How to become a remote accounts receivable specialist from Nigeria

Accounts receivable is a good fit for remote work from Nigeria if you write well, are comfortable on the phone with foreign customers and can keep a ledger tidy. Employers want to see invoicing and cash allocation experience in Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or an ERP, and for credit control roles, proof that you have actually collected overdue money.

The role has three parts, and remote ads often only want one: invoicing (getting bills out correctly), cash application (matching what comes in) and credit control (chasing what does not). Knowing which one an ad is for helps you pitch your CV.

What a remote accounts receivable specialist does

On the invoicing side, you raise invoices from contracts, timesheets or the billing system, check the customer's purchase order number and VAT or sales tax are right, and send them the way the customer wants, which is often through a supplier portal you have to log in to.

On the cash side, you match each payment to the invoices it is paying. Customers pay three invoices in one transfer, short-pay because of a dispute, or pay without a reference. Unmatched money sits in "unapplied cash" until you work it out.

Credit control is the chasing. You send reminder emails on a schedule, call the customer's AP team, agree payment plans, raise credit notes for genuine disputes and tell sales when an account should be put on stop. In UK firms this is often a separate job title, credit controller.

A day in the role

  1. Raise the day's invoices from the billing system and upload them to customer portals that will not accept email
  2. Match yesterday's receipts to open invoices using remittance advices, and email customers about payments without references
  3. Work the aged debtors report: reminder emails for 7 days overdue, calls for 30 days, escalation for 60
  4. Log disputes with the reason and owner, and chase sales or operations for the information to fix them
  5. Retry failed direct debits in GoCardless or Stripe and contact the customer before the second attempt
  6. Prepare a weekly overdue report for the finance manager with the top ten accounts and next actions
  7. Close the month: agree the AR ledger to the balance sheet and list anything that may need a bad debt provision

Skills you need

Core skills

Cash application

Matching payments to invoices correctly is the heart of AR. Unapplied or misapplied cash makes customers look overdue when they are not, and ruins your collection calls.

Invoicing accuracy

Many late payments start with a wrong invoice: missing PO number, wrong entity, wrong tax. Getting it right first time is the cheapest collection.

Collections and credit control

Credit control ads want evidence that you have reduced overdue balances. Know how you would run a reminder schedule and when to escalate.

Accounting software

UK offshore AR ads ask for Xero, QuickBooks or Sage. Global companies use enterprise systems such as NetSuite.

Payment platforms

Subscription businesses collect through Stripe or GoCardless direct debit. You need to handle failed payments, refunds and payouts.

UK VAT or US sales tax on invoices

One UK AR ad in 2026 listed UK VAT invoicing experience as a requirement. A wrong tax line can get an invoice rejected.

Ageing and reporting

Managers want to know who owes what and for how long. Build ageing reports and track days sales outstanding.

Spreadsheets

For matching large remittances, bulk invoice checks and overdue reports.

Soft skills

Firm, friendly phone manner

You will call accounts payable teams in Birmingham or Ohio about money they owe. Calm persistence works; aggression does not.

Clear written English

Most chasing is by email. A short, specific email with the invoice attached gets paid faster than a long polite one.

Patience with disputes

Many disputes are your own side's fault: wrong price, missing delivery note. You need to fix it internally without blaming anyone.

Tools you'll use

  • Xero

UK small-business AR, including repeating invoices and reminders. Free certification.

  • QuickBooks Online

    US small-business invoicing and payments.

  • Sage

Still common in established UK companies' sales ledgers.

  • Oracle NetSuite

Used by larger global companies for billing and AR.

  • GoCardless

UK direct debit collection; failed payments land with AR.

  • Stripe

Card and subscription payments; you reconcile payouts and chase failed charges.

  • Zoho Books

Named alongside Xero and QuickBooks in some invoicing ads.

  • Chaser or the reminder feature in Xero

Automated reminder schedules for overdue invoices.

  • Excel or Google Sheets

    Remittance matching and overdue reports.

Where to learn

Career path

How remote accounts receivable specialists usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.

Sideways moves

  • Customer success manager · 3+

With ICAN or ACCA study, move into wider accounting.

Career path for a remote accounts receivable specialist: AR clerk or invoicing administrator (0-2), then AR specialist or credit controller (2-4), then Senior credit controller or AR lead (4-7), then Credit manager or order-to-cash manager (7+). Sideways moves: Customer success manager, Accountant.

Getting hired from Nigeria

Start with ads that match your strongest part of AR. If you have mostly allocated cash, apply for cash application or AR clerk roles. If you have phoned customers and brought down an overdue balance, apply for credit control and say by how much.

Offshore staffing firms place AR and credit control staff with UK businesses; one recruiter's October 2026 ads all wanted Xero, QuickBooks or Sage, UK VAT invoicing and UK office hours, but were for South Africans only. Large global employers also hire AR remotely: Canonical, for example, advertised an Accounts Receivable Clerk as "Home based, EMEA" in October 2026, asking for strong results in an accounting or finance subject and enterprise accounting system experience.

Put numbers on your CV. "Cut debtors over 60 days from ₦48m to ₦19m in six months by setting up a weekly call list" works for foreign employers too; they understand the shape of it even if the currency is unfamiliar.

Credit control is phone work, so your call quality matters. Use a good headset, a quiet room and a backup internet connection. UK hours are easy from Lagos (9am to 5pm UK is 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter and the same in summer). US customers mean calling into your evening.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Chasing customers before checking that their payment hasn't already arrived as unapplied cash. Nothing loses goodwill faster.
  • Writing long, apologetic reminder emails. Short and specific gets paid.
  • Treating every dispute as the customer's fault. Many are pricing or delivery errors on your side.
  • Applying to South Africa-only or US-only ads. Read the location line before you spend an hour on the application.
  • Agreeing payment plans or credit notes without approval. Know your authority limits in writing.

Questions people ask

Can I get a remote accounts receivable job from Nigeria?

Yes, but fewer ads are open to Nigerians than to South Africans in this field. Global employers that hire across EMEA and freelance or contract work with smaller UK and US companies are the most realistic routes.

What is the difference between accounts receivable and credit control?

Accounts receivable is the whole process of invoicing customers and recording what they pay. Credit control is the part where you chase overdue invoices and manage credit limits. In UK companies credit controller is often a separate job title.

How much does a remote AR specialist earn?

October 2026 offshore ads for UK firms paid about $16,600 to $18,100 a year for AR clerk and invoicing roles and about $21,000 to $23,200 for credit control, for South African applicants. Our AR salary page has the sources.

Do I need a degree for accounts receivable?

Not for most small-business roles, where software skills and collection results matter more. Larger employers like Canonical ask for an accounting or finance subject, so a degree or professional study helps there.

Is credit control stressful?

It can be at month-end, when everyone wants the overdue figure down. A clear reminder schedule, good notes on every call and quick dispute fixes make it much calmer.
