How Much Do Remote Accountants Earn? Pay Benchmarks and What Nigerians Can Expect

US remote accountants earn a $83,680 median, but Nigeria-based pay differs. See verified figures, what drives pay and how to value a dollar offer.

The best public benchmark for remote accountant pay is the US median for accountants and auditors: $83,680 a year in May 2025, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. A remote accountant working from Nigeria will almost never be offered that. Most international employers pay according to where you live, and there is very little reliable public data on what they pay accountants based in Nigeria.

That gap is why this page exists. Instead of quoting one made-up "average", we show the figures we could verify as of October 2026, explain why they differ so much, and set out what actually moves an accountant's remote pay up or down: your qualification, the accounting standards you know, your software, your seniority, the type of contract and the time zone. We finish with a worked example that turns a dollar offer into naira, so you can judge an offer properly before you accept it.

Quick answer

Remote accountants in the US earn a median of $83,680 a year (BLS, May 2025), and bookkeeping clerks earn $50,670. Accountants based in Nigeria working remotely for foreign companies usually earn much less, because most employers set pay by location. Published pay for Nigeria-based roles is scarce. What decides your figure is the employer's pay policy, your qualification (ICAN, ACCA, CPA), the standards you know, your software skills and your seniority.

Remote accountant pay figures we could verify (as of October 2026)

Every figure below comes from a page we opened in October 2026. They measure different things, so read the "what it measures" column before comparing them.

SourceWhat it measuresFigure
BLS, May 2025US accountants and auditors, median, all work arrangements$83,680 a year

Remote Rocketship listingOne Nigeria-remote "Lead Accountant" ad from a Nigerian employer₦200,000 to ₦300,000 a month

Some notes on each source.

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook page for accountants and auditors is the most reliable figure here. It covers people working in the US, whether in an office or remote. It also shows pay by industry. In May 2025 the median was $93,290 in finance and insurance, $91,940 in management of companies and $81,490 in accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll firms. The typical entry route is a bachelor's degree in accounting, and BLS notes that a CPA licence can improve prospects.

The BLS page for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks puts the median at $50,670 (May 2025), with the lowest 10% under $36,000 and the highest 10% above $74,550. Many "remote accountant" ads aimed at international applicants are really bookkeeping or accounts payable work. Compare against this figure for those roles, not the accountant one.

Plane's salary page for remote accountants in Nigeria gives a median base salary of $8,872 a year. That is about $740 a month, or roughly ₦1,007,000 a month at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). Treat it as a rough signal only. Plane doesn't publish its method or the date of its data, and its 10th percentile of $40 a year can't be a real salary. That suggests the sample is small or messy.

The Remote Rocketship page for accounting jobs in Nigeria had four listings when we checked. Only one showed pay: a Nigeria-remote Lead Accountant role at ₦200,000 to ₦300,000 a month, from a Nigerian employer and paid in naira. That works out to about $147 to $220 a month at the house rate. It is one ad, not an average. Still, it shows that "remote" doesn't mean "paid in dollars".

What we could not find: a current ad from a foreign employer, open to Nigeria, that publishes a dollar salary for an accountant. Remote accounting ads that cover Africa or EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) mostly say pay depends on location and leave the number out. The next section explains why.

Why a US accountant salary is not what you'll be offered

A US salary figure tells you what the job is worth in the US. It doesn't tell you what a company will pay someone living in Lagos, Enugu or Kano.

Most companies with remote staff around the world use location-based pay: they set a salary band for each country or region. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, says this directly in its Accounts Receivable Clerk ad on Greenhouse. The role is home-based in the EMEA region, and the ad says pay depends on geographic location, experience and performance, with a base salary plus an annual bonus. As of October 2026 the ad publishes no figure. It does list a $2,000-a-year learning budget and support for professional accounting qualifications, which are part of the package too.

A smaller number of companies pay the same band wherever you live. These tend to be engineering-heavy startups. Finance roles at these companies are often limited to the countries where the company has legal entities, because accountants handle that country's tax filings and audits.

