Three serious partners watching presentation on digital tablet

Remote solutions architect jobs usually ask for five or more years in software, infrastructure or cloud work, real design experience on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, and the ability to explain technical trade-offs to clients. You can do the job from Nigeria, but it is a senior role and rarely a first remote job.

That matters because many Nigerians see "Solutions Architect" on a job board, notice the pay, and apply with two years of experience and a fresh certificate. It rarely works. Employers hire architects to make expensive design decisions on their behalf, so they look for people who have already made such decisions.

This guide covers what employers actually ask for, as of October 2026: the experience, technical skills, certifications and what they cost in naira, the travel clauses that catch Nigerian passport holders out, and how to read "EMEA" and "worldwide" in an ad. It ends with a realistic route into the role from a Nigerian IT career.

Quick answer

To qualify for remote solutions architect jobs, most employers want several years as a developer, cloud engineer or systems engineer. They also want hands-on design work on a major cloud, networking and security knowledge, strong written and spoken English, and comfort presenting to clients. A certification such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect helps but doesn't replace experience. From Nigeria, target ads marked worldwide or open to your region, and check any travel requirement.

What a remote solutions architect actually does

A solutions architect designs the system that solves a specific business problem. The job is to choose the cloud services, databases, integrations and security controls, then write and defend that design. Engineers build it, usually with the architect checking that the build matches the plan.

The title covers three different jobs, and the requirements differ for each.

TypeWhere you workWhat employers stress
Pre-sales or customer-facingSoftware vendors (cloud, DevOps, data tools)Demos, proofs of concept, presenting, travel
Delivery or consultingConsultancies, cloud partnersDeep build skills, client projects, documentation
InternalBanks, fintechs, product companiesSystems design, governance, working with engineering teams

Most remote openings open to people outside the US are pre-sales roles at software vendors, because vendors sell across many countries and need architects in many regions. If you prefer quiet design work to customer calls, read each ad's responsibilities before you apply.

People often confuse solutions architects with solutions engineers. A solutions engineer usually focuses on pre-sales demos and technical selling, while an architect owns the design. Many vendors blur the two titles. Our guide on getting a remote solutions engineer job covers the sales-engineering side, and enterprise architect jobs covers the more senior, organisation-wide version of the role.

Experience requirements: why this is rarely a first remote job

Expect to need around five years of relevant work before employers take your application seriously. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has no separate category for solutions architects. For the closest occupation it profiles, computer network architects, its Occupational Outlook Handbook lists five years or more of experience in a related occupation, such as systems administration or systems analysis, as typical.

The certification bodies say the same thing in their own way. AWS recommends at least a year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions before the Associate-level Solutions Architect exam, and two or more years before the Professional-level exam. Google recommends more than three years of industry experience, including at least one year on Google Cloud, before its Professional Cloud Architect exam.

Which earlier jobs count

Employers accept a few common backgrounds:

  • Backend or full-stack developer who has designed services, APIs and databases, not just implemented tickets
  • Cloud, DevOps or site reliability engineer who has built production infrastructure
  • Systems or network administrator who has moved workloads into the cloud
  • Technical support or support engineer at a software company who has grown into implementation work

If you're earlier in your career, start with a cloud or DevOps role. Our cloud engineer career guide and DevOps engineer career guide cover the skills, courses and hiring routes for those jobs. If you're in IT support now, see moving from IT support to cloud engineering.

What "design experience" means to a hiring manager

A hiring manager wants evidence that you chose between options and lived with the result. Examples:

  • You picked a managed database over self-hosted and can explain the cost and recovery trade-off.
  • You designed a multi-region setup and know what it cost.
  • You wrote the migration plan for an on-premises system.
  • You reviewed another team's design and changed it.

Nigerian banks, fintechs, telcos and consultancies produce plenty of this experience, even when the job title was "software engineer" or "infrastructure engineer". Describe it in architecture terms on your CV.

Technical skills employers list

Requirements vary by employer, but the same core shows up in ad after ad.

