You get a remote security engineer job by first doing two to five years of hands-on work next door to security: systems administration, DevOps, cloud, SOC analysis or software development. Then you show you can secure real systems, not just pass exams. Very few employers hire someone straight into this title remotely. The live ads we checked in October 2026 mostly asked for three years or more.
The good news is that some of those ads were open to people living in Nigeria. They included worldwide roles at large open-source companies and fully remote roles at African fintechs.
This guide covers what security engineers do day to day, what real job ads currently ask for, and which feeder route fits your background. It also covers the certifications that are worth paying for, how to build proof employers believe, and what's different about applying from Lagos, Abuja or Enugu: power for on-call shifts, visa-dependent company travel and how you get paid.
Quick answer
To get a remote security engineer job from Nigeria, first build two to five years in a neighbouring role (sysadmin, DevOps, cloud, SOC or development). Then specialise in cloud, application or operations security. Back that up with public proof, such as a homelab, detection rules and write-ups, plus one targeted certification. Apply only to roles whose ads say worldwide, EMEA, Africa or Nigeria, and confirm eligibility on the employer's own page.
What a remote security engineer actually does
A security engineer builds and maintains the controls that keep an organisation's systems safe. That covers identity and access rules, cloud configuration guardrails, detection rules, hardened servers and security checks inside the deployment pipeline. A security analyst mostly watches and investigates. A security engineer mostly builds.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics groups this work under information security analysts. Its list of duties includes monitoring networks for breaches, maintaining firewalls and encryption, checking systems for vulnerabilities and helping test disaster recovery plans. BLS also notes that many people in the occupation previously worked in IT, often as network and systems administrators. That matches what employers ask for in remote ads.
In remote job ads, "security engineer" usually means one of these specialisms:
| Specialism | What you build or own | Usual feeder role |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud security | IAM, guardrails, posture tools on AWS, GCP, Azure | Cloud or DevOps engineer |
| Security operations | SIEM detections, SOAR playbooks, incident response | SOC analyst, sysadmin |
| Application security | Threat models, code review, pipeline scanning | Software developer |
| Product or open-source security | Vulnerability fixes, patches, advisories | Developer with Linux depth |
Each specialism gets its own article in this series. For depth on one track, read our guides to remote cloud security engineer jobs and finding remote application security jobs.
What live remote security engineer ads asked for (October 2026)
We opened real ads to see the hiring bar, rather than guessing. Each of the ads below was checked on 27 October 2026. Ads close and eligibility changes, so treat these as examples of what employers ask for, not as openings you can count on.
| Employer and role | Location stated | Experience asked |
|---|---|---|
| Canonical, Ubuntu Security Engineer | Home based, worldwide | Graduate to senior levels |
| Canonical, Senior Security Operations Engineer | Home based, worldwide | 10+ years |
| Yellow Card, Security Operations Engineer | Fully remote, no country listed | 3 to 5 years |
| Moniepoint, Cloud Security Engineer | Lagos, Nigeria, remote | 3+ years (closed when checked) |
Canonical: worldwide, but with a demanding application
Canonical's Ubuntu Security Engineer ad says it considers candidates from graduate to senior level. It is one of the rare security engineering roles open to early-career people worldwide. The ad asks for a solid grasp of common vulnerability types and how to fix them, plus skill in at least one language (C, Python, Go, Rust and others). It also wants Linux experience, ideally Debian or Ubuntu, and familiarity with coordinated disclosure.
The Senior Security Operations Engineer ad from the same company asks for 10+ years of experience, SOC work, Python and Bash, Git, infrastructure as code and Kubernetes. It lists frameworks such as NIST CSF, CIS Controls and ISO 27001 as useful extras.
Both Canonical ads say staff attend in-person company events two to four times a year, for one to two weeks at a time, often abroad and sometimes needing visas. The application form asks for your degree results with the grading system, plus your secondary school maths and language results. It also states that AI-generated answers will disqualify an application.
Yellow Card: a clear picture of mid-level security operations
The Yellow Card Security Operations Engineer ad, which we opened on its investor's job board, was posted on 24 June 2026 and still showed "Apply now" when checked. It calls the role fully remote, needing fluent English and the ability to work across time zones.
It asks for three to five years in security operations, cloud security or infrastructure security, with hands-on AWS security (IAM policy design, CloudTrail, GuardDuty). It also wants Kubernetes and EKS security, SIEM alert triage and detection writing, vulnerability management with CVSS scoring, Terraform review and incident response. AWS Security Specialty certification is listed as preferred. Check Yellow Card's own careers page before applying.
