Yes, you can do systems administration remotely from Nigeria. Most remote sysadmin ads expect three to five years of hands-on work with Windows Server or Linux, plus scripting, cloud and identity tools. The servers sit in data centres or the cloud, so the work itself travels well. The hard part is the hiring: many remote sysadmin jobs are limited to one country because the person holds the keys to the whole company.

This guide covers what remote systems administrator jobs actually ask for, drawn from real ads we opened in October 2026. It explains the difference between the Windows and Linux paths and which certifications are worth your money. It also shows how to read the location line so you don't waste applications. If you come from IT support or helpdesk, there's a step-by-step route into remote infrastructure support. We also cover the Nigerian side: power, internet, being on call at 3am Lagos time, and getting paid.

Quick answer

Remote systems administrator jobs usually ask for Windows Server and Active Directory or Linux (Ubuntu, RHEL), virtualisation (Hyper-V, VMware), scripting (PowerShell, Bash or Python), cloud and Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, and clear written documentation. Senior ads often ask for five or more years. People based in Nigeria can get these jobs, but only where the ad accepts Nigeria, EMEA or worldwide applicants. Always check the location line first.

What a remote systems administrator does

A systems administrator keeps a company's servers, user accounts and core IT services running, secure and backed up. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the core duties as installing and maintaining networks, operating systems and servers, managing security and user access permissions, improving performance, fixing problems flagged by users or monitoring tools, and advising on hardware and software (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).

In a remote role, almost all of that happens through a screen. A typical week might include:

  • Creating and removing user accounts in Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID when staff join or leave
  • Patching Windows and Linux servers during agreed maintenance windows
  • Watching dashboards and alerts, then fixing whatever broke overnight
  • Managing backups (Veeam is common) and testing that restores actually work
  • Writing PowerShell or Bash scripts so repeated tasks run themselves
  • Documenting changes in Confluence or a ticketing system so the next person understands what you did

The work that can't be done remotely is physical: swapping a failed disk, cabling a rack, handing a new starter a laptop. Companies with their own server rooms either keep someone on site or pay a local contractor for that part. This is one reason fully remote sysadmin jobs lean towards cloud-heavy and SaaS-heavy companies.

Infrastructure support, IT admin and sysadmin: same family, different labels

Ads use several titles for overlapping work. Knowing them widens your search.

Title in the adWhat it usually means
IT Admin / IT AdministratorUser accounts, devices, SaaS tools, some servers
Systems AdministratorServers, identity, backups, patching
Infrastructure Support EngineerSysadmin work plus networks and escalations
Windows AdministratorWindows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy
Linux AdministratorLinux servers, shell, packages, services
Site Reliability / Platform EngineerCloud, automation and code; the next step up

If you search only "systems administrator", you'll miss many matching roles. Save searches for at least three of these titles.

Skills employers ask for in remote sysadmin ads

We opened several current and recent remote sysadmin ads in October 2026 to see what they actually ask for. Two examples:

  • Social Discovery Group, Senior System Administrator (IT Infrastructure). The ad asks for at least five years running Microsoft and VDI infrastructure. It also wants Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, AD CS (PKI) and Group Policy, Windows Server and RDS, Linux (Ubuntu, AlmaLinux, RHEL), nginx and HAProxy, Hyper-V and VMware ESXi, and PowerShell. Bash, Python, Terraform and Ansible count as advantages (job ad on Breezy, checked October 2026).
  • Prime System Solutions, Senior Systems Administrator. This ad wants five years or more, preferably at an MSP (managed service provider). It also wants Windows Server, Active Directory and Group Policy, VMware and Hyper-V, Microsoft 365, Azure and Intune, firewalls and endpoint security, and experience with compliance frameworks such as NIST, HIPAA or SOC 2 (listing on Remote Rocketship, checked October 2026).

These two are senior roles, but the same skills show up at every level. Here they are grouped, with ways to prove each one.

Remote-specific skills that decide who gets hired

Technical skill gets you shortlisted. Remote habits decide whether a foreign team trusts you with admin rights.

  • Written change notes. Write what you changed, why, when, and how to roll it back. Teams spread across time zones depend on these notes.
  • Calm incident updates. Post short, timed messages in Slack or Teams while something is down, even before you know the cause.
  • Working alone. Many remote admins are the only infrastructure person awake in their time zone.
  • Security discipline. Use MFA everywhere, keep personal and admin accounts separate, and never share credentials over chat.

