Business team working office

Remote audit jobs do exist for experienced auditors in Nigeria, but they are concentrated in a few places. The main ones are internal and systems audit at fintechs and other tech-led companies, offshore audit work for US and UK accounting firms, and senior controls or assurance roles that are mostly analysis and reporting rather than site visits. Many attractive ads say "remote" but only hire from one country. If you read the location line carefully, you avoid wasting weeks on applications that were never open to you.

This guide is for audit seniors, supervisors and managers with ICAN, ACCA, CIA or CISA, or working towards them. It covers:

  • which audit work actually goes remote
  • live examples we checked in October 2026
  • the credentials each route expects
  • honest pay benchmarks
  • the time-zone and confidentiality issues that come with auditing a foreign client from Lagos, Abuja or Enugu

Quick answer

Experienced auditors in Nigeria can find remote work in three main areas:

  • internal, IT and product audit at fintechs and digital businesses
  • offshore external audit support for US or UK firms (US GAAP, Single Audit, SOX testing)
  • contract assurance projects

Expect to need three or more years of audit experience and ACA, ACCA, CPA, CIA or CISA. Many offshore audit ads restrict applicants to specific countries, so check where applicants may live before applying.

Which audit jobs can be done remotely

Remote audit roles are mostly roles where the evidence is digital: ledgers, system logs, transaction data, scanned documents and video walkthroughs. Roles built around stock counts, branch visits or factory inspections are harder to do remotely, and many of those ads say "remote" while also expecting regular travel.

Audit workHow remote it isWhat it usually needs
Offshore external audit supportOften fully remoteACA/ACCA/CPA, US GAAP, audit software
Internal audit at fintechsOften remote within one countryIIA Standards, COSO, data skills
IT and systems auditOften fully remoteCISA, access and change-control testing
Product audit (payments, apps)Remote with SQL accessSQL, payment flows, controls
SOX and controls testingRemote, often contractWalkthroughs, testing, documentation
Branch or operational auditPartly remote at bestTravel, on-site sampling

Offshore external audit

Some audit firms in the US and UK send part of their engagement work to offshore teams. That work includes tests of detail, workpaper preparation, financial statement drafting and compliance audits. One example we opened in October 2026 is SAPRO's Experienced Auditor contract for US government and compliance audits. It asks for:

  • Single Audit and Yellow Book (GAGAS, the US Government Auditing Standards) experience
  • US GAAP knowledge
  • CCH software
  • at least four hours a day overlapping with the client firm

That role is open only to people in South Africa. It still shows what this market expects: a full qualification (ACA, ACCA or CPA), four or more years of public practice for a senior, and six or more for a manager.

Internal, IT and product audit

Internal audit tests a company's own controls, so it does not have to go through an external firm. Fintechs and digital banks hire auditors who can query data themselves. For an internal audit career from the start, see our guide to becoming a remote internal auditor. IT audit has its own planned guide on remote IT auditor jobs.

"Auditor" jobs that are not financial audit

Search "remote auditor" and you will see ads for content auditors, utility bill auditors, coding quality auditors and "AI task auditors". A remote auditor search on Remote Rocketship for Africa, opened in October 2026, mixed PwC and SAPRO audit roles with AI-training gigs paying $70 to $100 an hour, which were tied to coding skills such as Kubernetes or GPU programming. Those gigs are not audit jobs and will not use your audit experience. Make sure you are only filtering for financial, internal or IT audit.

Who hires experienced auditors remotely from Nigeria

No list of "companies that hire Nigerian auditors" stays accurate for long. Eligibility changes with every ad. So treat the examples below as patterns you will see, and always check the live ad.

Nigerian and pan-African fintechs (remote within Nigeria)

As of October 2026, Moniepoint's careers board listed a Product Auditor role marked "Remote, Lagos, Nigeria". On the same board, its Head, IT Audit role was listed as Lagos on-site. So even one employer can have both remote and office-based audit roles.

