Remote Tax Preparation Jobs: Career Opportunities for Nigerians
Which remote tax preparation jobs Nigerians can get, how the PTIN works for foreign preparers, EA and CITN routes, published pay bands and seasonal hours.

You can do remote tax preparation work from Nigeria, but the path is narrower than the job boards suggest. The realistic options are offshore and expat tax firms that prepare US returns, Nigerian firms hiring remote tax officers for VAT, PAYE and withholding tax work, and bookkeeping roles with a tax component. US gig platforms that want a US licence and a US address are usually not open to you.
Most "remote tax preparer" ads you'll find on Google are for US residents. They want people who already live in a particular state, hold a US credential and can work the US filing season on US hours. That doesn't mean the door is shut. It means you have to know which doors are actually open.
This guide covers the kinds of tax work Nigerians get hired for remotely, the US credentials (PTIN and enrolled agent) that do and don't apply to you, what published pay bands look like, the seasonal calendar and how to build a route in.
Quick answer
Remote tax preparation jobs open to Nigerians fall into three groups: US expat and offshore tax firms that hire international staff to prepare US returns, Nigerian accounting firms that hire remote tax officers, and bookkeeping roles that include tax filings. Expect to need an accounting degree or ICAN/ACCA progress, real return-preparation experience and, for US work, a PTIN. Always confirm on the live ad that applicants in Nigeria are accepted.
What remote tax preparation work actually involves
Tax preparation means gathering a client's financial records, working out what they owe or are owed, filling in the right forms and getting the return filed on time. Remote versions of the job split by country and by client type.
US individual and expat returns
US individual returns (Form 1040 and its schedules) make up the largest pool of remote tax work. One niche matters a lot for Nigerians: expat tax, which means preparing returns for American citizens who live abroad. Those clients usually need forms such as 2555 (the foreign earned income exclusion) and 1116 (the foreign tax credit). Because the clients are scattered across the world, the firms serving them are often fully remote and hire internationally.
US business and sales tax compliance
Some firms handle business returns or US sales tax filings for e-commerce sellers. This work is high-volume and process-driven, so it often goes to offshore teams.
Nigerian tax compliance
Nigerian businesses also need tax work done, and some firms now hire for it remotely. A remote Tax Officer ad from Maroriem Consults, a Nigeria-based firm serving SMEs (posted 20 August 2026, now closed), described typical duties. The role covered preparing and filing VAT, PAYE and withholding tax (WHT) returns, helping with annual company income tax (CIT) filings, reconciling monthly liabilities, checking PAYE and pension remittances, and working with auditors (Maroriem Consults ad on HotNigerianJobs). This work is paid in naira, but it is genuine remote tax work and a common first step.
UK and other markets
UK Self Assessment and VAT work exists too. Most UK tax roles open to offshore staff go through outsourcing agencies that recruit in particular countries. The pattern shows up in the ads covered below.
Which remote tax jobs Nigerians can realistically get
The table below sums up where Nigerian applicants stand as of October 2026. It is our assessment based on the ads and official pages cited in this article, not a survey.
| Type of role | Who hires | Realistic from Nigeria? |
|---|---|---|
| Expat tax associate (US returns) | Fully remote expat tax firms | Yes, if the ad allows your country |
| Offshore US tax specialist | Outsourcing firms and offshore centres | Often limited to named countries |
| US tax gig platforms | US marketplaces for CPAs and EAs | Rarely; usually want US credentials |
| Remote tax officer (Nigerian tax) | Nigerian accounting and consulting firms | Yes, paid in naira |
| Bookkeeper with tax filings | Small foreign firms and agencies | Yes, a common entry route |
| International tax analyst or manager | Global payroll and fintech companies | Senior roles, often regional (EMEA) |
Offshore roles often name one country
Many offshore tax jobs aren't "worldwide". They're built around one hiring country. As of October 2026, TaxValet, a US sales tax firm, lists a US Sales Tax Accountant and a US Tax Compliance Specialist (a "future openings" talent pool) as 100% remote, but the location for both is the Philippines (TaxValet careers on Greenhouse). An applicant in Lagos should treat that as a no, however attractive the role looks.
