The remote software developer jobs most open to Nigerians are backend, full stack, frontend, mobile, QA and DevOps roles. These are with employers who hire worldwide or across EMEA, with pan-African tech companies, and through talent networks such as Andela. The hard part isn't the job title. It's finding ads that let someone living in Nigeria apply at all.

This guide is for developers who want to choose a specialism with a clear head. It compares the main role families and shows how each differs in competition, hours and seniority. It also explains how to read the location line on a real job ad, using ads we checked on 27 October 2026. You'll see what US pay figures mean (and don't mean) for someone in Lagos or Enugu, and the Nigeria-specific setup employers quietly expect. Each role links to a fuller WorkRemote career guide, so treat this page as your map.

Quick answer

Nigerians can get remote software jobs as backend, full stack, frontend, mobile, QA, DevOps or cloud engineers. To do it, they need to apply to ads marked worldwide, EMEA or Africa, or that name Nigeria, or go through talent networks and freelance platforms. Mid-level and senior engineers find many more openings than juniors. Pay is usually below US local salaries, so treat US figures as a ceiling and always check the ad's location line before applying.

Which remote software developer jobs hire from Nigeria?

Every main software specialism has some remote roles that are open to people in Nigeria. They differ in how many openings exist, how crowded the applicant pool is, and how much proof an employer expects. The table below gives our general guidance. It is a summary of how these roles usually work, not a count of vacancies.

Role familyTypical entry pointWhat employers test
BackendJunior to midAPIs, databases, system design
Full stackMidShipping whole features alone
FrontendJunior to midReact/TypeScript, UI quality
MobileMidStore-published apps
QA and testJuniorTest plans, automation
DevOps, cloud, SREMid to seniorInfrastructure, on-call
WordPress, ShopifyJunior, often freelanceLive client sites

Backend developer

Backend developers build the APIs, databases and services behind an app, in languages such as Python, Go, Java, Node.js, Ruby or PHP. Remote employers like backend hires because the work is easy to judge from code and design discussions, and it usually needs less live overlap with designers than frontend work does. Read the backend developer career guide for the skills and path. If Python is your main language, the Python developer guide covers Django, FastAPI and data-heavy roles.

Full stack developer

A full stack developer works across the frontend and the backend, often in TypeScript with React and Node.js, or with Rails or Django. Startups with small teams hire full stack engineers because one person can ship a feature from database to button. That makes it a good role at small foreign startups. Expect them to want evidence that you have shipped whole products, not just tutorials. See the full stack developer guide.

Frontend developer

Frontend developers build what users see, usually with React, Next.js, Vue or Angular, plus TypeScript and CSS. This is where many Nigerian developers start, so the applicant pool is crowded. A portfolio with polished, accessible interfaces and clean Git history matters more here than in almost any other role. The frontend developer guide explains what separates hireable work from bootcamp projects. For the React job hunt specifically, see how to find remote React developer jobs.

Mobile developer (Android, iOS, cross-platform)

Mobile developers build apps in Kotlin for Android, Swift for iOS, or cross-platform with Flutter or React Native. Nigeria's fintech sector runs on Android, so local experience there carries over to foreign employers. Moniepoint's live ad, mentioned below, is an example. iOS work needs a Mac, which is a real cost to factor in. Start with the mobile developer overview, then the Android developer guide or the iOS developer guide. Flutter developers should also read finding remote Flutter jobs.

QA engineer and manual tester

QA engineers check that software works, using manual test cases and automation tools such as Playwright, Cypress or Selenium. Manual testing is one of the more realistic entry points with little experience. Automation pays better and is where you should aim within a year. See the QA engineer guide, the manual QA tester guide, and our planned piece on automation testing tools and skills.

DevOps, cloud and site reliability engineer

DevOps, cloud and site reliability engineers (SREs) run the infrastructure: AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines and monitoring. These roles pay well and are rarely entry level. Many involve on-call rotations, so ask how night alerts are shared across time zones before you accept. Read the DevOps engineer guide, the cloud engineer guide and the site reliability engineer guide. Certifications matter more here than elsewhere; see AWS engineer skills and certifications.

WordPress and Shopify developer

WordPress and Shopify developers build and customise websites and online shops for businesses. Much of this work is freelance or agency contract work rather than full-time employment, and it's a realistic way to earn foreign income early. See the WordPress developer guide and the Shopify developer guide.