The Product Auditor ad asks for:

  • three to five or more years in product audit, systems audit, financial data analytics or payment operations
  • CISA, CIA or CFE preferred, with ACA or ACCA acceptable if you also have strong technical and data skills
  • advanced SQL
  • knowledge of CBN rules, PCI DSS and NDPR

The ad did not show a salary or say what currency it pays in.

This route usually means a Nigerian employment contract paid in naira, not dollars. Its strengths are seniority, a clear internal audit track and work that matches the skills foreign employers later ask for.

Offshore audit delivery firms (often country-restricted)

Offshore delivery firms usually hire in countries where the professional body and exams are recognised by their clients. SAPRO's ad above is restricted to South Africa and requires the South African ITC/Board 1 exam. An Audit Director role listed through VirtuHire on Workable, posted on 12 January 2026, is also marked "South Africa (Remote)", even though the work covers audit programmes "focused on EMEA". The lesson is that the region the work covers is not the region you may apply from.

Nigeria-based auditors do sometimes find similar firms that hire across Africa or worldwide. You find them by reading location lines, not by assuming. Our planned guide on remote jobs with companies that hire across Africa explains how to search for them.

Consultancies, contract networks and direct clients

Experienced auditors also win contract work for SOX testing, internal audit co-sourcing, grant and donor audits, and readiness reviews for standards such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001. Contract work is usually done as an independent contractor, invoicing in dollars or pounds. Read contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you before you sign, because it changes your leave, benefits and tax.

How to read the location line on an audit ad

Audit ads have more location traps than most, because firms worry about licensing, data residency and client confidentiality. Before applying, check these phrases:

Phrase on the adWhat it usually means for a Nigeria-based applicant
"Remote, Nigeria" or "Remote, Lagos"Open to you; may still ask for occasional office days
"Remote, South Africa" or another single countryNot open unless you live there
"EMEA"Sometimes includes Nigeria, often means a European entity; ask
"US-based" or "must be authorised to work in the US"Not open from Nigeria
"Anywhere" or "worldwide"Usually open; check the time-zone and contract terms
"Remote with up to 50% travel"Remote on paper, field audit in practice

Our planned guides on what EMEA means in a remote job ad and how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents go into more detail.

Qualifications that matter for remote audit roles

Remote employers can't watch you work, so they rely more heavily on credentials as proof of competence. Which credential matters depends on the route:

  • ICAN (ACA): a full professional qualification. The Moniepoint and SAPRO ads both list ACA among acceptable qualifications, but foreign clients may know it less well than ACCA.
  • ACCA: widely recognised by UK and Commonwealth firms, and accepted alongside ACA and CPA in the SAPRO and VirtuHire ads above.
  • US CPA: a US state licence. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes it as requiring a national exam and state licensing. It helps for US engagements, but signing audit opinions as a CPA requires a US state licence, so offshore auditors usually prepare work that a US partner reviews and signs.
  • CIA (Certified Internal Auditor): issued by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). It is the standard credential for internal audit.
  • CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor): issued by ISACA. It is the standard credential for IT and systems audit.
  • CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner): listed as preferred on the Moniepoint product audit ad. We did not check its fees.

What the CIA and CISA cost (as of October 2026)

CredentialFees (USD)Approx. naira
CIA, three parts plus application, non-member$1,515about ₦2.06 million
CIA, three parts plus application, IIA member$990about ₦1.35 million
CISA exam, non-member$760about ₦1.04 million
CISA exam, ISACA member$575about ₦783,000

These figures come from the IIA's CIA certification page and ISACA's CISA exam page. Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and are rounded. Membership fees and study materials cost extra, and prices change, so check both pages before paying.

Experience requirements matter too. The IIA asks for two years of qualifying experience with a bachelor's degree, or one year with a master's. That experience can come from external audit, compliance, risk management or internal control work. CPAs, chartered accountants (CAs) and active CISA holders may be able to take the CIA Challenge Exam, a single-exam route, instead of the three parts. If you already hold ACA or ACCA, check whether you qualify.

The CISA exam can be taken at a PSI test centre or remotely proctored, according to ISACA. That helps if you would otherwise travel to sit it. For a fuller comparison of credentials, see our planned guide to accounting certifications for remote jobs.

