You can get a remote solutions engineer job from Nigeria. It is a mid-career role, though, and you rarely get it straight from school. Most hires come from technical support, software engineering, implementation or technical sales, with at least two years in one of them. You also need to prove that you can explain a software product to a buyer and make it work for them.

The harder part is location. Many remote solutions engineer ads are tied to a sales territory such as the US, the UK or "EMEA", and a territory can still mean living in a particular country. This guide explains what the job involves and which backgrounds lead into it. It also covers how to read location lines, what pay looks like, how the interview loop works and how to build proof that gets you shortlisted. Facts that can change are dated as of October 2026.

Quick answer

A remote solutions engineer is the technical expert in a software sales or customer team. They run demos, scope integrations, build proofs of concept and answer the buyer's engineers. Nigerians can be hired when the ad accepts their location, which mostly means EMEA-wide or worldwide roles. Employers usually want two or more years in support, engineering or implementation, plus strong spoken English. Always check the location line before applying.

What a solutions engineer actually does

A solutions engineer (SE) helps a customer decide to buy a technical product, or helps them succeed with it afterwards, by handling the technical side of the conversation. The account executive owns the commercial relationship. The SE owns the questions that start with "can it" and "how would we".

The same job turns up under several titles. When you search, try all of them:

  • Solutions engineer
  • Sales engineer (the term the US Bureau of Labor Statistics uses)
  • Pre-sales engineer or pre-sales consultant
  • Solutions consultant
  • Customer engineer (common at cloud providers)
  • Forward deployed engineer or post-sales solutions engineer (more hands-on, closer to implementation)

Pre-sales and post-sales solutions engineering

Pre-sales SEs work deals before they close. A typical week looks like this: two discovery calls with prospects, three tailored demos, a security questionnaire, and a proof of concept (POC) where the prospect tests the product on their own data for two to four weeks.

Post-sales SEs work with paying customers. They do architecture reviews, troubleshoot integrations, run enablement sessions and provide technical context at renewal time. A closed Prefect ad for a Solutions Engineer (EMEA) described exactly this mix. It included onboarding customers through to production, reviewing architectures and tuning performance, and also joining an after-hours on-call rotation (Prefect listing on Built In, checked 27 October 2026; the listing was removed in October 2025).

How the role differs from its neighbours

RoleMain focusTypical stage
Solutions engineerDemos, POCs, technical fitBefore and just after the sale
Solutions architectDesigning larger systemsEnterprise deals, cloud design
Technical account managerOngoing technical relationshipAfter the sale
Technical supportFixing reported issuesAfter the sale

Solutions architect titles usually expect deeper design experience, and some companies use the two titles interchangeably. If architecture is your goal, see the guide to remote solutions architect requirements. If you prefer long-term ownership of existing accounts, read what remote technical account managers do.

Can you do this job remotely from Nigeria?

Yes, but fewer of these roles are open to Nigeria than developer roles are. Here is why.

Solutions engineers are tied to sales territories. A company that sells to German banks wants an SE who speaks German, can visit Frankfurt and works German hours. A company selling to US mid-market firms wants someone available during US business hours who can join a customer onsite now and then. Payroll is another limit: many companies only employ people in countries where they have an entity or an employer-of-record (EOR) arrangement.

"EMEA" in the job title does not always mean remote

EMEA stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Africa is in the acronym, but an EMEA title often describes the customers the SE covers, not where the SE may live. As of 27 October 2026, DataDome's Greenhouse board listed a "Solutions Engineer EMEA" located in "France - Paris", while other roles on the same board were marked "France - Remote" (DataDome jobs on Greenhouse). That is an office job covering EMEA customers, not a remote role open to Lagos.

The Prefect ad mentioned above shows the other kind. It was remote-first for EMEA, asked for work within a time-zone window ("UTC ± 3" in one section, 09:00 to 18:00 CET in another), and paid through an EOR. Lagos is UTC+1, so it sat inside that window (Prefect listing on Built In). Even so, the ad excluded France and the Netherlands and listed pay adjustments for Ireland, the UK and "elsewhere in EMEA". When the details matter, the full ad text decides.

How to read the location line

Location line saysWhat it usually means for you
Remote, US / Remote, CanadaNot open unless you live and can work there
EMEA, City nameOffice or hybrid role covering EMEA customers
Remote, EMEA or UTC ± 3Possibly open; confirm that Nigeria is not excluded
Remote, Africa or NigeriaOpen; check the hiring entity and contract type
Worldwide / AnywhereOpen, but expect pay set by the company's band

For more on the meaning of the region tag, see what EMEA means in a remote job ad. For a step-by-step check, read how to verify that a job accepts Nigerian residents.