Specialist routes: data, machine learning, blockchain and games

Some developers move into data engineering (pipelines, SQL, Spark), machine learning engineering, blockchain development or game development. These are smaller markets. Data and ML roles usually expect solid backend skills first. Blockchain hiring rises and falls with crypto markets, and job ads in that space need extra scam checks. Game studios hire remotely but compete for a small pool of jobs. The guides are here: data engineer, machine learning engineer, blockchain developer and game developer. For an overview across all titles, the general software engineer career guide is the place to start.

How these developer roles differ for someone based in Nigeria

Choosing a role is partly about what you enjoy and partly about where you can compete. Four things change from role to role.

  • Competition. Frontend and junior full stack roles attract the most applicants worldwide. Backend, QA automation and DevOps often have smaller pools for the same pay level.
  • Proof needed. Frontend and mobile need visible products. Backend needs code and design explanations. DevOps needs evidence you have run real infrastructure, which is hard to fake with side projects.
  • Time-zone pressure. Roles that pair closely with product managers and designers (frontend, full stack at a startup) usually need more live overlap. On-call DevOps roles can mean night alerts.
  • Equipment. iOS needs a Mac. Mobile testing benefits from real devices. Cloud work may need a paid sandbox account for practice.

How to read the location line on a remote developer job ad

"Remote" on a job ad does not mean "open to anyone, anywhere." The location line tells you who can apply, and there are four common kinds:

  1. Worldwide or "home based, worldwide": the employer says it hires from any country, though it may still exclude some. Nigeria is usually eligible unless stated otherwise.
  2. Regional (EMEA, Africa, "European time zones"): EMEA means Europe, the Middle East and Africa, so Nigeria is geographically inside it. Some EMEA ads still only hire in a few countries, though. Our planned explainer on what EMEA means in a job description goes further.
  3. Named countries: "Remote, United Kingdom; Remote, Poland" means you must live in, and usually have the right to work in, one of those countries.
  4. Right-to-work wording: "You must have the right to work in one of the countries we can hire from" means the employer has a fixed list. Check it before applying.

Real examples, checked 27 October 2026

These are examples of ad wording, not recommendations or endorsements. Ads close and change, so open the live ad before you apply.

  • Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) listed a Graduate Software Engineer role on its Greenhouse job board as "Home based - Worldwide" and "a Globally remote role". It is not open to every graduate: it asks for a STEM degree completed or expected in 2025 or 2026, confident code in a language such as Python, Rust, Go or Java, Linux experience, strong academic records, and the ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events.
  • GitLab is one of the best-known all-remote companies, yet on its Greenhouse board the engineering roles we saw were tied to named countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Poland, the United States and India. None of the roles we saw listed Nigeria. It shows that a famous remote employer does not automatically hire from Nigeria.
  • GiveDirectly advertised a fully remote Senior Software Engineer (Fundraising) role. It requires the right to work in one of the countries it can hire from, and it links to a list on a separate page that we did not verify for Nigeria. The ad published pay for three countries and says applicants elsewhere get a salary benchmark for their country.
  • Moniepoint, the Nigerian fintech, listed a Principal Mobile Engineer (POS Terminal) role on its Greenhouse board as "Remote, Lagos, Nigeria" alongside other remote locations. The ad itself asks for at least 8 years in system design and development in the POS terminal domain, plus strong native Android in Java or Kotlin. It's a reminder that African tech companies hire senior remote engineers too.

For a step-by-step method, see how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents and what "worldwide remote" means when applying from Nigeria.

Who hires Nigerian developers remotely

Remote developer work for Nigerians usually comes through five routes. Each comes with a different contract and a different hiring process.

RouteUsual arrangementWatch for
Foreign company, directContractor or EOR employeeLocation line, contract type
African tech companyEmployee or contractorNaira vs dollar pay
Talent networkContractor via the networkAssessments, matching wait
Freelance platformFreelancer per projectFees, unstable income
Agency or dev shopContractorRates, payment terms

Foreign companies hiring directly

Startups and scale-ups in the US, UK and Europe hire from Nigeria when their ads say worldwide or EMEA, or when they pay contractors through platforms such as Deel or Remote. You might be an independent contractor or an employee through an employer of record (EOR). These are different arrangements, with different benefits and tax duties; our guide on contractor versus EOR employee status explains them. For US startups specifically, see our planned guide on remote jobs with American startups.

Talent networks such as Andela

Talent networks vet developers and then match them with client companies. Andela's join page says it supports remote work in 135 countries. Its process has an English proficiency test, a technical assessment and a live technical interview, after which matchers shortlist profiles and clients choose whom to interview. Andela also says it does not offer work visas. Joining a network is not a job offer: you may wait to be matched, so keep applying elsewhere at the same time.