Windows administrator or Linux administrator: which path?

Both paths lead to remote work. Which one suits you depends on where you're starting and the kind of companies you want to work for.

Remote Windows administrator jobs: a short career guide

Windows administration is the most direct route for Nigerians already working in corporate IT. Banks, telecoms and large companies here run Active Directory and Microsoft 365, so you may already touch these tools at work.

A remote Windows admin path usually looks like this:

  1. Helpdesk or IT support. Reset passwords, manage users in Active Directory, support Microsoft 365.
  2. Junior Windows or M365 admin. Group Policy, Intune device management, Exchange Online, patching with WSUS or Intune.
  3. Systems administrator. Windows Server, Hyper-V or VMware, backups, PKI, plus PowerShell for anything repetitive.
  4. Senior admin or cloud engineer. Azure infrastructure, identity design, migrations (the Social Discovery Group ad above specifically wanted an Active Directory domain or forest migration).

Remote Windows roles cluster at MSPs. An MSP is a company that runs IT for many small clients at once, and the work is ticket-driven, which suits remote staff. The trade-off is that many MSP clients are in regulated US sectors. That often leads to country restrictions on who can see client data. For Microsoft 365 work specifically, see remote Microsoft 365 administrator jobs.

The Linux route

Linux suits people who like the command line and want to move towards DevOps later. Linux admin roles in hosting and SaaS companies are more often open to applicants outside the US and UK, but competition for them is global. Our guide to getting a remote Linux administrator job covers the Linux path in depth.

Requirements: experience, degree and certifications

Experience

Experience matters more than anything else in sysadmin hiring. Both senior ads above asked for five years or more. Mid-level ads commonly ask for about three years. Pure entry-level remote sysadmin roles are rare, because nobody wants a stranger in another country practising on production servers.

The realistic entry point is a remote IT support or helpdesk role, or a local sysadmin job in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt, followed by a move to remote work. If you're at the very start, read our guide to remote IT support jobs for beginners first.

Degree

A degree helps but is rarely the deciding factor. BLS says employers typically want a bachelor's degree in computer or information science or a related field, though some accept a postsecondary certificate or associate degree (BLS). Some remote ads still list a bachelor's degree (the Social Discovery Group ad does). In practice, documented experience and certifications carry more weight for remote hires than the university on your certificate.

Certifications worth considering

CertificationWhat it showsNotes (as of October 2026)
Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)Azure identity, storage, compute, networking, monitoring100-minute proctored exam; price depends on country; renews every 12 months free online
CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006)Linux system management, security, scripting, troubleshootingCompTIA recommends about 12 months of hands-on Linux server experience
Red Hat Certified System Administrator (EX200)Hands-on RHEL administrationPerformance-based exam on RHEL 10; no internet access during the exam

Sources: Microsoft Learn AZ-104 page, CompTIA Linux+, Red Hat EX200.

None of these pages lists one fixed price. Microsoft says AZ-104 is priced by the country where the exam is proctored, so check the price shown for Nigeria at checkout before budgeting. Pick one certification that matches the path you chose (AZ-104 for Windows and Azure, RHCSA or Linux+ for Linux) rather than collecting three. For a wider comparison, see the best IT certifications for remote jobs.

Where remote sysadmin jobs are actually open to Nigerians

Systems administration is one of the harder remote jobs to land from Nigeria. That isn't because of skill. A sysadmin has privileged access to company data, and that brings data-protection rules, client contracts and sometimes security clearance requirements. Those rules often push employers to hire in specific countries.

The ads we opened in October 2026 show how this plays out:

  • An "anywhere" label that wasn't. Remote Rocketship showed the Social Discovery Group role as "Anywhere in the World" (aggregator listing). The employer's own ad lists remote work in Serbia, Georgia, Armenia, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan and requires fluent Russian. Aggregator labels can be wrong. Always open the original ad.
  • Remote, but one country. The Prime System Solutions role is "South Africa – Remote". An African location in the ad doesn't mean all of Africa.
  • EMEA wording. An IT Admin ad from Hostaway (listed on Working Nomads, now expired) said the candidate "must be in EMEA OR Brazil" (Working Nomads listing). Nigeria is in EMEA, so ads worded like this are worth applying to. Our EMEA explainer covers this wording in detail.
  • Global remote infrastructure roles do exist. As of October 2026, Sporty Group's careers board listed several infrastructure-adjacent roles marked "Global - Remote", including a Weekend Site Reliability Engineer (Sporty Group careers on Greenhouse). These aren't sysadmin titles, but they show where experienced admins can go next.

