Most people who get a remote software architect job are already senior engineers who have designed systems in production. Then they learn to show that design work in writing, because that is how distributed teams judge architects. The title is rarely a first step into remote work. It usually comes after five or more years of building, and many foreign companies hire for it under different names, such as Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer or Solutions Architect.
This guide covers what a remote software architect does, how the title differs from its close relatives, and the skills and evidence employers look for. It also covers certifications and their real costs, the interview format, and where Nigeria-based engineers can find architect roles that actually accept them. We also point out the Nigerian details that trip people up, such as company trips that need a visa and application forms that ask for your secondary school results.
Quick answer
To get a remote software architect job, you need several years of senior engineering experience and proof that you have designed real systems. That proof can be design documents, decision records, migrations you led or talks you gave. You also need to pass system design interviews in writing and on video. From Nigeria, look for roles tagged "worldwide", "EMEA" or "Africa", search Staff and Principal Engineer titles as well, and confirm on the live ad where applicants may live.
What a remote software architect actually does
A software architect decides how a system is put together: which services exist and how they talk to each other, where data lives, and how the system scales, fails and gets secured. They also record why each choice was made. In a remote company, most of that work happens in writing. You write design documents, comment on other engineers' proposals, run architecture reviews on video calls and keep a record of decisions that people in other time zones can read while you sleep.
Job ads for the role keep listing the same things. A software architect ad from DRO Health, a Nigerian telehealth company (posted in March 2021 and now expired), asked for application design and architecture, UML and other modelling methods, design patterns, data modelling and service-oriented architecture, along with Python/Django coding and "organisational, leadership, communication and presentation skills". The ad is old, but that mix has held up: you still write some code, and you spend a lot of your time persuading people.
A typical week for a remote architect might include:
- Reviewing two or three design proposals from product teams and leaving written feedback.
- Writing or updating an architecture decision record (ADR), a short document that captures one decision, the options considered and the trade-offs.
- Joining one or two live calls to settle disagreements that text couldn't resolve.
- Prototyping or reading code to check that a proposed approach actually works.
- Helping with incident reviews when a design weakness caused an outage.
Software architect, solutions architect, staff engineer: know which job you want
Before you apply, it helps to know that "architect" covers at least three different jobs. Mixing them up wastes applications.
| Title | Who you serve | What the work looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Software architect | Your own engineering teams | System design, standards, reviews, some coding |
| Solutions architect | Customers and sales teams | Designing deployments for clients, demos, presales |
| Enterprise architect | Company leadership | Aligning many systems with business strategy |
| Staff or principal engineer | Your own engineering teams | Very similar to software architect, more hands-on code |
Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, shows the difference in its own ads. Its Solutions Architect for Automotive role (checked October 2026) asks for "interest in customer-facing work, including pitching, demonstrating" and travel of up to 30% of the time. That is a solutions architect job: you design for customers. A software architect inside a product team rarely pitches anything.
The practical lesson is that many remote-first companies don't use the word "architect" for internal design roles at all. They hire Staff Engineers and Principal Engineers to do the same work. If you only search "software architect", you will miss a large share of the roles you're qualified for. Search all four titles, then read the responsibilities to decide which ones fit.
If customer-facing work appeals to you, our guide to remote solutions architect jobs covers that path. For the leadership-strategy version, see remote enterprise architect roles. If you'd rather stay closer to delivery, compare this path with remote technical lead jobs.
Can you get a remote software architect job from Nigeria?
Yes, but only with employers whose roles accept applicants living in Nigeria, and there are fewer of those than the total number of remote architect ads. Many remote architect roles are restricted to one country (often "Remote, US") because of payroll, tax, data-access or security-clearance rules. Others are open to a region.
Here is how location tags on architect ads usually read for someone in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt:
| Location tag | Can you apply from Nigeria? |
|---|---|
| Home based, Worldwide / Anywhere | Usually yes; confirm in the ad text |
| EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) | Often yes, as Nigeria is in EMEA |
| Africa or a named African city | Yes, if Nigeria isn't excluded |
| Remote, US / UK / Canada only | Usually no, unless you already have work authorisation there |
| Europe only or a named EU country | Usually no |
Two live examples, both checked in October 2026:
- Canonical's Solutions Architect for Automotive is listed as "Home based - Worldwide", and the ad says the company is hiring worldwide.
- Canonical's Information Systems - Open Source Technical Architect says the role "will be based remotely in the EMEA region".
Vacancies close and eligibility changes, so treat these as examples of how an eligible ad looks, not as a promise that the roles are still open. Always read the location line and the body of the live ad. Our guides on what "worldwide remote" means for Nigerian applicants and what EMEA means in a job description go through the edge cases.