We searched Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby job boards on 27 October 2026 and did not find a live solutions engineer ad that explicitly named Nigeria. We did find many restricted to the US, Europe or South Africa. That does not mean no such roles exist. It does mean you should expect to search widely and apply selectively.

Skills employers ask for

Solutions engineering rewards a specific combination: enough engineering to be trusted by the customer's developers, and enough commercial sense to be trusted by the sales team.

Technical skills

  • One scripting language, used for real. Python or JavaScript is the most common. The Prefect ad asked for two years of writing and debugging production Python.
  • APIs and integrations. You should be comfortable with REST, webhooks, authentication (OAuth, API keys) and reading API documentation, and you should be able to build a small integration in an afternoon.
  • Cloud basics. You should know how AWS, Google Cloud or Azure services fit together, and roughly what containers, Kubernetes and Terraform are for. Prefect listed hands-on cloud experience and familiarity with Kubernetes, Terraform and CI/CD.
  • SQL and data. Many SaaS products sit on top of data, and buyers ask how it flows.
  • Security vocabulary. You need SSO, SAML, encryption at rest, SOC 2 and data residency well enough to fill in a security questionnaire honestly.

Commercial and communication skills

  • Discovery. You ask the questions that reveal what a customer actually needs before you show anything.
  • Demo craft. A demo should tell the story of the buyer's problem, not tour every feature.
  • Writing. POC success criteria, solution summaries and follow-up emails all need tight writing.
  • Spoken English under pressure. The Prefect ad asked for C1-level English or above. Plenty of Nigerian applicants have this, so make it visible in interviews.
  • Saying no. A good SE tells a prospect when the product is not a fit. Hiring managers test for this.

Routes into solutions engineering from Nigeria

Few people start as solutions engineers. These are the four routes we see most often in job requirements, along with what each route needs to add.

Starting pointWhat you already haveWhat to add
Technical supportProduct depth, troubleshootingDemos, discovery, sales vocabulary
Software engineeringCode, architectureCustomer calls, presenting, business framing
Implementation or integrationCustomer projects, APIsPre-sales demos, POC planning
SDR or account executiveSales process, discoveryHands-on technical skills, scripting

From technical support

This is the most common route. If you already handle tier-2 or tier-3 tickets for a SaaS product, you know the product better than most of the sales team. Volunteer to join sales calls as the technical voice, write internal "how it works" documents and ask to shadow an SE. If you are not yet in support, the technical support specialist career guide covers how to get in. For the step after that, see moving from IT support to cloud engineering.

From software engineering

Developers already have the hardest part to fake. What usually holds them back is presenting. Offer to give internal demos of the features you build, write public tutorials, and speak at a local meetup in Lagos, Abuja or online. The software engineer career guide covers the technical baseline.

From implementation at a Nigerian fintech, telco or SaaS company

Many Nigerian payment and banking companies hire integration engineers, solutions architects and implementation leads who help business customers connect to their APIs. That work is solutions engineering in all but name. Describe it on your CV in SE language: scoped integrations, ran technical workshops, built sample code, shortened time to go-live.

From sales

SDRs and account executives who learn to script and build demos make strong SEs because they already understand pipeline and buyer psychology. The account executive career guide is useful background. Be honest with yourself about the technical gap, though: it usually takes months of deliberate building.

Certifications worth paying for

Certifications help a solutions engineer CV less than proof of building and presenting does. A small number are worth the money because buyers recognise them.

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate. As of October 2026, the exam costs $150 (about ₦204,300 at ₦1,362 to $1, CBN NFEM rate of 23 October 2026), plus any local fees. It has 65 questions in 130 minutes, can be taken online with a proctor or at a Pearson VUE centre, and is valid for three years. AWS recommends at least one year of hands-on AWS design experience and suggests that people with no IT background start with the Cloud Practitioner exam (AWS certification page).
  • Vendor product certifications. If you target companies that sell into Salesforce, HubSpot, Snowflake or a cloud marketplace, their own free or low-cost badges show product fluency.

Don't stack five certificates instead of building one demo. For a wider comparison, see the IT certifications guide for remote jobs.

What remote solutions engineers earn

Pay depends on the company's band for your location, your seniority and whether the role carries variable pay. Here are two real reference points, followed by what they mean for you.

SourceFigureWhat it represents
US BLS, sales engineers$124,900 a yearUS median, May 2025 data
Prefect SE (EMEA) ad$70,000 to $120,000 a year plus equityAdvertised range, closed 2025 ad

Sources: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook and the Prefect listing on Built In.

