To write a CV for international remote jobs, cut the local conventions that foreign recruiters don't expect (date of birth, state of origin, photo, long objectives). Then add what they look for: your location and time zone, proof that you work well remotely, and results written in figures they can understand. Most of a good Nigerian CV still works. What fails is the packaging.

That matters because your CV is often read first by software and then, for perhaps a minute, by a recruiter in London, Austin or Berlin who has never heard of your university or your last employer. If they can't work out where you are, when you're available and what you achieved, they move on.

This guide covers what to remove, what to add, how US, UK and European conventions differ, how to get through applicant tracking systems, and a tailoring routine you can repeat for each application. There's a hypothetical CV skeleton near the end that you can copy.

Quick answer

A CV for international remote jobs should be one to two pages, in a plain single-column layout, saved as a text-based PDF or Word file. Put your name, email, +234 phone number, LinkedIn and "Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1)" at the top. Leave out date of birth, state of origin, marital status and religion. Lead with a short summary, then achievements with numbers, the remote tools you've used and evidence that you can work on your own. Tailor it to every job.

How an international remote CV differs from a Nigerian CV

Many CVs written for Nigerian employers follow a template handed down through school and NYSC: a passport photo, personal data (date of birth, sex, state of origin, LGA, religion, marital status), a career objective, every school back to primary, hobbies and three referees with phone numbers.

International employers, especially in the UK and US, read that layout as outdated, and some of it creates a legal headache for them. They want a document that answers four questions fast:

  • Who are you professionally, and what job are you aiming at?
  • Where are you, and can you work the hours they need?
  • What have you achieved, in terms they can measure?
  • Can you work without someone looking over your shoulder?

A remote CV also has a second reader. Most mid-sized and large companies collect applications through an applicant tracking system (ATS), software that stores CVs and often pulls your details into a form automatically. If the software can't read your file, a recruiter may never see it the way you meant it to look.

What to remove from your CV

Cut these first. The cuts alone usually free up half a page.

Personal details foreign employers don't want

The UK government's National Careers Service CV guidance tells applicants to leave out their age, date of birth, marital status and nationality. In the US, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's page on prohibited employment policies and practices says information about age, race, religion and national origin is irrelevant to hiring decisions. It also says employers should not ask applicants for a photograph before an offer has been made and accepted.

In practice, a US or UK recruiter who gets a CV showing your religion or date of birth now holds information they're supposed to keep out of hiring decisions. Some will simply move on. Remove:

  • Date of birth and age
  • Sex or gender
  • State of origin and local government area (LGA)
  • Religion
  • Marital status and number of children
  • Your photo (for US and UK roles; Europe is covered below)
  • NIN, BVN, passport number or home address down to the street

Your NIN, BVN and passport details have no place on a CV in any country. A real employer collects identity documents after an offer, through a proper onboarding system. If someone asks for them before you've even interviewed, read our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.

Padding that costs you space

  • Career objective. Swap "To work in a challenging environment where I can apply my skills..." for a three-line professional summary (covered below).
  • Primary and secondary school. For graduates, your degree is enough. Keep WAEC only if you have no tertiary qualification.
  • Referees' contact details. The National Careers Service suggests writing "references available on request" rather than listing other people's details. Many international CVs leave the line out completely.
  • Generic hobbies. "Reading, travelling, meeting people" tells a recruiter nothing. Keep an interest only if it's relevant, such as running a tech community or writing a newsletter.
  • Old or irrelevant jobs. Transport for London's CV advice says the last five to eight years of work history is usually enough.

What to add so the CV works for remote hiring

A location line with your time zone

Remote job ads often limit where applicants can live, and the recruiter's first question is usually whether you fall inside that area. Answer it in your header:

Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1) · Open to remote roles · Available for UK and European hours

Nigeria stays on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year with no daylight saving. That is the same time as London in summer, one hour ahead of London in winter (UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026), and the same as Central Europe in winter. This overlap is a real selling point for UK and European roles, so state it plainly. For US roles, give the hours you can cover. US Eastern is 5 hours behind Lagos in summer and 6 hours behind from 1 November 2026, so "available until 10pm WAT for US Eastern overlap" is specific and believable.

