Remote automation testing jobs are open to people in Nigeria. In October 2026, several worldwide-eligible ads asked for the same core stack: TypeScript or Python, Playwright (or Cypress or Selenium), API testing, CI/CD pipelines and three to five years of QA experience. The hard part is not where you live. Most remote automation roles want someone who has already tested real software, and they check that through a coding assessment.
This guide covers what remote automation testers do day to day and which tools live ads asked for. It explains which programming language to pick, how to find remote API testing jobs, what the work pays and how to move from manual testing into automation. It also covers the Nigerian side: working US or European hours from Lagos, the laptop you need and how to read "open to all countries" in a job ad.
Quick answer
Remote automation testing jobs pay you to write code that tests software automatically: browser tests, mobile tests, API tests and checks that run in CI/CD pipelines. In October 2026, worldwide-eligible ads mostly asked for TypeScript or JavaScript, Playwright, REST API testing, GitHub Actions or Jenkins and three or more years of experience. Nigerians can apply where the ad accepts all countries. Junior automation roles are rare, so most people start in manual QA or API testing.
What a remote automation tester actually does
An automation tester writes and maintains code that clicks through an app, calls its APIs and confirms the results are correct. The code runs every time a developer changes something. A manual tester checks software by hand. An automation tester builds the system that does the checking.
The job goes by several titles. Search for all of them, because companies are inconsistent:
- QA Automation Engineer, the most common title in remote ads
- SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test), usually a more coding-heavy role
- Test Automation Engineer
- Quality Engineer or QA Engineer, which sometimes mixes manual and automated work
- Automation QA Lead, a senior role that owns the test strategy
A normal week might involve writing end-to-end tests for a new checkout flow and fixing "flaky" tests (tests that pass and fail at random). You'd also add API tests for a new endpoint, review a developer's pull request for testability, and look into why the overnight pipeline failed. Remote teams rely heavily on written bug reports and pull-request comments, so clear writing matters as much as code.
If you want the wider QA career path (manual testing, courses, first roles), our QA engineer career guide covers it. This page sticks to the automation tools and skills.
What live remote automation testing ads asked for (October 2026)
We read three remote QA automation ads on Himalayas, a remote job board, in October 2026. Each was listed as open to candidates from all countries. These are examples, not recommendations. Ads close and eligibility changes, so check the live listing before you apply.
| Role (company) | Main tools asked for | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Automation QA Engineer, QVAC (Tether) | TypeScript, Playwright, WebdriverIO, Appium, GitHub Actions | 4+ years |
| QA Automation Engineer (Resourceful Talent Group) | TypeScript, Playwright, API, load testing, Docker, Jenkins | 4+ years |
| QA Engineer, Remote locations (Halborn) | Playwright, Cypress, Selenium or pytest, REST or GraphQL APIs | 3 to 5 years |
What the three ads said, as checked in October 2026:
- Tether's Automation QA Engineer (QVAC) ad is full-time and lists hiring time zones as worldwide. It asks for Playwright for desktop or web, WebdriverIO and Appium for mobile, testing on real iOS and Android devices, and experience using AI tools in QA. It was posted on 15 October 2026 with an "apply before" date of 14 December 2026.
- Resourceful Talent Group's QA Automation Engineer (Playwright + TypeScript) ad is from a staffing and recruiting firm, so you'd be placed with a client. It asks for API, performance and load testing alongside Playwright, and says you must be available to work during US Eastern (EST) hours.
- Halborn's QA Engineer (Remote locations) ad is mid-level. It accepts TypeScript, JavaScript or Python and lists k6, Locust or JMeter and Burp Suite as bonus skills. It asks for daily use of AI coding assistants. The ad also says Halborn can't sponsor work visas, which doesn't affect you if you work from Nigeria.
Three patterns stand out. Playwright appeared in all three. Every ad expected CI/CD experience. And none of them was a junior role. Himalayas' list of remote QA automation jobs for Nigeria did include an automation QA internship and a junior QA and automation role when we checked, but most listings were mid-level or senior. Some were restricted to other regions: one listing said "LATAM only".
