How to become a remote data engineer from Nigeria

To become a remote data engineer you need very strong SQL, solid Python, one cloud platform (AWS, Google Cloud or Azure) and hands-on experience with the tools that move and model data: an orchestrator like Airflow, dbt, a warehouse like BigQuery or Snowflake, and some Spark. Then you prove it with one end-to-end pipeline project that a reviewer can run.

Few people start as data engineers. The usual route is backend developer, data analyst or analytics engineer first, then a move across. If you already write Python or SQL for a living, you are closer than you think.

What a remote data engineer does

Data engineers make sure the right data arrives in the right place, on time and correct. A typical pipeline pulls transactions from a PostgreSQL database, events from the mobile app and records from tools like Stripe, Paystack, HubSpot or Salesforce, loads them into a warehouse (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift or Databricks), then transforms them into clean tables that power dashboards and models.

The job is part software engineering, part plumbing and part detective work. You write code, but you also spend a lot of time asking why yesterday's orders table has 3,000 fewer rows than usual, or why the warehouse bill doubled.

The title varies. At some companies a "data engineer" mostly writes SQL models in dbt (closer to an analytics engineer). At others it means running Spark jobs on terabytes of data and Kafka streams. Read the job ad's tool list carefully.

A day in the role

  1. Build or fix ingestion jobs that pull data from APIs, databases and files into cloud storage and the warehouse
  2. Write and review dbt models that turn raw tables into clean fact and dimension tables analysts can trust
  3. Watch the orchestrator (Airflow, Dagster or Prefect) for failed runs and re-run or backfill them safely
  4. Add data quality tests for nulls, duplicates, row counts and freshness so problems are caught before a manager sees a wrong number
  5. Tune slow or expensive queries by partitioning, clustering and cutting the data each job scans
  6. Agree with analysts and data scientists what tables they need, then document them so nobody has to ask twice

Skills you need

Core skills

Advanced SQL

Window functions, CTEs, MERGE statements, incremental loads and reading query plans. Data engineering interviews push SQL harder than any other role.

Python

For ingestion scripts, API calls, file handling and Airflow DAGs. Write it like an engineer: functions, tests, logging, error handling and packaging.

Data modelling

Star schemas, fact and dimension tables, slowly changing dimensions (type 2 especially) and when to denormalise. Bad models make every downstream query painful.

Orchestration

Airflow is still the most common in job ads; Dagster and Prefect are growing. Know DAGs, scheduling, retries, backfills and why tasks must be idempotent.

dbt

The standard tool for SQL transformations in the warehouse, with tests, documentation and lineage built in. Many remote job ads list it.

A cloud platform

Pick one: AWS (S3, Glue, Redshift, Lambda), Google Cloud (Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Dataflow) or Azure (Data Lake Storage, Synapse, Data Factory). Learn IAM and cost basics, not just the services.

Spark

Needed once data outgrows a single machine. Understand partitions, shuffles, joins and skew in PySpark; Databricks is where most companies run it.

Docker, Git and CI

Pipelines are code. Containerising jobs, reviewing pull requests and running tests in GitHub Actions are expected at most remote companies.

Streaming basics

Kafka topics, partitions and consumer groups, and the difference between at-least-once and exactly-once delivery. Not every role needs it, but fintechs and logistics companies often do.

Soft skills

Ownership of failures

Pipelines break at night. Teams keep the engineers who notice first, fix calmly and write up what happened.

Translating needs into tables

Analysts say "I need customer data". You need to find out the grain, the history and the refresh time they actually require.

Clear documentation

In a remote team, a good README and table descriptions save hours of Slack questions across time zones.

Tools you'll use

  • PostgreSQL

Free to run locally or in Docker, and the source database at many startups

  • BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift or Databricks

The warehouses and lakehouses most job ads name; Databricks has a free edition for learning

  • Apache Airflow

The most common orchestrator; Dagster, Prefect and Kestra are alternatives

  • dbt

SQL transformations with tests and documentation; dbt Core is open source

  • Apache Spark / PySpark

For large-scale batch processing, usually on Databricks, EMR or Dataproc

  • Apache Kafka

Event streaming; managed versions include Confluent Cloud and Amazon MSK

  • Fivetran, Airbyte or dlt

Ingestion tools that copy data from SaaS apps and databases into the warehouse

  • Docker and Terraform

Package jobs and create cloud resources as code

  • Great Expectations or dbt tests

    Automated data quality checks

  • Git, GitHub Actions

Version control and CI for pipeline code

Where to learn

Career path

How remote data engineers usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.

