To find a remote job with an American startup from Nigeria, search the boards where US startups post first: Wellfound and Y Combinator's Work at a Startup. Then open each ad and check its location tag, because many of these jobs say "Remote (US)" and you can't take them from Lagos. The roles you can apply for are tagged "Everywhere", "Worldwide", "Remote (Nigeria)" or a list of countries that includes Nigeria.
US startups are worth the effort. They post pay ranges more often than big companies, founders often read applications themselves, and a small team will sometimes hire on skill instead of pedigree. The trade-off is that most of their remote roles are open to US residents only. Without a filter, you'll spend weeks applying to jobs that were never open to you.
This guide shows where US startups post jobs, how to read their location tags, real examples we checked in October 2026, what the pay means in naira, and how to approach founders without spamming them.
Quick answer
Use Wellfound (filter for remote and read each listing's location tag) and Y Combinator's job board (create a free profile, then search by role and by Lagos). Apply only where the ad says Everywhere, Worldwide, Nigeria or Africa, or lists Nigeria by name. Expect contractor arrangements, US time-zone overlap and pay below US salaries. Check every listing on the company's own job page before you apply.
What counts as an American startup, and why they hire differently
An American startup is a young, fast-growing company founded or headquartered in the US, usually funded by venture capital or an accelerator such as Y Combinator (YC). Clipboard is one example. It's a YC company from the Winter 2017 batch, headquartered in San Francisco, and its YC company profile describes a remote-first team. Its own careers page says the company is "remote first, high trust, and written".
Startups hire differently from big US employers in a few ways that matter to you:
- Founders and early staff often screen applications themselves. A sharp, specific message can get read. It won't get read at a company that runs every CV through a large applicant-tracking funnel.
- Many startups publish pay. On Wellfound and YC's board, most listings show a salary range, and some show an equity range too.
- Hiring abroad usually means contractor status. A small US startup rarely has a legal entity in Nigeria. It will either pay you as an independent contractor or hire you through an employer-of-record (EOR) service. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employee arrangements explains the difference.
- Remote-first doesn't mean open to anywhere. Many remote-first US startups hire only US residents because of payroll, tax, benefits or customer-data rules. Clipboard's own YC job list shows this: as of October 2026, almost every remote role on it was tagged "Remote (US)".
Some YC-backed companies build products for African markets and hire in Lagos. They're funded through a US accelerator but operate mainly in Africa. They're a real route in, and we cover them below. If African startups are your main target, see our planned guide to working with African startups.
Who can apply: how to read location tags on startup job ads
The location tag decides everything, so read it before the title, the pay or the perks. These are the tags we saw on startup boards in October 2026, and what each means for someone living in Nigeria.
| Tag on the ad | Can you apply from Nigeria? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Remote (US) or Remote, U.S. | No | US residence or work authorisation needed |
| Remote only • Everywhere | Usually yes | Time-zone hours, contractor terms |
| Remote (Nigeria) or Remote (NG) | Yes | Whether pay is in dollars or naira |
| Remote with a country list incl. NG | Yes | Your country is named in the list |
| Remote • Europe or EMEA | Sometimes | Whether Africa is meant, or only the UK and EU |
| Remote • Canada, US and Canada | No | Residence in those countries |
| Remote (no country given) | Unclear | Read the full ad, then ask |
Two of these tags need a closer look:
- EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) includes Nigeria on paper, but many companies use it to mean "UK and EU time zones". Bitwarden, a US password-manager company, is a good example. As of October 2026, its careers page listed EMEA sales roles, but the locations on those roles were London or "Remote, UK". Our planned explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job ad goes further.
- "Remote" with no country isn't a yes. Ask the recruiter or founder directly before you spend an evening on a take-home task.
For the US-only wording specifically, see how to interpret US-only remote job restrictions. For "worldwide", see what worldwide remote means when applying from Nigeria.