There is another reason accounting pay is so tied to location. A lot of senior accounting work is licensed or local. Signing an audit opinion, filing a US tax return as a paid preparer, or representing clients before a tax authority usually needs a local licence or registration. Work that needs a licence pays more, and it is the work hardest to do from abroad. What's left for international remote hires is mostly bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, month-end close support, management reporting and consolidation. That work is valuable, but it is priced below the licensed work.

For more on how salary bands are set, see our guide to how international companies set salaries for remote employees.

Where remote accountants in Nigeria usually find paid work

Each type of employer pays differently. This table describes them; it is not a salary table.

Employer typeUsual currencyWhat shapes the pay
Nigerian company, remote roleNairaLocal salary scales, company size
Outsourcing or staffing agency serving foreign clientsDollars or nairaAgency margin, client's budget, hours
Foreign company with an Africa or EMEA teamDollars, pounds or eurosCountry band, seniority, qualification
Freelance clients (small businesses abroad)Dollars, pounds or eurosYour rate, niche, client reviews

Nigerian companies hiring remotely pay naira salaries close to local office pay. They are often the easiest first step, and your ICAN or ACCA status counts directly. The Rocketship ad above is an example.

Agencies and outsourcing firms place Nigeria-based bookkeepers and accountants with small businesses in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. The client pays the agency, and the agency pays you a share. The pay is often in dollars but is usually well below what the client would pay a local hire.

Foreign companies with Africa, EMEA or global finance teams usually pay the most for salaried roles, but they are also the most competitive. One example we found is the Regional Accountant (Africa Entities and Cross-Border Operations) role at Odyssey, posted on the Unreasonable Group job board. It covered US to Nigeria cross-border transactions and asked for five to seven years of experience, IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) and local GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), and a CA or CPA "or equivalent". Experience with Zoho Books or an ERP was preferred. It published no salary and was closed when we checked in October 2026. We mention it to show what these employers ask for, not as a vacancy.

Freelance clients pay by the hour, by the month or by the task, for example a fixed monthly fee for keeping a small business's Xero books. Your income depends on how many clients you hold and the rate you can justify. If you're choosing between freelance and salaried work, our guide to contractor versus employee arrangements explains how each is paid and protected.

What drives a remote accountant's pay

Two accountants with the same years of experience can be offered very different pay. These are the factors that usually explain the gap.

Professional qualification

Being fully qualified changes which jobs you can apply for. ICAN (the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria) membership is well understood by Nigerian employers and some African ones. ACCA is widely recognised in the UK, Ireland, the Middle East and many multinational finance teams, so it travels further for UK and EMEA roles. A US CPA licence matters most for US-facing roles and is the qualification behind many of the higher BLS figures.

A part-qualified accountant can still get remote work, mostly bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, and reconciliation. Fully qualified accountants get access to month-end close ownership, financial reporting and controller-track roles. Our guide to accounting certifications for remote jobs compares the options, costs and study time.

Which accounting standards and tax rules you know

An employer pays for the rules you can apply without supervision. IFRS experience is useful for UK, European and many African employers. US GAAP experience is what US companies want, and it is rarer among Nigerian candidates, so it can lift your offer. Knowledge of a specific country's VAT or sales tax, or of intercompany and cross-border accounting (like the Odyssey role above), is a premium skill. Few applicants have it.

Software and systems

Small foreign businesses mostly run QuickBooks Online or Xero. Growing companies move to NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Zoho Books, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or SAP. Being able to say "I have closed the month in NetSuite" puts you in a better-paid group than "I know Excel". Strong spreadsheet skills (pivot tables, lookups, clean reconciliations) are still expected everywhere. Canonical's ad lists them as a core requirement.

Seniority and scope

The BLS spread shows how much scope matters. US accountants in the lowest 10% earn under $56,020, and those in the top 10% earn over $144,090. The same pattern applies remotely. Processing invoices pays the least. Owning the full close for one entity pays more, and running consolidation, audits and a team pays the most. When you compare jobs, compare what you will be responsible for, not the job title.

