Remote manual QA tester salary in Nigeria

A Nigeria-based QA tester working remotely for a foreign company earns a median base salary of about $30,900 a year, according to payroll provider Plane, with most people between about $10,500 and $79,500. Plane shows exactly the same figures for QA engineers, so it groups manual and automation testers together. Expect a manual-only tester to sit in the lower half of that range.

For comparison, the US median for software QA analysts and testers was $104,300 in May 2025 (BLS), and UK test analyst job ads have a median of £42,500.

Where these figures come from

Entry
Plane's 10th percentile ($10,457) to median ($30,898) for remote QA testers based in Nigeria, rounded. Most manual-only roles and first contracts with African, Asian or Eastern European companies fall here.
Senior
Plane's median ($30,898) to 90th percentile ($79,474) for Nigeria, rounded. Plane reports identical numbers for QA engineers, so the top of this band mostly reflects testers who also automate, lead QA or work for US and European firms. Plane does not publish its sample size or method.

How that compares

Reference points from other markets. Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually below US and UK local pay.

  • US median, software QA analysts and testers (BLS, May 2025) (bls.gov)$104,300 a year
  • US average base, tester job ads (Indeed) (indeed.com)$28.75 an hour
  • UK median, test analyst job ads (ITJobsWatch) (itjobswatch.co.uk)£42,500 a year
  • UK median, manual tester job ads (ITJobsWatch, few ads) (itjobswatch.co.uk)£32,000 a year

What affects your pay

Manual or automation. This is the biggest factor. In the UK, ITJobsWatch shows a median of £32,000 for manual tester ads against £42,500 for test analyst ads, which usually ask for broader skills. The manual tester figure comes from only a handful of ads, so treat it as a rough signal, but the direction matches what we see in remote ads.

Employee, contractor or crowdtester. A salaried or monthly contract role pays a steady figure. Crowdtesting pays per accepted bug (uTest, Test IO) or per hour of assigned testing (Testlio), so two testers on the same platform can earn very different amounts in the same month.

Domain. Testing payments, banking, health or betting products pays better than testing simple marketing sites, because the cost of a missed bug is higher and the rules are stricter.

Devices and languages. On crowdtesting platforms, owning devices that clients want (recent iPhones especially; Test IO says iOS bugs usually pay more) and speaking a second language for localisation work both get you invited to more cycles.

Where the employer is based. US and UK companies pay more than most African or Asian ones, but they also test harder and expect more automation.

Negotiating your offer

Ask for the budget first: "What range has been set for this role?" Many remote employers will tell you, and it stops you naming a figure far below what they planned to pay.

If you have to name a number, give a monthly dollar figure. Plane's Nigerian median works out to about $2,575 a month, but remember it includes automation testers. For a manual role, aim near it only if the job also involves API testing, test planning or a regulated product; otherwise expect to start lower and use the first review to move up.

Automation skills are your best negotiating tool. Even basic Playwright or Postman test scripts let you argue for QA engineer pay rather than tester pay. Get the currency, payment date, payment method and who pays transfer fees in writing.

Questions people ask

How much does a remote QA tester earn in Nigeria?

About $30,900 a year at the median, based on Plane's figures for Nigeria-based remote QA testers, or roughly $2,575 a month before fees. Plane groups manual and automation testers together, so manual-only testers usually earn less than that median.

How much can I make on uTest or Test IO?

There's no reliable public figure. Both pay per accepted bug, with the amount depending on how valuable or severe the bug is and, on Test IO, the device. Earnings vary widely month to month, so treat it as extra income until you have a steady record.

Do automation testers earn more than manual testers?

Yes, in most markets. UK job ads for broader test analyst roles have a median of £42,500 against £32,000 for the few manual tester ads on ITJobsWatch, and remote employers pay more for testers who can automate regression checks.

Is a remote testing job better paid than a local one?

Usually yes. Even entry-level remote pay in dollars tends to beat local tester salaries, but you're often a contractor with no pension or health cover, and you pay for your own devices, power and internet.