The automation testing tools to learn, by layer
Think of automation work in layers, starting at the screen and ending in the pipeline. You don't need every tool. You need one strong tool per layer, plus enough knowledge of the others to recognise them in an ad.
| Layer | Tools you'll see in ads | Learn first |
|---|---|---|
| Web UI (browser) | Playwright, Cypress, Selenium | Playwright |
| Mobile apps | Appium, WebdriverIO, Espresso, XCUITest | Appium, if mobile |
| API | Postman, Playwright request, REST Assured, pytest | Postman, then code |
| Performance and load | k6, JMeter, Locust | k6 |
| CI/CD and environment | GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Docker | GitHub Actions |
| Tracking and process | Jira, TestRail, Git | Git and Jira |
Web UI automation: Playwright, Cypress and Selenium
Playwright is Microsoft's open-source browser automation framework. Its official documentation says it supports Chromium, WebKit and Firefox on Windows, Linux and macOS. You can write tests in Node.js (JavaScript or TypeScript), Python, Java or .NET. It also emulates Chrome on Android and Mobile Safari. In the ads above, the language that went with Playwright was usually TypeScript.
Cypress is a JavaScript and TypeScript tool popular with frontend teams. It's easy to start with, but it only works with JavaScript, so it ties you to that ecosystem.
Selenium is the oldest of the three. It supports many languages and is still common in banks, large enterprises and older codebases, often with Java and TestNG. If you're aiming at Java-heavy companies, learn Selenium. If you're aiming at startups, Playwright is the better bet.
Mobile automation: Appium and WebdriverIO
Mobile testing roles ask for Appium (cross-platform) and sometimes WebdriverIO, a JavaScript framework that can drive Appium. Native Android teams may use Espresso, and iOS teams XCUITest. The catch for Nigerian testers is hardware. Serious iOS automation usually needs a Mac, and some ads, like Tether's, want testing on real devices. If you can't afford that yet, focus on web and API testing first.
Performance and load testing
k6 (scripts written in JavaScript), JMeter (Java-based, with a graphical interface) and Locust (Python) check how a system behaves under heavy traffic. These skills show up more often as "nice to have" than as requirements. They also help when your CV is up against candidates who only know UI automation.
CI/CD, Docker and Git
CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery) means tests run automatically whenever code changes. All three ads asked for it. The common tools are GitHub Actions, GitLab CI and Jenkins, with Docker for consistent test environments. If your tests only run on your laptop, you're not ready for a remote automation job. You need to show that they run in a pipeline and report results.
Which programming language should you learn for automation testing?
Learn TypeScript (or JavaScript) first if you have no strong preference. It works with Playwright, Cypress and WebdriverIO, and it was the main language in the October 2026 ads above. Choose Python if you also want data or backend work, since pytest and Playwright for Python are well established. Choose Java if you're targeting enterprise and banking clients that use Selenium, TestNG and REST Assured.
Whatever you pick, go beyond recording clicks. Interviewers check whether you can:
- structure tests using the Page Object Model or a similar pattern
- write reusable helpers instead of copying code
- handle waits and asynchronous behaviour without hard-coded sleeps
- read a stack trace and debug a failing test
- use Git branches and pull requests properly
How to find remote API testing jobs
API testing checks the parts of an app you can't see: the endpoints that a web or mobile app calls to log in, fetch data or make a payment. API testers send requests, check the responses, status codes and error handling, and confirm the data is correct. Because API tests don't depend on a browser, they run faster and break less often than UI tests. Many teams want more of them.
Standalone "API Tester" job titles are uncommon. Most remote API testing work sits inside QA automation and SDET roles. Two of the three ads above named REST or API testing directly, and the Halborn ad also mentioned GraphQL. Finding API testing jobs is mostly about searching the right terms and reading the requirements carefully.
Search terms that surface API testing work
- "API automation" and "API test automation"
- "backend QA" or "backend test engineer"
- "SDET" combined with "REST" or "microservices"
- "Postman" or "REST Assured", with "remote"
- "contract testing" (testing the agreed format between two services)
- "integration testing" with "QA"
Run these searches on remote job boards and on company career pages. Fintech, payments and B2B software companies (where the product is mostly APIs) are the most likely to want strong API testers. Our planned guide on finding remote jobs on company career pages explains how to search applicant tracking systems directly.
API testing tools and skills
- Postman: build, send and save API requests, and write basic test scripts. It's a good starting point, but it isn't enough on its own for most remote roles.
- Coded API tests: Playwright's API testing guide shows how its request feature can test a server API, prepare data before a UI test and check server-side results after browser actions. In Python, pytest with the requests library does the same job. In Java, REST Assured is standard.
- Core knowledge: HTTP methods, status codes, headers, JSON, authentication (API keys, OAuth tokens) and reading API documentation such as OpenAPI (Swagger) specs.
- Data checks: basic SQL, so you can confirm that an API call actually changed the database.
