You can find remote network engineer jobs from Nigeria, but you have to search by the right titles and read the location line before anything else. Network work is harder to do remotely than software work, because many employers still need someone who can reach a rack, a branch office or a customer site.
The good news is that a growing share of networking now happens through software. Monitoring, configuration through code, cloud networks and automation can all be done from a laptop in Lagos, Enugu or Kano. Those are the roles worth chasing.
This guide covers which network titles are most often remote, what location tags like "EMEA" and "GMT +/- 1" mean for you, where to look, which certificates and skills employers ask for, what the pay figures really tell you, and the Nigerian setup you need before your first on-call shift. Network administrators get their own section, because the job hunt works a little differently for them.
Quick answer
To find remote network engineer jobs from Nigeria, search for software-heavy network titles (network automation engineer, cloud network engineer, NOC engineer, network operations engineer) rather than just "network engineer". Filter for ads open to Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide, and check every ad's country list and working hours. Employers usually want a CCNA or equivalent, Python or Ansible for automation, and some cloud networking (AWS or Azure).
Can a network engineer work remotely from Nigeria?
Yes, if the role is mostly configuration, monitoring, design or automation, and the employer accepts people living in Nigeria. Field roles that involve cabling, racking switches or visiting sites cannot be done from another country, whatever the ad calls itself.
Three facts make remote network jobs tougher to land than remote developer jobs:
- Physical access. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes network and computer systems administrators as people who install, configure and maintain an organisation's networks and systems. The "install" part often needs hands on hardware.
- Out-of-hours work. The same BLS profile says administrators may work evenings, nights or weekends to monitor or update systems. Maintenance windows are set to the employer's quiet hours, which might be 2am in Lagos for a US company.
- Security and compliance. Network engineers get privileged access to firewalls, routers and VPN gateways. Many companies only give that access to people in countries where they have a legal entity, can run background checks, or where customers' contracts allow it.
So the job hunt is mostly about filtering. Skip roles that are only remote within the US or UK, and focus on the ones whose work truly happens over SSH, APIs and dashboards.
Which network roles are most often remote
The title on the ad tells you a lot about whether the work is remote-friendly. This table is our own guide, based on what the roles involve. It is not a count of listings.
| Role title to search | Why it can be remote | What employers usually ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Network automation engineer | Work is code: Python, Ansible, APIs | Python, Git, a vendor cert |
| Cloud network engineer | Networks live in AWS, Azure or Google Cloud | VPC/VNet design, Terraform |
| NOC engineer / network operations engineer | Monitoring and remote fault fixing | Shift work, ticketing, CCNA level |
| Network security engineer | Firewall rules managed centrally | Palo Alto, Fortinet, Check Point |
| SD-WAN or managed network engineer (MSP) | Customer networks managed from a portal | Cisco Meraki, Fortinet, VeloCloud-style tools |
| Field network engineer | Rarely remote from abroad | On-site visits in the employer's country |
Two neighbouring routes are worth knowing about. If you're coming from helpdesk work, our guide to remote IT support jobs for beginners shows the usual first step. If servers interest you more than switches, see remote systems administrator jobs.
Network automation is the strongest remote route
Automation roles are the most remote-friendly because the output is code, and code can be reviewed from anywhere. A Wave Mobile Money network engineer ad we opened (now closed: it was removed on 27 November 2025) listed Python for automation and Puppet and Ansible for orchestration, alongside Palo Alto and Sophos firewalls and Cisco, HPE and Aruba switching and wireless. Plenty of ads ask for a similar mix: vendor hardware knowledge plus scripting.
If you know routing and switching but can't write a Python script that logs into twenty devices and pulls their configs, that's the gap to close first.
Cloud networking overlaps with cloud engineering
A cloud network engineer designs virtual networks, subnets, VPNs, load balancers and peering inside AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. The work is fully remote by nature. It sits close to cloud engineering, so read the cloud engineer career guide for the wider skill set, and our planned guide on moving from IT support into remote cloud engineering for the path.
Remote network administrator jobs for international candidates
A network administrator usually runs and maintains an existing network: user access, patching, backups of device configs, monitoring, first-line troubleshooting. A network engineer usually designs, builds and changes networks. In practice, smaller companies use the two titles for the same job, and BLS groups network and computer systems administrators together in one occupation.
For international candidates, the administrator title has two catches:
- It's often tied to one office. Many "network administrator" ads come from a single company with one headquarters, so the person is expected nearby. Those ads tend to say "hybrid" or name a city.
