The IT certifications most likely to help a Nigerian get a remote job are CompTIA A+ for IT support, an entry cloud certificate (AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals) followed by an associate-level cloud exam, CCNA for networking, and CompTIA Security+ for entry security roles. Which one is "best" depends on the job you want, not on which certificate is most popular on social media.
That matters because each exam costs roughly ₦136,000 to over ₦600,000 at current rates, and many people pay for the wrong one. This guide shows which certifications line up with which remote IT jobs, what each costs as of October 2026, how to sit the exams online from Nigeria, and how to check whether employers in your target role actually ask for them. It also covers two recent changes: ISC2's free cybersecurity certificate offer has closed to new sign-ups, and a new Security+ version is about to launch.
Quick answer
Pick a certification by the remote role you want. For IT support, take CompTIA A+, with the Google IT Support certificate as cheaper preparation. For cloud, start with AWS Cloud Practitioner ($100) or Azure Fundamentals, then move to AWS Solutions Architect Associate ($150) or Google Associate Cloud Engineer ($125). For networking, take CCNA ($300). For security, take CompTIA Security+. A certificate supports a portfolio and an application. It doesn't replace them.
How we chose these certifications
We didn't rank certifications by hype. A certification made this list only if it met all four of these tests:
- Vendor-issued or industry-standard. It comes from the body that owns the technology or sets the standard (AWS, Microsoft, Google, Cisco, CompTIA, ISC2, the Linux Foundation), not from a training company's own "certificate".
- Linked to a real remote role. Remote employers hire for that skill, such as help desk, cloud support, network administration or security operations.
- Can be taken from Nigeria. You can sit the exam online with a proctor or at a Pearson VUE test centre, with no residency requirement.
- Published terms. We could confirm the fee, validity or structure on the issuer's own page in October 2026. Where we couldn't confirm a fee, we say so.
No list can tell you which certificate a particular employer wants. The section on reading job ads below shows how to check that yourself before you pay.
The best IT certifications for remote jobs at a glance
Fees are in US dollars as listed by each issuer, as of October 2026. Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and are rounded. Your bank or card provider may charge a higher rate plus fees.
| Certification | Best for | Exam fee | Valid for |
|---|---|---|---|

IT support certifications: CompTIA A+ and the Google IT Support certificate
IT support is the most common entry point into remote IT work. Remote help desk and technical support teams often cover US or UK hours. US Eastern business hours (9am to 5pm) run from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos in winter, so the job often means evening or night shifts.
CompTIA A+
CompTIA A+ is a two-exam certification. Core 1 covers hardware and networking, Core 2 covers operating systems and security, and you can take them in either order. CompTIA lists A+ against the help desk support specialist role on its certifications index.
According to CompTIA, the current Core 1 exam (220-1201) has up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, including performance-based tasks. CompTIA recommends about 12 months of hands-on experience in an IT support role. Beginners pass without that experience, but you should treat the recommendation as a sign that the exam tests practical work, not just definitions. The page says this exam version launched on 25 March 2025 and is expected to retire around 2028.
CompTIA doesn't show the voucher price on its certification pages, and we couldn't confirm a current official dollar price in October 2026. Check CompTIA's own store at checkout before you budget. Remember that A+ means paying for two exams, not one.
Google IT Support Professional Certificate
The Google IT Support Professional Certificate on Coursera is a six-course programme that Coursera estimates takes about three months at 10 hours a week. It's included in a Coursera Plus subscription, and Coursera offers financial aid for learners who can't afford the fee, which is worth applying for from Nigeria. Coursera says the programme prepares you for the CompTIA A+ exams.
Our view: the Google certificate is good, affordable structured learning. A+ is the better-known credential for the CV. If your budget is tight, use the Google course to prepare and take A+ when you can afford both exam vouchers.

Cloud certifications: AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud
Cloud roles (cloud support engineer, cloud engineer, DevOps) pay more than help desk work and are often run asynchronously across time zones. Most remote cloud jobs still expect hands-on project work, so think of a cloud certificate as proof that you know the vocabulary and the services. On its own it doesn't prove you can run production systems.
