Remote AWS engineer jobs are open to Nigerians. Most of them want two to three years of hands-on AWS work, comfort with Terraform or CloudFormation, and one Associate-level AWS certificate. The certificate helps you get past a screening filter. It won't get you hired by itself: employers hire the person who can show them a working AWS setup they built and can explain.

This guide sticks to AWS. It covers the skills that come up again and again in AWS job ads, every current AWS certificate and what it costs in naira, which exam to take first for your background, and how to sit the exams online from Nigeria. It also looks at what live job ads asked for in October 2026, and it explains why so many "Remote from Anywhere" labels on aggregator sites are wrong. If you're still deciding whether cloud is the right field for you, start with our guide to becoming a remote cloud engineer from Nigeria and come back here when you're ready to pick a certificate.

Quick answer

To land a remote AWS engineer job from Nigeria, you need working skill in core AWS services (IAM, VPC, EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda), Linux, networking, Terraform or CloudFormation, and some scripting in Python or Bash. As of October 2026, AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate costs $150 (about ₦204,300 at ₦1,362 to $1, CBN, 23 October 2026). It's the most widely recognised first certificate. Before you apply anywhere, check that the job ad accepts people living in Nigeria.

What a remote AWS engineer actually does

"AWS engineer" is rarely the exact job title. Employers post AWS work under several titles, and the title tells you which certificate and skills matter most.

Job title in the adMain workClosest AWS certificate
Cloud engineer / AWS cloud engineerBuild and run AWS infrastructureSolutions Architect – Associate
DevOps engineerCI/CD pipelines, automation, deploymentsCloudOps Engineer – Associate, then DevOps Engineer – Professional
Site reliability / platform engineerUptime, monitoring, internal toolingCloudOps Engineer – Associate
Cloud developer / backend engineer (AWS)Serverless apps on Lambda, DynamoDB, API GatewayDeveloper – Associate
Cloud data engineerPipelines on S3, Glue, RedshiftData Engineer – Associate
Cloud security engineerIAM, guardrails, detectionSecurity – Specialty
Cloud field / solutions engineerCustomer-facing design workSolutions Architect – Associate or Professional

The cloud engineer and DevOps engineer rows make up most of the AWS ads you'll see on remote boards. If you write code for a living, the developer route is often shorter. If you come from IT support or system administration, the CloudOps route is the natural fit (our planned guide on moving from IT support into remote cloud engineering covers that path step by step).

The AWS skills remote employers ask for

AWS has more than 200 services, and nobody expects you to know them all. Job ads keep asking for the same small group.

Core AWS services

  • IAM (Identity and Access Management): users, roles, policies and least-privilege access. Interviewers ask about IAM more than almost anything else, because one bad policy can expose a whole company.
  • VPC networking: subnets, route tables, security groups, NAT gateways and how traffic gets in and out.
  • Compute: EC2, Auto Scaling groups and load balancers, plus Lambda for serverless work.
  • Storage and databases: S3 (including bucket policies), RDS, and DynamoDB at a basic level.
  • Containers: ECS or EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service). Kubernetes shows up in a large share of senior AWS ads.
  • Monitoring: CloudWatch metrics, logs and alarms, and CloudTrail for audit trails.

Infrastructure as code

Remote teams rarely click through the AWS console to build production systems. They write infrastructure as code, which means text files that define servers, networks and permissions, so that changes can be reviewed and repeated. Terraform is the tool you'll see most in ads, with AWS CloudFormation and AWS CDK close behind. For example, Protagona's AWS Cloud Engineer ad (checked 27 October 2026 through its listing on Jobgether) lists Terraform, CloudFormation, Kubernetes, Git and CI tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab and CircleCI.

Linux, networking and scripting

Linux is assumed. You should be comfortable with the shell, permissions, systemd, SSH and reading logs. On networking, you need DNS, CIDR ranges, TCP/IP and how TLS certificates work. For scripting, Python or Bash will do. Canonical's worldwide Cloud Field Engineer ad (below) asks for "intermediate to advanced" Python on top of Linux and networking knowledge.

The skills that separate senior candidates

  • Cost awareness: knowing why a NAT gateway or idle RDS instance inflates a bill, and how to tag resources and set budgets.
  • Security habits: encryption by default, secrets in AWS Secrets Manager or Parameter Store instead of code, and MFA everywhere.
  • Written communication: remote teams make decisions in writing. A clear design document or incident write-up is worth as much as a certificate.

