Remote Kubernetes engineer jobs are real and some are open to people living in Nigeria, but most of them aren't titled "Kubernetes Engineer". They're advertised as DevOps, platform, site reliability or cloud engineering roles where Kubernetes is the main daily tool. You need solid Linux, containers, one cloud provider and infrastructure-as-code. Most employers also want production experience, not only a certificate.

This guide covers what the work involves and which job titles to search. It also lists the skills employers ask for and which CNCF certifications are worth the money, with prices in naira. We looked at live ads in October 2026 to see what Nigeria-based applicants can actually apply for, and we explain how to build real Kubernetes experience on Nigerian power and data. You'll also learn how to read location lines, so you don't waste applications on roles that quietly exclude Africa.

Quick answer

Nigeria-based engineers can get remote Kubernetes work, mainly in ads marked "worldwide" or "EMEA" (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Search for DevOps, platform, SRE and cloud titles as well as "Kubernetes". Employers want Linux, Docker, one major cloud, Terraform, CI/CD and production troubleshooting. The CKA exam costs $445 as of October 2026. Check every ad's location line before applying.

What a Kubernetes engineer actually does

Kubernetes is an open source platform for running and managing containerised applications across many machines. Google open sourced it in 2014, according to the official Kubernetes overview. It handles service discovery, load balancing, rollouts and rollbacks, self-healing, scaling, and secrets and configuration. "K8s" is shorthand for the eight letters between the K and the s.

A Kubernetes engineer keeps those clusters healthy and makes them easy for developers to use. A typical week might include:

  • Upgrading a cluster to a new Kubernetes version without downtime
  • Writing Helm charts or Kustomize overlays so teams can deploy their services
  • Debugging a pod stuck in CrashLoopBackOff at 2am because an alert fired
  • Setting resource requests and limits so one noisy service doesn't starve the others
  • Wiring up monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana, and logging with something like Loki or the ELK stack
  • Locking down access with RBAC (role-based access control), network policies and secrets management
  • Managing the cluster itself with Terraform on AWS EKS, Azure AKS or Google GKE

The official overview also notes that Kubernetes doesn't build your code, provide databases or ship built-in logging and monitoring. Those gaps are why the job always includes the tools around Kubernetes, not just Kubernetes.

Job titles to search for remote Kubernetes work

If you only type "Kubernetes Engineer" into job boards, you'll miss most of the market. ITJobsWatch tracks UK vacancies, and its remote and hybrid Kubernetes Engineer page recorded only 3 permanent vacancies with that exact title in the six months to 27 October 2026. Kubernetes is everywhere as a skill but rare as a job title.

Job titleHow much KubernetesUsual level
DevOps EngineerOften central, plus CI/CDMid to senior
Platform EngineerCentral: builds internal platforms on K8sMid to senior
Site Reliability EngineerHeavy, with on-call and observabilityMid to senior
Cloud EngineerPartial: EKS, AKS or GKE among many servicesJunior to senior
Software Engineer (Kubernetes)Writes operators, controllers, add-onsMid to senior
Solutions or Forward Deployed EngineerHelps customers run a K8s productMid to senior
Backend EngineerDeploys to K8s, doesn't run itAny

Search each title together with the word "Kubernetes" and a location term such as "remote EMEA" or "worldwide". On WorkRemote's tech job listings, you can search "Kubernetes" as a keyword. Each listing shows where applicants may live.

For the career paths behind these titles, see our guides to becoming a remote DevOps engineer, remote site reliability engineering and cloud engineering from Nigeria. Platform engineering gets its own treatment in how to find remote platform engineering jobs.

Skills remote Kubernetes employers ask for

The skills fall into four layers. Employers expect the lower layers before they take the upper ones seriously.