Freelance platforms, agencies and open source

Upwork, Toptal-style vetted networks and dev agencies give project work, which suits WordPress, Shopify and mobile developers building a track record. Open-source contributions are not a hiring route in themselves, but they give remote employers public proof of how you write code and work in reviews. Developers who compare freelance work with full-time remote employment usually find full-time is steadier and freelance is quicker to start.

What remote software developer jobs pay

US benchmark, not a Nigerian offer. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook gives a median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers and $104,300 for software quality assurance analysts and testers (May 2025). It projects 10% employment growth for software developers from 2025 to 2035. These are medians for people working in the United States.

A developer living in Nigeria will usually be offered less than US local pay. Many companies set salaries by location, and contractor rates for Africa-based engineers are often lower again. Some employers pay the same band globally, but they are the exception, so don't assume it.

Published bands help. GiveDirectly's ad (checked 27 October 2026) listed a base salary of $181,130 for the United States, £124,370 for the United Kingdom and $112,350 for Kenya. It also said it has a no-negotiation policy. The Kenya figure shows that an African location can still pay well, but also that location changes the number. Andela's join page showed one sample listing at $50 to $100 an hour, which is a single example, not a typical rate.

For role-by-role figures in dollars and naira, see the software engineer salary guide, or browse every remote salary guide for frontend, backend, full stack, mobile, Python and QA pay.

Example (hypothetical): turning a dollar offer into naira

Example (hypothetical): a mid-level backend developer in Ibadan is offered a contractor rate of $2,500 a month. At ₦1,362 to $1 (the CBN NFEM weighted average on 23 October 2026), that is about ₦3,405,000 a month before any fees or tax. To get the real figure, subtract withdrawal or conversion fees, the cost of power and internet backup, and personal income tax. As a contractor, there's no paid leave or pension unless you fund it yourself. Our guide to calculating take-home pay from a remote job walks through each line.

How to choose your best-fit developer role: a quick checklist

Answer these honestly before you commit months of study to a stack.

  1. What can you show today? Pick the role your existing work best proves. A developer with two live Android apps should apply for mobile, not switch to frontend.
  2. How senior are you? Juniors have the best odds with manual QA, WordPress/Shopify freelancing, junior backend roles at African companies, or graduate programmes such as Canonical's. Mid-level developers can target backend, full stack and mobile with foreign employers.
  3. Which hours can you work? A UK or European team overlaps easily with Lagos. A US West Coast team means evenings in Nigeria (see the time-zone section below).
  4. What does your equipment allow? No Mac rules out iOS for now. A low-RAM laptop makes Docker and Android emulators painful.
  5. Where is the demand in ads that accept Nigeria? Before you choose, search remote tech listings on WorkRemote and note which stacks keep appearing in ads you can actually apply for.

How to get hired as a remote developer from Nigeria

  1. Pick one role and one stack. "Backend, Python/Django, PostgreSQL" gets hired faster than "full stack, MERN, Python, Flutter and a bit of Rust".
  2. Build two or three serious projects. They should be deployed, documented and tested, with a readable README. Our planned guide on building a software portfolio that attracts remote employers covers what reviewers check.
  3. Make your remote readiness visible. Remote employers worry about written communication. Write clear pull request descriptions and a short technical blog post or two.
  4. Filter ads by location before anything else. Skip ads that name countries you don't live in. Applying anyway wastes your time and theirs.
  5. Tailor each application. Match your CV to the stack in the ad, lead with shipped results, and keep it to two pages. See how to write a CV for international remote jobs.
  6. Prepare for take-home tests and live coding. Most developer processes include one or both. Read our planned guide on take-home coding tests and practise explaining your trade-offs out loud.
  7. Confirm the contract before you accept. Check whether you'll be a contractor or an EOR employee, which currency you'll be paid in, how often, and through which platform.

If you're still looking for your first developer job, read how to become a junior software developer without a job alongside this list.

Nigeria-specific setup remote employers expect

Remote employers rarely ask about power and internet in the interview, but an outage during a deploy or a client call damages trust quickly.