Don't hide that you're in Nigeria or put a foreign address. If the role only accepts people in certain countries, you'll be screened out later anyway, and a misleading location costs you trust. Before applying, confirm the role is open to you: see how to check whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.

A short professional summary

Write three or four lines under your header: your role title, years of experience, your strongest result and what you're looking for. For example: "Customer support specialist with 4 years in SaaS and fintech, handling 60+ tickets a day in Zendesk with a 95% satisfaction score. Looking for a remote support role on UK or EU hours." (The figures here are illustrative; use your own.) Our planned guide to writing a professional summary for a remote CV has more examples.

Evidence that you work well remotely

"Can work independently" on a skills list proves nothing. Put the evidence inside your job bullets instead:

  • Tools named in context: Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Workspace, Notion, Jira, Asana, Trello, HubSpot, Zendesk, GitHub
  • Written, asynchronous work: documentation you wrote, weekly reports, handover notes
  • Work with people in other countries or time zones
  • Results you delivered with little supervision

If you have never held a remote job, hybrid work, freelance projects, volunteer roles run on WhatsApp and Google Docs, or a team project with members in another city all count. Our planned guide on describing remote work skills on a CV goes further.

Achievements with numbers foreign readers can follow

Turn duties into results. Wherever you can, show the size, the change and the time it took.

Weak bulletStronger bullet
Responsible for social media pagesGrew Instagram followers from 8,000 to 21,000 in 9 months with a weekly content calendar
Handled customer complaintsResolved about 50 tickets a day in Freshdesk; cut first-response time from 6 hours to 2
In charge of ad budgetManaged a ₦50 million (about $36,700) monthly Meta Ads budget at a 3.1x return on ad spend

The figures in the table are hypothetical. Use your own, and never inflate them, because interviewers ask follow-up questions.

When a figure is in naira, add a dollar equivalent in brackets so a foreign recruiter grasps the scale. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), ₦50 million is about $36,700. Round it, and keep the rate consistent across the CV.

Translating Nigerian context for foreign recruiters

A recruiter abroad may not know your employer, your degree grading or what NYSC is. One short explanation each time saves them guessing.

Employers they've never heard of

Add a short descriptor after each company name: "Paystack-style payments startup" is vague, so describe the company itself, for example "(Lagos-based digital lender, 200 staff)" or "(Nigerian logistics company serving 5 states)". If your employer has international clients or investors, say so.

Degree classes and CGPA

UK readers know "Second Class Upper" because the UK uses the same system. US readers think in GPAs on a 4.0 scale, so a bare "4.21" can look like an error. Write it in full: "B.Sc. Accounting, University of Ibadan, Second Class Upper (CGPA 4.21/5.00)". Don't convert it into a US GPA or claim it equals a foreign degree unless an official body has said so. If an employer needs a formal comparison for a UK role, UK ENIC's Statement of Comparability is a paid certificate showing how international qualifications compare with UK ones. You don't need one for most remote applications.

Write out local acronyms in full on first use: HND (Higher National Diploma), ICAN (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria), CIPM (Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria).

Nysc

Explain it once: "National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Nigeria's mandatory one-year national service for graduates". If you did real work during service, list the placement as a job with bullets and results like any other role. If you didn't, a single line under education is enough.

US resume vs UK CV vs European CV

The conventions are similar but not the same. Check the company's headquarters and the job ad, then adjust.

ConventionUSUKContinental Europe
Usual nameResumeCVCV
PhotoLeave it outLeave it outOften expected
LengthOften 1 page early careerUp to 2 pages1 to 2 pages
Personal detailsNone beyond contactNone beyond contactSometimes more

The UK column follows the National Careers Service and TfL guidance above (TfL says a photo isn't needed and suggests no more than two pages). The US column follows the EEOC's position on photos and on personal information. For Europe, the EU's own Europass CV builder, which lets you create CVs in 31 languages, advises adding a professional photograph in its CV tips (as of October 2026). So a German or Dutch company may be used to photos, while a US company hiring for the same remote team may not want one.