Foundations (non-negotiable)

  • Linux: processes, systemd, file permissions, networking commands (ip, ss, dig, curl), reading logs. One of the live Canonical ads we opened lists Linux systems administration as a requirement next to Kubernetes.
  • Networking basics: DNS, TCP/IP, load balancers, TLS certificates. Most hard Kubernetes bugs turn out to be networking or DNS problems.
  • Containers: writing small, secure Dockerfiles, multi-stage builds, image registries.
  • One scripting or programming language: Bash plus Python or Go. Go matters more as you get senior, because Kubernetes itself and most of its tooling are written in it.
  • Git: branching, pull requests, code review.

Core Kubernetes

The CNCF exam outlines are a good public map of what employers mean by "Kubernetes skills". The CKA page weights its exam as follows: troubleshooting 30%, cluster architecture, installation and configuration 25%, services and networking 20%, workloads and scheduling 15%, and storage 10%. Troubleshooting is the biggest single domain, and it's also what interviews test hardest.

In practice, you should be comfortable with:

  • Pods, Deployments, StatefulSets, DaemonSets, Jobs and CronJobs
  • Services, Ingress (or the newer Gateway API), and how traffic reaches a pod
  • ConfigMaps, Secrets, PersistentVolumes and StorageClasses
  • Requests, limits, Horizontal Pod Autoscaling and node scheduling (taints, tolerations, affinity)
  • RBAC, ServiceAccounts and network policies
  • kubectl fluency: describe, logs, exec, events, port-forward, and reading YAML quickly
  • Cluster upgrades and etcd backup and restore

The tools around Kubernetes

  • Packaging and deployment: Helm, Kustomize, and GitOps tools such as Argo CD or Flux
  • Infrastructure as code: Terraform (or OpenTofu), sometimes Pulumi or Crossplane
  • CI/CD: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or Jenkins
  • Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, Alertmanager, OpenTelemetry
  • Managed Kubernetes: at least one of EKS, AKS or GKE in depth. For cloud-specific routes, see remote AWS engineer jobs, remote Azure engineer jobs and remote Google Cloud engineer jobs.
  • Security: image scanning, admission policies (Kyverno or OPA Gatekeeper), secrets stores such as Vault

Remote-specific skills

Remote infrastructure teams rely heavily on written communication. Expect to write incident reports, design documents and clear pull request descriptions. Many teams run on-call rotations, so ask early which hours you'd cover and how often. Being able to explain calmly in Slack what broke, what you did and what's still at risk is a hiring signal in its own right.

Kubernetes certifications: which to take and what they cost

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and the Linux Foundation run the main Kubernetes certifications. Three of them are hands-on exams: you solve real problems in a live terminal under time pressure. Employers respect them for that reason.

Prices below are from the official CNCF pages as of October 2026. Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and are rounded.

ExamFormatPriceAbout in naira
KCNA (Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate)Online, multiple choice$250₦340,500
CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer)Hands-on, 2 hours$445₦606,000
CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator)Hands-on, 2 hours$445₦606,000
CKS (Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist)Hands-on, 2 hours$445₦606,000

Each fee includes one free retake, according to the CNCF pages for KCNA, CKAD, CKA and CKS. You must pass the CKA before sitting the CKS, although your CKA doesn't need to be current. Prices change and the Linux Foundation runs periodic discounts, so check the official page on the day you pay. Your bank may also add a foreign transaction charge on a naira card.

Which certification should you take first?

  • Already working with Linux or servers: go straight to the CKA. It matches DevOps, platform and SRE roles most closely, and you can skip the KCNA.
  • Developer who deploys to Kubernetes: the CKAD fits better. Its domains centre on application design, deployment, configuration and observability.
  • Complete beginner: the KCNA is described by CNCF as a pre-professional certification for people new to cloud native work. It's useful for structure, but hiring managers give it far less weight than the CKA. If money is tight, spend it on the CKA instead.
  • Aiming at security roles: take the CKS after the CKA. It weights supply chain security, microservice vulnerabilities, and monitoring and runtime security at 20% each.

