Yes, a Nigerian finance professional can earn dollars from a remote job. Bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, staff accounting, financial analysis and payroll are the roles that most often reach applicants in Nigeria, and they usually pay well below US salaries. The harder part is spotting which "remote" finance ads actually accept someone living in Lagos, Enugu or Kano, and which quietly limit applicants to Europe, the US or one time zone.

In this guide we cover the finance roles that pay in dollars and the sourced pay figures for Nigeria-based workers. We also show how to read the location rules in real finance ads (all checked as of October 2026) and where to find remote finance jobs with international companies. Then come the qualifications and tools employers ask for, the time-zone reality of month-end close, and the finance-specific scams to watch for. Throughout, the aim is to help you apply only where you have a real chance.

Quick answer

Remote finance jobs that pay in dollars do exist for people in Nigeria. They are mostly bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, staff or senior accountant, FP&A analyst and payroll roles, usually offered as contracts or through an employer of record. One payroll platform puts the median base pay for a remote finance analyst in Nigeria at $31,190 a year. Apply only to ads that list Nigeria, Africa or worldwide eligibility, and confirm the pay currency before you interview.

Which remote finance jobs pay in dollars

Most dollar-paying finance work for Nigerians sits in transactional accounting and analysis. Roles that sign off statutory accounts for a US or UK entity are a different matter: they often need a local licence (such as a US CPA licence) or residence, so they are much harder to land from Nigeria.

RoleWhat you doHow open to Nigeria
BookkeeperRecord transactions, reconcile bank accounts in QuickBooks Online or XeroFairly open, often contract
AP / AR specialistProcess invoices, chase payments, run payment batchesOpen, often EMEA or worldwide
Staff / senior accountantMonth-end close, journals, reconciliations, ERP workMixed, often region-limited
FP&A / financial analystBudgets, forecasts, variance analysis, modelsMixed, more common at startups
Payroll specialistRun payroll, reconcile payroll accountsOften tied to one country's rules
AML / KYC analystCheck customers, review transactionsOpen at fintechs, needs compliance training
Fractional controller / CFOPart-time finance leadership for small firmsOpen to senior people, contract
Finance AI trainerReview AI outputs on accounting tasksOften worldwide, contract

The role pages go deeper on each: see our guides on how to become a remote bookkeeper from Nigeria, a remote financial analyst and a remote payroll specialist. For a ranked look at accounting roles specifically, read best remote accounting jobs for Nigerians.

Why payroll and tax roles are harder

Payroll and tax work is built on one country's laws. The Senior Payroll Specialist (Netherlands) role on Oyster's job board, published in August 2026, asked for five years of Dutch payroll, Dutch at C1 or C2 level and current knowledge of Dutch wage tax, as shown on Oyster's public job board feed. A Nigerian accountant can learn another country's rules, but expect these ads to favour people who have already run that payroll.

Where finance AI training fits

AI companies hire accountants to check and improve how models handle accounting questions. One example: micro1's Senior Accountant Expert listing on Himalayas, posted 24 September 2026, is a contractor role reviewing financial reports, audit procedures and tax compliance work. It asked for a degree in accounting or finance and a professional title such as CPA. The listing also contradicted itself on location: one line said "Remote (US Based)" while another said all countries were open. Ask before you invest time in the assessment. Our planned guide to legitimate AI training jobs covers this kind of work in more detail.

What remote finance jobs pay Nigeria-based workers

US salary data is a ceiling, not an offer. Companies hiring from Nigeria usually pay less than they pay US staff, because many set pay by location.

US benchmarks (what local US staff earn)

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $83,680 a year for accountants and auditors and $103,570 a year for financial analysts. Both figures are medians for workers in the US, May 2025. A Nigeria-based remote hire is very unlikely to be offered these figures, but they tell you the top of the range a US company is used to paying.

Figures for remote finance staff in Nigeria

Plane, a global HR and payroll platform, publishes pay estimates for remote finance analysts in Nigeria. As of October 2026, it gives a median base salary of $31,190 a year, a 10th percentile of $20,977 and a 90th percentile of $114,718. These are gross base pay, excluding benefits. The page doesn't state a date or explain its method, so treat the figures as one employer-side estimate, not a market average.