When the company is international and the ad is in English, a no-photo CV is the safe default. Add a professional headshot only if the ad asks for one or the company clearly follows European norms. Our planned guides on adapting your CV for US remote jobs and adapting your CV for UK remote jobs go into country detail.

Making your CV readable by applicant tracking systems

ATS vendors don't publish everything about how they parse CVs, but what they do say lines up.

  • Greenhouse's help article on why a CV didn't import correctly lists three causes: too little information, a non-standard file type, and characters its parser doesn't recognise.
  • Workday's administrator guide on resume parsing says results vary with the CV's format and word order. It recommends CVs without images or image-based styles, and says the Languages and Skills fields are not auto-filled (as of October 2026).

What that means for your file:

  1. Use one column, standard headings (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills) and a common font such as Arial or Calibri at 11pt or larger, which the National Careers Service also recommends.
  2. Don't put your name or contact details inside a picture, text box or page header.
  3. Skip skill bars, star ratings, icons and decorative symbols. Use plain hyphens or round bullets.
  4. Save as a text-based PDF or a .docx file. If you can't highlight and copy the text in your PDF, the software can't read it either. Canva exports are the usual culprit.
  5. Name the file clearly: "Adaeze-Okafor-CV.pdf", not "CV final final 2.pdf".
  6. After uploading, check every field the form fills in automatically. On Workday forms, add your languages and skills by hand.

Keywords matter, but in a simple way. If the ad says "Zendesk" and "SLA", and you've used Zendesk and worked to SLAs, use those exact words. Don't paste in the job description or hide keywords in white text. Recruiters see the parsed text, and stuffing looks dishonest.

What makes a remote CV get noticed

Getting past software only gets you in front of a person. What earns the interview is relevance. Recruiters often skim the top third of page one first, so that's where your strongest material goes.

  • A headline that matches the job. If the ad says "Customer Success Manager", your header says "Customer Success Manager", not "Experienced Professional".
  • The two or three requirements they repeat. If the ad mentions "B2B SaaS" three times, your SaaS experience goes in the summary and the first bullets.
  • A result in your first bullet. Lead each role with your biggest measurable win, not your oldest duty.
  • Proof links. Add a portfolio, GitHub, published writing or a case study where your field has one. See presenting personal projects on an application.
  • Clean, consistent formatting. Same date format throughout ("Mar 2023 to Jun 2025"), no spelling mistakes, no mixed fonts.

A matching LinkedIn profile helps too, because many recruiters check it before replying. Our planned guide on writing a LinkedIn profile for remote jobs covers that.

A tailoring routine for each application

Keep one master CV with everything on it, then cut a tailored copy for each job. This takes 20 to 30 minutes once you've done it a few times.

  1. Confirm the role is open to people living in Nigeria, and note the hours and time zone it expects.
  2. Highlight the five to eight skills, tools and outcomes the ad stresses most.
  3. Copy your master CV and change the headline and summary to match the role.
  4. Reorder your bullets so the most relevant achievements come first in each role. Delete bullets that don't help this application.
  5. Use the ad's own wording for tools and skills you genuinely have.
  6. Adjust the location line to the time zone of the team.
  7. Check length (two pages at most), export as PDF and test that the text copies cleanly.
  8. Save the version with the company name, and log it in your application tracker.

Write a cover letter for roles that ask for one, or where you need to explain something the CV can't, such as a career change. Our planned guide to remote job cover letters covers that.

A sample CV structure (hypothetical)

Example (hypothetical): this skeleton is for an imaginary Abuja-based operations coordinator applying to a UK company. The names, numbers and company are invented to show the layout.

Chidi Bello Operations Coordinator · Abuja, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1) · Available for UK hours chidi.bello@email.com · +234 803 000 0000 · linkedin.com/in/chidibello

Summary Operations coordinator with 3 years in e-commerce logistics. Built the order-tracking process that cut late deliveries by 30%. Comfortable working asynchronously in Notion and Slack with teams in two countries. Seeking a remote operations role with a UK or European company.

