How to become a remote full stack developer from Nigeria
A remote full stack developer from Nigeria needs to ship a feature end to end without hand-holding: the database table, the API, the React screen, the tests and the deployment. The most hired combination right now is TypeScript, React or Next.js, Node.js and PostgreSQL; Python with Django, Laravel and Rails also have steady demand.
The catch with "full stack" is that many people are shallow on both ends. Remote startups do hire generalists, but they still test you properly on JavaScript, SQL and API design. Aim to be strong on one side and competent on the other, and say which in interviews.

What a remote full stack developer does
A full stack developer takes a feature from idea to production. For a "team invites" feature, that means adding an invitations table and migration, writing the API endpoints, sending the email through a queue, building the invite form and the acceptance page in React, writing tests and deploying it.
At early-stage startups you might also set up the CI pipeline, choose the hosting and fix the marketing site. At bigger companies "full stack" usually means you work across a product area's frontend and backend, with specialists handling infrastructure and design.
A day in the role
- Add a database migration and an API endpoint for a new feature, then build the React screen that uses it
- Fix a bug that turns out to be a timezone mismatch between the frontend and the server
- Review a teammate's pull request touching both the API and the UI
- Set up a preview deployment on Vercel so the product manager can test before merging
- Write a Playwright test that covers signing up and creating a first project
- Talk through scope with a founder in a short call, then write the agreed plan in the ticket
- Investigate a slow page by checking both the network tab and the database query behind it
Skills you need
Core skills
- JavaScript and TypeScript
Using one language on both sides is the main reason the TypeScript stack is popular with startups. Know async code, types for API contracts and error handling.
- React with Next.js
Components, state, effects, forms, and Next.js routing, server components and data fetching. Most full stack job ads name them.
- A server framework
Express or NestJS on Node.js, Django or FastAPI on Python, Laravel on PHP, or Rails on Ruby. Know routing, middleware, validation and background jobs.
- PostgreSQL and data modelling
Designing tables and relationships, indexes, transactions and migrations. Full stack developers often own the schema at small companies.
- Authentication end to end
Secure cookies, sessions or tokens, OAuth sign-in with Google, password reset flows and role-based access, across both the UI and the API.
- Testing at both layers
Unit and integration tests for the API, component tests for the UI, and a few end-to-end tests with Playwright for the main user flows.
- Deployment and CI
Shipping to Vercel, Render, Fly.io or AWS, managing environment variables, and running tests on every pull request with GitHub Actions.
- HTTP and browser behaviour
CORS, cookies and SameSite rules, caching headers and how the browser and server talk. Many full stack bugs live between the two.
Soft skills
- Prioritising
You will be pulled between frontend polish, backend fixes and urgent requests. Remote founders value people who ask what matters most this week and stick to it.
- Product sense
Small teams expect you to suggest simpler ways to solve the user's problem, not just build the ticket as written.
- Clear written updates
Your work touches many parts of the product. Short notes on what changed and what to test save everyone time.
Tools you'll use
Next.js
React framework with routing, server rendering and API routes
Node.js with Express or NestJS
Common backend pairing for TypeScript teams
PostgreSQL with Prisma or Drizzle
Typical database and ORM setup at startups
Tailwind CSS
Fast styling that many startup codebases use
Supabase or Firebase
Hosted database and auth that some early-stage teams start with
Docker
Running the database and other services locally
Vercel, Render or Fly.io
Hosting with free or cheap tiers for portfolio projects
Playwright
End-to-end tests that cover the UI and API together
Stripe, Paystack or Flutterwave
Payment integrations come up in a lot of full stack work
Sentry
Error tracking for both browser and server code