Core cloud and infrastructure

  • At least one major cloud in depth (AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud), and working knowledge of a second
  • Networking basics: VPCs, subnets, DNS, load balancers, VPNs, private connectivity
  • Identity and security: IAM, encryption, secrets management, least-privilege design
  • Reliability: backup, disaster recovery, high availability, and the trade-offs between them
  • Containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), especially at DevOps and infrastructure vendors
  • Infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation, Bicep)

Vendor ads add the vendor's own stack. Canonical's live Cloud Solutions Architect, Alliances ad (checked October 2026) asks for extensive Linux experience (Ubuntu preferred), Kubernetes, Ceph, automation, Python and bash. Its Solutions Architect for Automotive ad asks for embedded Linux (Yocto or an RTOS) and fluency in Golang, Python, C, C++ or Rust.

Coding: how much is enough

You don't need to be the best engineer on the team, but you do need to write working code. Pre-sales architects build proofs of concept and demo scripts. Delivery architects review pull requests and infrastructure code. Python plus one other language (Go, Java, TypeScript or C#) covers most ads.

Non-technical requirements that decide most hires

Communication counts for at least as much as technical depth. A remote architect explains designs to people who never sit in the same room. They write documents those people read at their own hours, and they present to clients who are judging the vendor.

Employers screen for:

  • Written design documents. An architecture decision record, a design doc with diagrams, or a migration plan. Remote teams rely on writing.
  • Presenting. Both Canonical ads above ask for excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Fluent professional English. Canonical asks for fluent English, and its automotive role also asks for the local language of the market.
  • Business sense. You need to connect a design to cost, risk and the client's deadline.

Travel is a requirement, not a perk

Many "remote" architect roles still involve travel, and Nigerians should check this before applying. Both Canonical ads (checked October 2026) state travel of up to 30% of the time, plus company-wide in-person meetings two to four times a year, each lasting one to two weeks. The automotive ad notes these events are often in international locations that may need visas, and the application asks directly whether you can commit to the travel.

For a Nigerian passport holder, that usually means applying for UK, Schengen or US visas, sometimes at short notice. Before you accept an offer, ask how far ahead events are announced, whether the company provides visa invitation letters, and who pays the visa fees. A visa refusal is not your fault, but a role built around customer visits in Europe is harder to do well if every trip depends on a new visa.

Certifications: which ones matter and what they cost

Certifications help you get past the first screen, especially when your past job titles don't say "architect". They don't replace design experience, and senior ads often skip them entirely. Choose the cloud your target employers use.

CertificationExam fee (as of October 2026)Validity
AWS Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03)$150 (about ₦204,300)3 years
AWS Solutions Architect – Professional$300 (about ₦408,600)3 years
Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305)Priced by countryFree online renewal
Google Professional Cloud Architect$200 (about ₦272,400)2 years

Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and are rounded. Your card provider may add foreign-exchange charges, and AWS notes that extra costs can apply depending on exchange rates.

Notes on each certification

  • AWS Associate: 65 questions in 130 minutes. AWS says candidates with one to three years of IT experience have passed. For most people it's the sensible first architect certification.
  • AWS Professional: 180 minutes. AWS is updating this exam. The current SAP-C02 version can be taken until 16 November 2026, and registration for the new SAP-C03 opens on 27 October 2026, so check which version your study material covers.
  • Azure Solutions Architect Expert: Microsoft requires the Azure Administrator Associate certification first, plus exam AZ-305. Microsoft prices exams by the country where they are proctored, so check the price for Nigeria on the Azure Solutions Architect Expert page before you budget. Microsoft updated the English version on 17 April 2026, and renewal is free through an online assessment.
  • Google Professional Cloud Architect: two hours, in English or Japanese. Renewal is a shorter $100 exam.

A Kubernetes certification or a security certification is worth adding later if your target vendors work in those areas. Our planned guide on IT certifications for landing remote jobs compares the wider options, and the cloud-specific guides cover AWS engineer certifications in more depth.

Do you need a degree?