Where American startups post remote jobs
Wellfound (formerly AngelList Talent)
Wellfound is the biggest board built only for startup jobs. When we opened its remote jobs page in October 2026, it showed more than 12,000 remote results. Every listing we saw displayed a salary range, mostly in US dollars, and some also showed an equity range (for example 0.005% to 0.025%). Some companies carry a label such as "Responds within a few days", which Wellfound says is based on past data.
How to use it from Nigeria:
- Create a candidate profile with a clear headline (role plus main tool, for example "Customer support specialist, Zendesk and Intercom").
- Search for your role with remote selected, then read the tag on each card. "Remote only • Everywhere" is the one you want. Skip "Remote • Canada" and similar.
- Open Wellfound's Nigeria location page as a second search. It mixes Lagos office jobs (some paid in naira) with remote roles tagged for Nigeria, so expect to sift.
- Save roles and apply through the platform's Apply button. Keep your note short and specific to the company.
One warning: the tag on Wellfound can differ from the company's own careers page. The examples section below shows this happening.
Y Combinator's Work at a Startup
YC runs a job board for its own portfolio companies. Public pages at ycombinator.com/jobs show a sample of roles. Clicking Apply takes you to a sign-up for Work at a Startup, and YC's remote jobs page says "Creating a profile is free and founders reach out to you." The public page also says more jobs appear once you have a profile.
Be realistic about what you'll find. When we opened YC's remote page in October 2026, most visible listings were US-only or open in specific countries such as Colombia, the Philippines, Brazil, India and Singapore. None of the visible ones was tagged worldwide or Africa. YC's Lagos jobs page is more useful to Nigerians, because it lists YC companies hiring in or remotely from Nigeria.
How to use it:
- Create a free profile and fill in every field, especially your location, your skills and a short "what I'm looking for" line. Founders search these profiles.
- Browse by role, then check the Lagos page and the remote page each week.
- Open each company's YC profile. It shows the batch, team size, headquarters and every open job with its location text, which lets you check eligibility quickly.
Startup careers pages (Ashby, Greenhouse, Lever)
Many startups post first on their own careers page. That page is often hosted on an applicant-tracking system such as Ashby (jobs.ashbyhq.com/company), Greenhouse or Lever. These pages are the final authority on eligibility. Once a company on Wellfound or YC interests you, go to its careers page and confirm the location before applying. Our planned guide on finding jobs on company career pages explains how to search these systems directly.
Examples we checked in October 2026
These are startup listings we opened on 27 October 2026. They aren't an endorsement and they aren't a promise the roles are still open. Startups fill and close roles quickly, so check the live ad.
| Startup and source | Role | Location text | Posted pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topship (YC W22), YC Lagos page | Product Operations Manager | Lagos / Remote (Nigeria) | $1.5K to $2K |
| Curacel (YC W22), YC Lagos page | Enterprise Account Executive | Remote (Lagos, Nairobi, Cairo, Casablanca, Cape Town) | $1.5K to $2K a month |
| Prospa (YC W21), YC Lagos page | Marketing Manager | Lagos / Remote (Lagos) | Not shown |
| Prospa (YC W21), YC Lagos page | Marketing Intern (contract) | Lagos / Remote (NG) | Not shown |
| Clipboard (YC W17), Wellfound Nigeria page | Customer Experience Specialist | Remote • Lagos | $11k to $20k |
| Retink, Wellfound Nigeria page | Product Designer (UX-focused) | Remote only • Everywhere | Equity only, 0.1% to 1.0% |
What these examples teach:
- Topship, Curacel and Prospa are YC-backed but built for African markets. They're the most open to Nigerian applicants, and their pay reflects that.
- Clipboard is a fully US company whose listings disagree with each other. Wellfound showed a Customer Experience Specialist role tagged "Remote • Lagos". Clipboard's own YC job list showed a role with the same title tagged "Remote (US)". These may be two separate openings for two regions, which is common. Apply to the one whose location includes you, and confirm it through Clipboard's hiring hub.