This is the most common reason Nigerians get silently rejected for tax roles. Read the location line before the job description. Our guide on how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents explains how to read these restrictions.
Expat tax firms are the best-known open door
Expat tax firms serve Americans living all over the world, so many of them already run distributed teams. Bright!Tax is one example. Its careers page describes a team "distributed across continents" and invites staff to work from wherever suits them, but it doesn't say which countries it hires from (Bright!Tax careers). Check the live ad for each opening before you assume Nigeria is eligible.
Do you need a PTIN, EA or CPA to prepare US tax returns from Nigeria?
For paid US federal return preparation you need a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) from the IRS, and you can get one as a non-US resident. The EA and CPA credentials are not required to be hired as an associate, but they lift your pay and your options.
PTIN: the basic requirement
The IRS says anyone paid to prepare, or help prepare, all or substantially all of a federal tax return must have a valid PTIN. The application or renewal fee is $18.75 (about ₦25,500 at ₦1,362 to $1, CBN rate of 23 October 2026), and a PTIN must be renewed every year (IRS PTIN requirements).
Several points in the IRS FAQ matter for Nigerians (IRS FAQ: Do I need a PTIN?):
- If a firm hires you to prepare returns, you need your own PTIN even when a senior reviews and signs the return.
- Clerical staff who only enter data or assemble documents, without giving advice or making tax determinations, generally don't need one.
- Foreign persons who can't get a US Social Security number can register for a PTIN without one. They submit two notarised copies of identity and foreign-status documents (such as a passport or national ID card), notarised by a notary in their own country. Processing takes about six weeks.
The supplemental form for this route is Form 8946, the PTIN application for foreign persons without a Social Security number (IRS: About Form 8946). Many employers walk new associates through this, so ask before you pay a notary.
Enrolled agent: the credential worth aiming for
An enrolled agent (EA) can represent taxpayers before the IRS on any tax matter. The IRS calls it the highest credential it awards. EAs must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years (IRS enrolled agent information).
According to the IRS, the route has four steps: get a PTIN, pass all three parts of the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE) within three years, apply for enrollment on Form 23, then pass a suitability check covering tax compliance and criminal background. PSI Services has run the exam since 1 March 2026, replacing Prometric (IRS: Become an enrolled agent).
That IRS page doesn't list the exam fee or test-centre locations. Check the current fee and whether you can sit the SEE from Nigeria with PSI before you plan around it.
CPA
A US CPA licence is issued by individual states, and each state sets its own education, exam and experience rules. It's a long and expensive route for a Nigeria-based candidate. Look into it only if you're aiming at senior US tax roles. Our guide to accounting certifications for remote jobs compares it with ACCA and ICAN.
Nigerian qualifications that help: ICAN, ANAN, CITN and ACCA
For Nigerian tax work, local credentials carry real weight. Even for US tax jobs, foreign firms read them as proof that you understand accounting.
The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) offers direct membership, without its exams, to accredited ICAN or ANAN members who have at least one year of post-membership tax experience. It also admits staff from core tax departments of state revenue boards and the federal tax authority who passed the final Inspector of Taxes exam, and holders of its Tax Academy's Executive Advanced Diploma (CITN: Join CITN). Anyone else takes CITN's professional exams. Check the current syllabus and fees on CITN's portal.
The Maroriem Consults ad listed ICAN, ACCA, ANAN or CITN as an advantage rather than a requirement, alongside a relevant degree and two to four years' experience. That's a fair picture of what Nigerian employers ask for in remote tax roles.
For foreign employers, ACCA tends to be the best-recognised Nigerian-accessible qualification because it is international. A US-focused firm will still care more about whether you've prepared US returns.
How much remote tax preparation jobs pay
Pay depends on whose taxes you're preparing, your credentials and whether the role is full-time or seasonal. Few employers publish pay for roles open to Africa, so treat any figure as a single data point, not a market rate.