AWS certifications in 2026: the full list and what they cost

AWS sorts its certificates into four levels: Foundational, Associate, Professional and Specialty. Each one stays valid for three years after you pass. Prices below come from AWS's own exam policies page, as of October 2026. Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and are rounded. Your bank may charge more for the card transaction.

LevelExam priceIn naira (approx.)
Foundational$100₦136,200
Associate$150₦204,300
Professional$300₦408,600
Specialty$300₦408,600

Current AWS certificates (as of October 2026)

AWS's certification exams page listed these:

  • Foundational: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, AWS Certified AI Practitioner
  • Associate: Solutions Architect, Developer, CloudOps Engineer, Data Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer
  • Professional: Solutions Architect – Professional, DevOps Engineer – Professional
  • Specialty: Security – Specialty, Advanced Networking – Specialty (retiring 31 December 2026)
  • Business (beta): AWS Certified AI Business Strategist

Two changes catch people out. First, the old SysOps Administrator – Associate has been renamed. The CloudOps Engineer – Associate page says people who pass the SOA-C03 exam now get the CloudOps title, while existing SysOps holders keep theirs. Many recruiters still write "SysOps" in ads, so put both names on your CV if you hold either one. Second, Advanced Networking – Specialty retires at the end of 2026, so don't start studying for it now.

The exams that matter most for remote AWS jobs

AWS says it's updating some exams, including Solutions Architect – Professional and Developer – Associate, so check the exam guide version before you buy a course.

Which AWS certificate to take first

Pick based on where you're starting from, not on which badge looks the most impressive.

  • No tech background: Cloud Practitioner. It teaches the vocabulary and costs the least. On its own it won't get you an engineering job, because employers treat it as a starting point and not as proof of skill.
  • Developer (backend, Python, Node.js): Developer – Associate if you want serverless and backend roles. Take Solutions Architect – Associate instead if you want to move fully into infrastructure.
  • IT support or sysadmin: CloudOps Engineer – Associate. It tests what you already do (monitoring, patching, backups, troubleshooting) on AWS.
  • Already working with AWS: Solutions Architect – Associate first, then DevOps Engineer – Professional or Solutions Architect – Professional for senior roles.
  • Data or security specialists: Data Engineer – Associate or Security – Specialty, after an Associate exam.

If you're weighing AWS against Azure or Google Cloud, our planned guides to remote Azure engineer jobs and remote Google Cloud engineer jobs cover those certificate tracks. Our planned roundup of the best IT certifications for remote jobs compares them all side by side.

What certificates will not do for you

A Professional certificate with no project history often gets rejected at the technical interview. The person interviewing you will ask you to explain a VPC you designed or an outage you fixed. Ads usually list a certificate as a preference rather than a requirement: Protagona's ad lists "AWS Associate or Pro certification" as preferred, not required. Treat the certificate as a filter you need to get past and the portfolio as the thing that gets you hired.

Taking AWS exams from Nigeria

You don't have to travel to sit an AWS exam. According to AWS's exam policies, every AWS certification exam can be taken online with a Pearson VUE proctor, and English-language exams are available 24 hours a day. You can also book a Pearson VUE test centre if your home setup is unreliable.

Practical points for Nigerian candidates (rules as of October 2026):

  1. Pay with a card that works abroad. Exam fees are charged in dollars. A naira card with a low international spending limit may be declined, so a virtual dollar card or a domiciliary account card is usually easier. Our guide on receiving and spending dollars from Nigeria compares the options.
  2. Protect your power and internet during the exam. An online proctored exam can be ended if your connection drops for long. Book a time when grid supply is usually stable, charge your inverter fully, and keep a second network (a MiFi or phone hotspot) ready. For a 130-minute exam, a test centre is the safer choice if your area has frequent outages.
  3. Know the booking rules. AWS lets you reschedule an appointment only twice. You must cancel at least 24 hours ahead or you lose the fee.
  4. Use the 50% voucher. Passing an AWS exam earns you a 50% discount voucher for a later exam. AWS's policy says the voucher applies to the exam price at the time you buy. Taking your Associate exam at half price (about $75) is a real saving.
  5. Plan for renewal. Certificates last three years. Put the expiry date in your calendar, because a lapsed certificate on your CV raises questions.

