You can get a remote Microsoft 365 administrator job from Nigeria, but most of the ads you'll find won't take you. Many remote M365 admin roles say "US only" or "UK only", or they need a security clearance. The jobs you can actually get usually come from managed service providers (MSPs), companies hiring across EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), and contract work for small businesses abroad.
The skill itself suits remote work well. The whole job happens in a browser and PowerShell. You manage users, mailboxes, Teams, SharePoint, devices and security policies for a company's Microsoft 365 tenant from wherever you sit.
This guide covers the daily work, the certificate change that every applicant needs to know about (MS-102 retires on 30 November 2026), SharePoint admin as a related route, what the pay data shows, and how to set yourself up in Nigeria so an employer will trust you with admin access.
Quick answer
Remote Microsoft 365 administrators manage a company's Microsoft 365 tenant: Entra ID users and groups, Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive, Intune devices and Defender and Purview security settings. Nigerians can do the job remotely, but they need to look for roles open to Nigeria, EMEA or worldwide applicants. Employers want real admin experience, PowerShell and, from late 2026, the AB-650 exam instead of MS-102.
What a remote Microsoft 365 administrator actually does
A Microsoft 365 administrator looks after one organisation's cloud setup, called a "tenant". Microsoft describes the role as the "integrating hub" for all Microsoft 365 workloads. That means you coordinate with the people who own identity, security, compliance and devices, according to the Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert certification page.
In practice, a normal week includes tickets and project work like these:
| Workload | What you handle |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Entra ID | Users, groups, licences, MFA, conditional access |
| Exchange Online | Mailboxes, shared mailboxes, mail flow, spam rules |
| Teams | Team policies, guest access, meeting settings |
| SharePoint and OneDrive | Sites, permissions, external sharing, storage |
| Intune | Enrolling laptops and phones, compliance policies |
| Defender and Purview | Security alerts, data loss prevention, retention |
At a small company, one person might do all of this. At a large one, each row can be a separate job. That's why you'll see ads for "Exchange Online administrator", "Teams administrator" and "SharePoint administrator" next to the general M365 admin ones.
Two things make the role different from general IT support. First, you hold privileged access, so a mistake can lock out a whole company or expose files. Second, much of the work is scripted with Microsoft Graph PowerShell, especially bulk changes and reports. If you mainly reset passwords and fix printers today, you're doing IT support work, which is the usual way into M365 admin but isn't the same job.
Can you do a Microsoft 365 admin job remotely from Nigeria?
Yes, when the employer or client accepts people based in Nigeria. The catch is that employers rarely hand tenant-wide admin rights to someone they can't easily vet or employ, so location limits are common in this field.
When you read a remote M365 admin ad, it will usually fall into one of these groups:
| Ad says | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| "Remote, US only" or "UK only" | You must live there and have work rights. Skip it. |
| Clearance, GCC High or government tenant | You need citizenship or clearance. Skip it. |
| "Remote, EMEA" | Often includes Nigeria, but check the country list |
| "Remote, worldwide" or "anywhere" | Open in principle. Check how they pay contractors. |
| MSP or outsourcing firm | Often hires abroad to cover more hours |
| Freelance or project contract | Open to anyone a client trusts |
As of October 2026, our searches of public job boards turned up remote M365 admin ads mainly limited to the US, Poland and other single countries, plus some EMEA and multi-region roles. We couldn't confirm a live ad that names Nigeria for this exact title, which shows how competitive the open roles are. For how to read these labels properly, see our planned guides on what EMEA means in a job ad and what "worldwide remote" means from Nigeria.
If a foreign company hires you, it will probably be as an independent contractor or through an employer of record (EOR). The difference affects your leave, pension and tax. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employee arrangements explains both.
Skills employers ask for in remote M365 admin roles
The core platform
Every serious M365 admin ad asks for hands-on experience with Entra ID, Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online and Intune. Microsoft's own certification page also lists working knowledge of networking, Active Directory Domain Services, DNS and PowerShell (Microsoft Learn).
DNS matters more than beginners expect. Setting up a custom domain or fixing mail delivery means editing MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records. Interviewers like to ask about all four.