At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), here is what those figures come to before tax and transfer fees:

Plane estimate (remote finance analyst, Nigeria)Per month in dollarsPer month in naira
10th percentile, $20,977 a yearabout $1,750about ₦2.38 million
Median, $31,190 a yearabout $2,600about ₦3.54 million

Bookkeeping and AP roles usually pay less than analyst roles. Senior accountants, controllers and FP&A managers pay more. For role-by-role figures, see the remote bookkeeper salary guide and the accounts payable specialist salary guide. Our planned page on how much remote accountants earn covers accountants specifically.

Compare that with "remote" finance jobs paid in naira

Not every remote finance ad pays in dollars. A Lead Accountant role at ITH Trading Partner Ltd on SmartRecruiters offered ₦200,000 to ₦300,000 a month, about $147 to $220 at the house rate. It asked for a CPA, ACCA or ACA qualification, IFRS expertise and three years in international corporate finance. A job aggregator had tagged it "Nigeria – Remote", but the ad itself described a hybrid role in Lekki, Lagos (checked October 2026). Always read the employer's own ad, not just the aggregator's label.

Example (hypothetical): working out a monthly offer

Example (hypothetical): Amaka, an ACCA-qualified accountant in Ibadan, is offered $24,000 a year as a contractor by a UK startup. That is $2,000 a month, about ₦2.72 million at the house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026). Before she accepts, she should deduct the fees on her payment app, any conversion spread, tax under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and the cost of her inverter and backup internet. She should also find out whether paid leave exists, since contractors usually get none. Our guides on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria and tax for Nigerian remote workers cover fees and tax in detail.

Five kinds of "remote" finance ad, and which you can apply for

The single biggest waste of time for Nigerian finance applicants is applying to ads they were never eligible for. Real finance ads fall into five patterns.

Ad typeWhat it saysCan you apply from Nigeria?
Country-restricted"Remote, US" or "UK only"Usually no
Region with country list"EMEA" plus named countries or a UTC bandOnly if Nigeria is listed
Nigeria only, foreign company"Remote, Nigeria only"Yes, but check the currency
Worldwide contract"Anywhere" or "all countries"Usually yes
In-country hire via EOR firm"Country Finance Manager, Nigeria"Yes, local role

Region ads: read the country list, not just the time zone

Oyster's Accounts Payable Analyst ad, published 8 October 2026, was remote and full-time. It listed Spain, Romania, Hungary, Portugal, Poland and South Africa as locations and required candidates to be "based within +3/-3 UTC", according to Oyster's job board feed. Lagos is UTC+1, so the time zone fits, but Nigeria was not on the country list. Employers that hire through set entities usually mean the list literally. In a case like this, message the recruiter and ask before applying. Our planned explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job ad goes further.

Nigeria-only roles at foreign companies

Clickatell, a chat commerce company headquartered in Redwood City, California, listed a remote Accounting Administrator role on Himalayas, posted 24 October 2026 and open to applicants in Nigeria only. It asked for about three years in a similar finance role, advanced Excel and some weekend and public-holiday work to run reconciliations. Microsoft Dynamics NAV experience was listed as an advantage. No salary or currency was stated. A foreign company hiring for a Nigeria-only role may well pay in naira through a local entity, so ask early.

In-country roles at employer-of-record companies

Employer-of-record (EOR) firms such as Deel employ people in many countries, so they need finance staff in those countries. Deel advertised a remote Country Finance Manager, Nigeria role, shown on General Catalyst's job board, which was closed when we checked in October 2026. It required an ACCA, CPA or local equivalent qualification and at least five years as an accountant in tech companies. The work covered VAT, company income tax and social security filings. This kind of role is worth watching for because Nigerian tax and payroll knowledge is the main requirement, not a disadvantage.

Hiring rules and listings change weekly. Treat every company named here as an example of a pattern, not a promise that it is hiring Nigerians today, and check the live ad.

How to find remote finance jobs with international companies

The quickest route is to go where finance ads state location rules clearly, then check each ad on the employer's own careers page.