Start here: AWS Cloud Practitioner or Azure Fundamentals
The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner costs $100 (about ₦136,000 at the house rate). It has 65 questions in 90 minutes, lasts three years, and can be taken online with a proctor or at a Pearson VUE test centre.
Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) is a 45-minute proctored exam covering cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and governance. Microsoft prices it by the country where the exam is proctored, so the Nigerian price may differ from the US price. Check it when you schedule. If you fail, you can retake it after 24 hours.
Which one should you take? Pick the cloud that appears most often in the job ads you want. Choose Azure if you're aiming at companies built on Microsoft 365 and Windows servers. Don't pay for both fundamentals exams, because they cover the same basic ideas.
Then move up: AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Google Associate Cloud Engineer
Remote cloud hiring managers start paying attention at the associate level.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate: $150 (about ₦204,000), 65 questions in 130 minutes, valid for three years, available online. AWS recommends a year of hands-on AWS design experience and suggests people with no IT experience take Cloud Practitioner first.
- Google Associate Cloud Engineer: $125 (about ₦170,000) plus tax where applicable, two hours, 50 to 60 questions, valid for three years, available online. Google recommends six months or more of hands-on Google Cloud experience. A shorter renewal exam costs $75.
AWS appears in more job ads overall, but check your own target ads. Our cloud engineer career guide covers the projects to build alongside the certification. For a closer look at AWS certifications and roles, read our guide to remote AWS engineer jobs, which publishes with this series.
For DevOps and platform roles: CKA
The Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) from the Linux Foundation is a two-hour, online-proctored, hands-on exam: you solve tasks on a live command line instead of answering multiple-choice questions. It costs $445 for the exam alone (about ₦606,000) and lasts two years. Because it tests what you can actually do, it carries weight. It isn't a beginner certificate. Take it after you've used Kubernetes in projects. The DevOps engineer career guide explains where it fits.
Networking certification: Cisco CCNA
Cisco CCNA (exam 200-301) costs $300 (about ₦409,000), lasts 120 minutes and is valid for three years. Cisco says it assumes little to no prior networking knowledge and recommends practising with Cisco Packet Tracer or Cisco Modeling Labs. Packet Tracer is a good choice from Nigeria because you don't need to buy routers or switches.
Be honest with yourself about remote networking work. Many network engineering jobs involve physical equipment in a data centre or office, so fully remote network roles are fewer than remote support or cloud roles. CCNA pays off best when it's paired with cloud networking (VPCs, VPNs, DNS) or used to move up within an IT support job. Our planned article on remote network engineer jobs covers the role itself.
Entry security certifications: Security+ and ISC2 CC
CompTIA Security+
CompTIA lists Security+ for the security analyst, security engineer and systems administrator roles. The current V7 exam (SY0-701) has up to 90 questions in 90 minutes. CompTIA recommends Network+ and about two years in a security or systems administration role.
Timing matters as of October 2026: CompTIA says Security+ V8 is expected to launch on or around 17 November 2026, with more coverage of AI-related risks and security operations. If you're just starting to study, check which version your course covers. Usually the old version runs alongside the new one for a period, but confirm the dates on CompTIA's page before you book. As with A+, the voucher price wasn't shown on CompTIA's certification pages when we checked, so confirm it at CompTIA's checkout.
ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC): no longer free for new learners
For several years, ISC2's "One Million Certified in Cybersecurity" programme gave free training and a free exam, and many Nigerian blog posts still say it's free. As of October 2026, ISC2's own programme page says new enrolments closed on 20 May 2026. Free access now applies only to people who already hold an unexpired exam code, which must be used by 31 December 2026, or who enrolled in the course before the cut-off.