Experience Operations Coordinator, ShopQuick (Nigerian e-commerce marketplace, 120 staff) · Jan 2023 to present

  • Cut late deliveries by 30% in 6 months by building a daily tracking sheet in Google Sheets shared with 4 courier partners
  • Wrote 25 standard operating procedures in Notion, reducing onboarding time for new staff from 3 weeks to 1
  • Coordinated weekly calls with a supplier team in Shenzhen (7 hours ahead of Lagos)

Education B.Sc. Economics, Ahmadu Bello University, Second Class Upper (CGPA 4.10/5.00), 2021 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Nigeria's mandatory national service for graduates, 2021 to 2022

Skills Notion, Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP), Asana, process documentation

Common mistakes Nigerian applicants make

  • Sending one CV to every job. A general CV reads as general. Tailor the top third at the very least.
  • Using a fancy two-column template. It looks good on your phone and comes apart in the ATS.
  • Leaving out the time zone. The recruiter shouldn't have to guess whether you can join a 9am London stand-up.
  • Listing duties, not results. "Responsible for" is the most common opening on CVs that get ignored.
  • Unexplained gaps. A one-line reason is enough: study, caregiving, a business you ran. See explaining employment gaps on a remote application.
  • Exaggerating with AI tools. AI can tighten your wording, but claiming tools or results you don't have will come out at interview. Our planned guide on using AI on your CV honestly explains where the line is.
  • An unprofessional email address. Use a plain firstname.lastname format, as TfL also advises.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CV the same as a resume for remote jobs?

Mostly, yes. US employers say "resume" and usually expect a shorter document, often one page early in your career. UK, European and Nigerian employers say "CV" and accept up to two pages. A remote job resume that gets noticed follows the same rules described here: a clear headline, your time zone, measurable results and a parse-friendly layout.

Should I put a photo on my CV for international remote jobs?

Not for US or UK roles. The EEOC says US employers shouldn't ask for photographs before an offer, and UK guidance from TfL says a photo isn't needed. Some continental European employers expect one, and the EU's Europass tips suggest a professional photo, so add one only if the ad or the company's norms call for it.

Should I include my state of origin, date of birth or religion?

No. The National Careers Service advises leaving out age, date of birth, marital status and nationality, and US equal-opportunity guidance treats age, religion and national origin as irrelevant to hiring. State of origin, LGA and religion only matter for Nigerian public-sector forms, and even there they belong on the form, not your CV.

How long should a CV for an international remote job be?

One to two pages. TfL suggests no more than two pages. For US roles, aim for one page if you have under about five years of experience. Cut older or irrelevant roles before you shrink the font.

Should I put NYSC on my CV?

Yes, briefly, with a one-line explanation, because foreign recruiters may not know what it is. If you did real work during your service year, list it as a job with results. If not, a single line under education is enough.

Should I send my CV as a PDF or a Word document?

Either works if the ad doesn't say. Use a text-based PDF (one where you can highlight the text) or a .docx file. Avoid image-heavy designs, because Workday says image-based CVs parse less reliably and Greenhouse lists unrecognised characters as a reason CVs fail to import.

Should I say I'm in Nigeria if the job says "remote, worldwide"?

Yes. Put your city, "Nigeria" and "WAT, UTC+1" in your header. Hiding your location doesn't get you around eligibility rules and damages trust once it comes out. Only apply where the ad or careers page shows that people in Nigeria can apply.

Can I use one CV for both freelance platforms and remote jobs?

You can start from the same master CV, but tailor each version. Job applications need a structured CV that ATS software can read. Freelance platforms like Upwork rely on your profile and portfolio more than an uploaded CV. See highlighting freelance experience on a remote CV.

Key takeaways

  • Remove date of birth, state of origin, LGA, religion, marital status, ID numbers and (for US and UK roles) your photo.
  • Put "City, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1)" and the hours you can work in your header.
  • Lead with a short summary and results in numbers, with dollar equivalents for naira figures.
  • Explain NYSC, CGPA and unfamiliar employers in a few words each.
  • Use a single-column, text-based PDF or .docx, and check the auto-filled fields after uploading.
  • Tailor the headline, summary and bullet order to every job from one master CV.