Moniepoint: what a Nigerian fintech wanted
A Moniepoint Cloud Security Engineer ad, marked "Lagos, Nigeria, remote" and posted on 12 August 2026, had stopped taking applications when we checked. It still shows a typical stack for this kind of role. It asked for three or more years in DevSecOps or cloud security and hands-on security across GCP, AWS and Azure. It also wanted Terraform and Ansible, Kubernetes hardening, GitLab CI/CD security, and tools such as Wiz and Netskope. The certifications it named were CCSP, CCSK, AWS Security Specialty, Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer and Azure AZ-500.
What the ads have in common
- Cloud (usually AWS) and Kubernetes come up in almost every ad.
- Scripting in Python or Bash, and reading infrastructure as code, are expected rather than optional.
- Detection and response work is built on frameworks like MITRE ATT&CK, NIST and CIS.
- Certifications appear as "preferred", not as a replacement for experience.
- Most ads want three years or more. The Canonical graduate-level ad is the exception.
Aggregator pages, such as Jobgether's Nigeria security engineer listings, are useful for spotting employers. When we checked, though, most cards there showed regions (EMEA, European Union, Anywhere) rather than Nigeria by name. The page also mixed employer ads with things like a training institute's "expression of interest" form. Always click through to the employer's own careers page.
Can Nigerians get remote security engineer jobs?
Yes, as long as the ad accepts people living in Nigeria and doesn't demand work authorisation, a security clearance or residence somewhere else. Security roles are more restricted than most remote jobs. Government contractors and some US companies need US citizens or clearances, and you should skip those ads entirely.
Location labels in remote ads usually fall into these groups:
- Worldwide or "Anywhere": open to Nigeria unless the ad lists excluded countries. Canonical's ads use "Home based, worldwide".
- EMEA: Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Some EMEA ads quietly mean "countries where we have an entity", so check the country list on the application form. Our explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job ad covers this.
- Nigeria or Africa named: the clearest signal, common with African fintechs and crypto companies.
- US-only, UK-only, or "clearance required": not open to you from Nigeria.
You may be hired as a direct employee, through an employer of record (EOR) or as an independent contractor. Each has different tax and leave consequences, so read our guide to contractor versus EOR employee status in Nigeria before you sign.
The four routes into security engineering
Almost nobody starts their career as a remote security engineer. Pick the route closest to what you already do.
From IT support or systems administration
This is the route BLS describes as common. Linux and Windows administration, Active Directory, networking and patching are the foundations of security operations. Add log analysis and a SIEM (Security Information and Event Management, the system that collects and searches security logs), then move towards detection engineering. If you're still in support, our guide on moving from IT support to cloud engineering is a good next step.
From DevOps or cloud engineering
This is probably the shortest path to the roles in the ads above. You already know Terraform, CI/CD and Kubernetes. What you need to add is IAM least-privilege design, cloud posture tools, secrets management and container image scanning. Our cloud engineer career guide and DevOps engineer career guide cover the base skills.
From SOC analyst
SOC (Security Operations Centre) analysts triage alerts all day. The step up to engineer means writing and tuning the detections yourself, automating response with SOAR (security orchestration, automation and response) and owning cloud telemetry. Many people move into engineering at the company they already work for. For the analyst stage, see our cybersecurity analyst career guide and our guide to finding remote SOC analyst jobs.
From software development
Developers who understand vulnerability classes (injection, broken authentication, insecure deserialisation) are valuable in application and product security. The Canonical Ubuntu Security Engineer ad is a good example: it values code auditing and patching skills above a security job title.
If you have no IT experience at all, be honest with yourself. A remote security engineer job is a two-to-four-year goal, not a three-month one. Start with our guide to entry-level remote cybersecurity jobs.
Skills and certifications worth your time
Core skills employers test
- Linux and networking: reading logs, firewall rules, TCP/IP, DNS and TLS.
- One cloud in depth: usually AWS (IAM, VPC, CloudTrail, GuardDuty, KMS), or GCP or Azure if you're targeting a particular employer.
- Scripting: Python for automation and Bash for glue work.
- Infrastructure as code: Terraform at minimum, so you can spot a misconfiguration in a pull request.
- Containers: Kubernetes RBAC, network policies and image scanning.
- Detection and response: writing SIEM rules mapped to MITRE ATT&CK and running an incident from start to finish.
- Written English: remote security teams work through tickets, runbooks and incident reports.