Career path
How remote full stack developers usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.
- Entry
Junior full stack developer
0-2 years
Common at Nigerian agencies and early startups, often with more frontend than backend at first.
- Mid-level
Full stack developer
2-5 years
Ships features end to end; the stage where remote startup contracts open up.
- Senior
Senior full stack engineer
5+ years
Owns product areas and makes architecture calls on both sides.
- Lead
Tech lead or founding engineer
7+ years
Often the first or second engineer at a startup, setting the whole stack.
Sideways moves
Backend or frontend specialist · 3+ years
Many full stack developers specialise later for higher pay at larger companies.
Product manager · 4+ years
For those who enjoy scoping and talking to users more than coding.
Getting hired from Nigeria
Show complete products. One or two apps that people actually use beat a pile of demos. A booking system for a salon, a school results portal, an invoicing tool for freelancers: anything with login, roles, payments or email, a real database and a live URL. Put a short video walkthrough at the top of the README so a busy reviewer can see it in two minutes.
Be clear about your strong side. When asked, say something like "I am strongest on React and TypeScript, and comfortable building Node.js APIs and PostgreSQL schemas." Honest framing gets you placed in the right interview loop.
Where the jobs are. Early-stage startups in the UK, Europe and the US post most full stack roles. On Arc's Nigeria board in October 2026, a mid-level full-stack role open to Nigeria listed a salary of $40,000-$60,000. Toptal and Lemon.io also place full stack developers with startups; Lemon.io had 518 active contracts with Nigerian developers in Q3 2026. Freelance work for overseas small businesses through Upwork or referrals is another common first step.
Contracts, pay and setup. Most remote full stack roles in Nigeria are contracts paid through Deel, Remote.com, Payoneer or Grey. Startups expect you to be reachable in their working hours, so set up backup power and a second internet connection before you start, not after the first outage.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Calling yourself full stack after one MERN tutorial; interviewers will test SQL, security and testing as well
- A portfolio app with no authentication, no tests and a database password in the repo
- Spreading yourself across five frameworks instead of mastering one stack
- Taking on a startup's whole product alone without agreeing priorities, then being blamed for everything that is late
- Building with only Firebase or Supabase and never learning how an API and a SQL database work underneath
- Underquoting freelance projects by forgetting hosting, maintenance and the endless "small changes"
Questions people ask
Is full stack development good for remote jobs in Nigeria?
Yes. Startups hiring remotely like developers who can ship a whole feature. You need real depth on at least one side, because companies still test both frontend and backend skills.
Should I learn MERN or Next.js?
Learn React and Node.js properly, then Next.js. Most new startup codebases use Next.js with PostgreSQL rather than the classic MERN stack with MongoDB, though MongoDB is still common.
Can a full stack developer work as a freelancer from Nigeria?
Yes, and many do, building sites and apps for small businesses abroad. Freelance pay is less steady than a contract with one company, so many people freelance while applying for longer contracts.
How long does it take to become a full stack developer?
Usually twelve to eighteen months of steady study to be job-ready, longer than frontend alone. Plan on another one to two years of paid work before most remote companies hire you.
Is Laravel or Django good for full stack remote jobs?
Both have steady demand. Laravel is popular with agencies and small businesses; Django is common at Python-based startups. TypeScript stacks have more startup openings overall.

- Frontend Developer
A frontend developer builds the part of a website or web app people see and click, mostly with HTML, CSS, JavaScript or TypeScript and React. It is one of the most common remote tech jobs open to Nigerians, but it is also the most crowded, so you need polished, fast, accessible work to get noticed.
- Backend Developer
A backend developer builds the servers, APIs, databases and background jobs that apps run on, typically in Node.js, Python, Go, Java or C#. Nigerian backend developers are hired remotely by foreign companies, especially those with fintech or payments experience, though most remote roles want two or more years of production work.
- Software Engineer
A software engineer designs, writes, tests and maintains the code behind products, and it is one of the remote jobs Nigerians most often get with foreign companies. Entry-level remote roles are rare, so most people get their first two years of experience locally or through freelance work before landing a dollar-paid contract.
- Python Developer
A Python developer writes software in Python, most often web backends with Django or FastAPI, but also automation scripts, data pipelines and the tooling around AI models. Remote companies hire Nigerian Python developers for all of these, and Python skills also open dollar-paid AI training and evaluation work.
