For most Nigerians starting out, the best cybersecurity certifications for remote jobs are CompTIA Security+ first, then one certification tied to the job you want: Microsoft SC-200 for security operations (SOC) work, OSCP for penetration testing, CISA for audit and compliance. CISSP comes much later, once you have five years of security experience. Cheaper starting points like ISC2's Certified in Cybersecurity and the Google Cybersecurity Certificate help you learn, but foreign employers rarely list them as requirements.

Exams cost real money in dollars. CISSP alone is $749 (about ₦1.02 million). So the order you take them in matters as much as the choice. Below we set out what each certification costs as of October 2026, what level it suits, which remote roles it supports, and the limits a certificate can't get you past. The biggest limit is location: no certificate makes you eligible for a US-only or Latin America-only job.

Quick answer

Start with CompTIA Security+ if you have some IT background. If you're brand new, start with ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity ($199) or the Google Cybersecurity Certificate. Then add one role-specific certification: SC-200 for SOC analyst roles, OSCP for penetration testing, CISA for IT audit. Save CISSP for when you have five years of experience. Before you apply, always check that the job ad accepts applicants living in Nigeria.

How we chose these certifications

We judged each certification on five things that matter to a Nigeria-based applicant chasing remote work:

  • Recognition by foreign employers. Does the name turn up in remote security job ads and in what hiring managers expect?
  • Cost in dollars, and what that means in naira. Prices come from each provider's own page, checked in October 2026.
  • Experience required. Some certifications have no entry requirement. CISSP needs years of paid work.
  • Fit to a specific remote role. A certification that maps to a job title (SOC analyst, penetration tester, IT auditor) is worth more than a general one.
  • Whether you can sit it from Nigeria. Most of these exams are booked through Pearson VUE or proctored online, so you don't need to travel abroad.

This is not a popularity ranking. It's a buying order. Plenty of good certifications (GIAC, ISACA's CISM, the cloud security specialties) are missing because they suit people already employed in security, and those people usually have a company paying for them.

The shortlist at a glance

Prices are exam fees in US dollars as of October 2026. Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), rounded.

Entry-level certifications: where beginners should start

ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC)

ISC2's Certified in Cybersecurity is a foundation certification from the same organisation that runs CISSP, and it states "No Work Experience Required". According to ISC2's exam pricing page, the CC exam costs $199 in the Africa region, which is priced in US dollars like the Americas. That's about ₦271,000 as of October 2026.

Take CC if you're coming from outside IT and want a cheap, recognised first step that shows you understand the vocabulary: access control, network security basics, incident response. Don't expect CC alone to get you hired. Employers treat it as proof of interest, not proof of ability.

Google Cybersecurity Certificate

The Google Cybersecurity Certificate on Coursera is a course series, not a single exam. Coursera puts it at about six months at roughly 7 to 10 hours a week. It covers Python, Linux, SQL, SIEM tools (Google's Chronicle and Splunk) and the Suricata intrusion detection system. In the US and Canada it costs $49 a month after a 7-day free trial (about ₦66,700 a month at the house rate). Coursera says prices may be lower in other countries and that financial aid is available.

Its real value is the hands-on practice. Coursera also says the certificate helps prepare you for Security+, and that graduates get a discount on the Security+ exam and training. If you can't afford Security+ yet, the Google certificate is a sensible bridge: you learn the material while you save for the exam.

CompTIA Security+

Security+ is the certification foreign employers most often treat as the baseline for junior security roles. It's vendor-neutral, which means it isn't tied to one company's products. According to CompTIA's Security+ V7 page, the current exam (SY0-701) has up to 90 questions, a mix of multiple choice and performance-based tasks, in 90 minutes. The pass mark is 750 on a 100 to 900 scale. CompTIA recommends Network+ plus two years in a security or systems administrator role, but that's a recommendation, not an entry requirement.

Timing matters right now. CompTIA's Security+ overview page says V8 is expected around 17 November 2026, while the English V7 exam retires on 11 June 2027 (as of October 2026). If you're already halfway through V7 study materials, you have until June 2027 to sit V7. If you're starting from zero now, it may make more sense to study for V8 once its exam objectives and books are published.

CompTIA's certification pages that we checked didn't show a voucher price, and third-party sites disagree. Check the price in CompTIA's official store before you budget. Plan for a mid-hundreds dollar fee, not a ₦100,000 one.

Certifications for SOC and security analyst roles

Security operations centre (SOC) analysts watch alerts, investigate suspicious activity and escalate incidents. It's the most common entry route into remote security work, and many SOC teams run in shifts, which can suit a Lagos time zone. Our cybersecurity analyst career guide covers the skills and path in more detail.

Microsoft SC-200 (Security Operations Analyst Associate)

SC-200 tests whether you can triage, respond to incidents and hunt threats using Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Defender XDR, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Purview and Defender for Cloud. Hunting is done with KQL (Kusto Query Language). The exam lasts 100 minutes, is proctored and is booked through Pearson VUE.

