Where these figures come from
- Mid
- Lemon.io active contracts with Nigerian developers, 2-5 years' experience, $21-$24 an hour annualised at 2,080 hours (Q3 2026). Covers all developer specialisms; Arc's self-reported Nigerian back-end average of $54,975 suggests backend sits at or above the top of it.
- Senior
- Lemon.io Nigeria contracts, senior (5-8 years): $30-$35 an hour, annualised at 2,080 hours (Q3 2026). Strong seniors (8+ years) earn $35-$40 an hour, about $73,000-$83,000, but they make up only 3% of the 518 Nigerian contracts.
How that compares
Reference points from other markets. Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually below US and UK local pay.
- US median, software developers (BLS, May 2025) (bls.gov)$135,980 a year
- UK median, permanent backend developer ads (IT Jobs Watch, 6 months to Oct 2026) (itjobswatch.co.uk)£70,000 a year
- Average expected salary, Nigerian back-end developers on Arc (self-reported) (arc.dev)$54,975 a year
- Nigeria median, software engineers, all levels (Levels.fyi, self-reported) (levels.fyi)₦7,133,835 a year
What affects your pay
Domain. Payments, banking and marketplaces pay more for backend developers because mistakes cost money. Nigerian fintech experience is a real selling point here.
Language. Go, Java and Kotlin roles at larger companies tend to pay more than PHP or plain Express work at agencies. Python roles linked to AI and data pipelines are in demand.
Remote-first UK employers pay more. On IT Jobs Watch, UK backend ads that mention working from home had a median of £85,000 in the six months to October 2026, against £70,000 for all backend ads. Those employers are also the most used to contractors abroad.
On-call and hours. Roles with on-call duty or heavy US overlap should pay more. If they do not, ask.
Contract terms. A contractor rate has to cover your own leave, health insurance, pension, laptop, inverter and data. Compare offers on what you keep, not the headline number.
Negotiating your offer
Bring evidence of impact: "I made our payment webhook handler idempotent and duplicate settlements dropped to zero" is worth more than a list of frameworks.
Ask for the band before naming a number, and quote annual dollars. If the employer is US-based and the role needs US overlap or on-call, use that to argue for the top of the range.
Get payment terms in writing: currency, platform, payment date, who covers transfer fees, and notice period. A contract with 30 days' notice on both sides is worth having.

Salaries for related roles
- Software Engineer
A software engineer designs, writes, tests and maintains the code behind products, and it is one of the remote jobs Nigerians most often get with foreign companies. Entry-level remote roles are rare, so most people get their first two years of experience locally or through freelance work before landing a dollar-paid contract.
- Full Stack Developer
A full stack developer builds both the user interface and the server side of a product, often React or Next.js on the front and Node.js, Python, Laravel or Rails behind it with a SQL database. Startups hiring remotely like full stack developers because one person can ship a whole feature, and many Nigerians land remote work this way after a few years at an agency or startup.
- Python Developer
A Python developer writes software in Python, most often web backends with Django or FastAPI, but also automation scripts, data pipelines and the tooling around AI models. Remote companies hire Nigerian Python developers for all of these, and Python skills also open dollar-paid AI training and evaluation work.
