Supervisor checking accountant tasks

To find remote IT auditor jobs from Nigeria, search under several job titles at once, not just "IT auditor". Search the hiring pages of fintechs and compliance audit firms directly, and treat the location line on every ad as the first filter. The roles exist, but there are fewer of them than remote developer or support jobs. Many international IT audit ads are limited to one country or region, because audit work involves regulated data, client sites and sometimes travel.

This guide covers the different kinds of IT audit work you can do remotely and the job titles that hide them. It also explains how to read location restrictions, what employers asked for in the ads we checked in October 2026, what CISA and ISO 27001 Lead Auditor really require, and realistic ways in for accountants, internal auditors and IT staff in Nigeria. If you already hold CISA, you'll get a sharper search plan. If you don't, you'll learn which experience to build first.

Quick answer

Remote IT auditor jobs open to Nigerians do exist, mostly with Nigerian and African fintechs that hire remotely within Nigeria, and with some international compliance audit firms. Search for titles such as IT Auditor, Technology Risk, IT General Controls, SOC 2 Auditor, ISO 27001 Auditor and Product Auditor. Check that the ad accepts Nigeria-based applicants. Most mid-level ads ask for about three to five years of audit, control or security experience, and CISA is preferred or required.

What a remote IT auditor does

An IT auditor checks whether an organisation's technology controls work: who can access systems, how changes reach production, whether backups restore, whether data is protected, and whether the figures in financial reports come from systems that can be trusted. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes IT auditors as people who review controls over an organisation's IT systems so that financial and non-financial data come from a reliable source (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).

When you work remotely, most of the job happens through screen-shares, evidence requests, read-only system access, walkthrough calls and written reports. Some audits still need someone on site, which is why many ads mention travel.

The four kinds of IT audit job you'll see

The work splits into four groups. Knowing which group you fit tells you where to search.

TypeWho hiresTypical work
Internal IT auditBanks, fintechs, large companiesRisk-based audit plan, ITGC testing, reports to audit committee
External assuranceAudit and compliance firmsSOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI DSS audits of client companies
Product or systems auditPayments and fintech firmsTesting fees, ledgers, settlement and change controls with SQL
Contract or freelanceConsultancies, small firms, platformsGap assessments, readiness reviews, audit support

ITGC means IT general controls: the basic controls over access, change management, operations and backups that every IT audit tests. SOC 2 is a US attestation report on a service company's security controls. ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for an information security management system (ISMS).

Why remote IT audit jobs are harder to land than other tech roles

Be honest with yourself about this before you start. IT audit is less location-flexible than software development, and there are clear reasons for that.

  • Regulated data. Auditors see access logs, customer data and financial records. Some employers only allow that access from approved countries.
  • Travel and site work. A Senior IT Auditor ad from Hitachi Energy said the role "can be fulfilled completely remotely in Europe" but also expected about 30% global travel and asked for at least five years of IT audit experience (Hitachi Energy ad on The Muse, posted December 2025 and closed when we checked in October 2026). "Remote in Europe" means a Lagos-based applicant is not eligible.
  • Country-based audit firms. Large audit networks hire through member firms in each country. Their remote roles usually mean remote within that country.
  • Hybrid "remote" labels. One Senior IT Infrastructure Auditor ad on Remote4Africa (fintech employer not named) was hybrid, open to Nigeria only and set to WAT hours (Remote4Africa listing, closed when checked in October 2026). Ads like this suit Lagos residents better than someone in Jos.

None of this means you shouldn't apply. It means a Nigeria-based IT auditor should expect a smaller pool of roles and should cast a wider net with search terms than a developer would.

Where to find remote IT auditor jobs that accept Nigerians

Nigerian and African fintechs hiring remotely within Nigeria

For most Nigerians, the realistic first remote IT audit job is with a fintech or tech company that already employs people in Nigeria. The employer understands CBN rules and NDPR, pays through local payroll, and doesn't need to work out how to hire you abroad.

Example from a live ad: Moniepoint's Greenhouse board listed a Product Auditor role marked "Remote, Lagos, Nigeria" as of October 2026 (Moniepoint job board). The Product Auditor ad asks for three to five or more years in product audit, systems audit, financial data analytics or payment operations, advanced SQL, and knowledge of CBN guidelines, PCI DSS and NDPR. It prefers CISA, CIA or CFE and accepts ACA or ACCA holders who have strong technical and data skills. The same board had a Head, IT Audit role located in Lagos (Head, IT Audit ad) that requires CISA and 10 or more years of experience. That ad lists Lagos as the location but also mentions a "fully remote work culture", so ask the recruiter which applies before you assume either. Check the live ads: roles open and close often.