Two details make it good value from Nigeria:

  • Microsoft says the price depends on the country where the exam is proctored, so check the Nigeria price when you schedule rather than assuming the US figure.
  • Renewal is free. You pass an online assessment on Microsoft Learn every 12 months.

SC-200 is a strong second certification after Security+. Security+ shows you know the concepts. SC-200 shows you can work in the tools many companies already pay for. Microsoft also offers a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox on the same page.

CompTIA CySA+

CySA+ is CompTIA's analyst-level certification. It's the usual next step after Security+ for people who want to stay vendor-neutral. We didn't verify its current price or exam details for this article, so check CompTIA's site before you budget. If you have to choose between SC-200 and CySA+, look at the remote ads you want: if they mention Sentinel or Defender, pick SC-200.

Certifications for penetration testing

OffSec OSCP

OSCP is the certification penetration testing employers recognise most. It's hard on purpose. According to OffSec's PEN-200 page, the exam is a 24-hour proctored test. It covers three standalone machines and one Active Directory set that simulates a breach across three machines.

Prices as of October 2026:

OffSec optionWhat you getPrice
Course + Cert Bundle90 days of course and labs, 1 exam attempt$1,749 (about ₦2.38m)
Learn One1 year of one course and labs, 2 exam attempts$2,749 a year (about ₦3.74m)
OSCP+ exam onlyExam for people already trained$1,699 (about ₦2.31m)

There are no formal prerequisites, but OffSec recommends solid TCP/IP networking, Windows and Linux administration, and basic Bash or Python scripting. If you pass, the OSCP itself never expires, but the "OSCP+" designation expires after three years unless you recertify.

Be honest with yourself before spending ₦2.4 million. Remote penetration testing jobs open to Nigeria-based testers are fewer than SOC jobs, and many consultancies want testers in the client's own country for legal and contractual reasons. Do free practice labs first, and read our guide to remote penetration tester requirements before paying.

Certifications for audit, risk and compliance roles

Isaca cisa

CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor) is the standard credential for IT audit. It's useful for remote governance, risk and compliance (GRC) roles too. According to ISACA's CISA page, the exam costs $575 for ISACA members and $760 for non-members (about ₦783,000 and ₦1.04 million at the house rate), plus a $50 application processing fee once you pass. You must also show qualifying work experience before you can be certified. ISACA's support pages give the details.

CISA suits Nigerians coming from accounting, banking audit or the Big Four, where IT audit experience is common. GRC roles involve a lot of document review and control testing, which suits remote work well. Our compliance analyst career guide covers the adjacent path.

CISSP: the senior certification

CISSP is the certification hiring managers associate with security leads, architects and managers. ISC2 lists five years of required work experience across its eight domains, which run from security and risk management to software development security. The exam costs $749 in the Africa pricing region (about ₦1.02 million), and rescheduling costs $50. ISC2 also says the CISSP exam moves to a new outline from 15 April 2027 (as of October 2026).

Don't take CISSP as a beginner to "stand out". Without the experience you can't hold the full certification, and senior remote roles that ask for CISSP also expect a work history to match. Our remote security engineer guide covers what those roles involve.

Which certification for which remote role

Use the role you're aiming for to pick your order:

Target remote roleFirst certificationNext certification
Junior SOC analystSecurity+SC-200 or CySA+
Cloud security (Azure shops)Security+SC-200, then Azure role certs

If you come from IT support or systems administration, skip CC and go straight to Security+. Your experience counts for more than a foundation badge. Our guide to remote SOC analyst jobs explains what employers in that role screen for.

What a certification cannot do for a Nigeria-based applicant

A certification proves knowledge. It doesn't change where a job is open to. Many remote security jobs are restricted by country for legal, data or contractual reasons:

  • Country-only remote roles. "Remote, US" or "Remote, UK" usually means you must live there and already have the right to work there. When we opened Launchpad Technologies' Greenhouse job board in October 2026, every listing was marked "Latam". That's a fully remote company whose roles are still closed to Nigeria-based applicants. Restrictions like these are normal, and no certificate overrides them.
  • Government and defence roles. US government security work often needs citizenship and a security clearance. Security+ is popular in that market, which is why US-focused advice overrates its power for someone in Lagos.
  • Regional roles. Ads that say "EMEA" (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) or "worldwide" are the ones to target. Even then, some EMEA roles really mean "Europe only". Our guide to what EMEA means in a remote job description explains how to read them.

We couldn't confirm a live security job ad naming Nigeria as eligible while researching this article, so we haven't named employers. Search the live listings, and read the location line of every ad before you apply. Our list of remote cybersecurity jobs for Nigerians covers where to look.