One published band: a Bright!Tax "Remote Expat Tax Associate" ad on Built In advertised a base salary of $25,000 to $45,000 a year, depending on tenure, credentials and KPIs, plus semi-annual bonuses. It asked for at least one year of hands-on US tax preparation experience and an accounting degree. The listing was tagged to Buenos Aires and was removed on 6 January 2026, so it is an example of pay at this type of firm. It is not a current vacancy, and it doesn't show that the firm hires from Nigeria (Bright!Tax ad on Built In).
| Figure | Annual (USD) | Monthly (USD) | Monthly (naira, approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottom of band | $25,000 | about $2,083 | about ₦2.8 million |
| Top of band | $45,000 | $3,750 | about ₦5.1 million |
Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). They are gross base pay before any fees or tax. Bonuses are not included.
Three points help you read pay in this field:
- US local pay is a different market. Pay advertised to US-based preparers isn't what a Nigeria-based associate will be offered. Offshore and international roles usually pay less than US local rates.
- Naira roles are much lower. Remote Nigerian tax officer roles pay in naira at local market rates, and the Maroriem ad didn't publish pay.
- Credentials move the band. EA status and experience with complex forms (foreign corporations, trusts, foreign tax credits) are what move associates to senior pay.

Seasonality and time zones: the US calendar on WAT
US individual tax work peaks in the spring filing season, from roughly late January to mid-April. A second rush comes before the autumn deadline for extended returns. Some firms hire seasonal contractors only for those months, while expat firms and firms handling business returns tend to keep staff all year. Read each ad to see whether it's seasonal, a fixed-term contract or permanent.
Time zones mostly work in your favour. The US filing season falls in northern winter, when US Eastern time is 6 hours behind Lagos (from 1 November 2026 until US clocks change in March) and US Pacific is 9 hours behind. Much return preparation is "heads-down" work, so you can do it in your morning and afternoon. A 2pm to 10pm WAT shift gives you overlap with US East Coast mornings for client calls and reviewer feedback.
During busy season, expect long weeks. Make sure your power and internet backup (an inverter or solar, plus two internet sources) can carry them.
Skills and tools employers look for
Tax firms hire for accuracy first. A mistake on a return costs the client money and costs the firm its reputation.
- Technical tax knowledge: US individual tax basics (filing status, income types, deductions, credits). For expat work add the foreign earned income exclusion, the foreign tax credit and foreign bank account reporting. For Nigerian work, the duties in the Maroriem ad cover it: VAT, PAYE, WHT, CIT and pension remittances.
- Professional tax software: Firms use their own packages, such as Drake, UltraTax, Lacerte or ProConnect for US returns. You'll usually learn the firm's choice on the job, but naming one you've used helps.
- Excel: Reconciliations, lookups and pivot tables come up constantly.
- Written English: You'll write notes explaining your assumptions and email questions to clients and reviewers.
- Data security habits: Returns carry Social Security numbers and bank details. Employers expect a private workspace, a locked-down laptop, two-factor authentication and no use of public Wi-Fi.

How to get into remote tax preparation from Nigeria
This route assumes you have an accounting background or are studying for one. If you're starting from zero, begin with bookkeeping (see remote bookkeeping jobs for beginners).
- Get local tax experience first. Nigerian VAT, PAYE and WHT filings, done in an accounting firm or a company finance team, give you the reconciliation and compliance habits foreign firms want. Remote tax officer roles at Nigerian firms are a good bridge.
- Learn US individual tax properly. Work through IRS publications and the forms themselves. Prepare practice returns for invented clients (a W-2 employee, a freelancer with Schedule C, an American abroad) and keep them as work samples. Never use real people's data.
- Get a PTIN once you have an offer, or when a firm asks. It's cheap, but the foreign-person route needs notarised documents and about six weeks. Some firms want it before your start date.
- Target the right employers. Search for "expat tax associate", "US tax associate remote" and "international tax preparer". Filter out ads tied to the US, the Philippines, India or South Africa. Check each company's own careers page and our guide on finding remote jobs that accept Nigerian applicants.
- Shape your CV for tax. Lead with return types and volumes ("prepared monthly VAT and WHT returns for 14 SME clients") and the software you've used, not a generic accounting summary.
- Plan the EA exam after your first season. Once you've prepared US returns for real, the SEE is far easier to pass, and the credential is what moves you into senior and reviewer roles.