- It's often merged with systems administration. Expect Windows Server, Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365 and backup tools alongside networking.
The administrator roles that are open to people abroad usually sit at managed service providers (MSPs), which look after many clients' networks from a central team, and at companies with offices in several countries that run a central IT operations team. Search "network administrator" together with "MSP", "managed services", "NOC" or "remote monitoring", and you'll find more remote-friendly ads than with the bare title.
How to read the location line on a network job ad
Read the location and eligibility text before the job description. For network roles it's the step most likely to rule you out, and the most likely to be misread.
Country-locked "remote" is the norm in Europe and the US
On 27 October 2026 we opened a Remote Rocketship page of remote network engineer jobs in Europe. Every role on it was tied to one country: Network Engineer II at Astreya in Ireland, Senior Network Engineer at GXO in the UK, roles at Tieto in Poland, a HumanIT role in Portugal, and so on. "Remote" there means remote within that country. A Nigerian resident can't take those jobs without the right to work in that country.
Network vendor NetBrain's own Greenhouse board showed the same pattern when we checked in October 2026: its Senior Network Automation Engineer role was "United States, Remote", while its network development roles were hybrid in Hyderabad, India.
Offshore network hiring often goes to other countries
On the first page of DailyRemote's remote network engineer listings on 27 October 2026, most of the 30 jobs were US-only. One was tagged "Worldwide". The others named Mexico, Colombia, Pakistan, the Philippines, India, Germany, Singapore and a group of Latin American countries. Companies do hire network people offshore, but Nigeria isn't on many default lists yet. That's a reason to search Africa-focused employers and "worldwide" roles carefully, not a reason to give up.
Time-zone lines can open the door
Some ads care about your hours more than your passport. The closed Wave ad mentioned above said remote work required working hours aligned with GMT +/- 1, reliable internet and work authorisation, and it involved travel to the company's African markets. Lagos runs on WAT (UTC+1) all year, so "GMT +/- 1" fits Nigeria perfectly.
That same ad also shows why you read the ad text and not the board's summary. The aggregator's header said "Hiring Remotely in USA", while the ad itself described Africa travel and GMT-aligned hours. When the two disagree, trust the employer's own text and ask the recruiter.
Location tags and what they mean for you
| Tag in the ad | What it usually means | Can you apply from Nigeria? |
|---|---|---|
| Remote (US) / Remote (UK) | Must live and be allowed to work there | No, unless you do |
| EMEA | Europe, Middle East and Africa | Often, but check the country list |
| Africa / named African countries | Africa-based team | Only if Nigeria is listed or not excluded |
| GMT +/- 2 or CET hours | Time-zone rule | Usually yes, WAT fits |
| Worldwide / anywhere | No country rule | Yes, confirm with the recruiter |
Our planned explainers on what EMEA means in a remote job description and how to check whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents go further. One useful habit: Wave's careers page in October 2026 listed a Senior Security Engineer role in Ghana, Kenya, Spain and the UK. An Africa-focused company doesn't automatically mean Nigeria. Read the actual list.
Where to search for remote network engineer jobs
Use several kinds of sources. Each one finds different employers.
Job boards and their filters
- WorkRemote.ng's tech job listings. Each listing shows the company, its website and where applicants may live, so you can check eligibility before you open the ad. Search "network", "NOC" or "infrastructure".
- General remote boards such as DailyRemote and Remote Rocketship. They're useful for spotting which companies hire network people remotely, but most of their listings are country-locked, so filter hard.
- Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby job boards. Many tech companies post on these systems. A Google search like
site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "network engineer" remote EMEAorsite:jobs.lever.co "network" remote Africabrings up the employer's own ad, which is more reliable than a copy on an aggregator.
Employer types worth targeting
Go after organisations whose networks span several countries or live in the cloud:
- Managed service providers and network operations centres that monitor clients' networks around the clock and staff shifts across time zones.
- Africa-focused fintechs, telecoms and data-centre operators that run networks in several African countries and often prefer engineers in African time zones.
- Networking and security vendors that hire support engineers, professional services engineers and automation engineers by region.
- Cloud-native SaaS companies whose "network" is entirely VPCs, load balancers and DNS.
Check each company's careers page directly and confirm the country list on the live ad. Eligibility changes, and an employer that hired in Africa last year may not this year.