  1. Entry

Junior Data Engineer or Analytics Engineer

    0-2 years

Maintains existing pipelines and dbt models under review; few remote roles at this level

  2. Mid-level

    Data Engineer

    2-5 years

Builds new pipelines end to end and owns a few data sources and their quality

  3. Senior

    Senior Data Engineer

    5-8 years

Designs the platform, picks tools, sets standards and leads on cost and reliability

  4. Lead

Staff Data Engineer or Data Platform Lead

    8+ years

Owns the data architecture across teams, or manages data engineers

Sideways moves

  • Machine Learning Engineer or MLOps Engineer · from 3 years

Moving from data pipelines to feature pipelines and model serving

  • Cloud or Platform Engineer · from 3 years

For data engineers who enjoy infrastructure, Terraform and Kubernetes

Career path for a remote data engineer: Junior Data Engineer or Analytics Engineer (0-2 years), then Data Engineer (2-5 years), then Senior Data Engineer (5-8 years), then Staff Data Engineer or Data Platform Lead (8+ years). Sideways moves: Machine Learning Engineer or MLOps Engineer, Cloud or Platform Engineer.

Getting hired from Nigeria

Build one pipeline a reviewer can actually run. For example: pull daily exchange rates or public transport data from an API, land it in cloud storage, load it into BigQuery or Snowflake, model it with dbt (with tests), schedule it in Airflow, and put a small dashboard on top. Put everything in one GitHub repo with a diagram, a docker compose up to run it locally and a section on what you'd change at 100 times the data. One project like this beats a dozen notebooks.

Move across from the job you have. Backend developers can volunteer for the data export or reporting work at their current job; analysts can take over the dbt models and scheduling. A title change inside your company is often easier than a cold hire, and it gives you real stories for interviews.

Expect SQL first, then design. Remote data engineering interviews usually start with a hard SQL test, then Python, then a design round: "design a pipeline that ingests payments from three providers and gives finance a daily reconciled table". Practise drawing that on a shared whiteboard (Excalidraw or Miro) and talking through failure, late data and cost.

Where to look. LinkedIn (remote, EMEA or worldwide), Himalayas filtered to Nigeria, and the careers pages of remote-first companies that hire through Deel or Remote.com. Fintechs and logistics companies in Nigeria and across Africa hire data engineers and are a good first step. Avoid ads that require US work authorisation or a UK right to work.

Be ready for on-call. Some teams expect you to fix broken overnight loads before the business opens. That suits Lagos for UK companies; for US companies, ask what the on-call hours are before you accept.

Power, internet and pay. You'll be in calls and shared terminals most days, so have an inverter or solar backup and two internet providers. Most Nigeria-based data engineers work as contractors paid in dollars through Deel, Remote.com, Payoneer or a domiciliary account.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Learning ten tools shallowly. Employers would rather see deep SQL, Python and one cloud than a CV listing every logo on a data-stack chart.
  • Leaving your cloud account running. A forgotten cluster or BigQuery query on a huge public table can cost real dollars; set billing alerts and budgets on day one.
  • Building pipelines that can't be re-run. If running a job twice duplicates data, it isn't production-ready, and interviewers will ask.
  • Ignoring data modelling. Pipelines that dump raw JSON into the warehouse without clean tables push all the work onto analysts.
  • Applying only for senior titles because the pay looks good. Junior and analytics engineer roles are the realistic door; seniority comes from production experience.
  • Skipping documentation in your portfolio. A repo without a README and a diagram looks unfinished to a reviewer who has five minutes.

Questions people ask

Can I become a data engineer without a computer science degree?

Yes. Many remote data engineers come from analyst, backend or even non-technical backgrounds. Employers test SQL, Python and system design, and a strong project plus relevant work experience matters more than the degree.

Is data engineering harder than data analysis?

It's more technical. Data engineering needs software engineering habits (testing, version control, cloud, debugging) on top of strong SQL, while data analysis leans on business questions and communication. Many people do analysis first, then move across.

Which cloud should I learn for data engineering?

Pick the one most common in the job ads you target, and learn it properly. AWS appears most often overall, Google Cloud is popular with startups because of BigQuery, and Azure is common in UK and European corporates. The concepts transfer between them.

Do I need a certification to get a data engineering job?

No, but one can help a CV get past screening. Google recommends 3+ years of experience before its Professional Data Engineer exam, so beginners get more from building a project and taking the free Data Engineering Zoomcamp first.

What is the difference between a data engineer and an analytics engineer?

An analytics engineer mostly writes SQL models in dbt and owns the clean tables analysts use. A data engineer also builds ingestion, orchestration and infrastructure. At small companies one person often does both.

Can I practise data engineering without paying for cloud?

Mostly yes. Run PostgreSQL, Airflow and dbt locally in Docker, use the Databricks Free Edition for Spark and BigQuery's sandbox for warehouse work. Set a budget alert if you use any paid cloud account.