If you're starting now, the CC exam costs $199 (about ₦271,000), and you pay a $50 annual maintenance fee (about ₦68,000) after you pass. It has no work experience requirement. At that price, CC is no longer the obvious first step it used to be. Security+ is better known in job ads, so compare the two against the roles you're targeting.
For the full security picture, including advanced certificates, see our cybersecurity certifications guide, which publishes with this series, and the cybersecurity analyst career guide.
Which IT certification should you take first? A decision path
Use your target role to choose. Don't choose a certificate first and then look for a role that fits it.
| If your target remote role is... | First certification | Next certification |
|---|---|---|
| Help desk or IT support | CompTIA A+ | Azure Fundamentals or CCNA |
| Cloud support or cloud engineer | AWS Cloud Practitioner | AWS Solutions Architect Associate |
| Microsoft 365 or Azure admin | Azure Fundamentals | A Microsoft associate-level cert |
| Network support | CCNA | AWS or Azure associate |
| Security analyst (entry) | CompTIA Security+ | Role-specific security cert |
| DevOps or platform | AWS or Google associate | CKA |
Two rules apply to every route:
- Don't stack fundamentals certificates. AZ-900 plus AWS Cloud Practitioner plus Google Cloud Digital Leader tells an employer that you passed three introductory exams. One associate-level certificate plus a deployed project tells them much more.
- If you already have IT experience, skip the entry exam. AWS itself suggests Cloud Practitioner mainly for people with no IT background. A Nigerian sysadmin with three years of experience can go straight to an associate exam.
How to check which certifications remote employers actually want
Blog lists, including this one, are a starting point. The job ads you're aiming at are the real test. This method takes about an hour:
- Search for 20 current remote ads for your exact target title that are open to applicants in Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide. On WorkRemote you can browse remote tech job listings. Each listing shows where applicants may live.
- For each ad, note any certification named and whether it appears under "requirements" or under "nice to have" or "preferred".
- Count. If a certification appears as a requirement in five or more of the 20 ads, it's worth paying for. If it only appears as "nice to have", a portfolio project may do as much for you.
- Note which cloud (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud) and which tools (Zendesk, Jira, Microsoft Intune, Terraform) come up most. That tells you which certificate and which projects to choose.
Example (hypothetical): Chidi, a help desk officer in Enugu, tallies 20 remote "IT support specialist" ads. A+ appears in six, Microsoft 365 or Intune experience in eleven, and AWS in two. He takes A+, then builds a lab in a free Microsoft 365 developer tenant, because the ads show Microsoft skills matter more than cloud certificates for that role.
The difference between "required" and "preferred" also explains why a certificate alone rarely gets you hired. Employers screen for evidence that you can do the work, and the certificate is one piece of that evidence.
Taking certification exams online from Nigeria
Every exam above can be taken with an online proctor (AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft, CompTIA and Linux Foundation exams) or at a Pearson VUE centre. Cisco says it uses Pearson VUE, so check online availability for CCNA when you register. Taking the exam from home avoids travel, but a failed connection can cost you the fee.
Power and internet
- Plan for power. A grid outage halfway through an online exam can end your session. Book a slot when your inverter or solar battery is charged, and test that it can run your laptop, router and a light for longer than the exam.
- Have a second connection ready. Use your main broadband or Starlink, with a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network as backup. Run the provider's system test on the actual connection you'll use, at the same time of day as your booked slot.
- Choose your hours. Evening networks are often congested. Many people find early morning slots in Lagos more stable.
Room, ID and payment
- A clean, quiet room. Online proctors usually ask you to show your desk and room on camera. Clear the desk, close the door and tell the household. Read the specific rules in your exam confirmation email.
- Name on ID matching your account. Check the ID rules in your booking and make sure the name on your exam account matches your ID exactly, including the order of names. A mismatch is a common reason candidates are turned away.
- Paying in dollars. Exam fees are charged in US dollars. Many Nigerian naira cards have low international spending limits, so a virtual dollar card or a domiciliary account card is often easier. Our guide to receiving and using dollars in Nigeria compares the apps. Pay only on the issuer's own website or through Pearson VUE.