The employer's pay policy

This is the biggest single factor and the one you control least. A company with location-based bands will pay a Nigeria-based accountant much less than its UK or US staff, however good you are. A company paying one global band may not hire into Nigeria at all. Read the location line in every ad. "Remote, EMEA" and "Remote, worldwide" are different from "Remote, UK" or "Remote, US". The last two usually need the right to work in that country.

Contract type

The same work costs an employer different amounts depending on the contract. As an employee through an employer of record (EOR), you may get paid leave and other benefits, but the company also pays the EOR's fees. As a contractor, your invoice might look higher, but you cover your own leave, equipment, pension and tax. Our contractor versus employee guide covers this in detail.

Time zone and hours

Accounting has deadlines: month-end, quarter-end, payroll runs and audits. UK hours are easy from Lagos: as of late October 2026 London is on GMT, one hour behind Lagos, and in summer the two share the same time. US East Coast roles are harder. From 1 November 2026, New York is six hours behind Lagos, so a 9am to 5pm New York day runs from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. Being willing to cover US hours around close can make you a stronger candidate. It also means late nights, so price that into what you accept.

Bookkeeper, accountant or specialist: how the job title affects pay

The job title on an ad tells you roughly which pay band to expect.

RoleTypical remote workUS benchmark (BLS, May 2025)
Bookkeeper / accounting clerkData entry, reconciliations, AP/AR$50,670 median
AccountantMonth-end close, reporting, accruals$83,680 median
Senior accountant / controller trackConsolidation, audit, team leadAbove the median; top 10% over $144,090

These figures are US benchmarks for all work arrangements. They are not offers for Nigeria-based workers. We have separate pay guides for the narrower roles: remote bookkeeper salaries, accounts payable specialist pay and accounts receivable specialist pay. If you're starting out, our guide to remote bookkeeping jobs for beginners shows the most realistic entry route.

How to work out what a remote accounting offer is really worth

Gross pay in dollars is not what reaches your naira account. Before accepting, work it through.

  1. Confirm the basis. Is the figure a month, a year or an hour? Gross or net? Salary or contractor fee?
  2. Check how you'll be paid. A payroll platform such as Deel or Remote, a bank transfer to a domiciliary account, or a payment app such as Payoneer, Grey or Wise. Each has its own fees and exchange spread. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options.
  3. Allow for tax. Income earned while you live in Nigeria is generally taxable in Nigeria. See our guide to tax for remote workers in Nigeria for how the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 applies.
  4. Price your running costs. Backup power (inverter, solar or generator fuel), two internet connections and any software you pay for yourself.
  5. Value the benefits. Paid leave, a learning budget that covers ACCA or CPA exams, health cover and equipment allowances are worth real money.
  6. Account for the hours. A US-hours job that keeps you up until 11pm costs more than a UK-hours job at the same pay.

Example (hypothetical): Tolu, a part-qualified ACCA accountant in Ibadan, is offered a contractor role doing bookkeeping and month-end support for a small UK firm at $1,500 a month. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is about ₦2,043,000 a month before anything comes off. From that she needs to subtract the payment platform's withdrawal and conversion costs, set money aside for tax, and pay for diesel or solar running costs and two data plans. There is no paid leave, so two weeks off means two weeks without pay. A second offer of $1,300 a month as an EOR employee, with paid leave and a learning budget, could be worth more in practice. The figures are invented to show the method, not to suggest a market rate.

How to research pay for a specific remote accounting job

There's no reliable national figure, so research each job instead.