Cheap and free ways to prepare

The Cloud Practitioner page lists official preparation resources: the exam guide, an Official Practice Question Set and Pretest, an exam prep plan on AWS Skill Builder, AWS Cloud Quest and free AWS Training Live sessions on Twitch. Some Skill Builder content needs a paid subscription, so check the price before you sign up.

AWS re/Start is a free, cohort-based training programme for people aged 18 and over who are unemployed or underemployed. You don't need a tech background. AWS says learners get free access to practice exams and full certification exams. Locations depend on which local organisations are running cohorts, so check the official page for current Nigerian cohorts before relying on it. Be wary of anyone who charges you a fee to "register" for re/Start.

What live remote AWS job ads asked for (October 2026)

We searched remote job boards on 27 October 2026 for AWS roles that accept applicants from Nigeria, Africa or worldwide. Here is what we found when we opened the ads. These are examples to show you what employers ask for. Jobs close and eligibility changes, so always check the live ad.

Canonical: Cloud Field Engineer (home based, worldwide)

Canonical's Cloud Field Engineer ad on Greenhouse gave its location as "Home based - Worldwide" when we checked on 27 October 2026. The role covers designing cloud solutions on-premises or on public clouds including AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. It asks for:

  • knowledge of Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph and the major public clouds
  • practical Linux and networking skills
  • intermediate to advanced Python
  • strong spoken and written English

There are two details Nigerian applicants should note. The application asks you to confirm that you can travel internationally for company events 2 to 4 times a year, which means applying for visas. The form also says AI-generated or plagiarised answers will disqualify your application.

Protagona: AWS Cloud Engineer (published salary)

Protagona's AWS Cloud Engineer ad, as republished on Jobgether and checked on 27 October 2026, gave a range of $105,000 to $120,000 a year plus a performance bonus. The ad said pay depends on experience, skills and location. Jobgether labelled it "Remote from: Anywhere", but the country list behind the listing didn't match that label, so the ad doesn't clearly say whether Nigeria-based applicants qualify. That's typical of AWS ads on aggregators.

Reading "Remote from Anywhere" on aggregator sites

When we opened listings on an aggregator's remote cloud engineer jobs for Nigeria page, several "Anywhere" or "Africa" labels didn't hold up. One "Remote from Africa" cloud operations role said in its own description that it was based in South Africa, needed US Eastern hours and asked for Azure, not AWS. The lesson: an aggregator label is a lead, not proof. Before you write a cover letter, open the employer's own ad (on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or their careers page) and read the location line. Our planned guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents explains what to look for.

How much remote AWS engineers earn

No reliable public source reports what Nigeria-based AWS engineers earn on average, so treat any single figure you see online with caution. What we can give you is a set of benchmarks:

BenchmarkFigureWhat it tells you
US median, computer network architects (BLS, May 2025)$134,050 a yearUS local pay ceiling, not a Nigeria offer
Protagona AWS Cloud Engineer ad (Oct 2026)$105,000 to $120,000 a yearPublished range; location eligibility unclear

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't have a separate "cloud engineer" category. Computer network architects is the closest occupation it reports, and it projects 8% growth from 2025 to 2035. These are US figures for people living in the US.

Remote offers made to people in Nigeria are usually lower than US local pay, often by a wide margin. Companies that publish one global salary band are the exception. Even a fraction of that range is life-changing money at ₦1,362 to $1: $3,000 a month works out to about ₦4,086,000 (CBN rate, 23 October 2026), before any tax or transfer fees. What raises your offer is seniority, Kubernetes and Terraform depth, a Professional-level certificate backed by real projects, and how many working hours you share with the team.

For pay by role and naira conversions, see the WorkRemote salary guides.

Example (hypothetical): a six-month route to your first AWS application

This plan is for a backend developer in Lagos with about a year of experience and no cloud work yet. It's an example, not a promise of a job.

  1. Month 1: Learn IAM, VPC, EC2 and S3 hands-on in a personal AWS account. Set up a billing alarm on the first day.
  2. Month 2: Rebuild the same setup in Terraform. Store the code on GitHub with a README that explains your design choices.
  3. Month 3: Deploy a small app with a CI/CD pipeline (GitHub Actions to ECS or Lambda), plus CloudWatch alarms.
  4. Month 4: Sit Solutions Architect – Associate ($150). Book a test centre if your power supply is unreliable.
  5. Month 5: Add a second project: a cost report, a broken setup you fixed and wrote up, or an EKS cluster you can tear down and rebuild.
  6. Month 6: Rewrite your CV around the projects, then apply to a few roles each week whose live ads accept Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide applicants.