You can start learning for free. The Linux Foundation's Introduction to Kubernetes (LFS158) is free and self-paced, with roughly 15 to 20 hours of material and hands-on labs using Minikube. For how Kubernetes certifications compare with cloud provider certificates, see the best IT certifications for landing remote jobs.

A certificate gets you past keyword filters, but it doesn't get you hired on its own. Interviewers will ask about a real incident you handled. The homelab section below covers how to have one.

Where Nigerians can find remote Kubernetes opportunities (as of October 2026)

We checked live ads and job boards on 27 October 2026. The honest picture: remote Kubernetes work open to Nigeria exists, but restricted ads outnumber it.

Examples from live ads

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, had two open Kubernetes roles on its Greenhouse board when we checked:

  • Software Engineer - Python and K8s: location "Home based - Worldwide". It asks for strong Python, familiarity with Kubernetes and Docker, Linux systems administration, hands-on experience with at least one public cloud, and a bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Senior Software Engineer - Python/Golang - Kubernetes: location "Home Based - Americas; Home based - EMEA". The work includes building Kubernetes operators and add-ons in Go and Python.

Neither ad states a salary. Both say pay depends on location, experience and performance, and both list a $2,000 yearly learning budget. Two details matter for Nigerian applicants. First, the application form asks for high school and degree results and says AI-generated answers will disqualify you, so write your answers yourself. Second, the roles involve in-person company events a few times a year, which may mean visa applications from Nigeria. Ask about that early. Ads close and locations change, so open the live ad before applying.

Other sources showed the wider pattern:

  • NoDesk's Kubernetes board: most recent listings were limited to Europe or a single country. Giant Swarm's Forward Deployed Engineer role, for example, was Germany-only at €70,000 to €100,000. Several "worldwide" roles on the page were years old. Read the posting date as well as the location.
  • Remote4Africa's Kubernetes listings: showed recent roles mentioning Kubernetes, including Kubernetes architect and SRE posts. Many were hybrid roles in South Africa, while others were 100% remote and worldwide. Full details there are members-only.

How to read the location line on a Kubernetes ad

Location lineCan you apply from Nigeria?
Worldwide / AnywhereUsually yes, but check for time-zone limits
EMEAUsually yes: Nigeria is in EMEA
Europe / EU / UKUsually no: often needs the right to work there
Single country (Germany, US)No, unless you live there with work rights
Africa / Nigeria namedYes, but check whether it's hybrid in one city

Infrastructure ads are stricter than most because of on-call and security clearance. Some US government-related Kubernetes ads require citizenship and a clearance, and those are closed to you however good you are. For more detail, see what "worldwide remote" really means and what EMEA means in a job description. To confirm an ad that's ambiguous, follow how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.

Time zones and on-call from Lagos

Lagos is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year. Right now, in winter, you're one hour ahead of London and level with Berlin and Amsterdam. In summer you share London's clock and sit an hour behind Central Europe. That overlap is a genuine selling point for EMEA infrastructure teams.

US teams are harder. US Eastern is 6 hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026 (5 in summer), and Pacific is 8 to 9 hours behind. A US on-call shift can land in the middle of your night. Some teams like this because "follow the sun" rotations let a Lagos engineer cover US night hours during Nigerian daytime. Say so in your application if the arrangement suits you.

Pay for remote Kubernetes roles: what the numbers tell you

There's no reliable public salary figure for Nigeria-based Kubernetes engineers, and we won't invent one. Here's what the official data shows, and what it doesn't.

  • US benchmark: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025. That's US pay for US-based workers. It's a ceiling to be aware of, not what you'll be offered from Lagos.
  • UK benchmark: ITJobsWatch recorded a median of £80,000 for remote or hybrid Kubernetes Engineer vacancies in the six months to October 2025. That median came from only six quoted salaries. The 2026 period had too few to calculate, so treat it as a thin signal.
  • Location-based pay: both Canonical ads we opened say pay depends partly on location. That's common. Remote pay for Nigeria-based engineers is usually below US local pay, though senior infrastructure roles still pay well by Nigerian standards.

