeline target and commission on top of base pay. Nigerians do it remotely for fintech, SaaS, logistics and payments companies, especially roles covering Africa, though some jobs expect travel.
- Customer Success Manager
A customer success manager (CSM) owns a group of business customers after they buy, making sure they get results from the product so they renew and spend more. Nigerians do win remote CSM roles, including EMEA roles at global software companies, but it is rarely a first job: most CSMs come from support, onboarding or account management.
- Appointment Setter
An appointment setter contacts potential customers by phone, text, LinkedIn or Instagram and books them into calls with a salesperson, coach or consultant. It is a common remote job for Nigerians working with US businesses and agencies, but the market is full of commission-only and pay-to-train offers, so choose employers that pay a base.