Paying for and sitting exams from Nigeria

Paying in dollars

Exam vouchers are priced in dollars, and naira card limits on international payments can block a ₦1 million purchase. Practical options:

  • Pay with a dollar card from a domiciliary account or a fintech dollar account. Our guide to receiving and holding dollars in Nigeria compares the apps.
  • Buy a bundle with a retake where one exists. A failed attempt at full price hurts far more in naira.
  • Ask about employer sponsorship once you're hired. Many companies pay for certifications such as SC-200, CySA+ or CISSP for existing staff.

Sitting the exam

CompTIA, ISC2 and Microsoft exams run through Pearson VUE. ISC2 notes that from June 2026 its Pearson test centres may add security checks such as metal-detector wands. You can sit at a test centre or, where the provider allows it, take an online proctored exam at home. Use Pearson VUE's test centre search to check for a centre near you.

For an online proctored exam, a power cut or a dropped connection mid-exam can cost you the attempt. Run the exam on inverter or solar backup, keep a second internet source (a MiFi or a phone hotspot on a different network) ready, and test your webcam and room setup the day before. The 24-hour OSCP exam makes backup power even more important.

Budget example

Example (hypothetical): a Lagos-based IT support officer plans Security+ and SC-200 over 12 months. They use free Microsoft Learn modules and free practice labs, and pay for one month of Coursera practice. The large costs are the two exam fees, which they confirm on the CompTIA store and in the Pearson VUE checkout before saving towards them in a dollar account. They sit Security+ first, then SC-200, and start applying to EMEA-eligible SOC roles after Security+ rather than waiting for both.

Common mistakes when choosing a security certification

  • Collecting foundation badges. Three beginner certificates don't add up to one Security+.
  • Buying CEH or CISSP to look senior. If your CV shows six months of experience, a senior badge raises questions instead of answering them.
  • Studying for an exam version that is about to retire. Check the retirement date first. Security+ V7's English exam retires in June 2027.
  • Skipping hands-on proof. Employers interviewing remote candidates ask you to explain an investigation or walk through a lab. Pair every certification with documented practice; our guide to building a cybersecurity portfolio shows how.
  • Paying "agents" who promise exam passes or guaranteed jobs. Book exams only through the official provider or Pearson VUE. Treat anyone selling leaked questions or job placement as a scam risk; see our guide to spotting remote job scams.
  • Ignoring renewal costs. Many certifications need continuing education or fees to stay active. Microsoft's role-based renewals are free; check the others before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Which cybersecurity certification should I get first in Nigeria?

For most people, CompTIA Security+. It's the one foreign employers most often treat as the baseline for junior remote security roles. If you have no IT background, start with ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity ($199) or the Google Cybersecurity Certificate, then move to Security+.

Can I take CompTIA, ISC2 and Microsoft exams from Nigeria?

Yes. These exams are booked through Pearson VUE, either at a test centre or by online proctoring where the provider offers it. Check centre locations and online options when you book. For online exams, make sure you have backup power and a second internet connection.

How much does CISSP cost in naira?

The CISSP exam costs $749 in ISC2's Africa pricing region as of October 2026, which is about ₦1.02 million at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN rate, 23 October 2026). You also need five years of relevant work experience to hold the full certification.

Is Security+ enough to get a remote cybersecurity job?

Sometimes, but rarely on its own. Junior remote roles usually also want IT support, networking or systems experience, plus evidence of hands-on skills such as home labs or write-ups. Pair Security+ with a role-specific certification or portfolio work, and apply only to roles open to Nigeria.

Should I take Security+ V7 or wait for V8?

If you're well into V7 study, sit V7: the English exam is available until 11 June 2027. If you're starting now, consider V8. CompTIA expects it around 17 November 2026, but wait until official objectives and study materials are out before switching.

Is OSCP worth the cost for a Nigerian?

Only if you're committed to penetration testing and have strong Linux, Windows and networking skills. The course-and-exam bundle costs $1,749 (about ₦2.38 million), and remote testing roles open to Nigeria are fewer than SOC roles. Practise on free labs first.

Do cybersecurity certifications expire?

Many do. Microsoft role-based certifications like SC-200 renew every 12 months through a free online assessment. OffSec's OSCP+ designation expires after three years, though the base OSCP doesn't. ISC2 and ISACA certifications need continuing education. Check each provider's policy.

Key takeaways

  • Security+ is the usual first certification for remote security work; ISC2 CC and the Google certificate are cheaper on-ramps for complete beginners.
  • After Security+, pick by role: SC-200 for SOC work, OSCP for penetration testing, CISA for audit and GRC.
  • CISSP needs five years of experience and costs $749 (about ₦1.02 million); it's for senior roles, not beginners.
  • Security+ V8 is expected around 17 November 2026, and V7 (English) retires on 11 June 2027.
  • No certification makes you eligible for a country-restricted job. Target ads open to Nigeria, EMEA or worldwide.
  • Plan for dollar payments, retakes and backup power before you book an exam.

Next steps

Pick your target role, then the one certification that matches it, and start applying while you study rather than after.