The BLS figure is a US benchmark for people working in the US. BLS also reports about 51,600 sales engineer jobs in the US in 2025, with 3% projected growth from 2025 to 2035 and a bachelor's degree as the typical entry education. A Nigeria-based SE will usually be offered less than US local pay, because companies set bands by location.

The Prefect range is more realistic for an EMEA-wide role. Converted at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM rate, 23 October 2026), $70,000 a year is about $5,833 a month, or roughly ₦7.9 million a month before tax and fees. $120,000 a year is $10,000 a month, about ₦13.6 million. Treat these numbers as an illustration of one advertised band, not a market average.

Base pay and variable pay

Many pre-sales SE offers split pay into a base salary and a variable portion tied to team sales targets. The total of the two at 100% of target is called on-target earnings (OTE). Before you accept, ask:

  • What percentage of OTE is base?
  • Is the variable portion paid monthly, quarterly or yearly?
  • What did the SE team actually attain against target last year?
  • Is variable pay included if you are hired as a contractor?

Post-sales SE roles more often pay a flat salary. For broader negotiation tactics, see how to negotiate a dollar salary. Our account executive salary guide also shows how sales-side pay is structured.

Build proof that gets you shortlisted

Hiring managers for SE roles want to see you explain and build, so your application needs evidence of both. A CV that only lists tools gets skipped.

A demo portfolio

Pick a product category you want to work in, for example payments APIs, data tools or customer messaging. Then produce three things:

  1. A recorded demo of 8 to 12 minutes. Choose a real, freely available product, open with a buyer's problem, show the two or three features that solve it and close with next steps. Publish it on YouTube or Loom.
  2. A small proof of concept on GitHub. Write a working integration with a short README that explains the use case, the setup steps and the trade-offs you made.
  3. A one-page solution summary. Write it the way you would send it to a prospect's CTO: their problem, the proposed approach, the risks and what a POC would measure.

Example (hypothetical): Chiamaka is a tier-2 support engineer at a Lagos SaaS company. She builds a Python script that pulls failed-payment webhooks from a payments API sandbox into a Google Sheet and sends a Slack alert. She records a 10-minute demo pitched at a fictional e-commerce finance lead, writes a one-page summary and links all three from her CV and LinkedIn headline. In interviews she now has something concrete to talk through instead of a list of tools.

Rewrite your CV in SE language

Swap duties for outcomes that matter to sales. "Resolved escalated API tickets" becomes "diagnosed integration failures for 40+ business customers and wrote the internal guide sales now sends to prospects". Use only numbers that are true. For CV structure for foreign employers, see writing a CV for international remote jobs.

A step-by-step plan to get hired

  1. Choose a product category where you already have some depth: payments, data, developer tools, security, customer support software.
  2. Fill your largest skills gap first. For support people that is presenting. For developers it is discovery. For sales people it is scripting.
  3. Build the demo portfolio described above. Expect a few weekends of work.
  4. Search all the title variants on company career pages and job boards, and set a filter for Remote plus EMEA, Africa or Worldwide.
  5. Read the location line and the full ad before you write a single word of your application. Skip roles that need US, Canadian or EU work authorisation.
  6. Apply to fewer roles, with tailored proof. Link the demo that is closest to the company's product.
  7. Message the SE manager or a team SE on LinkedIn with a short note and your demo link. Don't send a generic request.
  8. Prepare for the demo round (see the next section) before you get the invite, not after.

The remote solutions engineer interview loop

SE interviews usually take four to six rounds, and most of them test communication as much as technical skill. Expect some version of the following.

Recruiter screen

The recruiter confirms your location, notice period, salary expectations and working hours. Say plainly that you are based in Lagos (or wherever you live) on WAT, UTC+1, and name the hours you can cover. Getting location clear here saves everyone time.

Technical screen

Expect API questions, a short coding or SQL exercise, and architecture questions such as "how would you connect our product to a customer's data warehouse?" Talk through your reasoning out loud.

Discovery role-play

An interviewer plays a prospect. You ask questions, uncover the real problem and resist the urge to start demoing. Candidates often fail this round by pitching too early.

Demo presentation

You get access to the product (or bring your own demo) and present to a panel playing buyers, often with a planned interruption such as "our security team will never allow that". Rehearse with a timer, prepare a backup recording and decide in advance how you will handle a question you can't answer. "I'll confirm with our engineering team and come back to you by Friday" is a good answer.