Nigeria-specific practicalities
Contractor or employee
Most foreign tax firms hire Nigerians as independent contractors, and a few employ through an employer of record. The difference affects leave, notice and who handles your tax. It's covered in contractor vs employee for Nigerian remote workers.
Getting paid
Dollar pay usually arrives through a payroll platform, a USD account provider or a domiciliary account. Compare the options and fees in our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria.
Your own tax
Preparing other people's taxes doesn't excuse your own. Foreign income earned by a Nigerian resident falls under Nigerian tax rules. See tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
Equipment and workspace
Tax firms often install monitoring or security software, require a VPN and ask for a dedicated, quiet workspace. A second monitor makes return preparation much faster.
Scams that target would-be tax preparers
Tax work attracts its own scams because it involves money and identity documents. Walk away from any of these:
- Pay-to-start offers: An "employer" asks you to pay for tax software, a training certificate or an "EFIN registration" before you can start. Legitimate firms provide their software.
- Refund-routing requests: Someone asks you to receive tax refunds or client money into your personal account and forward it. That is money laundering, and you carry the risk.
- Data harvesting: You're asked for your BVN, NIN, bank logins or a full scan of your passport before any interview or written offer. A PTIN does need identity documents, but those go to the IRS through the official process, not to a WhatsApp recruiter.
- Unrealistic pay for no experience: No serious firm pays senior US tax rates to someone who has never prepared a return.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Nigerian legally prepare US tax returns remotely?
Yes. A foreign person can get a PTIN from the IRS without a Social Security number and be paid to prepare US federal returns. You still need an employer or client willing to hire from Nigeria. Many US firms limit roles to US residents for their own business reasons.
Do I need to be a CPA or enrolled agent to get a remote tax job?
No, not for associate roles. Firms commonly hire associates with an accounting degree and some tax preparation experience, and senior staff review their returns. The EA or CPA becomes important for senior, reviewer and representation roles, and for US gig platforms that only accept licensed professionals.
How much does a PTIN cost and how long does it take from Nigeria?
The IRS fee is $18.75 (about ₦25,500 at the CBN rate of 23 October 2026), renewable every year. Foreign applicants without a Social Security number submit two notarised copies of identity documents, and the IRS says processing takes about six weeks. Check the current fee on the IRS site before you apply.
Are remote tax preparation jobs seasonal?
Many are. US individual tax work peaks from about late January to mid-April, and some firms hire contractors only for that window. Expat tax firms, business-return firms and Nigerian compliance roles (monthly VAT, PAYE and WHT) tend to offer year-round work.
Can I do remote tax work without an accounting degree?
It's harder but possible at the entry level. Bookkeeping or data-entry roles in tax firms are the usual way in, because clerical staff who don't make tax determinations generally don't need a PTIN. Most tax associate ads ask for an accounting or related degree.
Is CITN membership useful for foreign remote tax jobs?
It helps your credibility and is valued for Nigerian tax roles, but foreign firms preparing US returns care more about your US tax experience. ICAN or ANAN members with a year of post-membership tax experience can apply for CITN direct membership without the exams. ACCA is usually better recognised internationally.
Which software should I learn for remote tax preparation?
Strong Excel skills come first. Beyond that, the firm's own package matters most, and most firms train new associates on it. Familiarity with a professional US package such as Drake, UltraTax, Lacerte or ProConnect, or with Nigerian accounting software for local compliance, is a plus on your CV.
Key takeaways
- Remote tax preparation work open to Nigerians mainly comes from US expat and offshore tax firms, Nigerian firms hiring remote tax officers, and bookkeeping roles with tax filings.
- Many offshore tax ads are limited to named countries such as the Philippines, so check the location line before applying.
- Paid US return preparation requires a PTIN, which foreign persons can get without a Social Security number using notarised identity documents.
- The enrolled agent credential is optional for associates but lifts pay and seniority. The SEE has three parts and has been run by PSI since March 2026.
- One published expat tax associate band was $25,000 to $45,000 a year base, but treat it as a single example, not a market rate.
- Local experience with VAT, PAYE and WHT plus ICAN, ANAN, CITN or ACCA progress gives you a credible starting point.
