Best Accounting Certifications for Remote Jobs: A Guide for Nigerians

Which accounting certifications help Nigerians get remote jobs? QuickBooks, Xero, ACCA, ICAN, CMA, CPA and EA compared on cost, access and fit.

For most Nigerians, the accounting certifications that pay off fastest for remote jobs are the free QuickBooks Online and Xero certifications, plus ACCA if you want a professional qualification that foreign employers recognise. The US CMA, US CPA and IRS Enrolled Agent credentials can open better-paid doors, but each one has costs or travel requirements you should understand before you start studying.

Remote accounting hiring has a problem that office hiring doesn't have. A recruiter in London or Texas can't easily judge an ICAN certificate or a Nigerian degree. A credential they already know reduces that doubt, and so does proof that you can use the software their clients use.

This guide compares seven accounting certifications. For each one we cover what it costs as of October 2026, how long it takes, if you can sit it from Nigeria and which remote jobs it suits. We also explain how we chose them, so you can judge the list for yourself.

Quick answer

If you're starting out in remote bookkeeping, get the free QuickBooks Online and Xero certifications first. They take days, not years. For a long-term remote accounting career with UK, European or African employers, ACCA is the most portable choice from Nigeria. Choose US CMA for remote finance and FP&A roles. Consider the US CPA or IRS Enrolled Agent only if you're aiming specifically at US clients.

How we chose these certifications

We didn't rank these credentials by prestige. We ranked them by how useful they are to someone who lives in Nigeria and wants remote work. We used four criteria:

  • Recognition by foreign employers. Would a hiring manager abroad know what the credential means?
  • Access from Nigeria. Can you register, pay and sit the exams without moving or flying out?
  • Cost compared with likely return. Free and cheap credentials score higher for beginners.
  • Fit with remote job types. Remote accounting work is mostly bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, month-end close, tax preparation and FP&A (financial planning and analysis). Some credentials match those tasks better than others.

All the costs below come from the official body's own page or a named exam-prep provider, and we checked them in October 2026. Fees change often, so confirm the current figure before you pay.

Free software certifications: where most remote bookkeepers should start

Remote bookkeeping and accounts roles often care more about whether you can use the client's software than about your letters after your name. A small US business owner using QuickBooks wants someone who can reconcile their bank feeds next week. They aren't asking who passed the most papers.

Both of the big cloud accounting platforms give their certification away for free. That makes these the cheapest way to show a foreign client a credential they recognise.

QuickBooks Online Certification (Intuit)

Intuit's QuickBooks Online certification page describes it as a free credential that shows you're proficient in QuickBooks Online. You sign up for a free QuickBooks Online Accountant account, open the ProAdvisor section, go to the Training tab, work through the self-paced modules and take the exam. Intuit also runs live online certification classes, but the event dates on the page we checked had already passed, so look in your account for current sessions.

QuickBooks is mostly used by US small businesses. It suits you if you're aiming at US bookkeeping clients, remote accounts payable roles or US-based virtual assistant agencies.

There's one catch. The QuickBooks Online Accountant account is free, but if a client's subscription is billed to you rather than to them, Intuit charges you. Keep billing in the client's name.

Xero certification

Xero's certification page says plainly that "Xero certification is free." As of October 2026 there are three levels:

  • Level 1, Associate: entering financial data and setting up an organisation in Xero.
  • Level 2, Professional: more complex features and keeping records accurate for period-end reporting.
  • Level 3, Specialist: advanced features for running a business fully on Xero.

There are also Payroll Specialist and Migration Specialist badges. You complete the levels in order. For each level you can choose self-paced modules, a live webinar or an assessment-only route if you already know the software. A pass gives you a digital badge and a certificate. Certifications last 12 months, and you renew with an annual recertification assessment that has an 80% pass mark.

Xero is widely used in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. If you want UK accounting practices or Australian clients, Xero matters more than QuickBooks. Many Nigerians take both in the same month.

