How to Get a Remote Azure Engineer Job
Skills, AZ-104 and other Azure certifications, portfolio projects and live job ads: how Nigerians can land a remote Azure engineer job with a foreign company.

You get a remote Azure engineer job by proving you can run real workloads on Microsoft Azure: networks, identity, compute and automated deployments. Then you apply to the companies, usually consultancies and Microsoft-focused firms, whose ads accept people living in Nigeria. A certificate helps you get past the CV filter. What gets you hired is hands-on proof.
This guide is written for Nigerians coming from IT support, systems administration or software development, and for self-taught cloud learners. It covers the main Azure job titles and what each one does, which Microsoft certifications are worth paying for and in what order, and how to build Azure experience without an employer's subscription. It also shows how to read the location and time-zone lines in a job ad, using three live Azure ads we checked in October 2026, and what to expect on pay. If you want the general cloud career path rather than the Azure-specific one, start with our cloud engineer career guide.
Quick answer
To get a remote Azure engineer job from Nigeria, learn Azure networking, identity (Microsoft Entra ID), compute and storage. Pass AZ-104, the Azure Administrator Associate exam. Then build two or three public projects using Terraform or Bicep and a CI/CD pipeline. Apply to roles marked worldwide, EMEA or Nigeria whose working hours fit West Africa Time. Most Azure ads open to Nigeria are mid-level or senior, so expect an IT or development background to count.
What a remote Azure engineer does
"Azure engineer" is a label recruiters use for several different jobs. They all centre on Microsoft's cloud, but the daily work differs. Knowing which one you're aiming for changes what you study and which ads you apply to.
| Job title in ads | What you mostly do | Typical Microsoft credential |
|---|---|---|
| Azure administrator / Azure cloud engineer | Build and run VMs, networks, storage, backups, access | AZ-104 |
| Azure DevOps engineer | CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, AKS | AZ-104 or AZ-204, then AZ-400 |
| Azure platform engineer | Shared platforms, landing zones, guardrails for dev teams | AZ-104, often AZ-305 |
| Azure solutions architect | Design systems and advise clients | AZ-305 (needs AZ-104 first) |
| Azure data engineer | Data Factory, Databricks, Fabric pipelines | A data track, not infrastructure |
The first three titles overlap a lot in real ads. An "Azure cloud engineer" at a consultancy might spend the morning fixing a virtual network peering problem and the afternoon writing a Terraform module. The data engineer title is a separate career, and our data engineer career guide covers it. Don't confuse the two when you search.
Remote Azure engineer vs a general cloud engineer
Azure work leans towards companies that already run Microsoft software: Windows Server, Microsoft 365, SQL Server, Active Directory. That's why Azure ads ask so often for PowerShell, hybrid identity and Entra ID (the new name for Azure Active Directory). If you've administered Windows servers or Microsoft 365 at a Nigerian bank, telco or school, that background counts for more in Azure than it would for AWS. If you're still choosing a cloud, compare this guide with how to get a remote AWS engineer job and remote Google Cloud engineer jobs.
Skills that show up in real Azure job ads
In October 2026 we read a set of remote Azure ads open to applicants in Nigeria or worldwide. The same skills came up again and again. Here is what to learn, roughly in order.
Core Azure services
Microsoft's own description of the Azure Administrator Associate certification is a good checklist for the core skills. It covers identities and governance, storage, compute, virtual networking, and monitoring and maintenance. It also expects you to know PowerShell, the Azure CLI, the Azure portal, ARM templates or Bicep files, and Microsoft Entra ID.
In practice, that means you should be able to:
- Build a virtual network with subnets, network security groups and a VPN or peering connection
- Deploy and patch Windows and Linux VMs, and set up Azure Backup
- Give people only the access they need using role-based access control (RBAC) and Entra ID groups
- Set up Azure Monitor alerts and read logs in Log Analytics when something breaks
- Apply Azure Policy so a team can't create resources in the wrong region
Infrastructure as code and pipelines
Employers want to see infrastructure written as code, not clicked together in the portal. The gravity9 Senior DevOps Engineer (Azure) ad asks for Terraform, complex CI/CD pipelines "especially in Azure DevOps", and scripting in Bash, PowerShell and Helm (as of October 2026). The Terminal 3 contract ad asks for Terraform, Ansible and Packer for machine images.
Learn Terraform first, because it also works on AWS and Google Cloud. Then learn enough Bicep to read and change it, since many Microsoft-only shops use it.
