How to become a remote IT support specialist from Nigeria
The fastest route into remote IT support is a service desk job: answering tickets, chats and calls from a company's staff and fixing what you can without touching the hardware. To get one, learn Windows and Microsoft 365 administration, identity tools like Active Directory and Entra ID, basic networking and one ticketing system, then back it up with CompTIA A+ or the Google IT Support Certificate and a home lab you can show.
The honest part first: plenty of IT support work can't be done from Lagos. Someone has to plug in the printer, swap the dead laptop and run cables in the new office, so many "IT support" ads are on-site or hybrid. The remote ones are mostly help desk roles at managed service providers (MSPs) and outsourcing firms, internal IT for remote-first companies, and support for SaaS tools that staff use. Those roles often run on US or Australian hours.

What a remote it support specialist does
An IT support specialist looks after the people inside a company, not its customers (that's technical support, which we cover separately). When a sales manager can't get into Outlook, a new hire needs a laptop and accounts by Monday, or the VPN drops for the whole finance team, the ticket comes to you.
Support is usually split into tiers. Level 1 (service desk) handles password resets, MFA problems, access requests, basic software issues and triage. Level 2 takes harder device, network and application problems. Level 3 is usually the systems or cloud team. Most remote jobs open to Nigerians start at Level 1 or Level 2.
Working remotely changes the toolkit. You fix things through remote control tools (TeamViewer, AnyDesk, ConnectWise ScreenConnect, Windows Quick Assist), through admin centres for Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Intune, and through device management that lets you push software or wipe a lost laptop without seeing it. When hardware does fail, you arrange a courier replacement rather than walking to someone's desk.
A day in the role
- Work through a queue in ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, Zendesk or Freshservice, keeping each ticket inside its SLA
- Reset passwords and MFA methods in Entra ID or Active Directory after checking the caller is who they say they are
- Set up a new starter: create the account, assign Microsoft 365 licences and groups, and enrol their laptop in Intune
- Take remote control of a user's laptop to fix Outlook, Teams, printer drivers or VPN problems
- Escalate what you can't fix to Level 2 or the cloud team with clear notes on what you've already tried
- Offboard a leaver: block sign-in, revoke sessions, convert their mailbox to a shared mailbox and arrange laptop return
- Write or update a knowledge base article so the next person, or the user, can solve the same problem faster
Skills you need
Core skills
- Windows troubleshooting
Most corporate laptops run Windows 11. Know Settings, Device Manager, Event Viewer, Task Manager, safe mode, user profiles and how to read an error message properly before searching it.
- Microsoft 365 administration
Outlook, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint cause a big share of tickets. Learn the Microsoft 365 admin centre: licences, mailboxes, shared mailboxes, distribution lists and message trace.
- Active Directory and Entra ID
Accounts, groups, password resets, account lockouts and MFA. Many companies run both: on-premises Active Directory synced to Entra ID (formerly Azure AD). Know the difference and where each change is made.
- Intune and device management
Remote IT runs on device management. Learn enrolment, compliance policies, app deployment, and the difference between retiring a device (removes company data) and wiping it (factory reset).
- Networking basics
DNS, DHCP, IP addressing, VPNs and Wi-Fi. Be fluent with
ipconfig /all,ping,nslookup,tracertandipconfig /flushdns, and know that a 169.254.x.x address means the machine never got one from DHCP.- ITIL basics
Service desks speak ITIL: incidents versus service requests, problems, changes, SLAs, and priority set by impact and urgency. You don't need the certificate on day one, but you need the vocabulary.
- PowerShell
Even simple scripts save hours, such as
Get-ADUserlookups,Search-ADAccount -LockedOutto find locked accounts, or bulk-adding users to a group. Employers notice when your CV shows you automate repetitive tickets.- macOS and Google Workspace
Startups and creative firms often run Macs and Google Workspace. Knowing Jamf or Kandji basics and the Google Admin console widens the jobs you can apply for.
- Security habits
Help desks are a favourite target for social engineering. Always verify identity before resetting a password or MFA, spot phishing reports quickly and never share credentials in chat.
Soft skills
- Patience with non-technical people
The person on the call is stressed and late for a meeting. Talk them through steps in plain words and never make them feel stupid.
- Clear ticket notes
Remote service desks work in shifts across time zones. If your notes are vague, the next engineer starts from zero and the user explains everything again.
- Knowing when to escalate
Spending two hours on a ticket you should have escalated in twenty minutes hurts the SLA. Good Level 1 staff fix fast or hand over cleanly.
- Calm on a bad day
When email is down for the whole company, you'll get fifty tickets in ten minutes. Staying organised and posting one clear update beats replying to each one in a panic.
Tools you'll use
ServiceNow
The ticketing platform at many large companies and MSPs; worth knowing the incident and request screens
Jira Service Management
Common at tech companies already using Jira; queues, SLAs and a knowledge base in one place
Zendesk or Freshservice
Popular with smaller companies and SaaS firms for internal IT tickets
Microsoft 365 and Entra admin centres
Where you manage users, licences, groups, MFA and mailboxes
Microsoft Intune
Device enrolment, compliance, app deployment and remote wipe for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android
Active Directory Users and Computers
The classic console for on-premises accounts, groups and organisational units
TeamViewer, AnyDesk or ScreenConnect
Remote control tools; Windows also includes Quick Assist
NinjaOne, Datto RMM or ConnectWise
Remote monitoring and management tools that most MSPs use to patch and manage client devices
VirtualBox with Windows Server evaluation
Free way to build a home lab with a domain controller and test machines
PowerShell
Built into Windows; use it for Active Directory and Microsoft Graph tasks