How to read a sysadmin ad's location line

Ad saysWhat it means for you
Worldwide / Anywhere / Global - RemoteApply, but confirm on the employer's own page
EMEA - RemoteUsually open to Nigeria; check for a country list
Europe - RemoteUsually needs EU or UK right to work
South Africa - Remote, Kenya - RemoteThat country only
US Remote, or security clearance requiredNot open to you from Nigeria

When an ad is unclear, ask the recruiter one direct question before you put time into the application: "Can you hire a contractor or employee based in Nigeria for this role?" Our guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents has more on this.

How much remote systems administrators earn

The best public benchmark is US data. BLS reports a median annual wage of $99,130 for network and computer systems administrators in May 2025 (BLS). That's about ₦135 million a year, or roughly ₦11.3 million a month, at the WorkRemote house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026).

Treat that as a ceiling for comparison, not an offer you should expect. It's the pay for US-based workers. Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually below US local pay. Many employers set pay by location, and contractors from Africa are often paid less than US staff in the same role. BLS also projects a 4% decline in US employment for this occupation from 2025 to 2035, with openings coming from people leaving the job rather than growth. Plain server admin work is being absorbed into cloud and automation roles.

What moves your pay up:

  • Cloud and automation skills. An admin who can work in Azure or AWS and write Terraform or Ansible is priced closer to a cloud engineer.
  • Seniority and migrations. Leading a migration or owning identity design is senior work.
  • Contract type. Contractor rates look higher but come without leave or pension. Our contractor vs employee guide explains the difference.
  • Who you work for. A foreign MSP serving small clients pays differently from a funded SaaS company.

Some ads hold the salary back until later in the process (the Social Discovery Group ad did). Ask for the range early in your first conversation.

How to get a remote infrastructure support job from Nigeria

Infrastructure support is the usual door into remote systems administration. You handle escalations from the helpdesk, keep servers and accounts healthy, and pick up projects. Here's a realistic sequence.

  1. Choose Windows or Linux. Most Nigerians already in corporate IT should start with Windows plus Microsoft 365. Developers and hosting people often suit Linux.
  2. Build a home lab. Use Hyper-V on Windows or a free hypervisor on an old PC. Build a small domain: two servers, a domain controller, a file server, Group Policy, a backup job and a restore test. For Linux, build a web server behind nginx, set up users, a firewall and scheduled backups.
  3. Script everything you did by hand. Put the PowerShell or Bash scripts on GitHub with a short README for each one.
  4. Write up three lab projects. One page each covering the problem, what you built, what broke, and how you fixed it. This is your portfolio.
  5. Take one certification. AZ-104 for the Windows and Azure path, RHCSA or Linux+ for Linux.
  6. Get real production experience. A local sysadmin job, an MSP role, or remote helpdesk work all count. Two years of production work plus a lab beats a lab alone.
  7. Apply where the location line allows Nigeria. Search by several titles (IT admin, infrastructure support, systems administrator, Windows administrator) and filter by EMEA or worldwide.

Example (hypothetical): turning lab work into CV bullets

Weak: "Familiar with Active Directory and PowerShell."

Stronger: "Built a two-server Active Directory lab with 15 Group Policy objects; wrote a PowerShell script that creates new-starter accounts, mailbox and group membership from a CSV, cutting setup from 20 minutes to under 2."

The stronger version names the tools, shows scale and gives a result. Label lab work as lab work. Interviewers will ask about it, and honesty about what was a lab protects you.

What the interview usually tests

Expect a mix of scenario questions and a practical task. Common ones: "A user can't log in, walk me through it", "How would you patch 50 servers without downtime?", "How do you test that backups work?" Remote employers also ask how you'd handle an outage when your manager is asleep. The IT support specialist interview questions are good practice for the earlier rounds.

