How to become a remote Shopify developer from Nigeria
To become a remote Shopify developer from Nigeria, learn HTML, CSS and JavaScript well, then Shopify's Liquid templating language, Online Store 2.0 themes (JSON templates, sections and blocks), metafields and the Shopify CLI. Join the Shopify Partner Program, which is free and gives you unlimited test stores, and build two or three stores that look and convert like real brands.
After that, the path splits. Theme developers customise stores for merchants and agencies. App developers build Shopify apps with the React Router template, the GraphQL Admin API and checkout extensions. App work is harder and usually pays more; theme work is easier to find.

What a remote shopify developer does
A Shopify developer builds and changes what a merchant's customers see and what the merchant manages. On the theme side: new sections the merchant can drag around in the theme editor, product pages with custom options, faster collection pages, and fixes when an app conflicts with the theme. On the app side: private or public apps that sync inventory, add custom discounts with Shopify Functions, extend checkout, or connect the store to an ERP or warehouse.
The job is close to the money. A bug on the cart page loses sales the same hour, and a faster product page can lift conversion. Merchants and agencies judge you on whether the store sells, so the best Shopify developers learn some e-commerce basics: conversion rate, average order value, and what a good product page looks like.
A day in the role
- Build a new theme section with a schema so the merchant can edit it in the theme editor
- Add a size guide to product pages using metafields and metaobjects
- Fix a cart drawer that breaks when a subscription app adds its own script
- Run Theme Check and Lighthouse on a theme before handing it to a client
- Write a Shopify Function for a "buy two, get 10% off" discount the built-in tools cannot handle
- Query orders through the GraphQL Admin API to sync them to a client's warehouse system
- Plan redirects and data import for a store moving from WooCommerce to Shopify
Skills you need
Core skills
- Liquid
Shopify's templating language: objects, tags and filters. Every Shopify theme is built with it, and interviews often include a Liquid task.
- Online Store 2.0 theme architecture
JSON templates that list sections (up to 25 per template, 50 blocks per section), section schemas, blocks, snippets and the theme editor. Merchants expect to edit everything without calling you.
- HTML, CSS and JavaScript
Most theme work is front-end work. Vanilla JavaScript for cart updates and variant pickers is still common, along with web components in newer themes.
- Metafields and metaobjects
How you add custom data (size charts, ingredients, FAQs) without hacks. Clients ask for this constantly.
- Shopify CLI and Git workflow
Local theme development, previews, pushing to development themes and GitHub integration, instead of editing code in the admin.
- The Ajax Cart API and Storefront behaviour
Adding to cart, updating quantities and cart drawers without page reloads.
- GraphQL Admin API
For apps and integrations: products, orders, inventory, webhooks and query cost limits.
- Checkout extensibility and Shopify Functions
checkout.liquid is no longer supported for the information, shipping and payment steps, so checkout changes now go through UI extensions and Functions.
- Performance
Image sizing with Shopify's image filters, lazy loading, limiting app scripts and keeping Core Web Vitals healthy. Many store rescues start here.
Soft skills
- Commercial sense
Talking about conversion, average order value and launch dates makes merchants and agency owners trust you with bigger budgets.
- Clear scoping
"Make it like Gymshark's site" needs turning into a list of sections and features with a price, in writing.
- Calm under launch pressure
Black Friday and product drops do not move. Agencies want developers who plan ahead and stay reachable.

Getting hired from Nigeria
Build stores that look like real brands. Use your free Partner test stores to build two or three complete stores: a skincare brand with ingredient metafields, a fashion store with a size guide and colour swatches, a food brand with subscriptions. Record a two-minute walkthrough of each, show the theme editor working, and include Lighthouse scores. Put the theme code on GitHub.
Where the work comes from. E-commerce agencies in the US, UK, Europe and Australia hire freelance and contract Shopify developers to handle overflow, often on retainers. Brands hire directly through Upwork, Shopify-focused job boards and referrals. Shopify's Partner Directory lets merchants find partners, with tiers (Select, Plus, Premier, Platinum) based on track record. Shopify says it paid partners $1.3 billion in 2025 across apps, themes, store builds and referrals.
What clients test. Usually a paid or unpaid task: build a section from a design, fix a cart bug, or add a feature with metafields. Agencies also check that you work in Git with the Shopify CLI, not by editing the live theme in the admin.
Pay and setup. Clients pay through Payoneer, Grey, Deel, Upwork or bank transfer. Big sales days such as Black Friday are on US and UK time, so you need reliable power and internet at odd hours.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Editing the live theme in the Shopify admin with no backup or version control
- Hard-coding content that merchants should be able to change in the theme editor
- Adding app after app to solve problems, until the store loads ten scripts and crawls
- Testing only on desktop, when a large share of shoppers browse and buy on their phones
- Still promising checkout.liquid customisations, which are no longer supported for the main checkout steps
- Underpricing builds because the first client was a friend, then never raising rates
Questions people ask
Can I become a Shopify developer from Nigeria?
Yes. Joining the Shopify Partner Program is free and gives you unlimited test stores, and most Shopify clients are abroad anyway. What matters is a strong portfolio of stores and good communication with merchants and agencies.
Do I need to know coding to be a Shopify developer?
Yes. Setting up a store with apps and a theme is store building, not development. Developer work needs Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and app work needs React and an API.
Is Shopify development better than WordPress development?
They suit different clients. Shopify work is mostly for e-commerce brands and is closer to sales; WordPress covers all kinds of sites. In UK job data we checked, Shopify jobs had a slightly higher median (£40,000) than WordPress jobs (£37,500).
Can I sell Shopify themes or apps from Nigeria?
Shopify lets partners earn from apps and themes, and partners work from many countries. Getting a theme into the Theme Store or an app approved takes a lot of work, so most developers start with client projects.
How do Shopify developers find clients abroad?
Through agencies that need extra developers, Upwork, Shopify-focused communities and job boards, referrals, and eventually the Partner Directory. A portfolio of real-looking stores with walkthrough videos helps most.

Related career guides
- WordPress Developer
A WordPress developer builds and maintains websites on WordPress: custom themes, plugins, Gutenberg blocks and WooCommerce shops, using PHP, JavaScript and React. It is one of the easiest development careers to start remotely from Nigeria because agencies and small businesses abroad need it constantly, but much of the work pays less than general software engineering.
- Frontend Developer
A frontend developer builds the part of a website or web app people see and click, mostly with HTML, CSS, JavaScript or TypeScript and React. It is one of the most common remote tech jobs open to Nigerians, but it is also the most crowded, so you need polished, fast, accessible work to get noticed.
- Full Stack Developer
A full stack developer builds both the user interface and the server side of a product, often React or Next.js on the front and Node.js, Python, Laravel or Rails behind it with a SQL database. Startups hiring remotely like full stack developers because one person can ship a whole feature, and many Nigerians land remote work this way after a few years at an agency or startup.
- Digital Marketing Specialist
A digital marketing specialist runs a company's paid ads, email, social media and analytics to bring in leads and sales. You can do it fully remotely from Nigeria, mostly for small foreign companies and agencies, but they hire on campaign results, not certificates.