Why the yearly renewal matters

Both software certifications expire or need recertifying, so write the date on your CV, for example "Xero Advisor Certified (Level 2), valid to October 2027". An expired badge on your LinkedIn profile tells a careful client that you aren't keeping up.

ACCA: the most portable professional qualification from Nigeria

ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is a UK-based body with exams you can sit in Nigeria. For a Nigerian who wants remote accountant roles, rather than bookkeeping alone, it's usually the strongest professional option. UK, Irish, Middle Eastern and many African employers know it, and because it's built on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), it fits multinational and outsourced accounting work.

What ACCA costs as of October 2026

ACCA's fees page lists charges in pounds. The figures it showed for 2026:

FeeAmount
Initial registration (one-off)£89
Annual subscription, 2026£140
Applied Skills exam, December 2026, standard entry£143 per exam
Applied Skills exam, late entry£366 per exam
Strategic Business Leader, standard entry£252
Other Strategic Professional exams, standard entry£180 each
Ethics and Professional Skills Module£83

The page also shows a lower second figure for some items (for example £36 registration and £63 first-year subscription), which seems to be a reduced rate for some markets. Check the quote in your myACCA account to see which rate applies to you. For the December 2026 sitting, standard entry for Applied Skills exams closes on 2 November 2026 and late entry closes on 9 November 2026.

Late entry costs more than twice the standard fee, so book early. Paying in pounds from Nigeria also takes planning, because naira cards often have low international spending limits. A dollar or pound virtual card, or a family member abroad paying for you, can help. Our guide to receiving and holding dollars in Nigeria compares the apps people use.

Who should take ACCA

  • Accounting graduates and HND holders who want remote accountant, accounts assistant or audit support roles with UK or international firms.
  • ICAN members who want a second credential that foreign recruiters recognise.
  • Anyone aiming at UK outsourced accounting practices. These firms hire offshore staff to prepare accounts and often ask for ACCA part-qualified or qualified candidates.

You don't have to finish ACCA before you apply. Remote job ads often accept "ACCA part-qualified" or "studying towards ACCA", so list the papers you've passed on your CV as you go.

ICAN: strong at home, less known abroad

ICAN (the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria) is the main chartered accountancy body in Nigeria. You pay in naira, the material covers Nigerian law and tax, and Nigerian employers trust it. If your remote work is with Nigerian companies, Nigerian fintechs or foreign firms that need someone to handle Nigerian compliance, ICAN carries real weight.

Outside Nigeria, a hiring manager may simply not have heard of it. That doesn't make it a weak qualification. It means that when you apply abroad you should explain it in one line on your CV, for example "ICAN (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria), chartered accountant, IFRS-based syllabus", and back it up with the software certifications above. Check ICAN's current fees on its official website, because we didn't verify them for this guide.

The common Nigerian question is whether to do ICAN or ACCA. For remote work aimed abroad, ACCA travels further. For remote work tied to Nigeria, ICAN is enough. Many professionals end up holding both.

US CMA: for remote management accounting and FP&A

The CMA (Certified Management Accountant) is awarded by IMA (Institute of Management Accountants), a US body. It covers budgeting, forecasting, cost management, performance analysis and corporate finance. Those are the day-to-day tasks of remote FP&A analyst, financial analyst and management accountant roles at US and global companies.

Structure, cost and eligibility

According to UWorld's CMA exam overview (UWorld sells CMA exam prep), as of October 2026:

  • Two parts, each four hours long: Part 1, Financial Planning, Performance and Analytics; Part 2, Strategic Financial Management.
  • Exam fee: $545 a part for professionals, $407 a part for students (in effect since 1 September 2025, everywhere except China).
  • Entrance fee: $300 for professionals, $225 for students. You can't get it back.
  • IMA membership: $49 a year for students and up to $295 a year for professionals.
  • Total for a professional member (membership, entrance fee and both parts, without study materials): about $1,685, which is roughly ₦2,295,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN rate, 23 October 2026).
  • Testing: three windows a year (January/February, May/June, September/October), at Prometric test centres or remotely through Prometric's ProProctor service.
  • Eligibility: a bachelor's degree or an approved professional certification, plus two years of relevant experience. You can sit the exams before you have the experience, as long as you prove it within seven years of passing.