International compliance audit firms

Firms that run SOC 2 and ISO 27001 audits for software companies are the most remote-friendly international employers in this field, because their clients are cloud companies and the evidence is digital. Many of these firms hire only in the US, the UK or the EU, so open each firm's careers page and read the location line on every ad. Look for "EMEA", "Africa", "worldwide" or a named list of countries that includes Nigeria.

ATS job boards, searched directly

Most tech-company audit ads are posted on applicant tracking systems (ATS) such as Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workable. Search Google with strings like these:

  • site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "IT audit" remote
  • site:jobs.lever.co "technology risk" remote
  • site:jobs.ashbyhq.com "IT auditor"
  • site:apply.workable.com "ISO 27001" auditor remote

Results are often stale, so open each ad and check that it is still live. For a full method, read our upcoming guide on finding remote jobs on company career pages.

LinkedIn, job boards and WorkRemote

On LinkedIn, set the location to Nigeria, filter by Remote and search each title in the next table one at a time. Nigerian boards often list IT audit roles, but check the dates: several IT auditor listings we found in search results were from 2023 and 2024. On WorkRemote, the remote tech jobs category lists roles open to people living in Nigeria, and each listing shows where applicants may live.

Job titles to search (IT audit hides under many names)

If you only type "IT auditor", you'll miss about half the market. Run every search below.

Search this titleWhat it usually means
IT Auditor / IT Audit SeniorInternal or external ITGC and application audits
Information Systems AuditorOlder name for the same work, common in banks
Technology Risk / IT RiskControl testing plus risk assessment
ITGC / SOX IT AuditorUS financial-reporting controls testing
SOC 2 Auditor / AssociateAssurance work at compliance audit firms
ISO 27001 Auditor / Lead AuditorCertification audits of an ISMS
Product Auditor / Systems AuditorFintech product, ledger and settlement controls
Security Compliance AnalystAudit readiness on the company side

The last row is not an audit job in the strict sense, but it is often the easiest remote way in. People in those roles prepare companies for audits, then move across to assurance. Our upcoming guide to remote governance, risk and compliance jobs covers that path.

How to read the location line on an IT audit ad

The location line tells you more than the job description does. Read it before anything else.

Ad saysCan a Lagos-based applicant apply?
Remote, Nigeria / LagosYes, but check if hybrid days are expected
Remote, AfricaUsually yes; confirm Nigeria is included
Remote, EMEASometimes; many mean Europe or the UK only
Remote in Europe / EUUsually no, unless you have EU work rights
Remote, US / United StatesNo, it needs US work authorisation
Worldwide / AnywhereUsually yes, often as a contractor

EMEA means Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but many companies use it to mean "our European time zones". Our upcoming explainers on what EMEA means in a remote job ad and how to read "worldwide remote" from Nigeria explain the wording in detail. If an ad is unclear, ask the recruiter one direct question: "Can you hire someone living in Nigeria for this role, as an employee or a contractor?"

What employers asked for in the IT audit ads we checked

Across the ads we opened in October 2026, the same requirements kept coming up. Use this as your checklist.

  • Certification. CISA appeared in every ad we read, as required or preferred. CIA, CISM, CRISC, CISSP and CFE were listed as extras. One ad accepted ACA or ACCA with strong data skills.
  • Frameworks. ISO 27001, NIST, COBIT, SOC 2, COSO and IIA Standards. Nigerian roles add CBN guidelines, NDPR and PCI DSS. International roles add GDPR.
  • Technical depth. Cloud (AWS, Google Cloud), identity and access management, network and database security, APIs and application controls.
  • Data skills. SQL came up repeatedly, especially in fintech. Excel or Google Sheets at an advanced level is assumed.
  • Experience. About three to five years for mid-level roles and 10 or more for heads of IT audit.
  • Writing. Every ad asked for risk-rated reports that executives and audit committees can act on.