Employee or contractor?
Foreign companies hire Nigeria-based architects in one of two ways: through an employer of record (EOR), which makes you a legal employee with benefits, or as an independent contractor who invoices monthly. The difference changes your leave, notice period and tax position. Our explainer on contractor versus EOR employee status covers it, and how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria covers getting the money home.
Skills remote employers expect from a software architect
The skills split into three groups. You need all three, but the third is the one that most often separates architects who get hired remotely from strong engineers who don't.
Technical depth
- Distributed systems basics: consistency and availability trade-offs, queues and event streams, caching, idempotency, retries and timeouts.
- Data design: relational modelling, when to choose a document or key-value store, indexing, migrations without downtime.
- Cloud platforms: at least one of AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, in real depth, including networking, identity and cost.
- Reliability and operations: observability, incident response and postmortems. Canonical's EMEA architect ad specifically asks for experience with "major production outages, incident response, and postmortems".
- Security by design: authentication, authorisation, secrets handling, and data protection rules relevant to the product.
- Current coding ability: most remote architect ads still expect you to read and write production code in at least one main language.
Judgement
Architects are paid for decisions, not diagrams. Interviewers want to hear you weigh options, for example: "We could split this into three services, but with a team of six engineers a modular monolith is cheaper to run and easier to change." Being able to say no to a fashionable technology, and explain why, counts for more than knowing every framework.
Written communication
Remote architecture runs on documents. If your design doc is unclear, a colleague in Toronto will either wait a day to ask you or build the wrong thing. Canonical's architect ads ask for clear English across written, voice and video communication, and its application forms ask several written questions. Practise writing one-page proposals with a clear problem statement, options, a recommendation and the risks.

How to build architecture experience when you don't have the title
Most Nigerian engineers who become architects never had a job called "architect" first. They did architecture work as senior engineers and wrote it down. Here is a practical way to build that record in your current job.
- Volunteer for the design document. The next time your team starts a feature that touches several services, offer to write the proposal. Ask senior colleagues to review it.
- Start an ADR log. If your team has no decision records, start one in the repository (a folder of short Markdown files is enough). After a year you will have a dozen real decisions you can describe in interviews.
- Lead a migration. Monolith to services, one database to another, on-premises to cloud: migrations show planning, risk management and coordination.
- Own an incident review. Write the postmortem for an outage and propose the design change that prevents a repeat.
- Run an architecture review against a published framework. The AWS Well-Architected Framework is free to read and gives a structured set of questions about reliability, security, cost and performance. AWS also offers its Well-Architected Tool for reviewing workloads at no charge. Reviewing your company's system against it gives you a concrete piece of architecture work to discuss.
- Mentor and present. Give an internal talk on a design, or speak at a local meetup. Interviewers ask how you persuaded people, and you'll want real stories.
If your employer's work is confidential, recreate the shape of the problem in a public repository with your own design document. Our guide to building a software portfolio that attracts remote employers covers how to present this kind of work.
Example (hypothetical): a 12-month plan for a senior backend engineer in Lagos
Tolu (a made-up example) is a senior backend engineer with six years' experience at a Nigerian fintech. She wants an architect-track remote role by the end of next year.
| Months | Focus | Evidence produced |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Write design docs for two features; start an ADR log | 2 design docs, 5 ADRs |
| 4 to 6 | Lead the payments service database migration | Migration plan, postmortem-free cut-over write-up |
| 7 to 9 | Study for a cloud architecture certification; review the system against Well-Architected | Certification attempt, review report |
| 10 to 12 | Publish one public case study; apply to Staff, Principal and Architect roles | Case study, targeted applications |
At the end of the year, Tolu doesn't have the word "architect" on her CV, but she can talk for an hour about decisions she made and why. That is what architect interviews test.
Do you need a certification to become a remote software architect?
No. Certifications help most for cloud-heavy roles and solutions architect roles, and much less for internal software architect or staff engineer roles, where your design track record counts for more. If you choose one, pick the cloud your target employers use.
| Certification | Cost (as of October 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional | $300 (about ₦408,600) | 75 questions, 180 minutes, valid 3 years |
| Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert | Exam AZ-305; price set by country | Requires Azure Administrator Associate first |
Naira conversion at ₦1,362 to $1, CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026. AWS notes that exchange rates may affect the price you pay.
A few details matter if you're planning dates:
- The AWS Solutions Architect - Professional exam is changing versions. Registration for SAP-C03 opens on 27 October 2026, and the last day to sit SAP-C02 is 16 November 2026. If you're mid-study on the old syllabus, check which version you'll actually sit.