Remote proctoring is convenient, but a power cut or dropped connection during a four-hour exam is a serious risk. If you test from home, run the laptop and router on an inverter or solar backup and keep a second internet connection ready. Otherwise, book a Prometric centre.

Choose the CMA if you want analysis work in a US-style finance team rather than bookkeeping or audit. If you're comparing it with investment credentials such as the CFA, read our upcoming guide to finance certifications for international remote careers.

US CPA: powerful, but hard to reach from Nigeria

The CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is the licence for US public accounting. US audit and accounting firms value it highly, including firms that outsource work to offshore teams. For a Nigerian, though, it's the hardest credential on this list to get.

The first barrier is that you can't sit the exam in Nigeria. NASBA's international exam page lists the countries outside the US where candidates can test. As of October 2026 they include Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, England, Ireland, Saudi Arabia and India, but not Nigeria. A Nigerian candidate would need to travel, usually to Dubai, Cairo or London, and that means a visa and travel costs for every section.

The second barrier is cost. NASBA charges an international testing fee of $390 for each exam section taken outside the US, on top of the normal domestic exam fees. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN rate, 23 October 2026), that surcharge alone is about ₦531,000 a section.

The third barrier is paperwork. You first establish eligibility through a US state board of accountancy that takes part in international testing (NASBA notes that Alabama, Idaho, North Carolina and the Virgin Islands don't). Each state has its own education rules, and foreign degrees usually need a formal evaluation.

The CPA can still be worth it if you're aiming high in US accounting, already work with US firms or plan to relocate eventually. For most Nigerians starting out in remote work, ACCA plus QuickBooks gets you hired sooner and for far less money.

IRS Enrolled Agent: a niche route into US tax work

An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a tax practitioner licensed by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS's enrolled agent information page calls it "the highest credential the IRS awards". EAs have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS, the same as attorneys and CPAs.

The IRS's steps to become an enrolled agent are:

  1. Get a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number).
  2. Pass all three parts of the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE) within three years.
  3. Apply on Form 23 and pay the enrolment fee.
  4. Pass a suitability check covering tax compliance and criminal history.

One important change for 2026: since 1 March 2026, PSI Services has run the SEE instead of Prometric. Older blog posts that mention Prometric centres are out of date. The IRS page doesn't say whether candidates outside the US can test, or how. Before you pay for a prep course, check PSI's candidate bulletin to see if you can sit the exam from Nigeria, either by remote proctoring or by travelling. After you qualify, EAs must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years.

The EA suits people who want seasonal or year-round US tax preparation work for remote tax firms. It doesn't help much outside US tax. If tax work interests you, our planned guide to remote tax preparation jobs covers the roles in more detail.

What remote employers check besides certificates

Certificates get you past the first filter. They rarely get you hired on their own. When we looked through worldwide remote finance listings on DailyRemote's Nigeria finance page in October 2026, most ads asked for years of experience and named tools and standards (Zoho Books, IFRS, Excel, Power BI, ERP systems) rather than a particular credential. Many also hid the company's name, so check the employer independently before sharing documents.

Example (hypothetical): Two Nigerian candidates apply for a remote bookkeeping role with a UK practice. One is an ICAN member with no software certificate. The other has passed four ACCA papers, holds Xero Level 2 and links to a short video showing a bank reconciliation in a demo Xero company. The second candidate is far easier for the practice to judge, even though the first has the higher qualification.

