Remote IT project manager jobs are open to experienced Nigerians, but most of them sit under other names: technical project manager, implementation project manager, delivery manager or technical program manager. Foreign employers will hire a Lagos-based PM when the ad allows your location, your working hours overlap with the team's, and you can prove delivery with numbers rather than duties.
That last point matters most. A remote employer can't watch you run a room, so they judge you on evidence: what shipped, on what budget, against what deadline, with how many people across how many time zones.
This guide is for people who already run projects, whether software releases, core banking upgrades, network rollouts or ERP go-lives. It covers the job titles to search for, how to read location rules in real October 2026 ads, which certificates help and what PMP costs in naira, US pay benchmarks and why your offer will be lower, time-zone trade-offs, and how to turn your experience into a CV that gets shortlisted.
Quick answer
Yes, Nigerians can get remote IT project manager jobs, mostly as contractors or through an employer of record, with SaaS vendors, software agencies, managed service providers and talent firms. Expect to need about three to ten years of delivery experience, fluency with Jira or a similar tool, Agile and Scrum knowledge, and often PMP or a comparable certificate. Before you apply, confirm that the ad itself, not just the job board's tag, accepts applicants living in Nigeria.
What a remote IT project manager does, and the titles to search
A remote IT project manager plans and controls technology work (software builds, system migrations, infrastructure rollouts, client implementations) so it lands on time, on budget and in scope. The main tools are the plan, the risk log, the status report and the stakeholder update. Most of the job is written communication, which is why it works remotely.
The problem for job seekers is the title. Few companies advertise "IT Project Manager" for remote roles. Search all of these:
| Title in the ad | What it usually means | Typical employer |
|---|---|---|
| Technical Project Manager | Runs engineering delivery, works closely with developers | SaaS, agencies, dev shops |
| Implementation Project Manager | Gets paying clients live on a software product | B2B software vendors |
| Delivery Manager | Owns outcomes for one or more client accounts | Agencies, consultancies |
| Technical Program Manager | Coordinates several related projects across teams | Larger tech firms |
| Agile Delivery Lead or Scrum Master | Runs the team's process rather than the whole project | Product teams |
| IT Project Manager | Infrastructure, network or internal systems projects | MSPs, enterprises |
How this differs from neighbouring roles
A product manager decides what gets built and why. An IT project manager makes sure it gets built. If your strength is roadmaps and customer discovery, see our guide to high-paying remote product management jobs. If you're a technical leader who also designs the systems, the solutions architect route may fit better.
A Scrum Master looks after the team's Agile process and doesn't own budget or scope. Many Nigerian PMs combine both roles, and our Scrum Master career guide covers that path. For general PM skills, tools and courses, start with our remote project manager career guide. The rest of this article assumes you already have the basics.
Why experience matters more here than in most remote roles
Entry-level remote PM jobs are rare, and that's partly about trust. A company hiring a PM in another country is handing over its deadlines, its client relationships and sometimes its budget to someone it has met only on video. It reduces that risk by asking for a track record.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says computer and information systems managers, the US occupation group that covers senior IT project and programme leaders, typically need five years or more of related work experience plus a bachelor's degree in computer science or IT. Remote ads we opened in October 2026 ask for similar levels:
- A software implementation PM role at Makersite asked for at least three years managing software implementations (listing on Himalayas, checked 27 October 2026).
- A Principal Program Manager role at Allshore Talent, for generative AI implementation, asked for more than ten years of programme or project management, including at least five on enterprise software or digital transformation (listing on Himalayas, checked 27 October 2026).
The honest summary: with under three years of hands-on delivery, you'll compete better for project coordinator roles first. With five or more years, including at least one project involving people outside Nigeria, you're in the main remote market.
Who hires Nigerian IT project managers remotely
Not every type of company hires across borders. These four employer types are where Nigeria-based PMs have the clearest openings, based on the ads we reviewed and on how these businesses work:
- B2B software vendors with implementation teams. They sell a platform and need PMs to take each new client from contract to go-live. The work is repeatable, documented and often spread across client time zones.
- Software agencies and dev shops. They run several client builds at once and often staff engineering teams internationally, so a PM in Lagos is nothing unusual.
- Talent and staffing firms. They hire experienced people and place them with US or European clients. Allshore Talent's October 2026 ad is an example of this model.