PowerShell and automation
Remote employers care about PowerShell because it shows you can work without someone watching. A script that bulk-creates 50 users from a CSV file, or that reports which accounts have no MFA, is proof you can send across the internet. Microsoft's newer AB-650 exam expects familiarity with Microsoft Graph PowerShell specifically (AB-650 exam page), so learn the Graph modules rather than the older retired ones.
Security, compliance and now Copilot
Security has taken over more of the job. The AB-650 exam puts 40 to 45% of its weight on governing and securing tenants and workloads. Another 35 to 40% goes on managing and securing AI services such as Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents (Microsoft Learn, as of October 2026). That weighting tells you where employers are heading. An admin who can explain how Copilot uses SharePoint permissions, and why oversharing is now a real risk, has an edge.
Remote working habits
Because you'll be in a different city and maybe a different time zone, you need clear written change notes, a habit of testing in a pilot group before rolling out to everyone, and good tickets in tools like ServiceNow, Jira Service Management or Freshservice.
Microsoft 365 certifications in late 2026: MS-102 is retiring
This is the most time-sensitive part of the guide, and many ranking pages haven't caught up yet.
MS-102 and the Expert certificate. The exam behind the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert certificate is MS-102. Microsoft's certification page says the certificate and exam will retire on 30 November 2026, and after that you can't earn or renew it. To hold the Expert title you also need at least one associate certificate: Endpoint Administrator, Teams Administrator, Identity and Access Administrator, or Information Security Administrator (Microsoft Learn, checked October 2026).
AB-650, the replacement. Exam AB-650, Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services, leads to a new credential: Microsoft 365 Certified: Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate. As of October 2026 it's still in beta, offered in English only, and a practice assessment isn't available yet (Microsoft Learn).
So what should you do?
- If you already hold the Expert certificate: it stays on your record after it retires. Keep it on your CV with the year.
- If you're nearly ready for MS-102 and already hold a qualifying associate cert: you can still sit it before 30 November 2026, but it won't renew, so you'll still need AB-650 later.
- If you're starting now: study for AB-650. It's what employers will see on new CVs from 2027.
Microsoft prices exams by the country where you sit them, so check the current Nigerian price on the exam page before you book. Don't rely on a figure from a blog. Renewals for role-based certificates are free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, and Microsoft's study material on Learn is free.
For how M365 certificates compare with Azure, AWS, CompTIA and security certificates, see our planned guide to the best IT certifications for remote jobs.
Remote SharePoint administrator jobs
SharePoint admin is a narrower role inside the Microsoft 365 family. It works as a stepping stone and also as a specialism in its own right, especially at law firms, NGOs, consultancies and any organisation drowning in documents.
What a SharePoint administrator does
According to Microsoft's description of the SharePoint Administrator role, people with this role can use the SharePoint admin centre to:
- create and delete sites
- designate site admins
- manage sharing settings at organisation level
- manage site storage limits
- manage Microsoft 365 groups, including creating, deleting and restoring them and changing owners
They can also manage SharePoint and OneDrive with PowerShell. Microsoft notes that SharePoint admins don't automatically see every site's content, but they can give themselves access. That's exactly why employers vet these hires carefully. Microsoft also recommends granting the fewest permissions needed and keeping Global Administrator for emergencies only. If you say this in an interview, you show you understand least privilege.
Real SharePoint jobs go beyond the admin centre. They also include information architecture (how sites, hubs and metadata are organised), migrations from file shares or Google Drive, permissions clean-ups, and building simple workflows with Power Automate.
How to get a remote SharePoint administrator job
- Master permissions first. Most SharePoint tickets are "I can't see this folder" or "Why can an outsider open this file?" Learn inheritance, sharing links, groups and external sharing levels until you can explain them without notes.
- Learn the migration tools. Many contracts are migrations. Practise moving a messy folder structure into a clean SharePoint site with proper metadata, and write down what you did.
- Add Power Automate and lists. Small businesses love an admin who can replace an email approval chain with a SharePoint list and a flow.
- Tie it to Copilot. Copilot can surface anything a user has permission to see, so SharePoint permission audits have become a selling point. Put it in your pitch.
- Target the right buyers. Look at MSPs, legal and professional-services firms, and freelance clients who need a one-off migration or clean-up. Those buyers hire remote contractors more readily than banks or government do.
- Show your work. Make a short write-up or screen recording of a site you built in a test tenant. It's more convincing than a list of features on your CV.