  • Read the ad's location and pay lines first. Some ads publish a band for each country. If the band shown is for the US only, it doesn't apply to you.
  • Ask early, politely. "Could you share the salary range for candidates based in Nigeria?" is a normal question to ask a recruiter before the second interview.
  • Use BLS figures as context, not an anchor. Quoting $83,680 to a company hiring in EMEA usually signals that you don't understand its pay structure.
  • Compare like with like. Compare an offer with similar roles at companies hiring in Africa or EMEA, not with Lagos office salaries or US medians.
  • Treat self-reported and aggregator figures carefully. Salary pages built from a handful of submissions, or with no stated method, can be very wrong, as Plane's $40 percentile shows.
  • Check the employer is real. An "accountant" job that asks you to receive money into your own account and forward it is a money-mule scheme, not a job. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.

Our guide to researching salary ranges before applying covers this step by step, and negotiating a dollar salary covers what to say once you have an offer.

Mistakes that keep remote accountants underpaid

  • Applying only to "Remote, US" ads. Most need US work authorisation. Filter for worldwide, EMEA or Africa instead.
  • Describing yourself by title, not by what you can do. "Accountant, 4 years" says less than "Closed monthly books for three entities in Xero, cut close from 10 days to 6".
  • Ignoring US GAAP or another country's tax rules. A short, targeted course in the rules your target market uses is often worth more than a general certificate.
  • Accepting naira pay quoted as "remote". Naira pay is fine if you choose it, but know the difference before comparing offers.
  • Agreeing to a dollar figure without pricing fees, tax and hours. Run the calculation in the previous section first.
  • Staying in data entry too long. Volume work at low rates rarely becomes better-paid work on its own. Ask for close, reconciliation and reporting tasks early.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a remote accountant earn in Nigeria?

There is no reliable published average. Pay ranges from naira salaries similar to local office pay, such as one Nigeria-remote Lead Accountant ad at ₦200,000 to ₦300,000 a month, to dollar salaries from foreign companies that set pay by country. Plane, an HR and payroll platform, gives a median of $8,872 a year for remote accountants in Nigeria, but doesn't publish its method.

Do remote accountants get paid in dollars?

Some do. Foreign employers, agencies and freelance clients often pay in dollars, pounds or euros, while Nigerian companies hiring remotely usually pay in naira. Always check the currency in the offer letter or contract, and how the money will reach you.

Can a Nigerian accountant earn a US salary working remotely?

Rarely. Most companies hiring internationally use location-based pay, and well-paid US roles that need a CPA licence or US work authorisation are usually closed to people living in Nigeria. A Nigeria-based accountant's best realistic route to higher pay is a foreign company with an Africa, EMEA or global finance team, plus US GAAP or IFRS skills.

Is ACCA or ICAN better for remote accounting jobs?

Both help, in different markets. ICAN is best understood by Nigerian and some African employers. ACCA is more widely recognised by UK, Irish, Middle Eastern and multinational employers. Choose based on where your target employers are, and check our certifications guide for costs.

How much do remote bookkeepers earn compared with accountants?

Less, generally. In the US, the BLS median for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks was $50,670 in May 2025, against $83,680 for accountants and auditors. Remote employers outside the US follow the same pattern at lower absolute levels.

Do I need experience to get a well-paid remote accounting job?

Usually, yes. Better-paid remote accounting roles generally ask for several years of experience: the Africa-wide regional accountant role we reviewed asked for five to seven. Beginners usually start with bookkeeping or accounts payable work and move up as they take on month-end close and reporting.

Why do remote accounting job ads often not show a salary?

Many international employers set pay by country and don't publish every country's band. Ask the recruiter for the range that applies to candidates based in Nigeria before you invest heavily in the process.

Key takeaways

  • The BLS median for US accountants and auditors was $83,680 a year in May 2025. It's a benchmark, not what a Nigeria-based accountant will be offered.
  • Most international employers pay by location, and few publish pay for Nigeria-based accounting roles, so research each offer individually.
  • Pay rises with full qualification (ICAN, ACCA, CPA), US GAAP or IFRS experience, ERP software such as NetSuite, and ownership of month-end close and reporting.
  • "Remote" doesn't always mean dollars. Nigerian employers hiring remotely usually pay in naira.
  • Turn any dollar offer into naira after payment fees, tax, power and internet costs, and the hours you'll keep, before you compare offers.