The things that move your offer most:

  • Seniority: production on-call experience and a record of cluster upgrades count for far more than certificates.
  • Contract type: contractors usually get a higher headline rate but no pension, leave or equipment. Our guide to contractor versus employee arrangements explains the trade-off.
  • Employer's pay model: some employers pay one global band and others discount by country.
  • Go and security skills: operator development and CKS-level security knowledge are scarcer than general cluster operations.

Once an offer arrives, our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria covers the withdrawal options and their fees.

How to build Kubernetes experience from Nigeria

The common trap goes like this: employers want production experience, and you can't get production experience without a job. You break the loop by running something real, keeping it running and writing about what broke.

A homelab that works on Nigerian power and data

  • Start local: kind, Minikube or k3s run a cluster on a laptop with 16GB of RAM. Work there first. It costs nothing in data once the images are pulled.
  • Then go multi-node: k3s on two or three cheap used mini PCs or old laptops teaches you node failure, scheduling and storage in a way a single-node cluster can't.
  • Plan for NEPA: put the homelab on your inverter or solar. Treat a power cut as free chaos testing. If a node dies mid-upgrade, write down how you recovered it. That's an interview story.
  • Use cloud sparingly: spin up a managed cluster on EKS, AKS or GKE for a weekend project, run it through Terraform, and destroy it when you're done. Forgotten clusters and load balancers produce surprise bills in dollars on your naira card.
  • Have backup internet: pulling container images uses data. Two providers, or a MiFi plus your phone hotspot, stops a failed image pull from ending a study session. Many remote employers also ask about your connection backup.

Projects that prove the skills

Pick two or three and put them on GitHub with a clear README:

  1. Deploy a three-service app with Helm, managed through Argo CD, so a git push changes the live cluster.
  2. Build the cluster with Terraform, from VPC to node pools, and include the teardown command.
  3. Add Prometheus and Grafana with one meaningful alert, then write a short incident report after deliberately breaking something.
  4. Write a simple Kubernetes operator or controller in Go. This lines up directly with ads like Canonical's operator role.
  5. Harden the cluster: RBAC, network policies, image scanning in CI, and a written threat model.

For presenting this work, see how to build a software portfolio that attracts remote employers.

Get production exposure where you are

Ask to take over deployments at your current Nigerian job, even part-time. Volunteer to containerise a small internal tool. Contribute documentation or bug fixes to a CNCF project, where every merged pull request is public proof. If you're in IT support now, moving from IT support to remote cloud engineering maps that route step by step.

How to apply for remote Kubernetes jobs: a step-by-step workflow

  1. Shortlist by location first. Filter out any ad whose location line excludes Nigeria before you read the job description.
  2. Match the stack. If the ad says EKS, Terraform and Argo CD, lead your CV with those words where they're true.
  3. Rewrite your CV around outcomes. "Cut deploy time from 40 minutes to 8 by moving to Argo CD" beats "Responsible for CI/CD". Name versions, scale and cloud.
  4. Link proof. Put your GitHub, certificate verification link and one written incident report near the top.
  5. Answer screening questions yourself. Some employers, Canonical included, state that AI-generated answers will disqualify you.
  6. Prepare for a live troubleshooting round. Expect "this pod won't start, talk me through it". Practise thinking aloud: events, logs, describe, resources, image, config, network. See DevOps engineer interview questions.
  7. Ask the remote questions. Ask about on-call hours in WAT, how you'll be paid and in what currency, whether you'd be an employee through an employer of record or a contractor, and whether the role involves travel.