There's no separate current Microsoft certificate for SharePoint admin. SharePoint governance appears inside the broader M365 admin exams, so AB-650 is the certificate to aim for.
How much remote Microsoft 365 administrators earn
There's no reliable public dataset for what Nigeria-based M365 admins earn from foreign employers. Here are the benchmarks we could verify, with their limits.
| Benchmark | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| US network and computer systems administrators (BLS) | $99,130 a year median, May 2025 | US on-site and remote pay |
| UK remote or hybrid M365 administrator (ITJobsWatch) | £60,000 median, 6 months to 27 October 2026 | Only 2 advertised salaries |
| UK all remote or hybrid IT jobs (ITJobsWatch) | £60,000 median, 10th to 90th percentile £35,000 to £100,000 | 16,244 advertised salaries |
Sources: US Bureau of Labor Statistics and ITJobsWatch. Converted at WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM, 23 October 2026), the BLS median is about ₦135 million a year. Treat that as a ceiling for comparison, not an offer you should expect.
These figures are for people who live in the US or UK. A Nigeria-based contractor will usually be offered less, sometimes much less, because many companies set pay by location. On the other hand, a single client paying in dollars can still pay far more than local on-site roles. What moves your rate up:
- the scope of your work, from helpdesk-level tasks up to owning the whole tenant
- security and compliance skills (conditional access, Purview, Defender)
- migration experience, which clients pay for as a project
- overlap with their working hours
- current certificates and verifiable references
The BLS also projects that employment for network and computer systems administrators will fall about 4% between 2025 and 2035. Pure "keep the lights on" admin work is shrinking, and admins who add security, automation and AI governance are the ones staying in demand. For broader pay comparisons, see our guide to the best-paying remote jobs for Nigerians.
How to get hired as a remote M365 admin from Nigeria
- Get the foundation job first if you don't have it. Almost nobody is hired straight into tenant administration. A year or two in helpdesk or desktop support, in Nigeria or remotely, gives you the stories interviewers want. See our planned guide to remote IT support jobs for beginners.
- Build a test tenant. Use a trial or test Microsoft 365 environment (check Microsoft's current trial terms) and break things on purpose: set up conditional access, lock yourself out, recover, configure DMARC and enrol a device in Intune.
- Write three PowerShell scripts you can show. Good choices are a bulk user creation script, an MFA status report and a licence clean-up report. Put them on GitHub with a clear README.
- Document your projects like change records. For each one, write the problem, the change, how you tested it and how you'd roll it back. Remote hiring managers read this as evidence of how you'll work.
- Earn the current certificate. Aim for AB-650. If you already have Teams, Endpoint or Identity associate certs, list them too.
- Apply where Nigeria is allowed. That means MSPs, EMEA-remote roles, worldwide-remote roles, and freelance clients for migrations and clean-ups.
- Prepare for a practical interview. Expect scenarios such as "A user says email to Gmail is bouncing. Walk me through it."
Example (hypothetical): a weak CV line says "Managed Office 365 for the company." A stronger one says "Ran a 120-user tenant: enforced MFA through conditional access, moved 400 GB of file-share data to SharePoint, and scripted a weekly licence report that cut unused licences."
If you're moving from support into Azure or infrastructure instead, our planned guides on getting a remote Azure engineer job and moving from IT support to cloud engineering cover that route. The cloud engineer career guide is already live.
Nigeria-specific realities: power, internet, hours and pay
Power and internet
An admin who drops off a call halfway through a mail-flow change scares employers. You need an inverter or solar backup that can run your laptop and router through a full shift, plus two independent internet connections (for example fibre or Starlink as the main line and a MiFi or phone hotspot as backup). Mention this setup in interviews, because employers ask about it.
Working hours
Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. Since UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026, London is one hour behind Lagos, so a 9am to 5pm UK shift runs 10am to 6pm in Lagos until late March. Central European time is the same as Lagos in winter. US Eastern is five hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026 and six hours behind after that, so a US 9am start is 3pm in Lagos in winter and the shift ends at 11pm.
Admin work also includes after-hours change windows. Weekend or late-night maintenance is common, so ask about it before you accept.
Security expectations
Expect background checks, a company-issued laptop, a password manager, phishing-resistant MFA, and sometimes privileged access that's only turned on when you need it. Never do admin work for a client on a shared or cybercafé computer.