Search strings that work better than "network engineer"
Swap the bare title for these and you'll see more remote-friendly results:
- "network automation engineer" remote
- "NOC engineer" OR "network operations" remote EMEA
- "cloud network engineer" remote
- "network reliability engineer" OR "NRE"
- "network engineer" "GMT" OR "CET hours"
- "network administrator" MSP remote
Skills and certifications remote network employers ask for
Remote employers can't watch you work, so they rely on certificates, a visible portfolio and a technical interview. Aim to cover all three.
Certifications
| Certificate | Provider | What it shows | Cost (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCNA (exam 200-301) | Cisco | Core routing, switching, security, automation basics | $300 (about ₦408,600) |
| Network+ (N10-009) | CompTIA | Vendor-neutral networking fundamentals | Not listed on CompTIA's page |
| Cloud networking certs | AWS, Microsoft, Google | Networking inside a cloud platform | Check the provider's page |
Naira figure converted at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). Pearson VUE may add local tax.
Cisco's CCNA page lists one 120-minute exam, no prerequisites and three years of validity. The topics include network fundamentals, IP connectivity, IP services, security fundamentals and "automation and programmability". The same page points to free courses through Cisco Networking Academy and free study material on the Cisco Learning Network, which is the cheapest way to prepare from Nigeria.
CompTIA's Network+ page describes the N10-009 exam as up to 90 questions in 90 minutes. It recommends about 9 to 12 months of hands-on experience as a junior network administrator or support technician. If you'll be paying for one exam, CCNA is the one more network ads name. Our planned guide to the IT certifications that help most with remote jobs compares the wider options.
Skills that separate remote candidates
- Scripting: Python with Netmiko or NAPALM-style libraries, plus Ansible playbooks for config changes.
- Version control: Git, so your network changes can be reviewed like code.
- Cloud networking: AWS VPC, Azure Virtual Network, VPN gateways, DNS.
- Firewalls and security: Palo Alto, Fortinet or Check Point rule management.
- Monitoring: reading dashboards and alerts, writing clear incident notes.
- Written English: remote teams depend on tickets, change requests and handover notes.
Build proof you can show
Set up a home lab using open-source emulators such as GNS3 or Containerlab, or Cisco Packet Tracer through Networking Academy. Then publish the work on GitHub:
- An Ansible playbook that backs up configs from several virtual routers.
- A Python script that checks interface status and writes a report.
- A Terraform file that builds a small AWS VPC with public and private subnets.
Example (hypothetical): a Port Harcourt engineer with two years of on-site work at an ISP adds a GitHub repo with three automation scripts and a short README for each, then applies to NOC and automation roles. The repo gives remote interviewers something concrete to ask about, which a CV line saying "familiar with automation" can't do.
What remote network engineer pay figures actually mean
Treat published pay figures as benchmarks, not offers. What you're paid depends on the employer's country, whether it pays by location, and the contract type: contractor or employee.
- US benchmark. BLS puts the median annual wage for network and computer systems administrators at $99,130 in May 2025, with the lowest 10% under $62,640 and the highest 10% above $155,050. That's pay for workers in the US. A Nigeria-based remote hire will usually be offered less.
- European job ads. On the Remote Rocketship page we opened on 27 October 2026, Astreya's Network Engineer II role in Ireland advertised €50.6k to €63.3k a year, and a HumanIT network role in Portugal advertised €2.3k to €3k a month. These are published ranges for people in those countries.
- Global-pay employers. The closed Wave ad offered up to $166,900 plus equity, paid in the local-currency equivalent. That was a senior role asking for at least five years of network engineering across international sites, and pay in local currency matters if you want dollars.
BLS also projects US employment in this occupation to fall 4% between 2025 and 2035, with about 13,400 openings a year coming from people leaving the role. Read that as a sign to move towards automation and cloud networking, where demand is less tied to on-site administration.
Before you accept any offer, check the currency, your employment status (contractor or employee), and how the money reaches you. Our guides on contractor versus EOR employee status and receiving dollar payments in Nigeria explain both. Tax on that income is covered in tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
A step-by-step plan for your search
- Pick two target titles from the table above, for example "NOC engineer" and "network automation engineer". Don't spread yourself across every networking title.
- Close the biggest gap. If you have no certificate, start CCNA preparation through Networking Academy. If you have a CCNA but no scripting, build the three GitHub projects described above.
- Rewrite your CV around outcomes. "Cut branch outage tickets by migrating 14 sites to SD-WAN" beats "responsible for WAN". Name vendors, device counts and tools.
- Set up searches on job boards and Google
site:searches for your two titles, with EMEA, Africa, worldwide and GMT filters. - Check eligibility first on every ad: country list, time-zone rule, work authorisation, travel.