- Equity-only roles exist. Retink's listing showed an equity range and no salary. An equity-only role means no regular pay. Treat it as a side project or a gamble, not a job that pays your rent.
What US startup pay means in naira
Posted startup pay is gross, before any fees or tax, and the period isn't always stated. YC sometimes writes "/ monthly". When it doesn't, read the full ad to find out whether the figure is monthly or yearly.
These conversions use ₦1,362 to $1, the CBN NFEM weighted average for 23 October 2026. Your actual rate depends on how you withdraw.
| Posted pay | Monthly in dollars | Monthly in naira (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| $1,500 a month | $1,500 | ₦2,043,000 |
| $2,000 a month | $2,000 | ₦2,724,000 |
| $11,000 a year | about $917 | about ₦1,249,000 |
| $20,000 a year | about $1,667 | about ₦2,270,000 |
For contrast, YC's remote page showed US-based roles at roughly $80K to $250K a year. Those salaries are for people living in the US. A startup hiring from Nigeria will almost always pay less than its US salary band, often on a separate range for each region. Don't assume the US figure applies to you. If it isn't clear, ask which band applies to your location.
Startups that offer equity to people outside the US often do so as stock options, which vest over time and may only be worth something if the company is sold or goes public. Ask whether contractors abroad can receive options at all, how vesting works and what happens if you leave. Our planned guide to remote jobs offering equity or stock options covers this in more detail.
A weekly routine for finding US startup roles
Startup boards reward people who check often and move quickly. This routine takes two or three hours a week.
- Monday: search. Run the same saved searches on Wellfound (remote, your role) and YC (your role, then the Lagos and remote pages). Write down every role tagged Everywhere, Worldwide, Nigeria, Africa or a country list that names Nigeria.
- Monday: verify. For each shortlisted role, open the company's own careers page or YC profile. Confirm the location text, whether it's a contract or full-time role, and the posted pay. Drop anything that turns out to be US-only.
- Tuesday: research. Spend 15 minutes per company. Read the product page, try the product if it's free, and read the founders' recent posts on LinkedIn or X.
- Tuesday and Wednesday: apply. Send fewer, better applications. Write each note to fit the company and point to one piece of proof (a portfolio link, a GitHub repo, a support-ticket writing sample, a Loom video).
- Thursday: follow up. If a week has passed, send one short follow-up through the platform or by email. One, not three.
- Friday: improve. Check which applications got replies and change your headline, CV or samples based on what worked.
Keep a simple tracker (a spreadsheet works) with these columns: company, board, location tag, date applied, contact, status. When you're applying to 10 or more startups a week, you'll lose track of who said what without it.
How to approach a US startup founder
At an early-stage startup, the founder is often the hiring manager. A short direct message can work, but only for a role you're actually eligible for and only with proof attached.
Example (hypothetical): You find a YC startup selling scheduling software to US dental clinics. It has a role tagged "Remote only • Everywhere" for a customer support specialist. Your message on Work at a Startup or LinkedIn might read:
"Hi Sarah, I'm applying for the Support Specialist role (tagged Everywhere). I'm based in Lagos and can work 2pm to 10pm WAT, which covers 9am to 5pm US Eastern from November. I've answered over 40 tickets a day in Zendesk for a UK e-commerce brand for the past year. I used your free trial and wrote two sample replies to common onboarding questions, linked here. Happy to do a paid test task."
Why it works: it confirms you're eligible, states your hours in the founder's time zone, gives a number from real experience, and shows you used the product. Don't send the same message to 50 founders. They talk to each other, and copy-paste is obvious. For more templates, see our planned guide to writing a cold email to a remote hiring manager.
Time zones, contracts and getting paid
Time zones. Lagos is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. US Eastern is 5 hours behind Lagos in summer and 6 hours behind from 1 November 2026. US Pacific is 8 or 9 hours behind. A San Francisco startup working 9am to 5pm Pacific in winter is working 6pm to 2am in Lagos. Most startups ask for 3 to 4 hours of overlap, not a full night shift, but support roles may need full US hours. Ask before you accept, and plan your backup power (inverter or solar) and a second internet connection around those hours.
