Remote software engineer salary for Nigerians
A mid-level software engineer in Nigeria working remotely on contract earns roughly $44,000 to $50,000 a year, and seniors earn about $62,000 to $73,000, based on Lemon.io's active contracts with Nigerian developers in Q3 2026. That is well above local Nigerian pay and well below what the same job pays in the US or UK.
We do not show an entry-level range. We could not find a credible source for remote junior pay from Nigeria, and in practice most juniors start on local salaries.

Remote software engineer pay by level
Yearly pay in US dollars for remote software engineer roles open to people outside the US and UK, then the same figures in naira a month.
| Level | Dollars a year | Naira a month |
|---|---|---|
| Mid | $44,000 to $50,000 | ₦4,994,000 to ₦5,675,000 |
| Senior | $62,000 to $73,000 | ₦7,037,000 to ₦8,286,000 |
Naira at ₦1,362 to $1, 23 October 2026 (CBN NFEM weighted average), before tax and transfer fees, rounded to the nearest ₦1,000. The rate moves, so treat naira figures as a guide.
Where these figures come from
- Mid
- Lemon.io rates on active contracts with Nigerian developers, 2-5 years' experience, $21-$24 an hour (median $23), annualised at 2,080 hours. Q3 2026 snapshot.
- Senior
- Lemon.io Nigeria contracts, senior (5-8 years): $30-$35 an hour, annualised at 2,080 hours (Q3 2026). Strong seniors (8+ years) earn $35-$40 an hour, about $73,000-$83,000, but they make up only 3% of the 518 Nigerian contracts.
How that compares
Reference points from other markets. Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually below US and UK local pay.
- US median, software developers (BLS, May 2025) (bls.gov)$135,980 a year
- UK median, permanent software engineer ads (IT Jobs Watch, 6 months to Oct 2026) (itjobswatch.co.uk)£70,000 a year
- Nigeria median, all levels, self-reported (Levels.fyi, 35 reports) (levels.fyi)₦7,133,835 a year
- Average expected salary of Nigerian developers on Arc (self-reported) (arc.dev)$53,658 a year
What affects your pay
Who pays you matters more than your title. US-funded startups and product companies pay the most; agencies and staffing firms that resell your time pay the least, because they keep a margin. The same engineer can be offered $25,000 by one and $70,000 by another.
Contractor or employee. Most Nigerians are hired as contractors through Deel, Remote.com or directly. Contract rates look higher than salaries, but you cover your own leave, pension, health insurance and equipment, and there is usually no notice period.
Stack and specialism. On Arc, Nigerian back-end developers report slightly higher expected pay ($54,975) than front-end developers ($50,582). Engineers with cloud, data or payments experience tend to sit at the top of the range.
Overlap. Roles that need you on US Pacific hours pay more partly because the hours are hard. Decide what nights you can sustain before you negotiate.
Local comparison. Levels.fyi's self-reported Nigerian data puts the median at about ₦7.1m a year across all levels, with the 25th percentile at ₦3m and the 90th at ₦24.5m. Treat it as rough: it is based on 35 reports.
Negotiating your offer
Ask for their budget first: "What range has been approved for this role?" Many remote companies set bands by region, and the first number spoken tends to anchor the deal.
Quote in dollars and annual terms, not naira and monthly. If they ask for an hourly rate, multiply by 2,080 in your head so you know what you are agreeing to.
Get the payment details in writing: currency, platform, which day of the month, who pays transfer fees and what happens with public holidays. A $2,000 difference in salary matters less than being paid late every month.
If they cannot move on rate, ask about a paid equipment allowance (a laptop or a solar setup), a review after six months, or a contract that converts to full-time.
Questions people ask
How much does a remote software engineer earn in Nigeria?
On Lemon.io's Q3 2026 data, Nigerian developers with 2-5 years' experience earn about $44,000-$50,000 a year on contract, and those with 5-8 years about $62,000-$73,000. Pay varies a lot by employer, so treat these as typical, not fixed.
Do Nigerian remote engineers earn as much as US engineers?
No. The US median for software developers was $135,980 in May 2025. Companies hiring from Africa usually pay a fraction of that, though even the lower end is several times local Nigerian pay.
Are remote developer salaries paid in dollars?
Usually, yes. Most contracts are priced in US dollars, and some UK companies pay in pounds. You then withdraw to a naira or domiciliary account through Deel, Payoneer, Grey or a bank transfer.
What do junior remote developers in Nigeria earn?
We do not have a credible figure. Remote junior roles open to Nigeria are rare and pay varies widely, so we would rather not guess. Most juniors start on local salaries and move to remote work after two years.

Salaries for related roles
- Backend Developer
A backend developer builds the servers, APIs, databases and background jobs that apps run on, typically in Node.js, Python, Go, Java or C#. Nigerian backend developers are hired remotely by foreign companies, especially those with fintech or payments experience, though most remote roles want two or more years of production work.
- Frontend Developer
A frontend developer builds the part of a website or web app people see and click, mostly with HTML, CSS, JavaScript or TypeScript and React. It is one of the most common remote tech jobs open to Nigerians, but it is also the most crowded, so you need polished, fast, accessible work to get noticed.
- Full Stack Developer
A full stack developer builds both the user interface and the server side of a product, often React or Next.js on the front and Node.js, Python, Laravel or Rails behind it with a SQL database. Startups hiring remotely like full stack developers because one person can ship a whole feature, and many Nigerians land remote work this way after a few years at an agency or startup.