- Use a test centre if home is risky. If your power or internet is unreliable, a Pearson VUE centre in Lagos, Abuja or another city may be worth the trip. Check centre availability when you book.
What certifications won't do for you
A certificate gets your CV past some filters and shows you studied. It doesn't show that you've fixed a real problem. Remote employers, who can't watch you work, look for proof:
- A small portfolio. For cloud, a deployed app with infrastructure as code (Terraform or CloudFormation) on GitHub, with a clear README. For support, written troubleshooting guides or a home lab. For security, write-ups from TryHackMe or similar labs.
- Clear writing. Remote IT work runs on tickets and documentation, so your application messages are themselves a writing sample.
- Time-zone availability. State plainly which hours you can cover, for example "available for US Eastern hours (2pm to 10pm in Lagos from November)".
Be wary of anyone who sells a certificate with a "guaranteed remote job" attached, or who asks you to pay a "certification fee" before a job interview. Legitimate employers don't sell you certificates. Our page on spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the common tricks.
Frequently asked questions
Which IT certification is best for beginners in Nigeria who want remote work?
For most beginners, CompTIA A+ (for IT support) or AWS Cloud Practitioner (for cloud) is the best first certificate. A+ leads more directly to entry-level remote jobs. Cloud Practitioner is cheaper at $100 but needs an associate-level certificate on top before it opens many doors.
How much does an AWS certification cost in naira?
As of October 2026, AWS Cloud Practitioner costs $100 (about ₦136,000) and Solutions Architect Associate costs $150 (about ₦204,000), using ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026). AWS notes that taxes or foreign exchange fees may apply, and your card provider's rate may be worse than the official rate.
Is the ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity exam still free?
No, not for new learners. ISC2 closed new sign-ups to its free programme on 20 May 2026. Unused free exam codes already issued must be used by 31 December 2026. Otherwise the exam costs $199, plus a $50 annual fee once certified.
Can I take CompTIA, AWS or Microsoft exams online from Nigeria?
Yes. AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft, CompTIA and the Linux Foundation offer online-proctored exams or Pearson VUE test centres, and none of these exams has a residency requirement. Run the system test beforehand and have backup power and a second internet connection ready.
Is the Google IT Support certificate enough to get a remote job?
On its own it's usually not enough, but it's good preparation. Coursera says it prepares you for the CompTIA A+ exams, and A+ is better known to employers. The strongest application combines the course, A+ and a small home lab or written troubleshooting samples.
Do IT certifications expire?
Most do. AWS, Google Cloud and Cisco CCNA certifications are valid for three years, and CKA for two. ISC2 requires an annual maintenance fee. Plan for renewal costs, and check each issuer's renewal options, such as Google's $75 renewal exam.
Should I wait for the new Security+ V8 exam?
If you're early in your studies, check which version your course teaches. CompTIA expects V8 to launch around 17 November 2026. If you're nearly ready for V7 (SY0-701), confirm the V7 retirement date on CompTIA's site and book before then.
Do I need a computer science degree to get a remote IT job with certifications?
No, not for most support and cloud roles. Many remote IT employers hire on skills, evidence and certifications rather than degrees. Our upcoming article on remote IT jobs that don't need a computer science degree covers which roles are the most open.
Key takeaways
- Choose a certification by your target remote role: A+ for support, AWS or Azure for cloud, CCNA for networking, Security+ for entry security.
- Associate-level cloud certificates (AWS Solutions Architect Associate at $150, Google Associate Cloud Engineer at $125) carry more weight than stacked fundamentals exams.
- As of October 2026, ISC2's free CC offer is closed to new learners, and Security+ V8 is due around 17 November 2026.
- All of these exams can be taken from Nigeria, online or at a Pearson VUE centre, but reliable power and a backup connection are essential for online exams.
- Count the certifications that appear in 20 real job ads before you pay for one, and pair any certificate with project evidence.