Contracts. Most US startups hire Nigeria-based people as independent contractors, sometimes through platforms like Deel or Remote. Read the contract for payment dates, notice period and who owns your work. Whether a Nigerian can legally work for a US company from Nigeria is covered in our planned article can a Nigerian work remotely for a US company. The short answer is that a contractor arrangement doesn't need a US visa, because you aren't working in the US.
Getting paid and tax. Startups pay contractors through Deel, Remote, Wise, Payoneer or direct bank transfer. Compare withdrawal fees and naira rates in our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria. Your dollar income is still taxable in Nigeria. See tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
Red flags on startup listings
Startup boards attract fake listings, as every job board does. These warning signs are common:
- The "startup" can't be traced. No product, no website beyond a landing page, no founders you can find on LinkedIn, and no YC or investor profile.
- The location tag says one thing and the message says another. An ad tagged "Remote (US)" followed by a "recruiter" who says Nigeria is fine.
- Any request for money. No real startup charges you for training, equipment, onboarding or a "certification" before you start.
- A request for bank details, NIN or BVN before an offer. These belong in onboarding through a known payroll platform, not in a first-week chat on Telegram.
- Equity offered instead of unpaid "trial" months. Equity-only roles are legitimate when the company is open about them. Unpaid trial work is not.

Frequently asked questions
Can Nigerians apply for Y Combinator startup jobs?
Yes, when the specific job is open to people in Nigeria. YC's Lagos jobs page listed Nigeria-eligible roles at Topship, Curacel and Prospa as of October 2026, but most roles on YC's remote page were US-only or limited to other named countries. Creating a Work at a Startup profile is free.
Is Wellfound good for Nigerians looking for remote startup jobs?
Yes, as long as you read each listing's location tag. Wellfound showed over 12,000 remote listings with salary ranges in October 2026, but many are limited to the US, Canada or Europe. Search for listings tagged "Remote only • Everywhere" and check Wellfound's Nigeria location page.
Do US startups pay Nigerians the same as US employees?
Usually not. US startups often set pay by region, and roles open to Nigeria tend to sit well below US salaries. The roles we checked in October 2026 showed about $917 to $2,000 a month for Nigeria-eligible work, against $80K to $250K a year for many US-only roles. Always ask which pay band applies to your location.
Will a US startup hire me as an employee or a contractor?
Most will hire you as an independent contractor, because few US startups have a legal entity in Nigeria. Some use an employer-of-record service so that you're employed through a local entity. The arrangement affects your benefits, tax and notice rights, so confirm it in writing.
What does "Remote (US)" mean on a startup job ad?
It means you must live in the US, and usually be authorised to work there, to be hired. You can't take the job from Nigeria, even if the work is fully remote. Skip these ads unless the company has a separate listing for your region.
Should I accept an equity-only role at a US startup?
Only if you can afford to work without regular pay. Equity is valuable only if the startup is sold or goes public, and many startups never are. If you consider one, get the equity percentage, vesting schedule and contractor terms in writing.
How do I check whether a US startup is real?
Look for a working product, founders with a traceable history, and a listing on the company's own careers page or YC profile. Be suspicious of any request for payment or for sensitive documents before an offer. A real startup will also be happy to answer questions about its product and team.
Key takeaways
- Wellfound and YC's Work at a Startup are the main boards for US startup jobs, and creating a YC profile is free.
- The location tag decides whether you can apply. "Everywhere", "Worldwide" and any tag naming Nigeria are open to you. "Remote (US)" is not.
- The same startup can post one job title with different eligibility on different boards, so confirm on the company's own page.
- YC-backed startups focused on Africa, such as Topship, Curacel and Prospa, were the most open to Nigerian applicants in October 2026.
- Expect contractor terms, regional pay below US salaries and a few hours of US time-zone overlap each day.