Containers and Kubernetes
Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) is required in the gravity9 ad and is common in senior Azure DevOps roles. Learn Docker first, then AKS: node pools, ingress, pulling images from Azure Container Registry and deploying with Helm. Our planned guide to remote Kubernetes engineer jobs goes further on this.
Git, GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps
The M365Connect ad lists GitHub Actions alongside Azure DevOps repositories, pipelines and build agents (as of October 2026). Know both. Azure DevOps (the Microsoft product) and "DevOps" (the practice) are different things. Ads use the same word for both, so read the context.
Which Azure certifications to take, and in what order
Microsoft certifications aren't a hiring requirement in every ad. The gravity9 ad we read lists none. They still help a Nigerian applicant who has no well-known employer on the CV, because they give a recruiter something they can verify.
| Order | Certification | Exam | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Azure Administrator Associate | AZ-104 | None |
| 1 (developers) | Azure Developer Associate | AZ-204 | None |
| 2 | DevOps Engineer Expert | AZ-400 | AZ-104 or AZ-204 |
| 2 | Azure Solutions Architect Expert | AZ-305 | AZ-104 |
The prerequisites come from Microsoft's own pages. To earn the Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification you must already hold the Azure Administrator Associate. To earn the DevOps Engineer Expert certification you need either the Azure Administrator Associate or the Azure Developer Associate. So for most infrastructure-minded readers, AZ-104 is the first exam that matters.
Microsoft also offers a fundamentals-level Azure exam. It's fine for learning the vocabulary, but the employers we read ask for hands-on Azure experience, not a fundamentals badge. If money is tight, go straight to AZ-104.
Exam practicalities for Nigerian candidates
- Price: Microsoft says the exam price is "based on the country or region in which the exam is proctored". Check the price for Nigeria on the exam page before you budget, because figures quoted on blogs are often for the US (as of October 2026).
- Account: Microsoft strongly recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account. Exam records tied to a work or school account can be lost when you leave that organisation.
- Online proctoring: The AZ-104 exam lasts 100 minutes and is proctored. For an online sitting, you need stable power and internet for the whole time. Run the inverter and a backup data connection, and test both the day before.
- Retakes: If you fail, you can retake AZ-104 24 hours after your first attempt. Later retakes have longer waiting periods.
- Renewal: The Azure Administrator Associate renews every 12 months. Microsoft lets you renew role-based certifications free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
- Free practice: Microsoft Learn has a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox, so use those before you pay for an attempt.
For how Azure certifications compare with AWS, security and other IT credentials, see our planned roundup of IT certifications for landing remote jobs.
Building Azure experience without an employer
Most remote Azure ads open to Nigeria ask for years of experience. The gravity9 ad wants at least five years with Azure. The Terminal 3 contract wants five or more years in infrastructure and DevOps. You can't fake that, but you can show real work that makes a hiring manager take your application seriously.
Free ways to practise on Azure
Microsoft's Azure free services page says new customers get monthly free amounts of listed services for 12 months, plus more than 65 services that stay free as long as you have an account (as of October 2026). If you start on the free trial, the page says you must move to pay-as-you-go within 30 days to keep the 12 months of free services.
Students have an easier route. The same page says Azure for Students includes $100 of credit and needs only an academic email address, with no credit card (as of October 2026). That matters in Nigeria, where naira cards often fail on international subscriptions. If your university email works, use it.
Two habits will save you money on any subscription:
- Set a budget alert in Cost Management before you build anything.
- Delete the resource group when you finish a lab. A forgotten VM or firewall can run up a bill fast.
Three portfolio projects that read well to Azure hiring managers
- A small landing zone in Terraform or Bicep. A hub-and-spoke virtual network, Azure Policy that blocks unapproved regions, RBAC roles and a Log Analytics workspace. Put it on GitHub with a diagram and a README explaining your decisions.
- A web app with a full pipeline. A simple app deployed to Azure App Service or AKS through GitHub Actions or Azure Pipelines, with a test stage and an approval step before production.
- A monitoring and incident write-up. Break something on purpose (fill a disk, block a port in a network security group), then show the alert firing, how you found the cause, and the fix. This is the closest thing to on-call experience you can show without a job.
A short written explanation of each project often impresses more than the code. Remote teams hire people who can explain clearly in writing.
If you're coming from IT support or sysadmin work
Your fastest route is often inside your current job. Volunteer to handle the company's Microsoft 365 or Entra ID tasks, migrate a file server to Azure Files, or set up Azure Backup. Real production work beats any lab. Our planned guide on moving from IT support to remote cloud engineering covers that transition step by step.