It depends on the employer. The BLS says network architects typically have a bachelor's degree in a computer-related field or engineering, but notes that some employers don't require one.

Large vendors can be strict. Both Canonical ads ask for a degree in computer science or a related technical field. The application also asks about your degree result, your high school performance with supporting evidence, and how many companies you've worked for in the past ten years. Consultancies and startups more often accept equivalent experience. If you have an HND or no degree, focus on employers whose ads say "or equivalent experience", and let certifications and a strong portfolio carry more of the weight.

Location eligibility: what "remote" means for a Nigerian applicant

"Remote" doesn't mean "open to Nigeria". Every solutions architect ad falls into one of these patterns:

Ad saysWhat it usually means for you
Worldwide or AnywhereOpen to Nigeria unless the ad lists exceptions
EMEA or AfricaOften open to Nigeria, but check the country list
Remote, United Kingdom (or another named country)You must already live and be allowed to work there
US only, Canada onlyNot open to Nigeria-based applicants

GitLab's job board is a clear example of the third pattern. Its listings (checked October 2026) carry labels such as "Remote, United Kingdom", "Remote, Canada; United States" and "Remote, Poland". The jobs are remote, but only within those countries.

On the day we checked, Jobgether's remote solutions architect jobs page for Nigeria displayed 50 listings. Only one said "Remote from Nigeria". Most said "Remote from EMEA" or "Remote from Anywhere", and a few said "Remote from Africa". So most realistic openings for you are regional or worldwide roles, not Nigeria-specific ones. An aggregator's label is not the employer's final word, so always open the original ad. Our guides on what EMEA means in a job description and what "worldwide remote" means from Nigeria cover the details.

Employee or contractor

Worldwide architect roles at large vendors may hire you as an employee through a local entity or an employer of record (EOR), or as an independent contractor. That choice affects your benefits, tax and notice period. See contractor vs employee when a foreign company hires you before you sign.

What solutions architects earn, and what applies to you

There's no reliable published pay figure for Nigeria-based remote solutions architects, so treat any number you see with care. The best official benchmark is American: the BLS puts the median pay for computer network architects at $134,050 a year (May 2025). That figure is for people employed in the US. It's a benchmark, not what a company will offer someone living in Lagos or Enugu.

Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually below US local pay. Many global employers adjust pay by location. Canonical's ads, for example, say pay considers location, experience and performance, with a base salary plus an annual performance bonus. Some benefits are not adjusted for location. Canonical lists a $2,000 yearly learning budget (about ₦2,724,000 at the house rate above), which would cover several certification exams.

When a role includes a salary range, check whether it applies to every location or only to the US or UK. For broader context on dollar-paying fields, see remote jobs that pay in dollars. For how the money reaches you, see receiving dollar payments in Nigeria.

A realistic route into remote solutions architecture from Nigeria

  1. Get strong at one build role first. Spend two to four years as a backend developer, cloud engineer or DevOps engineer, ideally on production systems with real users and real outages.
  2. Ask for design work in your current job. Volunteer to write the design doc, lead a migration or review architecture. Keep copies (with confidential details removed) of the decisions you made.
  3. Pass one associate-level architect certification on the cloud your target employers use. Most people start with AWS Solutions Architect – Associate.
  4. Build two or three public design case studies. Each should cover a problem, constraints, options considered, the chosen design, a diagram, an estimated cost and the risks.
  5. Practise presenting. Record a 10-minute walkthrough of one case study. Pre-sales interviews often include a live whiteboard or demo round.
  6. Target worldwide, EMEA and Africa ads at vendors whose product you've used, and apply directly on their careers pages.
  7. Move up to a professional-level certification once you're doing architect work, if your employer values it.

Example (hypothetical): Tunde, a cloud engineer at a Lagos payments company, publishes a case study on designing a card-transaction service for 99.9% availability across two AWS regions. He explains why he chose a managed database, how failover works, what the monthly cost estimate is, and what happens if the secondary region falls behind. In interviews he can walk through every decision. A case study like this does more for an architect application than a list of certificates.