Certifications: what CISA and ISO 27001 Lead Auditor really require

CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor)

CISA is the credential IT audit hiring managers look for most. As of October 2026, ISACA lists the exam fee at $575 for members and $760 for non-members, plus a $50 application fee once you pass (ISACA CISA page). At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is roughly ₦783,000 or ₦1,035,000 for the exam, plus about ₦68,000 for the application. Training materials and ISACA membership cost extra.

The exam covers five domains: the IS audit process, IT governance and management, systems acquisition and development, operations and business resilience, and protection of information assets.

The experience rule matters more than the fee. ISACA requires at least five years of professional IS audit, control or security work, gained within the 10 years before you apply, and verified by your supervisor (ISACA: Get CISA certified). You can sit the exam before you have that experience, and you then have five years from passing to apply. ISACA also offers experience substitutions for some degrees and other audit work. Check the current waiver rules with ISACA directly, because third-party summaries of them don't agree.

For a job hunt, that means you can write "passed CISA exam, certification pending experience" on your CV early on. That line carries weight with recruiters.

ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Auditor

If you want certification audit work (auditing other companies' ISMS against ISO 27001), you need a Lead Auditor credential from a training body. PECB's course runs five days, with the exam on day five, and the course price includes the exam and certification fees (PECB ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Auditor). PECB awards different credential levels depending on experience:

PECB credentialExperience neededAudit hours
Provisional AuditorNoneNone
Auditor2 years, 1 in info security200
Lead Auditor5 years, 2 in info security300
Senior Lead Auditor10 years, 7 in info security1,000

Passing the exam without experience gives you the provisional credential. It shows you know the standard, but it won't stand in for audit hours. Our upcoming roundup of cybersecurity certifications for remote jobs compares the other options.

Realistic routes into remote IT audit from Nigeria

Very few people start their careers as remote IT auditors. Most move across from a nearby role. Pick the route closest to where you are now.

From financial audit or accounting (ICAN, ACCA, ACA)

You already know audit methodology, sampling and working papers. Ask to join ITGC testing on your current engagements, learn SQL, and sit CISA. Fintech product audit roles are the natural next step, since some accept ACA or ACCA holders with data skills. If you're still deciding between financial and IT audit, our internal auditor career guide sets out the wider path.

From IT support, systems administration or cybersecurity

You understand the systems auditors test. What you usually lack is audit method: risk-based planning, evidence standards and report writing. Read COBIT and the ISO 27001 Annex A controls, volunteer for your employer's next audit as the person who gathers evidence, and aim first for security compliance analyst roles. The compliance analyst career guide and the cybersecurity analyst career guide both cover the skills that overlap.

From a Nigerian bank or fintech's internal audit team

This is the strongest starting point. Bank internal audit gives you CBN regulatory exposure, PCI DSS work and real control testing. Two or three years there, plus CISA, makes you a credible applicant for remote fintech roles in Nigeria and then for international SOC 2 or ISO 27001 assurance firms.

  1. Pick your lane. Choose internal IT audit, external assurance or fintech product audit. Each one needs a different CV.
  2. Collect proof. List every control you have tested, every audit you have supported and every framework you have worked against.
  3. Book CISA. If you aren't certified yet, set an exam date. "Exam scheduled for March" reads better than "planning to take CISA".
  4. Build your search list. Save searches for all eight titles in the job-title table on LinkedIn and Google, and set up WorkRemote alerts.
  5. Filter by location first. Drop any ad that rules out Nigeria before you read the duties.
  6. Tailor each application. Copy the ad's frameworks into your CV only where you have real experience with them.
  7. Follow up once. Send a short message to the recruiter or hiring manager a week after applying.

Example (hypothetical): CV bullets that show IT audit evidence

Weak: "Responsible for IT audit activities and ensuring compliance."

Stronger:

  • Tested user access reviews for 14 applications across a payments platform, finding 23 orphaned accounts that were removed within 10 days.
  • Reviewed 60 production changes against the change-management policy using Jira and Git logs; two unapproved changes were reported to the audit committee.
  • Wrote SQL checks on settlement data that matched wallet sub-ledgers to the general ledger and flagged a recurring rounding error.

Each bullet names the control, the method, the volume and what happened next. Hiring managers screening remote candidates look for exactly that, because they can't watch you work.

For interview practice, our internal auditor interview questions cover the methodology questions that also come up in IT audit interviews.