  • Power: budget for an inverter with batteries, solar, or generator backup that can carry your laptop, router and a fan through a full workday. Your DisCo tariff band affects how many hours of grid supply you'll actually get.
  • Internet: keep two connections, for example a fibre or 4G/5G router plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on another network. Starlink is available in Nigeria; check the current price before you buy.
  • Time zones (as of October 2026): Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. London is on GMT now, so Lagos is one hour ahead until British Summer Time returns. Central Europe is on the same time as Lagos in winter. US Eastern is 5 hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026 and 6 hours behind after that. US Pacific is 8 to 9 hours behind, so a 10am Pacific stand-up falls at 6pm or 7pm in Lagos.
  • Getting paid: foreign employers pay through Deel, Remote, Payoneer, Wise or direct transfer to a domiciliary account. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options and fees.
  • Tax: remote income is taxable for Nigerian residents. See tax for remote workers under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
  • Identity documents: have your NIN, BVN, international passport and proof of address ready. EOR providers and payment apps ask for them during onboarding, after you have a genuine offer.

Common mistakes and red flags in remote developer job hunting

  • Treating "remote" as "worldwide". Read the location line first, every time.
  • Chasing every new framework. Depth in one stack beats a CV listing fifteen technologies.
  • Assuming US pay. Benchmarks from the BLS or US salary sites describe US workers, not offers to Nigeria-based contractors.
  • Paying for a job. Genuine employers and talent networks don't charge you to apply, to get an interview, or for equipment you must buy from them.
  • Fake "developer tests" that install malware. Be wary of a "recruiter" who sends a repository to run on your own machine before any real interview, especially for crypto or Web3 roles. Run unknown code only in a disposable virtual machine, or decline.
  • Handing over documents too early. Share your passport, BVN or bank details only after you have verified the company and received a written offer.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian work remotely as a software developer for a foreign company?

Yes, when the employer or client accepts people living in Nigeria and the ad doesn't require residence or work authorisation somewhere else. Most of these arrangements are contractor agreements or employment through an employer of record. Confirm eligibility on the employer's own job ad before applying.

Which programming language is best for getting a remote job from Nigeria?

There is no single best language. JavaScript/TypeScript, Python and Java/Kotlin appear across many remote ads, and Go is common in infrastructure roles. Choose based on the role you want: TypeScript for frontend and full stack, Python or Go for backend, Kotlin for Android.

Are there remote software developer jobs for beginners in Nigeria?

Yes, but they're harder to find than mid-level roles. The realistic routes are manual QA, freelance WordPress or Shopify work, junior roles at African tech companies, and graduate programmes that hire worldwide, such as Canonical's listing checked in October 2026. Our guide to remote jobs with no experience covers more entry routes.

How much do remote software developers in Nigeria earn?

It varies widely by seniority, employer and contract type, and it is usually below US pay. The BLS median for US software developers was $135,980 a year (May 2025), but that is a US benchmark. Some employers publish location-based bands, as GiveDirectly did, which give a more honest picture.

Is Andela still a good route for Nigerian developers?

Andela is one option, not a guarantee. As of October 2026 its join page says it supports remote work in 135 countries and uses an English test, a technical assessment and a live interview. After that, clients choose whom to interview. Apply directly to employers at the same time while you wait to be matched.

What does "EMEA" mean on a remote developer job ad?

EMEA stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, so Nigeria is geographically included. Some EMEA ads still only hire in a few named countries, though. Check the full location line and any country list, or ask the recruiter in your first message.

Do I need a computer science degree to get a remote developer job?

Usually not for experienced developers: shipped work and technical interviews count for more. Some graduate programmes do require a degree, such as Canonical's role, which asked for a STEM degree completed in 2025 or 2026. Our planned guide on remote IT jobs without a computer science degree covers this further.

Do I need a visa to work remotely for a foreign company from Nigeria?

Generally no, if you live and work in Nigeria, because you're not entering the employer's country to work. A visa question only arises if you plan to work from abroad. In that case, see our digital nomad visa guides.

Key takeaways

  • Backend, full stack, frontend, mobile, QA and DevOps/cloud roles all have remote openings that Nigerians can apply for. They differ in competition, proof needed and hours.
  • Eligibility depends on the ad's location line, not the word "remote". Even well-known remote companies such as GitLab listed engineering roles only in named countries when checked on 27 October 2026.
  • Juniors have the best odds in QA, CMS freelancing, African tech companies and worldwide graduate programmes. Mid-level and senior engineers have far more options.
  • US pay data from the BLS is a benchmark. Offers to Nigeria-based developers are usually lower, and published location-based bands are the most honest guide.
  • Reliable power, two internet connections and a clear plan for time zones and payments are part of being hireable remotely from Nigeria.