Example (hypothetical): you test a public demo API that has a list of products and an endpoint to create one. A strong portfolio repository would have four parts. A Postman collection covers the main endpoints. A pytest or Playwright suite checks a successful create, a missing required field, an invalid token and a non-existent product ID. A GitHub Actions workflow runs the suite on every push. A README explains what's covered and what isn't. That shows more than a certificate does.
Skills beyond the tools
Tools get you shortlisted. These skills get you hired:
- Test design: deciding what to test, including edge cases, negative paths and boundaries, and what not to automate.
- Bug reporting in writing: steps to reproduce, expected and actual results, environment, screenshots or logs. On a remote team, your Jira ticket is often the only conversation.
- Manual and exploratory testing: the Tether ad asked for hands-on manual and exploratory experience alongside automation.
- Using AI responsibly: both the Tether and Halborn ads mentioned AI tools. Expect questions on how you use AI coding assistants and how you check what they produce.
- Working without supervision: flagging blockers early, writing short daily updates and handing over cleanly across time zones.
How much do remote automation testers earn?
There's no reliable public figure for what Nigeria-based automation testers earn from foreign companies, and none of the three ads above published a salary. Use US data as a ceiling, not a target.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) gives a median annual wage of $104,300 for software quality assurance analysts and testers in May 2025. That covers US-based workers, manual and automated. The same page projects 6% employment growth for the occupation between 2025 and 2035. A Nigeria-based contractor hired by a foreign company is usually paid well below US local pay, often at a rate set for the region rather than the US market.
What moves your rate up:
- Coding depth: SDET-style roles that build frameworks pay more than roles that maintain existing scripts.
- API, performance and security testing on top of UI automation.
- Domain knowledge: fintech, payments, betting and crypto ads were common in October 2026, and regulated products value careful testers.
- US-hours availability: some ads require overlap with EST.
- Employment type: contractor and employee-of-record (EOR) arrangements differ on benefits and tax. See our guide on contractor versus employee status from Nigeria.
For manual testing pay, see our manual QA tester salary page.
A realistic route from manual testing to remote automation
The three ads above wanted three or more years of experience. The fastest honest route is to get a testing job first, even a local or manual one, and add automation while you work. Here's a sequence that works for most people:
- Learn testing basics: test cases, bug reports, test levels and types. The ISTQB Foundation syllabus is a solid structure (see the section on certification below).
- Pick one language (TypeScript is the default) and learn enough to write functions, loops, async code and use npm packages.
- Build a Playwright suite against a public demo website. Use page objects, at least 15 meaningful tests and no hard-coded waits.
- Add API tests with Postman, then in code, against a public API.
- Wire everything into GitHub Actions so the tests run on every push and publish a report.
- Add one extra: a k6 load test, an Appium test on an Android emulator, or a Docker setup.
- Apply to manual-plus-automation and junior roles while practising timed take-home tasks. Our planned guide to remote technical assessments covers how those tests work.
- Move up once you have 12 to 24 months of real automation experience, which is when the mid-level worldwide ads become realistic.
How you present all this matters. Our planned guide on building a software portfolio for remote employers covers what to put in your GitHub profile and README files.
Is ISTQB certification worth it for remote automation jobs?
ISTQB helps but rarely decides who gets hired. None of the three ads above required it, and all of them focused on tools and experience. It's more useful for enterprise, banking and agency roles, and for career changers who need proof that they understand testing theory.
If you take it, AT*SQA's ISTQB exam registration page for Nigeria lists the Foundation Level exam at $229 as of October 2026. That's about ₦312,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN rate, 23 October 2026). You can sit the exam online with remote proctoring or at a test centre. The listed centres are in Lagos (Ikeja, Lekki, Surulere, Ikorodu), Ibadan, Kaduna, Otukpo, Warri, Asaba and Port Harcourt. The voucher is valid for 12 months. The fee is charged in dollars, so your bank may add foreign transaction charges. Buy only after you've studied the syllabus, and spend money on a project before a certificate if your budget is tight.
Working remotely as an automation tester from Nigeria
Time zones
Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. Here's what common team locations mean for your working day in Lagos:
| Team location | Their 9am to 5pm in Lagos time |
|---|---|
| London, winter (GMT) | 10am to 6pm |
| Central Europe, winter (CET) | 9am to 5pm |
| US Eastern, winter (EST, from 1 Nov 2026) | 3pm to 11pm |
| US Eastern, summer (EDT) | 2pm to 10pm |
An ad that says "available during EST hours", like the Resourceful Talent Group listing, can mean evenings until late. Ask whether partial overlap is enough. Our planned guide on remote jobs that accept African time zones covers this in more detail.