  • Remote job boards that state eligibility. Every listing on WorkRemote's remote accounting jobs shows the company, its website and where applicants may live. WorkRemote reviews listings and aims to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but can't check every detail, and employers decide who they hire.
  • Careers pages of companies that hire globally. EOR and global payroll firms (Deel, Oyster, Remote), fintechs with African operations and remote-first software companies all employ finance staff. Read the location line on each ad, not the company's general "we're remote" message.
  • Applicant tracking system (ATS) searches. Many company ads sit on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or SmartRecruiters. Searching Google for site:jobs.ashbyhq.com accountant EMEA or site:job-boards.greenhouse.io finance Africa remote turns up ads that aggregators miss.
  • Aggregators, used with care. Sites that collect "Nigeria" or "worldwide" finance ads are useful for leads, but their labels can be wrong, as the ITH Trading Partner example above shows.
  • Freelance and fractional work. Small US, UK and Canadian businesses hire bookkeepers and fractional controllers on contract. This is often the easiest first dollar client for a Nigerian accountant.

Our planned guide to finding remote jobs on company career pages explains the careers-page method step by step.

Search terms that work for finance

Employers use different titles for similar work. Search for several:

  • "accounts payable analyst", "AP specialist", "finance operations associate"
  • "staff accountant", "general ledger accountant", "senior accountant EMEA"
  • "FP&A analyst", "finance business partner", "financial analyst"
  • "bookkeeper QuickBooks remote", "Xero bookkeeper"
  • "KYC analyst", "AML analyst", "transaction monitoring"

Add "Africa", "EMEA", "worldwide" or "Nigeria" to the search and drop any result that names only countries you can't work from.

Qualifications and tools international employers ask for

A professional qualification matters more in finance than in most remote fields, because it lets a foreign employer trust work they can't supervise.

Certificates that travel

  • ACCA is the qualification Nigerian applicants can most easily use abroad. The ads we checked named ACCA directly (Deel, ITH Trading Partner).
  • ICAN is respected in Nigeria. Abroad, it often falls under "or local equivalent". Mention which body issued it and that it is IFRS-based, because a foreign recruiter may not know it.
  • CPA, CMA and CIA come up in US-facing ads. The micro1 listing preferred CPA, CMA or CIA "or equivalent experience".
  • CIMA suits FP&A and management accounting roles.

Software that shows up in ads

ToolWhere it appears
QuickBooks Online, XeroBookkeeping for small US, UK and Australian firms
NetSuiteStartup and scale-up accounting, AP, payroll
Microsoft DynamicsMid-sized firms (Clickatell listed Dynamics NAV)
Advanced Excel or Google SheetsAlmost every ad, especially AP and FP&A
SAP, OracleLarge companies and consulting

Free trials and vendor training let you practise QuickBooks or Xero before you apply. Put the specific tools you've used on your CV, not "accounting software".

US GAAP vs IFRS

Nigerian accountants train on IFRS. US companies report under US GAAP, and many UK small businesses use UK GAAP (FRS 102). You don't need to master another framework before applying for bookkeeping or AP roles. For senior accountant and controller roles at US firms, though, being able to talk through common US GAAP differences in an interview helps.

How to apply: a practical sequence

  1. Pick one lane. Choose bookkeeping, AP/AR, general ledger, FP&A or compliance. A CV that tries to cover all five reads as unfocused.
  2. Rewrite your CV for an international reader. Use reverse-chronological order, two pages at most, with no photo, date of birth or state of origin. Translate Nigerian context: "reconciled 14 bank accounts monthly for a ₦3 billion turnover distributor (about $2.2 million)".
  3. Show tools and numbers. Name the ERP, the size of the ledger, how many days the close took and what you cut it to.
  4. Filter ads by eligibility first. Read the location line, the country list and any UTC band before reading the duties.
  5. Tailor the first lines. Recruiters spend seconds on a CV. The top third should match the ad's title and its two or three main tools.
  6. Prepare for a test. Expect an Excel task, a reconciliation, journal entries or a short model. Practise under time pressure.
  7. Ask about pay and arrangement early. Ask about currency, gross or net, contractor or EOR employee, payment schedule and leave. Our guide to contractor vs employee arrangements explains what each means for you.

Working hours: month-end close across time zones

Finance work has fixed deadlines. Month-end close, payroll cut-offs and payment runs don't move for your time zone.