Certifications: helpful, not a substitute for experience
The ads above list certifications as preferred. Choose one that matches your target specialism rather than collecting badges.
| Certification | Level | Cost (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) | Entry, no experience needed | $199 exam, then $50 a year |
| CompTIA Security+ | Entry to junior | Check CompTIA's store |
| AWS Certified Security Specialty | Mid, cloud | Check AWS |
| CCSP, CCSK, AZ-500, Google Cloud Security Engineer | Mid, cloud | Check provider |
One update many older Nigerian guides miss: ISC2's free "One Million Certified in Cybersecurity" programme closed to new enrolment on 20 May 2026. The standard CC exam now costs $199, which is about ₦271,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN rate, 23 October 2026). Unexpired free exam codes must be used by 31 December 2026, and certified members pay a $50 annual maintenance fee. ISC2's CC certification page confirms that no work experience is required.
CompTIA's Security+ page lists security engineer among its target roles and says version 8 is expected around 17 November 2026. If you're about to book, check which version your study material covers. For a full comparison, see our guide to the best cybersecurity certifications for remote jobs.
Build proof that hiring managers believe
Experience is what employers ask for, so the job is to create evidence they can check. Good proof for a security engineer looks like work, not certificates.
- Run a homelab in the cloud. Use a free-tier AWS account with CloudTrail and GuardDuty switched on. Deliberately misconfigure an S3 bucket or IAM role, then write up how you detected and fixed it. Set billing alerts first.
- Publish detection rules. Write Sigma or SIEM rules for specific ATT&CK techniques and keep them in a public GitHub repository with test data.
- Write infrastructure as code with guardrails. For example, a Terraform module that enforces encryption and least privilege, with policy checks in CI.
- Contribute to open source security. Triage issues, fix a vulnerability in a package or improve a security tool's documentation. For roles like Canonical's, this is direct evidence.
- Write incident-style reports. A one-page write-up of a lab incident (timeline, impact, containment, lessons) shows the written communication remote teams depend on.
Example (hypothetical): Tunde is a DevOps engineer at a Lagos logistics company. He spends three months securing his own team's AWS account. He enforces MFA, removes unused access keys, adds image scanning to the GitLab pipeline and writes two detection rules for suspicious IAM activity. His CV can now describe security engineering outcomes with numbers his manager would confirm. That beats a list of course certificates.

Applying: CV, application forms and interviews
Your CV
Lead with security outcomes, written as action plus result: "Reduced IAM users with admin rights from 40 to 6", "Wrote 25 detection rules that cut false-positive alerts by a third". Name the tools from the ad (CloudTrail, Wiz, Terraform, EKS) where you genuinely used them. Keep it to two pages and add your GitHub link near the top. If you want a second pair of eyes, see what the WorkRemote team changes on a CV and LinkedIn profile.
Long application forms
Some employers use detailed questionnaires instead of quick-apply buttons. Canonical's forms ask about academic results, your work history over the past ten years and your experience of serious threat scenarios. Give honest, specific answers in your own words: the form warns that AI-generated answers will be disqualified. Have your WAEC or NECO and degree results, with the grading scale, ready before you start.
Technical interviews
Expect some mix of these: a scenario walk-through ("An IAM key was leaked on GitHub at 2am. What do you do?"), a design review (secure this architecture), a Terraform or code review exercise, and a take-home task. Practise talking through your reasoning out loud on a video call. Our cybersecurity analyst interview questions cover many of the fundamentals.
Pay: benchmarks and how to judge an offer
None of the four ads we opened published a salary. Canonical says pay depends on location, experience and performance. In practice, that means a Nigeria-based hire is usually offered less than someone based in the US.
For a benchmark, BLS reports a median annual wage of $129,180 for US information security analysts in May 2025. The lowest 10% earned under $75,090 and the highest 10% over $199,850. BLS projects 21% employment growth from 2025 to 2035. These are US pay figures for an occupation that includes security engineers. They are not what a Nigeria-based remote hire will be offered, and remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually well below US local pay.
To judge an offer, convert it to naira, then account for what the arrangement leaves you to pay for yourself.
Example (hypothetical, not a market figure): A contractor offer of $3,500 a month works out to ₦4,767,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN rate, 23 October 2026). As a contractor, you cover your own power backup, internet, laptop, health insurance and tax, and you get no paid leave unless the contract says so. An EOR employee offer at a lower headline figure may include leave and benefits that close the gap.

Nigeria-specific realities for security engineers
Power and internet during incidents
Security roles often include on-call rotations. You can't contain an incident during a grid outage on a single network. Budget for an inverter or solar setup that can run your laptop and router for a full shift. Keep two internet connections, for example fibre or Starlink plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network.