Pay: what to expect, honestly

We couldn't find a reliable published source for remote IT auditor pay offered to Nigeria-based workers, so we won't invent one. Here is what we can say.

The US benchmark is the BLS median for accountants and auditors (a wider group that includes IT auditors): $83,680 a year in May 2025 (BLS). That works out to roughly ₦114 million a year at ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026). This is a US-located median, not an offer a Lagos-based auditor should expect. Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually well below US local pay.

Pay mostly depends on four things:

When an international ad publishes a salary range, ask whether it applies to your location before you count on it.

Nigeria-specific setup for remote audit work

Auditors handle confidential evidence, so your setup matters more than it would for many remote roles.

  • Private workspace. Walkthrough calls show client systems and data. A shared room or a café won't do.
  • Power backup. An inverter or solar system that lasts a full working day. Losing power during a client walkthrough looks bad.
  • Two internet connections. For example, a fibre or 4G router plus a MiFi or phone hotspot from a different network.
  • Time zones. Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. As of October 2026, Lagos is one hour ahead of London (GMT), level with Central Europe, and from 1 November 2026 six hours ahead of US Eastern time. EMEA roles fit Nigerian working hours well. US roles may mean afternoon and evening calls.
  • Passport. Some roles need occasional travel. Keep your passport valid, and remember that visa timelines from Nigeria can be long.
  • Getting paid and tax. If a foreign company pays you, read how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria and the tax guide for Nigerian remote workers.

Mistakes and red flags to avoid

  • Applying to US-only ads. "Remote, United States" means US work authorisation is needed. Applying anyway wastes your time.
  • Over-claiming frameworks. Listing SOC 2 or PCI DSS without having worked on them falls apart in the first technical interview.
  • Treating training providers as employers. Some sellers bundle "auditor certification plus guaranteed job placement". A genuine employer never charges you to be hired. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.
  • Ignoring dates. Many IT auditor listings on aggregators are months or years old. Always click through to the employer's own ad.
  • Skipping the hybrid detail. "Remote, Lagos" can still mean office days. Ask before you accept.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work as a remote IT auditor from Nigeria for a foreign company?

Yes, if the employer can hire people living in Nigeria and the role isn't limited to one country. Many international IT audit roles are limited to the US, UK or EU, so check the location line and ask the recruiter directly if it isn't clear.

Do I need CISA to get a remote IT audit job?

Not always, but it helps a lot. Every IT audit ad we checked in October 2026 listed CISA as required or preferred. Some accepted CIA, CFE, ACA or ACCA with strong technical skills. You can sit the CISA exam before you meet the five-year experience rule.

How much does the CISA exam cost in naira?

As of October 2026, the exam costs $575 for ISACA members and $760 for non-members, plus a $50 application fee. At ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026), that is about ₦783,000 or ₦1,035,000, plus about ₦68,000.

Can an ICAN or ACCA accountant become an IT auditor?

Yes, and it's one of the most common routes. Get involved in IT general controls testing, learn SQL and sit CISA. Some Nigerian fintechs accept ACA or ACCA holders for product or systems audit roles if they have strong data skills.

Are entry-level remote IT auditor jobs available?

They're rare. Most remote IT audit ads ask for three to five years of experience. Beginners usually start in an office-based audit firm, a bank's internal audit team or a remote security compliance analyst role, then move into remote audit work.

Is ISO 27001 Lead Auditor worth it for remote work?

It is if you want certification audit work for compliance firms. Without audit experience, PECB awards only a provisional credential, so pair the course with real audit hours.

What's the difference between IT audit and GRC?

IT auditors test controls independently and report on whether they work. GRC (governance, risk and compliance) staff design the controls, manage risk and prepare the company for audits. Many people move between the two.

Key takeaways

  • Remote IT auditor jobs open to Nigerians exist, but there are fewer than in development or support, and many international ads are country-restricted.
  • Search under at least eight titles, including Technology Risk, SOC 2 Auditor, ISO 27001 Auditor and Product Auditor.
  • Nigerian fintechs that hire remotely within Nigeria are the most realistic first step. International compliance audit firms come next.
  • CISA is the credential employers ask for most. You can pass the exam before meeting ISACA's five-year experience rule.
  • Accountants, bank internal auditors and IT or security staff can all move across if they build control-testing evidence and SQL skills.
  • Check the location line first, the date second, and never pay anyone to get hired.