Working as a remote sysadmin from Nigeria: the practical side

Time zones, maintenance windows and on-call

Sysadmins patch and change things when users are offline, which is often the middle of the night in the employer's time zone. For a US East Coast company, a 10pm maintenance window is 3am in Lagos in summer (EDT, 5 hours behind) and 4am in winter (EST, 6 hours behind, from 1 November 2026). UK work is easier: London 9am to 5pm is 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter (GMT) and the same hours in summer (BST). Before accepting, ask how often you'll be on call and whether night work is paid extra.

Being on WAT can also help you. An EMEA team may value an admin who's awake while European colleagues are online, and early-morning Lagos hours overlap with the end of the US night shift.

Power and internet are part of the job

When a production server is down, "NEPA took light" is not an answer. You need:

  • An inverter or solar setup that keeps your laptop and router running through a full outage, with a generator as a last resort
  • Two internet providers, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network, so one failure doesn't cut you off
  • A wired connection for long remote sessions where you can
  • A written plan for what you'll do if both connections fail during an incident (who you call, how you hand over)

For connectivity choices, see our guide to internet options for remote work in Nigeria.

Contracts and getting paid

Most foreign employers will hire you as an independent contractor or through an employer of record (EOR) such as Deel or Remote. Each arrangement affects leave, notice and tax differently. Payment usually comes in dollars through Payoneer, Wise, Grey, Deel or a domiciliary account. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options and fees, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria covers what you owe.

Common mistakes and red flags

  • Trusting aggregator labels. As the Social Discovery Group example shows, "Anywhere" on a third-party board can be wrong. Open the employer's ad.
  • Listing tools you've never used in production. A five-minute technical question exposes it. Separate "production" from "lab" on your CV.
  • Ignoring documentation. Remote employers read your written answers closely. Sloppy writing suggests sloppy change records.
  • Agreeing to on-call without terms. Get the rota, response times and night pay in writing.
  • Accepting admin access before a contract. A real employer gives you privileged access only after hiring and onboarding. Be wary of anyone who asks you to log in to systems, buy equipment through them, or pay for "training" before an offer. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work as a remote systems administrator from Nigeria?

Yes, when the employer accepts people based in Nigeria. Look for ads marked worldwide, global or EMEA without a country list. Many sysadmin roles are restricted to the US, UK, EU or single countries because of data access and compliance rules, so check the location line before applying.

What is the difference between a systems administrator and infrastructure support?

They are largely the same job family. Infrastructure support roles usually take escalations from the helpdesk and maintain servers, accounts and networks, while "systems administrator" can mean more ownership of servers and projects. Search for both titles.

Do I need a degree to get a remote sysadmin job?

Not always. BLS says US employers typically want a bachelor's degree but some accept a certificate or associate degree, and some remote ads still list one. Production experience, a documented home lab and one relevant certification usually count for more.

Is Windows or Linux better for remote sysadmin work?

Neither is better overall. Windows administration fits MSPs and corporate employers and pairs with Azure and Microsoft 365. Linux fits tech, hosting and SaaS companies and leads more naturally to DevOps. Choose the one closest to your current experience.

How many years of experience do remote sysadmin jobs ask for?

Senior remote ads commonly ask for five years or more, and mid-level ads around three. Entry-level remote sysadmin roles are rare. Most people start in remote IT support or a local sysadmin job and move up.

Which certification should a Nigerian sysadmin get first?

Get the one that matches your path. AZ-104 suits Windows and Azure admins and renews free every 12 months. RHCSA (hands-on) or CompTIA Linux+ suits Linux admins. Check the price for Nigeria on the provider's checkout before you budget.

How much does a remote systems administrator earn?

The US median was $99,130 a year in May 2025 (BLS), about ₦135 million at ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026). That is a US benchmark. Nigeria-based remote admins are usually paid less, depending on seniority, cloud skills and contract type.

Key takeaways

  • Remote systems administrator jobs centre on Windows Server or Linux, Active Directory or Entra ID, virtualisation, scripting, cloud and backups, plus clear written documentation.
  • Senior remote ads commonly ask for five years or more; entry-level remote sysadmin roles are rare, so IT support is the usual way in.
  • Many sysadmin roles are country-restricted because of privileged access. Open the employer's own ad and target worldwide or EMEA listings.
  • Choose a Windows path (AZ-104) or a Linux path (RHCSA or Linux+), not both at once.
  • The BLS US median of $99,130 (May 2025) is a benchmark, not what a Nigeria-based admin should expect.
  • Backup power, two internet connections and clear on-call terms are part of being employable from Nigeria.