Where remote Azure jobs open to Nigerians come from
Azure roles that accept applicants from Nigeria tend to come from three kinds of employers:
- Consultancies and Microsoft partners that run Azure for clients in the UK, Europe and North America
- Software companies that host their product on Azure and hire engineers across time zones
- Recruitment agencies filling contract roles for end clients
Many big US employers advertise "remote" Azure roles that are open only to people already allowed to work in the US. Those aren't open to you from Lagos, however well you match the skills.
Three live Azure ads, read from a Nigerian point of view
We checked these ads on 27 October 2026. Eligibility and deadlines change, so open the live ad before applying.
| Ad | What the location line says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| gravity9, Senior DevOps Engineer (Azure), full-time | Open to all countries, works with UK and US clients | Eligible from Nigeria; UK hours suit WAT |
| M365Connect, senior engineer with Azure DevOps, full-time | Nigeria only, 100% remote, Nigeria time zone | Eligible; check who the actual employer is |
| Terminal 3, DevOps Engineer Azure, 2-month contract | Worldwide, but within 2 hours of GMT+8 | Effectively not open to Lagos |
The Terminal 3 ad is the useful lesson. The page metadata says "open to candidates from all countries", but the role requires you to be within two hours of GMT+8. That means UTC+6 to UTC+10. Lagos is UTC+1, five hours outside the window. Always read the time-zone line, not just the "worldwide" tag.
The M365Connect ad teaches a second habit. The ad describes a startup, while the company profile on the job board describes a German IT recruitment agency. That isn't a red flag by itself, since agencies hire for clients all the time. It does mean you should ask early who will employ you and who will pay you. Our planned guide on telling recruitment agencies from direct employers explains what to ask.
For more on the labels you'll see in ads, read what "worldwide remote" really means from Nigeria and what EMEA means in a job description.
Time zones, on-call and your setup in Nigeria
Azure engineers keep systems running, so time zones matter more than for many remote jobs.
UK and European clients are the natural fit. London is on GMT from 25 October 2026, so a 9am to 5pm London day is 10am to 6pm in Lagos. In summer (BST) the two cities are on the same time. Central European Time matches Lagos in winter and is one hour ahead in summer.
US clients mean afternoon and evening work. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern time is six hours behind Lagos, so 9am to 5pm in New York is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. In summer it's 2pm to 10pm. US Pacific is eight or nine hours behind, which pushes into the small hours.
On-call is where Nigerian infrastructure gets tested. If you're paged at 2am for a production outage, you need power and internet then, not just in office hours. Before you accept an infrastructure role with on-call duty, have:
- An inverter or solar system that can carry your laptop and router through a long outage
- Two internet connections from different providers, for example fibre plus a MiFi, or Starlink plus a phone hotspot
- Multi-factor authentication on a phone that stays charged, because Azure admin accounts will require it
Be honest in interviews about your backup setup. Interviewers for infrastructure roles often ask what happens if your power fails during an incident, and a specific answer builds trust.
How to apply for remote Azure engineer jobs
- Pick one target title. Choose Azure cloud engineer, Azure DevOps engineer or Azure administrator, and write your CV for that title.
- Match your CV to the ad's vocabulary. If the ad says AKS, Bicep and Entra ID, those exact words should appear in your CV wherever they're true.
- Write results, not duties. See the example below.
- Link your GitHub and certification badge. Microsoft lets you share a verifiable badge. Put the link in your CV header and LinkedIn profile.
- Check eligibility before you apply. Look at the country list, the time-zone window, and any work-authorisation or security-clearance line.
- Prepare for a technical round. The gravity9 ad describes a recruiter screen of about 60 minutes, a 90-minute technical interview with DevOps consultants and a 30-minute leadership interview (as of October 2026). Expect scenario questions such as "a VM can't reach storage over a private endpoint: how do you troubleshoot it?" Our cloud engineer interview questions help you practise.
- Follow up once. If you've heard nothing after about a week, send one short, polite message. Don't chase daily.
Example (hypothetical): turning duties into results on an Azure CV
Weak: "Responsible for managing Azure resources and deployments."
Stronger: "Rebuilt a manually created Azure environment (3 virtual networks, 12 VMs) in Terraform, cutting new-environment setup from two days to under an hour and putting every change through Azure Pipelines with approval gates."
Only write numbers that are true for your own work. A hiring manager will ask about them.
Our DevOps engineer career guide covers the pipeline side in more depth if that's your target title.
What remote Azure engineers earn
There's no reliable public dataset of Azure salaries paid to Nigeria-based remote workers. Most of the ads we read, including all three in the table above, didn't publish pay. So treat any single "Azure salary in Nigeria" figure online with caution.