Skills that get experienced auditors shortlisted

Years of experience alone rarely win remote roles. The ads we opened point to a specific mix of skills.

Technical standards

  • Know the standards the client works under. For US work that means US GAAP, PCAOB or AICPA standards, Single Audit (Uniform Guidance) and Yellow Book. For UK work it means ISAs (UK) and FRS 102.
  • For internal audit, know IIA Standards and the COSO internal control framework.
  • For Nigerian fintech roles, know the CBN rules, PCI DSS and the Nigeria Data Protection Act and its regulations.

Data and tools

  • SQL is no longer optional for product and systems audit. The Moniepoint ad asks for advanced SQL to check fee, commission and VAT calculations and to reconcile wallet balances to the general ledger.
  • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets, plus audit software the client uses (CCH, CaseWare or similar). SAPRO calls CCH "essential".
  • AI tools are now named in some ads. Moniepoint lists Claude or other AI tools. Be ready to explain how you use them while keeping client data confidential.

Remote working habits

Audit managers reviewing work from another country care about:

  • clear workpapers
  • written queries that need no follow-up call
  • review notes cleared quickly
  • turning up to the overlap hours every day

What remote auditors earn

Remote audit pay for Nigeria-based professionals varies a lot. We could not find a credible published range for it. Here is what we can say from sources we opened.

BenchmarkFigureWhat it is
US accountants and auditors, median$83,680 a yearBLS, May 2025, US-based workers
Same, in nairaabout ₦114 million a yearConverted at ₦1,362 to $1, 23 October 2026
Offshore and Nigerian ads openedNot listedSAPRO and Moniepoint did not publish pay

The BLS median is a US local benchmark, not an offer you should expect from Lagos. Offshore audit firms exist partly because they cost US firms less than local hires. A Nigeria-based auditor working for a foreign client will usually earn well below US local pay, though often well above typical Nigerian audit pay. What moves your rate:

  • your qualification
  • whether you can run an engagement or only prepare workpapers
  • your US GAAP or Single Audit experience
  • your data skills
  • whether you are an employee or a contractor carrying your own costs

For more on role pay, see our planned guide on how much remote accountants earn. Before accepting a dollar offer, work out what reaches your account after fees using how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Contractor income has tax consequences, explained in tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

Working as a remote auditor from Nigeria

Time zones and busy season

US audit clients set the hours. If a firm asks for four hours of overlap with US Eastern time, that means 9am to 1pm in New York. In Lagos that is 3pm to 7pm in winter (EST, from 1 November 2026) and 2pm to 6pm in summer (EDT). Many US calendar-year audits are finished in the first months of the year, so expect long evenings in Nigeria during that period.

UK work is easier on your hours. Lagos is one hour ahead of London in winter and on the same time in summer.

Confidentiality and data security

You will handle client ledgers, payroll and bank records. Expect firms to require:

  • a company laptop or a locked-down virtual desktop
  • multi-factor authentication
  • a private workspace where nobody can see your screen

Never download client files to a shared family computer or a phone you lend out. Firms may also ask for background checks, and you may need to share your NIN or passport details through the firm's official HR system. Share those only after you have checked the employer is real.

Power and internet

Missing a walkthrough call with a client's controller looks bad on an engagement. Have backup power (an inverter or solar battery) and two ways online, such as your main ISP plus a MiFi or phone hotspot. Some auditors in Nigeria use Starlink. Check the current price before buying.

How to apply for remote audit roles

  1. Pick one route. Offshore external audit, fintech internal audit and IT audit need different CVs. Write a separate CV for each.
  2. Lead with engagement facts. Give industries, entity sizes, frameworks (IFRS, US GAAP), the audit software you used, team size and your role (senior, in-charge, manager). "Led 12 Single Audits under Uniform Guidance" beats "performed audits".
  3. Show data work. Mention a query you wrote, an analytic that cut sampling or an automated reconciliation. Leave out confidential details.
  4. Read eligibility first. Apply only where the location line includes Nigeria, Africa, EMEA with Nigeria confirmed, or worldwide.
  5. Prepare for a technical interview. Ads like SAPRO's set your level after a technical interview. Practise explaining materiality, risk assessment, going concern, controls testing and how you would handle a disagreement with a client.
  6. Check the contract. Confirm whether you are an employee or a contractor, the currency, the payment date, who owns the equipment and what the overlap hours are.

