Remote engineering manager jobs open to people living in Nigeria do exist, but most of them are not on the general job boards. They sit on company career pages and applicant tracking systems (ATS) such as Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby. Most ask for several years as a hands-on engineer plus real experience leading people. The usual barrier for Nigerian applicants is the location line, not skill. Plenty of engineering manager ads that say "remote" only accept people in the US, Canada, the UK or the EU.

This guide covers where to look, how to read an ad's eligibility wording, the experience bar set by real ads (checked in October 2026), and how the interview loop for managers differs from a developer loop. It also covers what pay benchmarks mean for someone based in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt. It's written for senior engineers, tech leads and current managers who already know their craft and want to lead a distributed team without relocating.

Quick answer

To find remote engineering manager jobs from Nigeria, start with the career pages of remote-first companies and African tech firms. Search Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby boards for "engineering manager" alongside "worldwide", "EMEA", "Africa" or "Nigeria". Only apply where the location line includes Nigeria or your region. Expect to need roughly 8 or more years in engineering, at least 2 to 3 of them leading people, and evidence of hiring, coaching and delivery.

What a remote engineering manager actually does

An engineering manager (EM) is responsible for a team of software engineers: their output, their growth and how they work together. The EM role is different from a tech lead or staff engineer, who mainly owns technical direction. An EM still needs current technical depth, but most of the week goes on people and delivery.

GitLab, which publishes its job descriptions openly, sums up the role by saying managers "see their team as their product". Its engineering manager job family lists these responsibilities:

  • running regular one-to-ones and giving clear performance feedback
  • hiring globally distributed engineers and conducting managerial interviews
  • writing project plans and running agile processes
  • drafting quarterly objectives (OKRs) and engineering KPIs
  • improving quality, security and performance
  • joining the incident on-call rotation

In a remote team, nearly all of that happens in writing or on video calls. Project plans, feedback, decisions and incident reviews all live in documents and tickets. That's why remote employers care so much about written communication when they hire managers, and why "I'm a good communicator" on a CV carries little weight unless you can show something you wrote.

If you're still deciding between management and the senior technical track, read our guide to remote technical lead roles or the one on becoming a remote software architect first. Those paths often pay as well as management and suit people who would rather keep writing code.

The experience bar in real engineering manager ads

Remote engineering manager roles are rarely entry-level management roles. Companies hiring managers they will never meet in person want proof that you have already done the job, or at least most of it.

Here is what two live ads opened in October 2026 ask for:

Employer and roleLocation lineExperience asked for
Moniepoint, Engineering ManagerRemote, Lagos, Nigeria8 to 10 years hands-on, 5+ in Java/Spring Boot, 3+ in engineering leadership
Canonical, Ubuntu Engineering ManagerHome based, WorldwideTechnical leadership and a software engineering background required, plus strong Rust, Go, Python, Flutter or C/C++

Moniepoint's Engineering Manager ad also asks for a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or a related field. It lists CI/CD and release management, monitoring, incident response and blameless root cause analysis. Canonical's Ubuntu Engineering Manager ad asks for a strong academic record, ideally a computer science or STEM degree (it also accepts a "compelling alternative path"). It expects professional English and the ability to travel to in-person team events.

For a wider benchmark, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says computer and information systems managers typically need a bachelor's degree and 5 years or more of experience in a related occupation. That BLS category covers more than engineering managers (it includes IT managers and directors), but it points the same way.

In plain terms: if you have 3 to 4 years of experience and have never managed anyone, a remote EM job is a long shot. A more realistic route is to take on team-lead duties where you work now (mentoring, running sprints, interviewing) and apply after 2 or more years of that.

What counts as "leadership experience"

Recruiters screening EM applications look for evidence that you have done these things, not just been present while they happened:

  • had engineers reporting to you, even 2 or 3, with one-to-ones and performance reviews
  • hired people: wrote the job description, ran interviews, made the hiring call
  • managed under-performance or a difficult conversation
  • owned delivery of a project across several engineers and stakeholders
  • ran or improved a process, such as on-call, release management or sprint planning

Being a "tech lead" with no direct reports counts for something, especially in your first EM application. Say clearly what you did own.

Where to find remote engineering manager jobs open to Nigeria

Generic remote job boards carry plenty of engineering manager listings, but many are restricted to one country, out of date, or copied from somewhere else. When we searched for the primary keyword in October 2026, the top results were mostly aggregator pages repeating the same listings. Work from the source instead.