- Apply directly on the employer's own page wherever you can, and keep a simple spreadsheet of company, role, date and status.
- Prepare for a live technical interview. Expect subnetting, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), VLANs, a troubleshooting scenario and possibly a short automation task.
Nigerian setup for remote network work
Network roles punish downtime more than most remote jobs. If you're on call and the firewall at a client's office goes down at 3am, your NEPA situation is not an acceptable excuse.
- Power: an inverter with enough battery to cover a full on-call shift, plus solar or a generator as backup. Know your DisCo tariff band and how many hours of supply it really gives you.
- Internet: two independent connections, for example fibre plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network. Starlink is available in Nigeria; check the current price before you budget for it.
- Time zones: UK hours line up well (London is on GMT from 25 October 2026, so Lagos is one hour ahead in winter and level in summer). US Eastern is 6 hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026, so US maintenance windows can fall in the middle of your night.
- Security hygiene: a dedicated work laptop, full-disk encryption, and two-factor authentication on everything. Employers giving you privileged network access will ask about this.
- Identity documents: keep your NIN, a valid international passport and proof of address ready for background checks and EOR onboarding.
Common mistakes and scams to avoid
- Applying to country-locked roles. It wastes your time and can mark you as careless in the employer's applicant tracking system.
- Listing only hardware skills. Remote hiring managers want to see scripting and cloud skills next to routing and switching.
- Ignoring the on-call clause. Ask how often you'd be on call, at what hours in WAT, and whether it's paid.
- Paying to get hired. No genuine employer charges for a CCNA "sponsorship", laptop or onboarding kit before hiring you. Requests for upfront fees, or for your BVN and bank logins early in the process, are warning signs. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the patterns.
- Trusting copies of ads. Aggregator pages go out of date. Two Lagos/Remote network ads we tried to open for this guide had already gone. Always click through to the employer's own page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a remote network engineer job from Nigeria without a CCNA?
Yes, but it's harder. Many network ads name CCNA or equivalent knowledge, and without it you'll need strong proof elsewhere, such as years of documented experience, a vendor certificate from another company, or a public automation portfolio. If you're early in your career, the CCNA is the best-value single exam.
Are remote network administrator jobs open to international candidates?
Some are, mostly at managed service providers, network operations centres and companies with a central IT team covering several countries. Single-office companies usually want their administrator nearby. Search "network administrator" with "MSP", "NOC" or "remote monitoring" and check every ad's country list.
What does "GMT +/- 1" mean in a network job ad?
It means the employer wants your working hours to fall within one hour of Greenwich Mean Time. Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year, so Lagos time fits that rule. A time-zone rule isn't a country rule, so still confirm the company can hire people living in Nigeria.
How much does the CCNA exam cost in naira?
Cisco lists the CCNA 200-301 exam at $300 as of October 2026. That's about ₦408,600 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM rate, 23 October 2026), and Pearson VUE may add tax. Free preparation courses are available through Cisco Networking Academy.
Is network engineering a good remote career for Nigerians?
It can be, if you move towards automation, cloud networking or network operations. Pure on-site administration is shrinking in the US (BLS projects a 4% decline from 2025 to 2035) and is hard to do from abroad. Engineers who script and work in the cloud have far more remote options.
Do remote network engineers have to work night shifts?
Often, for NOC and on-call roles. Maintenance windows follow the employer's quiet hours, and US-based quiet hours fall overnight in Lagos. Ask about shift patterns and on-call pay before you accept, and look at employers in European or African time zones if you want daytime hours.
Will I be hired as an employee or a contractor?
It depends on the employer. Companies with a Nigerian entity or an employer of record (EOR) can hire you as an employee, and others will offer a contractor agreement. The difference affects benefits, tax and how you're paid, so read our guide to contractor and employee status before you sign.
Key takeaways
- Network engineering can be done remotely from Nigeria when the role is mostly automation, cloud networking, monitoring or remote operations, not field work.
- Search specific titles such as network automation engineer, cloud network engineer and NOC engineer instead of only "network engineer".
- Most remote network ads in Europe and the US are locked to one country, so read the location and time-zone lines first.
- A CCNA ($300 as of October 2026) plus a public portfolio of Python, Ansible or Terraform work makes a remote application much stronger.
- US pay figures from BLS are benchmarks only. Check the currency, the employment type and the payout route on any offer.
- Reliable backup power and two internet connections aren't optional for on-call network work.