- AWS recommends two or more years of experience designing and implementing solutions on AWS before the Professional exam.
- Microsoft's Azure Solutions Architect Expert requires the Azure Administrator Associate certification as a prerequisite, plus exam AZ-305. Microsoft says the price depends on the country where the exam is proctored, so check the Nigerian price on the exam page before budgeting. Microsoft renews this certification for free through an online assessment.
TOGAF, from The Open Group, comes up often in architect discussions, but it is aimed mainly at enterprise architecture. For more on the AWS route, see our guide to AWS engineer skills and certifications.
How much does a remote software architect earn?
There is no reliable public dataset for what Nigeria-based remote software architects are paid, so we won't make one up. Here is what can be said with sources.
- US benchmark: The US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a median annual pay of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025 (about ₦185.2 million a year at ₦1,362 to $1). BLS doesn't track software architects as a separate occupation, and architects usually earn above the developer median. This is US pay for people working in the US, not what a Nigeria-based contractor will be offered.
- What Nigeria-based architects are offered: Remote pay for people living in Nigeria is usually below US local pay. Many companies use location-based pay bands, and some pay contractors a flat monthly rate that is lower than their home-market salaries.
- Benefits beyond salary: Some ads list extras. Canonical's EMEA architect ad, for example, mentions a performance-driven annual bonus or commission and a $2,000 a year learning and development budget, but it doesn't publish the salary.
What moves an offer up: whether the role is employee or contractor, the company's pay policy (global band versus location-based), your cloud and domain depth (payments, healthcare and security pay well), and how much of the US or European working day you can cover. Our software engineer salary guide gives dollar and naira figures for the broader engineering market. For negotiating, see how to negotiate a dollar salary.
How remote software architect interviews work
Interview loops differ by company, but most architect hiring processes include some of the following:
- Recruiter screen: salary expectations, location, notice period and work authorisation. Say clearly that you live in Nigeria and how you can be paid.
- System design interview: a 45 to 60 minute session where you design something like a payments ledger, a notification service or a multi-tenant SaaS backend. You're judged on how you clarify requirements, trade-offs and failure handling, not on drawing the "right" diagram.
- Architecture walkthrough: you take the interviewers through a system you actually designed. Expect "What would you change now?" and "What broke?"
- Coding round: many architect loops still include one.
- Written exercise: some remote companies send a take-home design document or written questions. Canonical's application forms include several written questions and state that applicants must use their own words, and that AI-generated content will disqualify an application.
- Leadership and influence interview: stories about disagreements, mentoring and getting teams to adopt a standard.
Prepare a one-page summary of two systems you've designed, each with the problem, constraints, your decision, the alternatives and the outcome. Our software engineer interview questions give practice material, and the guide to completing a remote technical assessment covers take-home tasks.
Example (hypothetical): opening a system design answer
"Before I draw anything, can I check the scale? You said 2 million users. How many transactions a day, and what is the acceptable delay for a balance update? If it must be instant and correct, I'd keep the ledger in a single relational database with strict transactions and push notifications through a queue, because that keeps the money logic simple. If we later need more write capacity, here is where I'd split first."
This opening shows the interviewer what they want to see: you ask about requirements before choosing tools, and you tie each choice to a constraint.
Nigeria-specific things to prepare for
Company travel and visas
Many remote-first companies fly staff to in-person meetups. Canonical's ads mention in-person company events two to four times a year, each lasting one to two weeks, often in international locations that may require visas. For a Nigerian passport holder, that usually means Schengen, UK or US visa applications with waiting times. Keep your passport valid for well over a year, keep bank statements and employment letters organised, and ask the recruiter early whether the company supports visa letters.
Application forms that ask about school results
Some application forms ask questions Nigerian applicants don't expect from a tech employer. Canonical's forms, for example, ask about secondary school and degree results. Have your WAEC or NECO grades and your degree class ready, and answer honestly. Don't leave the form half done.
Time zones
Architects attend more live meetings than most engineers, so time-zone fit matters. Lagos is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. In winter, Lagos is one hour ahead of London and on the same time as Central Europe, which makes EMEA roles comfortable. US Eastern Time is six hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026 (five in summer), so a 10am New York design review starts at 4pm in Lagos. US Pacific is nine hours behind in winter. Before applying to a US-based team, check how many hours of overlap the ad requires.
Power and internet for a meeting-heavy role
An architect who drops off a design review because NEPA took light loses credibility quickly. Plan for an inverter or solar backup that can run your laptop, router and a light for a full working day, and keep two internet connections (for example a fibre or Starlink line plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network). Test your backup before every important call.