1. Company career pages and ATS boards

Most tech companies post jobs through an ATS, and those boards are public. Greenhouse boards live at job-boards.greenhouse.io (or job-boards.eu.greenhouse.io for EU-hosted boards), Lever at jobs.lever.co and Ashby at jobs.ashbyhq.com. Searching them directly is the most reliable way to find live EM roles with the real location line.

Useful Google searches to copy:

  • site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "engineering manager" worldwide
  • site:job-boards.eu.greenhouse.io "engineering manager" Nigeria
  • site:jobs.lever.co "engineering manager" EMEA remote
  • site:jobs.ashbyhq.com "engineering manager" "remote" Africa

Open the ad itself, not the search snippet. Snippets and mirrors on third-party sites often stay up long after a role has closed. Our guide to finding remote jobs on company career pages covers this method in more detail.

2. Nigerian and pan-African tech companies

Nigerian fintechs and African scale-ups hire engineering managers on remote contracts based in Nigeria. These roles avoid the location problem entirely. As of October 2026, Moniepoint's Greenhouse board listed an Engineering Manager role marked "Remote, Lagos, Nigeria". Search results also showed related EM ads (Site Reliability and Fraud Tools) on the same board. We fully opened only the general Engineering Manager ad.

Pay for these roles may be in naira, dollars or a mix, and the ads don't always say which. Ask early in the process. Our guide to remote jobs with startups across Africa covers this group of employers in more depth.

3. Global remote-first companies with worldwide EM roles

A smaller group of companies hires managers almost anywhere. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is one example. As of October 2026 its Greenhouse board had engineering manager roles marked "Home based - Worldwide". Its Engineering Manager - Data Platform ad says the role "can be filled in European, Middle East, African or any American region / time zone". That wording explicitly includes Nigeria's region. Other Canonical EM ads that appeared in search results were limited to "Home based - EMEA" or "Home based - APAC", so check each one.

Be aware that "remote-first" doesn't mean "hires everywhere". In October 2026, GitLab's current openings board listed its remote engineering roles in specific countries such as the US, Canada, the UK and Poland, plus office roles in Bangalore. That's a company famous for remote work, yet none of the roles we saw on that page were open to Nigeria. Treat every ad's location line as the final word, whatever the company's reputation.

4. Job boards and aggregators

Aggregators are useful for spotting which companies are hiring managers. Use them as a lead list, then go to the company's own career page to confirm the role is live and check where applicants may live. WorkRemote's own tech job listings show the company, its website and where applicants may live on every listing. Our roundup of websites for finding remote developer jobs compares the main options.

5. Your own network and internal moves

Many EM roles are filled by internal promotion or referral before they're advertised. If you're a senior engineer at a foreign company now, the quickest route to an EM title is often to ask your manager what you would need to show to move into management there. Former colleagues who now manage at remote companies are your next-best lead. Our guide on asking for a referral for a remote job has message templates.

How to read the location line on an engineering manager ad

The location line decides whether you can be hired, so read it before anything else. A quick reference:

Ad saysWhat it usually means for someone in Nigeria
Remote, Nigeria / LagosOpen to you
Home based, WorldwideUsually open, but check the body text for region limits
Remote, EMEAEurope, Middle East and Africa; often open, sometimes limited to listed countries
Remote, Europe or EUUsually needs EU residence or work rights
Remote, US / Canada / UKNeeds residence and work authorisation there; not open to you

"EMEA" and "worldwide" have their own catches, covered in our explainers on what EMEA means in a remote job ad and what worldwide remote means when applying from Nigeria. If an ad is vague, ask the recruiter one direct question before investing time: "Can you hire someone living in Nigeria for this role, as an employee or contractor?"

Why time zones matter more for managers

Time zones matter more for a remote manager than for an individual engineer. An engineer can work on their own schedule for most of the day. A manager runs one-to-ones, stand-ups, planning sessions and incident calls, and has to be there when the team is.

Nigeria is on West Africa Time (WAT, UTC+1) all year, with no daylight saving. As of late October 2026:

  • UK: London is on GMT, so Lagos is 1 hour ahead. A 9am to 5pm London day runs 10am to 6pm in Lagos.
  • Central Europe: CET is the same as Lagos in winter and 1 hour ahead in summer.
  • US East: New York is 5 hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026, then 6 hours behind. A 10am New York stand-up becomes 4pm in Lagos in winter.
  • US Pacific: 8 to 9 hours behind, which leaves little overlap with a West Coast team.

This is why Nigerian applicants do best with EM roles for teams centred on Europe, Africa or the UK, or with roles described as EMEA. A US-headquartered company may still hire you to manage an EMEA team. Managing a team in San Francisco from Lagos is a much harder sell. Our guide to answering time-zone questions in interviews will help when a recruiter raises the issue.