Our planned guide to building a software portfolio for remote employers shows how to present project work like this.

Your home setup: requirements specific to Nigeria

Architects run live client calls, demos and workshops, so a dropped connection costs more than it would in most jobs.

  • Power: an inverter with enough battery for a full day of calls, or solar. Don't rely on grid supply from your DisCo or on a generator that you have to switch over mid-call.
  • Internet: two independent connections, for example fibre or Starlink plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network. Starlink is available in Nigeria, so check the current price before budgeting.
  • Equipment: a laptop that can run Docker and several browser sessions at once, a good headset and a webcam suitable for client-facing presentations.
  • Time zones: EMEA roles are comfortable. Lagos (WAT, UTC+1) is on the same time as Central Europe in winter and one hour behind in summer, and one hour ahead of London in winter. US clients are harder. From 1 November 2026, a 9am Eastern meeting is 3pm in Lagos, and a 9am Pacific meeting is 6pm.

Common mistakes that sink architect applications

  • Applying too early. With two years' experience and an associate certificate, apply for cloud engineer roles and come back to architect roles later.
  • Listing services instead of decisions. "Used EC2, S3, RDS" says less than "chose RDS over self-managed PostgreSQL to cut recovery time".
  • Ignoring the travel clause. Find out about visa support before the final interview, not after the offer.
  • Applying to country-restricted roles. "Remote, United Kingdom" means you need the right to work in the UK.
  • Using AI-written answers. Canonical's application states that plagiarism or AI-generated content will disqualify you. Write your own essays.
  • Falling for fake "architect" offers that ask for training fees or equipment payments. No real employer charges you to be hired. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

How many years of experience do I need to become a remote solutions architect?

Usually around five. The BLS lists five or more years in a related occupation as typical for network architects. AWS recommends at least one to two years of hands-on cloud design experience for its architect exams, on top of general IT experience.

Can I become a solutions architect from Nigeria without moving abroad?

Yes, if you target roles marked worldwide, EMEA or Africa. Roles restricted to a named country, such as "Remote, United Kingdom", require you to live and have work rights there. Frequent travel requirements may also mean applying for visas regularly.

Which solutions architect certification should I take first?

For most people, AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, which costs $150 (about ₦204,300 at ₦1,362 to $1, as of October 2026). Choose Azure or Google Cloud instead if the employers you're targeting mainly use those platforms. For Azure's architect certification, you need the Azure Administrator Associate first.

Is a certification enough to get a solutions architect job?

No. A certification gets you past some screens, but interviews test whether you've made real design decisions and can defend them. Pair the certificate with design case studies and production experience.

Do remote solutions architect jobs require travel?

Many do, especially pre-sales roles at software vendors. The two Canonical ads we checked in October 2026 list travel of up to 30% plus company events several times a year. Always read the travel line in the ad before you apply.

What's the difference between a solutions architect and a cloud engineer?

A cloud engineer builds and runs infrastructure. A solutions architect decides what should be built and why, and explains that to clients or leadership. Most architects start as engineers. Our cloud engineer interview questions show what the earlier role is tested on.

How much do remote solutions architects earn?

The BLS median for US computer network architects, the closest official category, is $134,050 a year (May 2025), but that is US pay. Global employers often adjust pay by location, so offers to Nigeria-based architects are usually lower. Check whether an ad's range applies to your country.

Key takeaways

  • Remote solutions architect jobs are senior: expect to need around five years of development, cloud or infrastructure experience, including real design work.
  • Most openings for Nigerians are pre-sales roles at software vendors, marked worldwide, EMEA or Africa. Roles labelled with a single country are closed to you.
  • AWS Solutions Architect – Associate ($150) is the usual first certification. Azure's expert certification needs a prerequisite, and Google's costs $200.
  • Communication, written design documents and presenting matter as much as technical skills.
  • Check travel clauses and visa support early, because some roles expect up to 30% travel.
  • US pay figures are benchmarks only. Location-adjusted offers are common.