US government data gives a ceiling to benchmark against, not a figure you should expect:
| US occupation (BLS, May 2025) | Median pay a year | Closest Azure titles |
|---|---|---|
| Network and computer systems administrators | $99,130 | Azure administrator, cloud engineer |
| Computer network architects | $134,050 | Azure architect, senior platform engineer |
These are medians for people working in the US. At the WorkRemote house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), the administrator median is about ₦135 million a year. A company hiring a contractor in Nigeria will usually offer well below US local pay. Many set pay by location bands, and contract rates are often lower again. BLS also notes that architect roles typically need five or more years of experience in a related job.
Example (hypothetical): an Azure contract pays $3,000 a month. At ₦1,362 to $1, that's ₦4,086,000 a month before withdrawal fees, exchange spreads and tax. Check how the money will reach you before you sign. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains what you owe.
Being hired as a contractor rather than as an employee through an employer of record changes leave, notice and who handles tax. See contractor vs employee for Nigerians hired abroad.
Common mistakes that cost Azure applicants interviews
- Collecting certificates without labs. Three Azure certifications and no GitHub projects reads as exam cramming. One certificate plus two well-documented projects is stronger.
- Applying to US-only or clearance roles. Lines like "must be authorised to work in the US", "US citizens only" or "must hold an active clearance" rule you out, whatever the skills match.
- Ignoring the time-zone window. As the Terminal 3 ad shows, "worldwide" with a narrow time-zone window can still exclude Lagos.
- Leaving lab resources running. An unexpected Azure bill on a dollar card is an expensive lesson. Use budget alerts.
- Overstating Kubernetes or architect experience. Senior Azure interviews go into detail quickly. Claim what you've actually done.
- Paying for "Azure job placement". No real employer charges you to be hired. Be wary of anyone selling a guaranteed Azure job or asking you to buy their course as a hiring step. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.
Frequently asked questions
Is AZ-104 enough to get a remote Azure job?
On its own, usually not. AZ-104 gets your CV past filters, but the remote Azure ads we read ask for hands-on experience, and senior ones ask for five years or more. Pair AZ-104 with public projects in Terraform or Bicep and any real Azure work you can do in your current job.
Can I become an Azure engineer in Nigeria without a degree?
Yes, though some employers prefer one. The gravity9 ad we read recommends a STEM degree but says alternative pathways are considered. Proof of skill, such as certifications, GitHub projects and real admin experience, carries most of the weight for remote infrastructure roles.
Should I learn Azure or AWS first?
Learn the cloud the jobs you want actually use. Azure suits people with Windows Server, Microsoft 365 or Active Directory backgrounds, and is common at Microsoft-focused consultancies serving UK and European clients. Terraform, Linux, networking and Git carry over between clouds, so the first one you learn isn't wasted.
Can Nigerians take Microsoft certification exams online?
Microsoft's exams are proctored, and the price depends on the country where the exam is proctored. Check the current price and online proctoring options for Nigeria on the official exam page. Have backup power and internet ready, because a dropped connection during a proctored exam is a real risk.
Do Azure certifications expire?
Yes. The Azure Administrator Associate has a 12-month renewal cycle. Microsoft lets you renew role-based certifications free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn before they expire, so you don't pay for the exam again.
How do I practise Azure if my naira card is declined?
Students with an academic email can use Azure for Students, which Microsoft says includes $100 of credit and needs no credit card (as of October 2026). Otherwise, a dollar virtual card from a Nigerian fintech is the usual workaround for the standard free account. Set a budget alert before you deploy anything.
Are there entry-level remote Azure jobs?
They're rare. Most remote Azure roles open to Nigeria are mid-level or senior, because infrastructure mistakes are expensive. A realistic entry route is IT support, cloud support or Microsoft 365 admin work first, then moving up into Azure engineering once you have production experience.
Key takeaways
- "Azure engineer" covers administrator, cloud, DevOps, platform and architect roles. Pick one target title and write your CV for it.
- AZ-104 is the usual first certification. AZ-305 requires it, and AZ-400 requires AZ-104 or AZ-204.
- Remote Azure ads open to Nigeria repeatedly ask for Terraform or Bicep, Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions pipelines, AKS and PowerShell.
- Read the time-zone line, not just the "worldwide" label. A narrow window can exclude Lagos.
- US pay figures are ceilings, not offers. Nigeria-based contractors are usually paid less, so check pay, contract type and payment route before you sign.
- Backup power and internet aren't optional for infrastructure roles with on-call duty.