What remote engineering managers earn, and what that means in Nigeria

There's no reliable public dataset for what Nigeria-based remote engineering managers are paid, so treat any single figure you see online with suspicion. The aggregator pages that rank for this topic quote ranges without a source.

The most solid benchmark is US government data. The BLS reports a median annual wage of $175,140 for computer and information systems managers as of May 2025. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is roughly ₦238.5 million a year, or about ₦19.9 million a month.

That number is a US benchmark for people living and working in the US. It is not what a company will offer someone in Nigeria. Many companies set pay by location, so a Nigeria-based manager is usually offered less than a US-based one, even for the same job. Canonical, for example, says base pay varies with location, experience and skills. Neither of the Nigeria-eligible ads we opened published a salary.

What usually moves your offer:

  • Employer's pay model: location-based bands versus one global band
  • Who you report into and where: a European or US headcount budget versus an African subsidiary's budget
  • Contract type: employee through an employer of record (EOR) with benefits, or an independent contractor paid gross
  • Currency: naira, dollars, or a split
  • Team size and scope: managing 4 engineers versus managing managers

For developer pay figures in dollars and naira, see our software engineer salary guide. When an offer arrives, our guide to comparing international salary offers explains how to weigh base pay, benefits and currency against each other.

How to apply for remote engineering manager roles

A management application needs different evidence from a developer one. This is the sequence we recommend.

  1. Pick your lane. Decide which stack and domain you can manage credibly (for example backend Java in fintech, or platform and SRE). Moniepoint's ad asked for 5+ years in Java and Spring Boot, so specific technical depth still filters candidates.
  2. Rewrite your CV around outcomes of the team, not your own code. Lead with team size, hiring, retention, delivery and reliability results.
  3. Prepare two or three written artefacts. Examples are a sanitised project plan, an incident postmortem, or a short document on how you run one-to-ones. Remote employers judge managers on their writing.
  4. Build a target list of 20 to 40 companies whose EM ads include Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide, and check their boards weekly.
  5. Apply directly on the company's ATS board, then message the hiring manager or recruiter on LinkedIn with a short note.
  6. Track every application with the date, the location line and the name of your contact.

Example (hypothetical): CV bullets for an engineering manager

These lines are made up to show the format. Use your own real numbers.

  • Managed a team of 6 backend engineers across Lagos and Nairobi; ran weekly one-to-ones and twice-yearly performance reviews.
  • Hired 4 engineers in 12 months: wrote the job descriptions, designed the take-home exercise and chaired the final interviews.
  • Cut failed production deployments by introducing a release checklist and blameless postmortems after every incident.
  • Planned and delivered a payments reconciliation service with product, finance and compliance stakeholders over two quarters.

Notice that every bullet names the people, the process or the result. "Led the team" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.

Example (hypothetical): a short note to a hiring manager

"Hi Sarah, I've applied for the Engineering Manager role on your Platform team. The ad lists EMEA, and I'm based in Lagos (UTC+1, so I overlap fully with your Berlin colleagues). For the past two years I've managed five SREs at a Nigerian fintech, including on-call design and hiring. Happy to share a postmortem I wrote if that would help. Thanks, Tunde."

The note confirms eligibility and time zone up front, gives one concrete piece of evidence and offers a writing sample. It is short enough to read on a phone.

For CV structure, our guide to writing a CV for international remote jobs goes further. Rewriting a management CV is fiddly: if you'd rather have someone on the WorkRemote team rewrite it and optimise your LinkedIn profile, that is part of Premium CV and LinkedIn support.

The remote engineering manager interview loop

EM interview loops are longer than developer loops and test both technical judgement and people management. Two published examples show the range.

GitLab's engineering manager job family lists: a 30-minute recruiter screen, then 60-minute interviews with the hiring manager, a peer engineering manager, possibly a product manager and optionally a senior leader, then an offer.

Moniepoint's Engineering Manager ad lists five stages: a recruiter call, live coding and code review, system design and technical discussion, a project planning and product thinking round, and a behavioural and technical interview with the hiring manager.

So be ready to code, which surprises some candidates. Many companies still test EMs on hands-on skills, especially for first-line managers of small teams.

How to prepare for each type of round

  • Coding and code review: practise in your main language under time pressure, and practise reviewing someone else's pull request out loud. That is a manager's real daily task.
  • System design: prepare one system you built and can explain end to end, including the trade-offs you would make differently now.
  • Project planning: be able to break a vague goal into milestones, risks and staffing, and explain how you would report progress in writing.
  • People management: prepare real stories about an under-performer, a conflict between engineers, a hire that went wrong, and a time you pushed back on a deadline.
  • Remote working: explain how you keep a distributed team aligned, such as written updates, async stand-ups and decision logs, and how you would handle the time-zone gap.