Equipment and power
Automation is heavier than manual testing. Running browsers, Docker and an Android emulator at the same time needs a laptop with at least 16GB of RAM and an SSD. Playwright's documentation lists macOS 14 or later, Windows 11 or recent Debian or Ubuntu versions, so very old machines may not run the current release. iOS testing realistically needs a Mac.
Pipelines run in the cloud, but you still need to be online to watch them, debug them and join stand-ups. Plan for an inverter or solar backup, plus two internet options, such as a MiFi device and a phone hotspot on a different network.
Reading eligibility correctly
"Open to all countries" on a job board is a good sign, but check the employer's own application page too. Look for country lists, a required time-zone overlap or a requirement for existing work authorisation somewhere else. Our planned guide on what "worldwide remote" means when applying from Nigeria explains the common wording.
Getting paid
Most foreign companies pay Nigeria-based testers as contractors, through Deel, Remote, Payoneer or direct transfers. Compare the options and fees in our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria, and register your income properly. Our remote work tax guide covers how that works.
Common mistakes and red flags
- Learning five tools shallowly. One framework learned well, with API tests and CI, beats a CV that lists Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Katalon and TestCafe with nothing to show for any of them.
- A portfolio with no pipeline. Reviewers look for a green GitHub Actions badge and a README.
- Applying only to senior worldwide ads. Apply to mixed manual-and-automation roles too, and track what responds.
- Ignoring the time-zone line. An EST-hours requirement is a real condition of the job, not a formality.
- Paying to get a "QA job". Some fake recruiters charge for "training", "certification" or "equipment" before an offer. A real employer doesn't charge you to apply or start. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.
- Odd listings. Be careful with ads that don't name the company or that contradict themselves (for example, "remote" in the title and "hybrid" in the details), or that quote pay in a currency that makes no sense for the region. Ask questions before you share documents.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a remote automation testing job from Nigeria?
Yes, if the ad accepts applicants in Nigeria and you meet the experience bar. In October 2026, worldwide-eligible QA automation ads from Tether, Halborn and Resourceful Talent Group were listed on Himalayas. All of them wanted three or more years of experience, so most people start in manual or junior QA.
Which automation testing tool should I learn first?
Playwright with TypeScript is the safest first choice for remote work. It appeared in all three worldwide ads we checked in October 2026, and its official documentation supports JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java and .NET. Learn Selenium with Java instead if you're targeting enterprise or banking clients.
Do I need coding skills for automation testing jobs?
Yes. Automation testing means writing code, and remote employers usually test that with a take-home task or a live exercise. You don't need to be a full software developer, but you need solid basics in one language, Git and debugging.
Are there remote API testing jobs for beginners?
They're rare as standalone roles. API testing usually sits inside QA automation or backend QA jobs. A beginner's best move is a public portfolio of API tests (Postman, then pytest or Playwright) running in CI, used to apply for junior QA roles that mention API work.
Is ISTQB required for remote QA automation jobs?
No. None of the three remote automation ads we read in October 2026 required it. As of October 2026, the Foundation Level costs $229 through AT*SQA, and Nigerians can sit it online or at test centres in several cities. It's most useful for enterprise roles and career changers.
How much do remote automation testers earn?
US-based software QA analysts and testers earned a median of $104,300 a year in May 2025, according to the BLS. Nigeria-based contractors working for foreign companies are usually paid well below that figure. Pay rises with coding depth, API and performance skills, and time-zone overlap.
Can I do automation testing remotely without a laptop?
Not realistically. You need to run browsers, test frameworks and often Docker or an emulator, which needs a laptop with enough memory. A phone can help with mobile exploratory testing, but it can't replace a development machine.
Key takeaways
- In October 2026, remote automation testing ads open to Nigeria centred on TypeScript, Playwright, API testing and CI/CD, with three or more years of experience.
- Learn one tool per layer: Playwright for web, Postman plus coded tests for APIs, GitHub Actions for pipelines.
- Remote API testing jobs mostly sit inside QA automation and SDET roles, so search for "API automation", "backend QA" and "REST" alongside QA titles.
- US pay data ($104,300 BLS median, May 2025) is a ceiling, not what a Nigeria-based contractor should expect.
- ISTQB Foundation ($229 as of October 2026) is optional. A public test portfolio running in CI does more for you.
- Check time-zone and eligibility lines on the employer's own page before applying, and never pay to get a job.
Next steps