- Managed service providers (MSPs). They run IT for other businesses and need PMs for network, security or hardware rollouts. One October 2026 ad from Support Tech, for a technical project manager in CCTV and networking, was tagged "Anywhere in the World" on Remote Rocketship's Nigeria page, though the employer's own Zoho Recruit page just said "Remote Job" and didn't name any countries.
African startups and pan-African fintechs hire too, often on more familiar hours. Large US banks and government contractors rarely do, because their projects tend to require US residence or security clearance.
Reading location rules in IT project manager ads
This is where most applications are wasted. Job aggregators tag ads automatically, and those tags can be wrong.
Example from a live ad (checked 27 October 2026): On Himalayas, the Makersite implementation PM role carried the label "Open to candidates from all countries", but the job's requirements said applicants must be "residing in and legally permitted to work in the EU". A Lagos-based applicant would be rejected however strong their CV. The ad text wins over the board's tag every time.
The Allshore Talent role went the other way. It was listed as 100% remote, open to applicants "Anywhere", and nothing in the requirements contradicted that.
| Wording in the ad | What it means for you in Nigeria |
|---|---|
| Worldwide, Anywhere, Global | Usually open; still check the hours and the contract type |
| EMEA | Often includes Nigeria, sometimes means only the UK or EU entities |
| EU, UK, US or Canada only | Normally closed unless you already have work rights there |
| No countries named | Ask the recruiter before you invest hours in an application |
| Must overlap with EST or PST | Open in principle, but you'll work evenings in Lagos |
Our guides on what EMEA means in a remote job ad and what "worldwide remote" means from Nigeria go further. If you're unsure about a specific vacancy, follow our steps for checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.
Certifications: PMP, PRINCE2 and Agile
A certificate won't replace a track record, but in remote hiring it helps a recruiter who has never heard of your former employer believe your experience. Ads often list it as preferred rather than required: the Makersite ad preferred "a professional project management certification", and the Allshore ad preferred programme or Agile certifications.
PMP (Project Management Professional)
PMP, awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI), is the certificate most often named in US-facing ads. PMI sets a minimum number of months of documented project leadership (more if you don't have a four-year degree) and requires formal project management training before you can sit the exam. Read the current handbook on pmi.org before you pay for anything, because the rules and fees change.
PMI's own fee page wouldn't open for us, so these figures come from a third-party summary (PM Study Circle, April 2026) and should be checked on pmi.org. It reported the exam at about $405 for PMI members and $655 for non-members, rising from August 2026 to about $445 for members and $675 for non-members. Membership was about $139 a year plus a one-time $10 application fee.
Worked cost (third-party figures, ₦1,362 to $1, CBN NFEM rate, 23 October 2026):
| Route | Dollars | Naira (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Non-member exam | $675 | ₦919,000 |
| Member exam plus first-year membership and application fee | $594 | ₦809,000 |
| Member retake, if needed | about $275 | ₦375,000 |
Joining PMI first comes out about ₦110,000 cheaper and gives you access to PMI's materials. Training courses are extra, and their prices vary widely.
PRINCE2, Agile and Scrum
PRINCE2 is better known in UK and European public-sector and enterprise work. Foundation must be passed before Practitioner. We couldn't find an official current price we could open, so check with PeopleCert or an accredited provider. For product and software teams, Scrum and SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) credentials often matter more than PMP, which is why the Allshore ad named Scrum@Scale, SAFe, Disciplined Agile and LeSS.
If you're choosing one, here's a simple rule: PMP for US clients and enterprise IT, PRINCE2 for UK clients, Scrum for software product teams. We compare more options in our guide to IT certifications that help land remote jobs.
Pay: US benchmarks and what applies in Nigeria
No reliable public source publishes what Nigeria-based IT project managers earn remotely, so treat any single figure you see online with suspicion. What we can give you is the US benchmark and how it usually translates.
| US benchmark (BLS, May 2025) | Median a year | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Project management specialists | $102,320 | Lowest 10% under $61,580, highest 10% over $167,970 |
| Computer and information systems managers | $175,140 | Includes senior IT leadership, not only PMs |
These are pay figures for people working in the US. They aren't what a company will offer someone in Lagos. Most foreign employers set pay by location band or hire through talent firms whose model depends on paying less than US rates. Expect a fraction of the US figure, with the gap narrowing as you move to senior, worldwide-band companies or direct contracts with US clients. BLS also projects project management specialist jobs in the US to grow 7% from 2025 to 2035, which signals steady demand for the skill even though it says nothing about offers to Nigeria.