Example (hypothetical): Chiamaka is an ACCA audit senior with five years at a mid-tier Lagos firm. She drops the generic CV and builds two versions. One is for US offshore work, listing her two US GAAP group reporting engagements and the CaseWare files she prepared. The other is for fintech internal audit, highlighting the SQL she taught herself while testing a bank client's loan data. She applies only to ads open to Nigeria and practises explaining Single Audit concepts aloud before interviews.

For interview preparation, see our internal auditor interview questions.

Common mistakes and red flags

  • Applying to single-country ads. "Remote, South Africa" and "US-based" mean exactly that.
  • Taking "remote" at face value. Check the travel percentage and any on-site days.
  • Underselling your qualification. If you hold ACA, write it out as "Associate Chartered Accountant (ICAN)" so foreign recruiters recognise it.
  • Ignoring data skills. Applications without SQL or analytics evidence lose out for product and systems audit.
  • Paying to be placed. A real audit firm does not charge you for "processing", training or software before hiring. Read how to spot remote job scams if anything feels off.
  • Sharing client data on unsecured devices. It can end your contract and breach data protection law.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian chartered accountant work remotely for a US audit firm?

Yes, when the firm or its offshore partner hires from Nigeria. Many US firms use offshore teams for workpapers, testing and drafting, while a licensed US CPA partner signs the audit opinion. Check the location line on each ad, because many offshore audit roles are limited to specific countries.

Do I need a US CPA licence for remote audit jobs?

Usually not for offshore support roles. Ads such as SAPRO's accept ACA, ACCA or CPA. A CPA helps for US engagements and senior roles, but signing US audit opinions needs a US state licence, which offshore staff usually don't hold.

Is CIA or CISA better for remote audit work?

CISA is better if you want IT, systems or product audit. CIA is better for general internal audit and audit leadership. Fintech product audit ads often list both, along with CFE, so the choice depends on the roles you target.

How much do remote auditors in Nigeria earn?

There is no reliable published average for Nigeria-based remote auditors. The US BLS median for accountants and auditors was $83,680 a year in May 2025, but that is US local pay, and offshore roles usually pay well below it. Your qualification, US GAAP experience and seniority have the biggest effect.

Can I do remote internal audit for a Nigerian company?

Yes. Some Nigerian fintechs advertise internal and product audit roles as remote within Nigeria. As of October 2026, Moniepoint listed a Product Auditor role as "Remote, Lagos, Nigeria". These roles are usually Nigerian employment contracts, so ask about currency and occasional office days.

Are "AI task auditor" jobs real audit jobs?

No. They are AI-training gigs that review model outputs, often in coding or technical subjects. They can pay well but will not build your financial or internal audit career.

What hours will I work auditing US clients from Nigeria?

Usually afternoons and evenings in Lagos. Four hours of overlap with US Eastern time is 3pm to 7pm in Lagos from 1 November 2026, and 2pm to 6pm when the US is on summer time. Expect longer evenings during the US busy season early in the year.

Key takeaways

  • Remote audit work for experienced professionals in Nigeria is concentrated in fintech internal and product audit, offshore external audit support and IT audit.
  • The region an ad covers (such as EMEA) is not the same as where you may apply from. Read the location line on every ad.
  • Employers expect a full qualification (ACA, ACCA or CPA) and three to six or more years of experience. CIA and CISA strengthen internal and IT audit applications.
  • SQL and data analysis now separate shortlisted auditors from the rest, especially in product and systems audit.
  • US pay figures are benchmarks only. Nigeria-based remote auditors usually earn below US local pay, so compare offers on take-home pay after fees and tax.