Time zones and on-call
Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern time is six hours behind Lagos, so a US-based on-call handover could land late in your evening. In winter, UK teams are one hour behind Lagos and Central European teams are on the same time. That's one reason EMEA-labelled roles suit Nigeria-based engineers.
Company travel and visas
Some worldwide employers expect in-person meetups. Canonical's ads mention two to four events a year abroad. With a Nigerian passport, that means planning visa applications early and keeping your passport valid. Answer travel questions on application forms honestly.
Getting paid
Contractors are often paid through Deel, Remote or direct USD transfer. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options and fees.
Scams aimed at security job seekers
Treat any "security engineer" offer that asks you to pay for training, equipment or a background check as a red flag. Be wary too of recruiters who switch the conversation to Telegram. Read our guide on spotting remote job scams in Nigeria before you share your passport or BVN.
Mistakes that cost applicants interviews
- Applying to clearance or US-only roles. It wastes your time and can mark your profile as careless in the employer's applicant tracking system.
- Collecting certificates without projects. Ads list certifications as "preferred"; experience and proof are what get interviews.
- Going broad instead of deep. "Cybersecurity enthusiast" loses to "AWS and Kubernetes security engineer with published detections".
- Ignoring the cloud. Every ad we opened mentioned a cloud platform.
- Using AI-written answers on questionnaires. Some employers explicitly disqualify them.
- Waiting to be "ready". Apply to adjacent roles (DevSecOps, cloud security, SOC engineer) while you build towards the title.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a remote security engineer job without experience?
Rarely. Most ads we checked in October 2026 asked for three years or more. Canonical's Ubuntu Security Engineer ad, which considers graduates, was an exception. Beginners usually start in IT support, SOC or development and move into security engineering later.
What is the difference between a security analyst and a security engineer?
An analyst mainly monitors, triages and investigates alerts. An engineer designs and builds the controls, detections and automation that analysts use. Many engineers start as analysts.
Is ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity still free?
No, not for new candidates. ISC2 closed new enrolment in its free programme on 20 May 2026, and the CC exam now costs $199 plus a $50 annual fee after you pass. Unexpired free exam codes must be used by 31 December 2026.
Which certification should a Nigerian aiming for security engineering take first?
Pick the one that matches your target specialism. ISC2 CC or CompTIA Security+ suit beginners. AWS Security Specialty or a similar cloud security certification suits people with cloud experience, and several of the cloud security ads we opened named one.
Do I need a degree to become a remote security engineer?
Not always, but some employers weigh it heavily. BLS says a bachelor's degree is typical, though some people enter with training and certifications. Canonical's forms ask for degree results but also accept "a compelling alternative background".
How much do remote security engineers earn?
In the US, the BLS median for information security analysts was $129,180 a year in May 2025. Nigeria-based remote hires are usually offered less, and few ads publish pay, so research each employer and compare offers in naira after your own costs.
Which time zones suit Nigeria-based security engineers best?
EMEA teams fit best. Lagos is one hour ahead of London and level with Central Europe in winter. US roles can push on-call handovers late into your evening, since US Eastern time is six hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026.
Are remote security engineer jobs in Nigeria paid in dollars?
Roles with foreign employers are usually paid in dollars, often through a payroll platform or direct transfer. Roles with Nigerian employers may pay in naira even when fully remote, so confirm the currency before the final interview.
Key takeaways
- A remote security engineer job is usually reached after two to five years in IT, DevOps, cloud, SOC or development work.
- Live ads in October 2026 consistently asked for cloud security (mostly AWS), Kubernetes, scripting, infrastructure as code and detection skills.
- Some ads were open to Nigeria-based applicants, labelled worldwide or fully remote. Always confirm eligibility on the employer's own page.
- ISC2 CC is no longer free for new candidates. Choose one certification that matches your specialism and pair it with public projects.
- US pay figures are benchmarks only. Compare offers in naira after power, internet, equipment, tax and leave.
- Plan for on-call resilience (two internet connections, power backup) and for visa-dependent company travel.
Next steps
Pick your route from the four above. Then spend the next month on one visible project: a secured AWS account, a set of published detections or an open-source fix. When you're ready to apply, browse remote tech jobs open to applicants in Nigeria. Each listing shows the company, its website and where applicants may live. After a search for "security engineer", use "Get email updates" to receive a free daily digest of new matching jobs. If you want help with applications, WorkRemote Premium (₦29,999 a month) includes CV and LinkedIn rewrites, applications made on your behalf and one-on-one interview prep. It also guarantees an interview invitation within your first week; that's an interview invite, not a job offer.