Getting paid and tax
Contractors usually get paid through Deel, Remote, Payoneer, Wise or a domiciliary account. Fees and limits differ, and our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares them. Foreign income still needs to be handled under Nigerian tax rules. See tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
Where to find remote Microsoft 365 admin roles
- WorkRemote's tech listings: each listing on our remote tech jobs page shows the company, its website and where applicants may live. WorkRemote reviews listings and aims to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but can't check every detail, and employers decide who they hire.
- MSP careers pages: managed service providers in the UK, Europe and South Africa run many client tenants and sometimes hire across time zones. Check each careers page for the countries it accepts. Our planned guide on finding remote jobs on company career pages explains how.
- Freelance platforms: good for SharePoint migrations, tenant set-ups and security clean-ups for small businesses.
- LinkedIn: search "Microsoft 365 administrator" or "Modern Workplace engineer", filter for remote, and read each ad's location line carefully.
Job titles vary, so search more than one: "M365 administrator", "Office 365 administrator", "Modern Workplace engineer", "Digital Workplace administrator", "Microsoft 365 engineer", "SharePoint administrator" and "Collaboration engineer".
Common mistakes and red flags
- Applying to "US only" ads. Recruiters screen on location first. Applying anyway costs you time and can hurt your standing with that recruiter.
- Listing MS-102 as "in progress" in 2027. It won't exist. Show AB-650 or a current associate cert instead.
- Claiming Global Admin experience you don't have. A good interviewer will catch it within two questions about conditional access or mail flow.
- Using retired PowerShell modules in samples. Use Microsoft Graph PowerShell.
- "Admin" jobs that ask you to pay for training or software licences. No legitimate employer charges you to start. Read our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.
- Being asked to give someone admin access to "test" you. Never hand over credentials to a tenant you manage, and never accept credentials sent over WhatsApp.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Nigerian work as a remote Microsoft 365 administrator for a foreign company?
Yes, if the employer accepts applicants living in Nigeria. Many remote M365 admin ads are limited to one country or need a security clearance, so focus on roles labelled EMEA, worldwide or contractor, and confirm eligibility on the live ad.
Is MS-102 still worth taking in 2026?
Only if you're nearly ready and already hold a qualifying associate certificate. Microsoft retires MS-102 and the Administrator Expert certificate on 30 November 2026, after which it can't be earned or renewed. New learners should prepare for AB-650 instead.
What replaces MS-102?
Exam AB-650, Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services, which leads to the Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate certificate. As of October 2026 it's in beta and offered in English only.
How do I get a remote SharePoint administrator job?
Get very good at permissions, sharing settings and migrations, and then show it. Build a test site, document a migration, add a Power Automate workflow, and target MSPs, professional-services firms and freelance migration projects, which hire remote contractors more readily.
Do I need a degree to become a Microsoft 365 administrator?
Not always. The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as typical for US systems administrators, but many M365 admin ads put more weight on hands-on experience, PowerShell and certificates. A degree helps most with large, formal employers.
How much does a remote Microsoft 365 administrator earn?
US benchmarks are high: the BLS median for systems administrators was $99,130 a year in May 2025. Nigeria-based contractors are usually offered less because of location-based pay. Your rate depends on how much of the tenant you own, your security skills and your hours.
Can I practise Microsoft 365 administration without a job?
Yes. Use a trial or test tenant (check Microsoft's current terms), Microsoft Learn's free modules, and Microsoft's exam sandbox. Write PowerShell scripts and document small projects so you have something to show employers.
Key takeaways
- Remote M365 admin work suits remote working, but many ads only take people in one country or with clearance, so filter for EMEA, worldwide, MSP and freelance roles.
- MS-102 and the Administrator Expert certificate retire on 30 November 2026. AB-650 (in beta as of October 2026) is the certificate to plan for.
- Security, PowerShell (Microsoft Graph) and Copilot governance are where demand is going. Basic admin work is shrinking.
- SharePoint admin is a real specialism. Permissions, migrations and Power Automate are what clients pay for.
- US and UK pay figures are benchmarks only. Nigeria-based contractors usually earn less, but dollar or pound pay can still beat local roles.
- Backup power, two internet connections and strong account security are part of being hireable from Nigeria.