Panel with sales and leadership

This round checks how you work with account executives and whether you will push back honestly. Have a story ready about a time you told a customer something they didn't want to hear.

Working hours, power and internet in Nigeria

Solutions engineers spend most of the day on live calls, so your setup matters more than it does in many remote jobs.

Time zones

  • EMEA roles. Central European hours of 9am to 6pm are 9am to 6pm in Lagos in winter and 8am to 5pm in summer, because Lagos does not change its clocks. UK hours of 9am to 5pm are 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter (GMT) and the same time in summer (BST).
  • US-facing roles. A 9am to 5pm US Eastern day is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos in winter (EST, from 1 November 2026) and 2pm to 10pm in summer. Late demos are part of the deal.
  • On-call. Post-sales roles may include a rotation, as the Prefect ad did. Ask how often it comes around and whether it is paid.

Setup

A dropped call in the middle of a demo costs deals. Keep an inverter or solar backup sized for your laptop, router and a light. Use two internet connections, such as fibre plus a MiFi or a phone hotspot on a different network. Use a wired or quality USB headset and a camera at eye level. Starlink is available in Nigeria and some SEs use it as a primary or backup connection; check the current price before you buy.

Contracts, payment and tax

Many foreign companies hire Nigeria-based SEs as independent contractors. Others employ them through an EOR such as Deel or Remote, which can include benefits and statutory deductions. These are different arrangements with different rights, so read contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you before you sign. Ask specifically whether variable pay and equity apply to contractors.

To get paid, compare the options in how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Foreign income is taxable in Nigeria; the remote work tax guide explains your obligations under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

Mistakes that cost Nigerian applicants SE interviews

  • Applying to territory-locked roles. A US-only ad will reject you automatically, however strong your profile.
  • Treating "EMEA" as "open to Africa". Read the location field and the full ad.
  • A tool list with no proof. One good demo beats ten logos on your CV.
  • Demoing before discovery. Interviewers watch for this in the role-play.
  • Overclaiming. SEs are trusted because they are accurate. A false claim on your CV can come out in the technical round.
  • Paying anyone for a "guaranteed" SE placement. Real employers don't charge applicants. See our guide to spotting remote job scams.

Frequently asked questions

Do solutions engineers need to know how to code?

Usually yes, at a practical level. You need to write scripts, call APIs and build small proofs of concept, typically in Python or JavaScript. You don't need to be a senior software engineer, but you must be able to build what you demo and debug it live.

Can I become a solutions engineer with no experience?

Rarely. Most ads ask for two or more years in support, engineering, implementation or technical sales. If you are starting from zero, get a technical support or junior developer role first. The guide to remote jobs with no experience covers realistic starting points.

Is a solutions engineer the same as a sales engineer?

Mostly, yes. Both titles describe technical experts who support the sale of a technical product. Some companies use "solutions engineer" for broader roles that include post-sales work, so read the responsibilities rather than relying on the title.

How much does a remote solutions engineer earn from Nigeria?

There is no reliable published figure for Nigeria-based SEs. As a reference, the US median for sales engineers was $124,900 a year in May 2025 (BLS). One closed EMEA-wide remote ad from Prefect offered $70,000 to $120,000 a year plus equity. Expect offers set by the company's location band, often with variable pay on top of base.

Do I need a degree to become a solutions engineer?

Not always. BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical US entry route, but many software companies hire on demonstrated skill and product experience. A strong demo portfolio and relevant work history can carry an application without a computing degree.

Which certification helps most for solutions engineer roles?

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate is widely recognised. It costs $150 as of October 2026 and is valid for three years. A certification from the vendor whose ecosystem your target company sells into can help just as much. Proof of building and presenting still matters more than any certificate.

Will I need to travel as a remote solutions engineer?

Sometimes. Pre-sales roles may include occasional customer visits or company offsites, which need a passport and possibly visas. Ask about travel expectations at the recruiter screen and whether the company covers visa costs.

Key takeaways

  • A solutions engineer is the technical expert in a sales or customer team: demos, discovery, proofs of concept and integrations.
  • Nigerians can be hired remotely, but many SE roles are tied to US or European territories. "EMEA" in a title can still mean an office in a European city.
  • The usual routes in are technical support, software engineering, implementation and technical sales, with at least two years of experience.
  • A recorded demo, a small proof of concept and a one-page solution summary are stronger proof than a list of certificates.
  • US pay figures are benchmarks. Remote offers to Nigeria-based SEs follow the company's location band and often include variable pay.
  • Reliable power, two internet connections and a clear statement of your working hours are part of the job, not extras.