Practical signals that help alongside a certificate:

  • A demo file or screen recording showing you closing a month in QuickBooks or Xero.
  • Excel skills: lookups, pivot tables and a clean reconciliation template.
  • Clear written English in your application, because remote teams mostly communicate in writing.
  • Working hours that suit the client. UK practices work 9am to 5pm GMT in winter, which is 10am to 6pm in Lagos. US Eastern clients start at 9am, which is 3pm in Lagos from 1 November 2026.

A certificate also doesn't change whether a job is open to you. Many remote accounting roles are restricted to residents of one country, for tax or data rules. Read the location line on every ad before you apply. On WorkRemote's accounting job listings, each listing shows where applicants may live.

Mistakes Nigerians make when choosing accounting certifications

  • Starting with the most expensive credential. Paying for CPA review before checking that you can travel to a test centre wastes money you could have spent on ACCA papers.
  • Ignoring the free certifications. QuickBooks and Xero cost nothing and answer the first question many remote clients ask.
  • Letting badges expire. Both software certifications need yearly renewal.
  • Paying "agents" to guarantee certification or a job. Register only on the official body's website. Nobody can sell you a pass or a guaranteed remote job. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria explains the warning signs.
  • Not explaining Nigerian credentials. Add a short line describing ICAN or your degree for foreign readers.
  • Booking late. ACCA late entry costs more than twice the standard fee.

Frequently asked questions

Is ACCA good for remote jobs in Nigeria?

Yes. ACCA is one of the most useful qualifications for Nigerians seeking remote accounting work with UK, European, Middle Eastern and African employers, because they recognise it and it's based on IFRS. Many remote ads accept part-qualified candidates, so list your passed papers on your CV while you study.

Is the QuickBooks certification really free?

Yes. As of October 2026, Intuit's QuickBooks Online certification training and exam are free through a QuickBooks Online Accountant account. You only pay if you take on billing for a client's QuickBooks subscription yourself.

Can a Nigerian take the US CPA exam?

Yes, but not in Nigeria. As of October 2026, NASBA's list of international testing locations doesn't include Nigeria, so Nigerian candidates travel to places such as the UAE, Egypt or England and pay a $390 international fee per section on top of the normal fees. You also need eligibility through a participating US state board.

Should I do ICAN or ACCA for remote work?

Choose ACCA if you mainly want foreign employers, and ICAN if your remote work will be with Nigerian companies or Nigerian compliance. ICAN is the stronger credential at home but less known abroad. Many accountants hold both and explain ICAN in one line on their CV.

Do I need a certification to get a remote bookkeeping job?

No, but it helps a lot when you have little experience. Remote clients mainly want proof that you can use their software and keep accurate records, which is why free QuickBooks and Xero certifications plus a demo file work well. Our planned guide to remote bookkeeping jobs for beginners covers the entry route.

Can I sit the CMA exam from home in Nigeria?

Yes. As of October 2026, the CMA can be taken remotely through Prometric's ProProctor service as well as at Prometric test centres. Each part lasts four hours, so if you test at home, use backup power and a second internet connection, or book a centre to avoid losing an attempt to a power cut.

Will a certification increase my remote salary?

It can, but pay depends more on the role, the employer's country and your experience than on the certificate alone. Recognised credentials such as ACCA, CMA and CPA tend to open better-paid accountant and finance roles. See our planned guide to how much remote accountants earn for figures.

Key takeaways

  • The free QuickBooks Online and Xero certifications are the fastest, cheapest credentials for remote bookkeeping, but they need renewing every year.
  • ACCA is the most portable professional accounting qualification for Nigerians targeting remote work abroad. Book exams at standard entry to avoid paying more than double.
  • ICAN is strong for Nigerian employers. Explain it briefly when you apply abroad.
  • US CMA suits remote FP&A and management accounting and costs about $1,685 before study materials (as of October 2026).
  • The US CPA has no test centre in Nigeria, and the IRS Enrolled Agent exam moved to PSI in March 2026. Check access before paying for prep.
  • Certificates open doors, but software skills, a demo of your work and eligibility for the job's location decide if you get hired.