Tear down your resources after each session. A forgotten NAT gateway or EKS cluster can run up a dollar bill that costs you a month's savings.

Working remotely on AWS from Nigeria: the practical side

Time zones and on-call

AWS roles often come with on-call duty: being reachable to fix outages outside normal hours. Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. US Eastern time is 6 hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026 (5 hours in summer), so a US on-call shift can land in your night. European teams are a better fit: Central Europe is on the same time as Lagos in winter, and London is 1 hour behind. Ask about on-call rotation and pay in your first interview.

Power and connectivity

An engineer who disappears during an incident gets let go quickly. Before your first day, have an inverter or solar backup sized for your laptop and router, and two internet connections from different providers (for example, fibre or Starlink plus a MiFi on a different network). Mention your backup setup briefly in interviews, because employers who hire in Nigeria often ask about it.

Contracts and getting paid

Most foreign companies hire Nigeria-based AWS engineers in one of two ways. Either you're an independent contractor, or you're an employee of an employer of record (EOR) such as Deel or Remote. The difference affects your leave, notice period and tax. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employment in Nigeria explains the trade-offs, and the remote work tax guide covers what you owe under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

Common mistakes Nigerian AWS candidates make

  • Collecting certificates instead of building things. Three Associate badges with no GitHub projects look weaker than one badge with two documented builds.
  • Using exam dumps. Memorised dump answers fall apart in a technical interview. Using dumps also breaks AWS's exam agreement.
  • Leaving resources running. Free-tier limits are narrow. Billing alarms and the habit of tearing things down protect you.
  • Trusting the aggregator label. Always confirm eligibility on the employer's own ad.
  • Listing outdated names. Write "AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (formerly SysOps Administrator)" so recruiters searching for either name find you.
  • Falling for "AWS job plus training fee" offers. A real employer never asks you to pay for training, equipment or a certificate voucher before they hire you. Our guide to remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Which AWS certification is best for getting a remote job?

For most people it's AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate. It's the AWS certificate recruiters recognise most widely, and it covers the core services that cloud and DevOps ads ask for. If you come from IT support or system administration, CloudOps Engineer – Associate may match your experience better.

How much does an AWS exam cost in Nigeria?

As of October 2026, AWS charges $100 for Foundational exams, $150 for Associate and $300 for Professional or Specialty. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), that's roughly ₦136,200, ₦204,300 and ₦408,600. Your card provider may add foreign exchange charges on top.

Can I take AWS certification exams online from Nigeria?

Yes. AWS says every certification exam can be taken online with a Pearson VUE proctor, and English exams run around the clock. You need a stable connection and power for the whole exam, so many Nigerian candidates book a Pearson VUE test centre for longer exams.

Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner certificate enough to get a remote job?

Usually not for an engineering role. Cloud Practitioner proves you know the basic terms, and AWS says it needs no IT background. Employers hiring AWS engineers expect at least an Associate certificate plus projects you can demonstrate.

What happened to the AWS SysOps Administrator certification?

AWS renamed it. Candidates who pass the SOA-C03 exam now earn the AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate title, and people who already hold SysOps keep that name. Many job ads still say "SysOps", so include both names on your CV.

Do I need a degree to get a remote AWS job?

Not always, but some employers ask for one. Canonical's Cloud Field Engineer ad, for example, asks for a computer science degree or equivalent software engineering experience. Many cloud teams care more about certificates and proven projects, so check each ad.

How long do AWS certifications last?

Three years from the date you pass. After that you need to recertify. AWS also gives you a 50% discount voucher for your next exam when you pass one, which brings the cost of further certificates down.

Key takeaways

  • Remote AWS jobs open to Nigerians exist, but most want two or more years of hands-on work and Terraform skills, not just certificates.
  • As of October 2026, AWS exams cost $100 to $300 (about ₦136,200 to ₦408,600 at the CBN rate of 23 October 2026) and stay valid for three years.
  • Solutions Architect – Associate is the usual first engineering certificate. CloudOps Engineer – Associate replaced the old SysOps exam.
  • Every AWS exam can be taken online, but power and internet failures are a real risk, so a test centre is safer for long exams.
  • Aggregator labels such as "Remote from Anywhere" are often wrong, so confirm eligibility on the employer's own ad.