Many remote ads, including both Himalayas ads above, don't publish a salary. For role-specific figures in dollars and naira, see our project manager salary guide, and for the wider picture, our guide to high-paying remote jobs for experienced professionals.
Example (hypothetical): A Lagos PM is offered $3,000 a month as a contractor. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM rate, 23 October 2026), that's about ₦4,086,000 a month before withdrawal fees, tax and the cost of running your own power and internet. As a contractor you also get no paid leave unless the contract says so, so compare offers on yearly take-home pay, not the monthly headline.
Time zones: the hidden filter for PM roles
Time zones matter more for a project manager than for most remote roles. A developer can work asynchronously; the PM usually runs the stand-up, the client call and the escalation. So check which hours the team works, not just which country it's in.
| Team hours (9am to 5pm local) | Your hours in Lagos (WAT, UTC+1) |
|---|---|
| London, winter (GMT) | 10am to 6pm |
| London, summer (BST) | 9am to 5pm |
| Central Europe, summer (CEST) | 8am to 4pm |
| US Eastern, winter (EST, from 1 November 2026) | 3pm to 11pm |
| US Eastern, summer (EDT) | 2pm to 10pm |
| US Pacific, winter (PST) | 6pm to 2am |
| Dubai (UTC+4) | 6am to 2pm |
UK and European teams are the easiest fit. US East Coast work is doable if you accept afternoons and evenings, and many US companies only need four hours of overlap, so ask. Full US Pacific hours are hard to sustain alongside life in Nigeria, and a lot of PMs who try them burn out within a year.
Interviewers will ask how you handle this. Have a concrete answer ready: your core overlap hours, how you hand over to colleagues in other time zones, and the written updates you send so nobody waits on you.
Turn your experience into remote-ready evidence
Experienced Nigerian PMs often lose out not because they lack experience but because their CVs describe duties. "Responsible for project planning and stakeholder management" tells a recruiter nothing. Show outcomes.
Rewrite CV bullets as delivery results
Example (hypothetical): Instead of "Managed core banking upgrade project", write "Led a 9-month core banking migration for 1.2 million accounts across 14 branches; cut planned downtime from 48 to 11 hours; delivered 4% under a $600,000 budget with a 22-person team across Lagos and Pune."
Every bullet should answer at least two of these questions: how big, how fast, how much money, how many people, and what changed. Name the methodology (Scrum, Kanban, waterfall, hybrid) and the tools (Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps, Smartsheet, MS Project, Asana). Our guide to project management software for remote teams covers which tools employers use.
Build a small delivery portfolio
Foreign recruiters can't call your former boss easily, so give them artefacts. Anonymise three or four of these, remove client names and figures you aren't allowed to share, and keep them as a shared folder or PDF:
- A one-page project summary: goal, scope, team, timeline, result
- A status report you sent to executives
- A RAID log (risks, assumptions, issues, dependencies) or risk register extract
- A sprint or release plan, or a Gantt chart for an infrastructure project
- A short lessons-learned note from a project that went wrong
The last one carries weight. Hiring managers want PMs who can explain a missed deadline calmly and say what they changed.
Highlight cross-border work
If you've worked with a vendor in India, a client in the UK or a head office in South Africa, say so plainly in the bullet. International coordination is the closest thing to remote PM experience, and many ads screen for it.
A six-week plan to get interviews
- Week 1: Decide your lane. Choose one or two titles from the table above that match your history, such as implementation PM for SaaS or IT PM for infrastructure. Generic applications get ignored.
- Week 1: Set your hours. Decide which time zones you'll accept. This filters ads quickly.
- Week 2: Rebuild the CV and LinkedIn. Outcome bullets, tools and methodology named, certificates listed with dates. Change your LinkedIn headline to the exact title you're targeting.
- Week 2 to 3: Assemble the portfolio. Three or four anonymised artefacts, plus a two-minute recorded walkthrough of one project if you're comfortable on camera.
- Week 3 onwards: Apply where the ad text allows Nigeria. Read requirements, not tags. Aim for fewer, tailored applications, each naming a project similar to theirs.
- Week 3 onwards: Contact hiring managers directly. Delivery and implementation leads on LinkedIn often respond to a short note that names a relevant result.
- Week 4 to 6: Prepare for the case interview. Expect scenarios like "the client wants a new feature two weeks before go-live" or "your lead developer just resigned." Practise with our project manager interview questions.