Example (hypothetical): Tunde is a sysadmin in Ibadan with two years on Linux servers. He passes the CKA, runs a three-node k3s cluster on his inverter and writes up two power-cut recoveries on his blog. He then applies only to "EMEA" and "worldwide" platform and SRE roles. His CV leads with the cluster project, and his cover note mentions that his WAT working hours overlap fully with Central European time in winter.

Common mistakes Nigerian applicants make

  • Searching only for "Kubernetes Engineer": the title is rare. Search DevOps, platform, SRE and cloud as well.
  • Applying to "Remote, US" or "Remote, EU" ads anyway: these usually need existing work authorisation, and a clever cover letter won't change that.
  • Collecting certificates instead of building projects: a KCNA, CKAD and CKA without a single running project reads as exam practice, not experience.
  • Skipping Linux and networking: most interview failures happen at the DNS or iptables layer, not in Kubernetes YAML.
  • Leaving cloud resources running: set billing alerts before you create anything.
  • Paying "recruiters" for placement: legitimate employers don't charge you to apply or to be hired. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian get a remote Kubernetes engineer job?

Yes, when the ad is open to worldwide, EMEA or Africa-based applicants. On 27 October 2026, for example, Canonical had a Kubernetes role advertised as "Home based - Worldwide". Many other Kubernetes ads are limited to the US, the UK or the EU, so check each location line.

How much does the CKA exam cost in naira?

The CKA costs $445 as of October 2026, including one free retake. That's about ₦606,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026). Your bank may add card charges, and the Linux Foundation sometimes runs discounts, so check the official CNCF page before paying.

Should I take the KCNA or go straight to the CKA?

Go straight to the CKA if you already know Linux and Docker. CNCF describes the KCNA as a pre-professional exam for newcomers. It's a reasonable confidence builder, but employers weight the hands-on CKA much more heavily.

Do I need a degree for remote Kubernetes jobs?

Not always, but some employers ask for one. Both Canonical ads we checked asked for a bachelor's degree "or equivalent" in computer science, STEM or similar. Many infrastructure teams care more about demonstrable production skills, so strong projects and certifications can offset the lack of a degree with some employers.

Is Kubernetes good for beginners looking for remote work?

It's a poor first remote job target. Kubernetes sits on top of Linux, networking and containers, and most remote ads want mid-level production experience. Beginners do better to build those foundations first, perhaps through a cloud or IT support role, and add Kubernetes after that.

What programming language should a Kubernetes engineer learn?

Learn Bash and Python first for automation, then Go. Kubernetes and much of its tooling are written in Go, and roles that build operators, such as Canonical's senior Kubernetes role, ask for Go fluency.

How do remote employers handle on-call for engineers in Nigeria?

They usually fit you into a rotation based on your time zone. Lagos (UTC+1) overlaps closely with European working hours. For US teams, Lagos daytime covers US night hours, which suits some "follow the sun" rotations. Ask about on-call frequency and pay before accepting an offer.

How can I practise Kubernetes without spending dollars on cloud?

Run a local cluster with kind, Minikube or k3s on your laptop, or k3s on a few old machines. The Linux Foundation's free LFS158 course includes Minikube labs. Use paid cloud clusters only for short projects, and destroy them afterwards.

Key takeaways

  • Remote Kubernetes work is mostly advertised as DevOps, platform, SRE or cloud roles, so search all of those titles.
  • Employers expect Linux, networking, containers, one managed cloud, Terraform, GitOps and observability alongside core Kubernetes.
  • The CKA ($445, about ₦606,000 as of October 2026) is the most useful first certification for operations-focused roles. The CKAD suits developers.
  • Ads open to Nigeria exist, such as a worldwide Canonical role in October 2026, but Europe-only and US-only ads are more common. Read every location line.
  • A homelab that survives power cuts, documented on GitHub with incident write-ups, is the most convincing proof you can build from Nigeria.

Next steps

Start with the free LFS158 course and a local cluster, then book the CKA when you can troubleshoot a broken pod without notes.