  • UK employers: 9am to 5pm in London is 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter (GMT, from 25 October 2026) and the same hours in summer (BST).
  • European employers: Central European Time matches Lagos in winter and is one hour ahead in summer.
  • US East Coast employers: 9am to 5pm in New York is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos from 1 November 2026 (EST) and 2pm to 10pm in summer (EDT). Many US roles only need a few overlap hours, but close week can run late.

Power and internet matter more during close week than any other time. A payment batch that fails because NEPA took light is hard to explain. Run an inverter or solar backup, keep two internet options (for example, a fibre or 4G router plus a phone hotspot on a different network) and save work to the cloud.

Finance-specific scams to avoid

Finance job scams look different from the usual "pay for training" trick. Watch for these patterns:

  • "Payment processing agent" or "financial assistant" roles that ask you to receive money into your own bank or domiciliary account and forward it. This is money laundering (you become a "money mule"), and it can lead to your BVN being flagged and your accounts frozen.
  • Requests for your bank login, BVN or card details before a signed contract, presented as "setting up payroll".
  • Cheques or "equipment funds" sent to you with instructions to pay a vendor and keep the rest.
  • Charges for accounting software licences or "certification" before you start.
  • Pay far above the Plane range for a junior bookkeeping role, with no interview.

A real employer pays you through payroll, an EOR or a contractor platform. It never moves its money through your personal account. More warning signs are in our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian accountant work remotely for a US company?

Yes, when the ad accepts applicants in Nigeria or worldwide. Many US finance ads are restricted to people already authorised to work in the US, so check the location line first. Nigerians are usually hired as contractors or through an employer of record, and roles that need a US CPA licence for sign-off are rarely open.

Is ICAN recognised by international employers?

Often yes, under wording such as "ACCA, CPA or local equivalent", which the Deel Nigeria finance ad used. Recognition depends on the employer. Explain on your CV that ICAN is Nigeria's chartered accountancy body and that your training is IFRS-based. Many Nigerian accountants also take ACCA because recruiters abroad recognise it more readily.

How much do remote finance jobs pay Nigerians in dollars?

It varies widely by role and seniority. Plane estimates a median base salary of $31,190 a year (about $2,600 a month) for a remote finance analyst in Nigeria, with a 10th percentile of $20,977 (as of October 2026). Bookkeeping usually pays less, and senior accounting and FP&A roles pay more.

Can I get a remote finance job with no experience?

It is hard but possible at the bottom of the ladder. Most ads we checked asked for at least three years' experience. Bookkeeping contracts for small businesses and AP or data roles are the usual entry points. See our planned guide to remote bookkeeping jobs for beginners.

Do remote finance jobs with international companies pay in dollars or naira?

It depends on how they hire you. Contractor roles and worldwide roles usually pay in dollars or another foreign currency. Nigeria-only roles at foreign companies may pay in naira through a local entity. The employer's ad or offer letter is the only reliable answer, so ask before the final interview.

What does "EMEA" mean in a remote finance job?

EMEA stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Many EMEA finance ads also name specific countries or a time-zone band. Nigeria (UTC+1) may fall inside the band but still be missing from the country list. Apply only when Nigeria or "anywhere in EMEA" is clearly stated, or after a recruiter confirms it.

Which software should I learn for remote accounting jobs?

Start with QuickBooks Online or Xero for bookkeeping, plus advanced Excel or Google Sheets for everything. Add NetSuite if you want startup or scale-up roles. Large-company and consulting roles often use SAP or Oracle.

Key takeaways

  • Dollar-paying remote finance work for Nigerians is mainly bookkeeping, AP/AR, general ledger accounting, FP&A, AML/KYC and payroll roles, usually as contractor or EOR arrangements.
  • US medians ($83,680 for accountants, $103,570 for financial analysts, May 2025) are a ceiling. Plane's median for remote finance analysts in Nigeria is $31,190 a year.
  • Read the location line, country list and UTC band before anything else. An "EMEA" or "remote" label alone doesn't mean Nigeria is accepted.
  • ACCA, ICAN with a clear explanation, and named tools (QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, Excel) carry a finance application.
  • Confirm the currency and arrangement before interviewing, and walk away from any job that routes money through your personal account.