Getting hired from Nigeria
Build a home lab and write it up. Install VirtualBox, set up Windows Server (the free evaluation edition) as a domain controller, join a Windows 11 virtual machine to the domain, create users and groups, apply a Group Policy, then break things on purpose (wrong DNS server, expired password, disabled account) and fix them. Document each fix with screenshots on GitHub or a simple blog. This gives you real stories for interviews, which matters more than the certificate.
Customer service experience counts. If you've worked in a call centre, a bank branch or a phone repair shop, put it near the top of your CV. Service desks hire for patience and communication as much as technical knowledge.
Where the remote roles are. MSPs in the US, UK and Australia that run 24/7 service desks; outsourcing and BPO firms that staff help desks for foreign clients; remote-first companies that need someone to manage laptops and accounts for staff in many countries; and Nigerian firms with remote or hybrid IT teams. Himalayas lists remote IT support jobs filtered for Nigeria, and LinkedIn with location set to Remote plus EMEA or worldwide filters works too. On Upwork, small one-off jobs are common: setting up Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace for a small business, moving email, or fixing SPF, DKIM and DMARC records.
Read the location line twice. Many "remote" IT support ads still say "must be within commuting distance" or "occasional site visits", or need US security clearance. Apply where the ad says worldwide, EMEA, Africa or Nigeria, or where the employer hires through Deel or Remote.com.
Expect background checks and shift work. You'll have admin access to staff accounts, so employers often run identity and reference checks. US clients usually mean working 2pm to 10pm or overnight in Lagos; UK clients line up with your normal day for most of the year (one hour behind in winter, same hour in summer).
Set up for calls. A noise-cancelling headset, a quiet room, an inverter or solar backup and two internet connections from different providers are the minimum. On a voice-heavy service desk, a dropped connection is a dropped customer.
Getting paid. Contractor roles usually pay through Deel, Remote.com, Payoneer or direct transfer. Many Nigerians receive dollars into Payoneer, Grey or Raenest, or a domiciliary account. Check fees before you agree a rate.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Applying to on-site or hybrid roles that happen to appear in remote searches. If the ad mentions a site, a car or a driving licence, it isn't for you.
- Paying for Microsoft 365 Fundamentals (MS-900) courses. Microsoft has retired that certification, so put the money towards A+ or MD-102 instead.
- Collecting certificates with no hands-on lab. Interviewers ask "tell me about a time you fixed..." and certificate holders without a lab struggle to answer.
- Resetting a password or MFA because the caller sounds senior and in a hurry. Skipping identity checks is how companies get breached, and how support staff get fired.
- Writing ticket notes like "fixed". The next shift, the auditor and your manager all need to know what you did.
- Accepting night shifts without a plan for power and rest. Overnight US coverage is common, and burnout is the main reason people leave.
Questions people ask
Can I do IT support remotely from Nigeria?
Yes, for service desk and help desk work, Microsoft 365 and Intune administration, and support at MSPs and remote-first companies. Jobs that involve hardware, printers, cabling or office setups need someone on site, so they're not open to you from Nigeria.
Is CompTIA A+ worth it?
Yes for a first IT job, especially with US and UK MSPs, which often list it in ads. It covers hardware, networking, operating systems and security at a solid entry level. It costs two exam fees, so check the price for your region and use free videos like Professor Messer's to study.
Google IT Support Certificate or CompTIA A+: which should I do first?
Many people do the Google certificate first because it's cheaper and more guided, then sit A+, which employers recognise more. If you complete both, you get a dual Google and CompTIA credential.
Do I need a degree to work in IT support?
No. BLS notes that many US support specialists qualify with some college courses or a high school diploma plus certifications, and remote employers care more about certificates, lab work and how you handle users.
How much do IT support specialists earn in Nigeria?
For local jobs, Payscale shows an average base of about ₦1.96 million a year from only 30 self-reported profiles, so treat it as rough. US job ads on Indeed average $63,938 a year, but we couldn't find a credible public source for what Nigeria-based remote IT support staff earn in dollars, so we don't publish a remote salary range for this role.
Is IT support a dead-end job?
Not if you keep learning. BLS projects US employment of computer user support specialists to fall 3% between 2025 and 2035, so staying at Level 1 forever is risky. People who add Microsoft 365, Intune, scripting or cloud skills move into systems administration, cloud or security roles.

- Technical Support Specialist
A technical support specialist troubleshoots software, hardware or integration problems that ordinary customer support can't solve, reading logs, testing APIs and escalating real bugs to engineers. It's a strong remote option from Nigeria for people with IT or coding basics, and it pays noticeably better than general support once you can work at second-line level.
- Customer Support Specialist
A customer support specialist answers customers' questions and fixes their problems by email, live chat and sometimes phone, usually inside a helpdesk such as Zendesk, Intercom or Gorgias. It is one of the most realistic remote jobs to get from Nigeria, because most of the work is written and many employers hire worldwide.
- Cybersecurity Analyst
A cybersecurity analyst watches an organisation's systems for attacks, investigates suspicious alerts and helps contain incidents, usually from a security operations centre (SOC). Remote SOC work from Nigeria is possible, mostly through managed security providers and private companies, but many security jobs abroad require citizenship, security clearance or local background checks, and entry-level remote roles are scarce.
- Cloud Engineer
A cloud engineer builds and looks after a company's setup on AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud: the networks, permissions, servers, databases and storage, and the monthly bill. You can do it remotely from Nigeria, and it's one of the infrastructure roles where a certificate genuinely helps, but you'll still need hands-on projects to get past the technical interview.