Tax and getting paid
Dollar income earned from Nigeria is still taxable in Nigeria. Our guide to tax for remote workers under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 explains how it applies to contractors and EOR employees.
Where to find remote software architect jobs open to Nigerians
- Company careers pages: remote-first companies that list "worldwide" or "EMEA" roles on their own boards are the most reliable source. Our guide to finding remote jobs on company career pages shows how to search Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby boards.
- Search several titles: "software architect", "staff engineer", "principal engineer", "solutions architect", "technical architect" and "platform architect".
- WorkRemote.ng listings: the tech jobs on WorkRemote are remote roles open to applicants living in Nigeria. WorkRemote reviews listings and aims to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but can't check every detail, and employers decide who they hire.
- Your network: senior roles are often filled through referrals. Former colleagues now abroad, open-source maintainers you've worked with and meetup organisers are worth a message.
Common mistakes that cost architect applications
- Applying with a developer CV. A list of languages and frameworks doesn't show architecture. Rewrite bullet points around decisions: "Designed the event-driven settlement flow that cut reconciliation time from two days to four hours" beats "Worked with Kafka". Use only real numbers from your own work.
- Ignoring the location line. Applying to "Remote, US" roles without US work authorisation wastes your time and the recruiter's.
- Over-designing in interviews. Proposing microservices, Kubernetes and three databases for a small product signals poor judgement.
- Letting coding lapse. Many architect loops include a coding round, and teams distrust architects who can't read the codebase.
- Paying for a "guaranteed placement". No genuine employer charges you to apply or interview. If someone asks for money, read our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.
Frequently asked questions
How many years of experience do I need to become a remote software architect?
There is no fixed number, but most architect roles go to engineers with several years of senior-level design work. The expired DRO Health ad asked for 3+ years as a minimum, while international ads often expect more, and AWS recommends two or more years of hands-on AWS design experience before its Professional exam. What counts is evidence of systems you designed, not years alone.
Can I become a software architect without a computer science degree?
Yes, though some employers list a degree. Canonical's EMEA architect ad, for example, asks for a technical degree "or a strong alternative path". A strong record of designed systems, written design documents and production incidents you handled can stand in for formal education at many companies.
Is a solutions architect the same as a software architect?
No. A solutions architect designs systems for customers and often supports sales, with travel and demos. A software architect designs systems for their own company's engineering teams. Both need system design skills, but the day-to-day work and interviews differ.
Do remote software architects still write code?
Usually, yes. Most remote architect and staff engineer roles expect you to prototype, review pull requests and read the codebase, and many interview loops include a coding round. The amount of coding falls as the role becomes more senior.
Which certification is best for a remote software architect role?
None is required. Pick one that matches your target employers' cloud. The AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional costs $300 as of October 2026, and the Azure Solutions Architect Expert requires the Azure Administrator Associate plus exam AZ-305. A strong design portfolio usually counts for more than either.
How much do remote software architects earn?
It depends heavily on the employer's pay policy and your location. The US median for software developers was $135,980 in May 2025 according to BLS, and architects typically earn more. Nigeria-based remote architects are usually offered less than US local pay, so research each company's band before negotiating.
Can I work as a remote software architect for a US company from Nigeria?
Yes, if the role accepts applicants living outside the US. Many US architect ads are restricted to US residents, so filter for "worldwide" or international roles and confirm on the live ad. You'll usually be hired as a contractor or through an employer of record.
What should my CV show for software architect roles?
It should show decisions and outcomes, not just technologies. Lead with systems you designed, migrations you led, the trade-offs you chose and the measurable results. Link a public case study or design document if you can.
Key takeaways
- A remote software architect job usually comes after years of senior engineering and documented design work. It is not an entry route into remote work.
- Search Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer and Solutions Architect titles as well as "software architect", and know which kind of architect role you actually want.
- From Nigeria, target roles tagged worldwide, EMEA or Africa, and confirm eligibility on the live ad (Canonical had both types open as of October 2026).
- Written design documents and decision records are the main evidence remote employers look for.
- Certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect - Professional ($300) help for cloud-heavy roles but don't replace a design track record.
- Prepare for Nigerian details: visa-dependent company travel, forms asking for school results, US time-zone overlap, and reliable power and internet.
Next steps
Pick one system you've worked on this month and write a one-page design document for it: the problem, the options, your recommendation and the risks. That document will help you in interviews more than another tutorial. Then search the remote jobs board for "architect", "staff engineer" and "principal engineer", and save each search with "Get email updates" so new matching roles arrive in a free daily email. If you want your CV rewritten around architecture decisions before you apply, the WorkRemote CV and LinkedIn review is part of Premium.