Our software engineer interview questions cover the technical side. For the remote-specific questions, see how to prepare for a remote job interview.

Contracts, pay and set-up when you work from Nigeria

When a foreign company hires you, it will usually either employ you through an employer of record (EOR) such as Deel or Remote, or engage you as an independent contractor. That choice affects your benefits, notice period and tax. Our explainer on contractor versus EOR employee status in Nigeria walks through the differences, and the guide to tax for remote workers in Nigeria covers your obligations under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

For getting paid, our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares Payoneer, Wise, Grey, Raenest, Deel withdrawals and domiciliary accounts.

As a manager, you also have less room for downtime than an individual engineer. If your power or internet drops during a one-to-one or an incident call, your team notices. Before you start, set up:

  • an inverter or solar system with enough battery for a full working day, with a generator as a last resort
  • two internet connections from different providers (for example fibre or Starlink plus a MiFi), and your phone hotspot as a third fallback
  • a quiet room and a decent headset, because you will be on calls for much of the day

Canonical's ads also mention in-person team events 2 to 4 times a year. If an employer expects travel, check whether they handle visas and costs, and make sure your international passport is valid.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying to "Remote, US" or "Remote, EU" roles anyway. The ATS or recruiter will usually reject you on location before anyone reads your CV.
  • Sending a developer CV for a manager job. If the top third of your CV is all frameworks and no people, you'll be read as an engineer.
  • Overclaiming management experience. Interviewers will ask detailed follow-up questions about performance reviews and hiring decisions. Vague answers end the process.
  • Ignoring the coding round. Many EM loops include live coding. Rusty skills fail candidates who would otherwise make good managers.
  • Trusting mirrored listings. Aggregators often show roles that have closed. Confirm on the company's own board.
  • Paying anyone to "secure" a management role. Legitimate employers never charge applicants. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians get remote engineering manager jobs with foreign companies?

Yes, when the ad's location line includes Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide. As of October 2026, Canonical had engineering manager roles marked "Home based - Worldwide", one of which explicitly listed African time zones. Many other remote EM ads are restricted to the US, UK, Canada or EU, so check every ad before applying.

How many years of experience do I need to become a remote engineering manager?

Usually around 8 or more years in engineering, with at least 2 to 3 years leading people. Moniepoint's October 2026 ad asked for 8 to 10 years of hands-on engineering and 3+ years of leadership. The BLS lists 5+ years of related experience for computer and information systems managers.

Can I get a remote engineering manager job without managing people before?

It's possible but hard. Remote employers rarely gamble on a first-time manager they can't meet in person. Tech leads who have mentored engineers, run sprints and taken part in hiring have the best chance. Otherwise, move into management at your current employer first.

Do remote engineering managers still write code?

Often, yes, at least in interviews. Moniepoint's loop included live coding and code review. GitLab's job family requires in-depth technical experience in at least one core language or technology the team uses. First-line managers of small teams tend to stay more hands-on than managers of managers.

How much do remote engineering managers earn?

There is no reliable public figure for Nigeria-based EMs. The US benchmark is a $175,140 median for computer and information systems managers (BLS, May 2025), roughly ₦238.5 million a year at ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026). Offers to people living in Nigeria are usually lower than US local pay.

Which time zones work best for a Nigeria-based engineering manager?

UK, European and African teams work best. Lagos is level with Central European winter time and 1 hour ahead of London in winter, so working hours overlap almost completely. US East Coast teams are 5 to 6 hours behind, which is workable with late afternoons. US West Coast teams are 8 to 9 hours behind and are hard to manage from Nigeria.

Is an engineering manager the same as a tech lead?

No. A tech lead mainly owns technical direction and usually has no direct reports. An engineering manager is responsible for people: hiring, one-to-ones, performance and delivery. Some companies blend the two, so read the responsibilities, not just the title.

Key takeaways

  • Remote engineering manager jobs open to Nigeria are mostly on company career pages and ATS boards (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby), not general job boards.
  • The location line decides eligibility. Look for Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide, and skip roles restricted to the US, UK, Canada or EU.
  • Real ads seen in October 2026 asked for about 8 to 10 years of engineering and 3+ years of leadership.
  • Time-zone overlap matters more for managers than for engineers, so UK, European and African teams suit Nigeria-based managers best.
  • US pay figures are benchmarks only. Ask early about pay model, currency and contract type.
  • Expect long interview loops that include coding, system design, project planning and people-management rounds.