- Before you sign: Check the offer. Contract type, payment currency and schedule, notice period, equipment and hours. Our list of questions to ask before accepting a remote offer helps here.
If you're aiming at leading engineers rather than delivery, our guide to remote engineering manager jobs covers that different track.
Nigerian setup: power, internet, contracts and pay
A PM who drops off the client call twice a week won't last, whatever their CV says.
- Power: Your grid supply depends on your DisCo tariff band, and even Band A fails. Have an inverter or solar system that covers your laptop, router and a light for a full working day, with a generator as last resort.
- Internet: Use two independent connections, for example fibre or Starlink as your main line and a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network as backup. Test your failover before you need it.
- Contract type: Most foreign companies hire Nigerians as independent contractors or through an employer of record (EOR). The difference affects leave, notice and tax. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employee arrangements explains it.
- Getting paid: Contractor pay usually arrives through Deel, Remote.com, Payoneer, Wise or a dollar receiving account. Fees and limits differ, so read our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria.
- Tax: Foreign income is not automatically tax-free. Our guide to tax for remote workers under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 covers what applies.
- Identity documents: Keep your NIN, international passport and BVN-linked accounts in order. EOR onboarding and payment platforms will ask for them.
Red flags in remote project manager ads
Project management is a common cover for fake jobs because the title sounds senior and vague. Be careful when:
- The "client" wants you to buy software licences, equipment or "training" before you start
- You're asked to receive money into your account and forward it to "suppliers"
- The interview happens only on Telegram or WhatsApp text, with no video call and no named hiring manager
- The pay is far above the BLS benchmarks for a role asking little experience
- The company has no website, or the website doesn't list the role on its own careers page
Real employers never charge you to apply or to be hired. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the wider patterns.
Frequently asked questions
Can Nigerians get remote IT project manager jobs with foreign companies?
Yes, when the ad accepts applicants living in Nigeria and your hours can overlap with the team's. Many such roles are worldwide or EMEA contractor positions with software vendors, agencies, MSPs and talent firms. Always confirm eligibility in the ad text itself, because job-board tags are sometimes wrong.
How many years of experience do remote IT project manager jobs require?
Usually three to ten years, depending on seniority. In October 2026 ads, a software implementation PM role asked for three or more years, and a principal programme manager role asked for ten or more. With under three years of delivery, project coordinator roles are a more realistic first step.
Do I need PMP to get a remote IT project manager job?
No, but it helps, especially with US clients. Most of the ads we reviewed listed certification as preferred, not required. A strong record with measurable results matters more, and Scrum or SAFe credentials may count for more than PMP with software product teams.
How much does the PMP exam cost in naira?
About ₦809,000 for the member route (exam plus first-year PMI membership) or about ₦919,000 as a non-member. These are based on third-party figures from April 2026 and the CBN rate of ₦1,362 to $1 on 23 October 2026. Confirm current fees on pmi.org before paying.
What is the difference between an IT project manager and a technical program manager?
An IT project manager runs one defined project with a start, an end and a budget. A technical program manager coordinates several related projects or teams towards a bigger goal, usually at larger companies. Program roles normally ask for more seniority and broader technical knowledge.
Can I work US hours as an IT project manager from Lagos?
Yes, but it means afternoons and late evenings. US Eastern office hours run from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos in winter and 2pm to 10pm in summer, and Pacific hours go past midnight. Many US companies need only partial overlap, so ask what the core hours are before accepting.
Is a remote IT project manager job paid in dollars?
Usually, when the employer is foreign. Pay normally arrives in dollars through a platform like Deel, Remote.com or Payoneer, or by transfer into a domiciliary account. The amount is typically below US local pay for the same title.
Key takeaways
- Remote IT project management roles are often advertised as technical, implementation or delivery project manager, so search those titles too.
- Experience is the entry ticket: plan for three or more years of measurable delivery, and ten or more for principal and programme roles.
- Read the ad's requirements, not the job board's location tag; one October 2026 ad tagged "all countries" actually required EU residence.
- PMP helps most with US clients and costs roughly ₦809,000 to ₦919,000 for the exam (third-party fee figures, October 2026 rate); PRINCE2 and Scrum suit other markets.
- US medians of $102,320 to $175,140 (BLS, May 2025) are benchmarks, not what you'll be offered from Nigeria.
- For a PM, time-zone overlap and reliable power and internet are part of the job, not extras.
