Updated 16 min read

The remote cybersecurity jobs most open to Nigerians are security operations (SOC) analyst, governance, risk and compliance (GRC), application security, cloud security and security engineering. You'll find them at companies that hire worldwide, across EMEA, or in Nigeria specifically. The catch is that fully remote entry-level security jobs are rare. Most global security ads expect real experience in IT, networking or software first.
This guide compares the roles, shows how open each one is to someone living in Nigeria, and points to real ads we opened in October 2026 that accept applicants here. It also explains what "worldwide" and "EMEA" mean in a security ad and what the pay benchmarks look like in dollars and naira. You'll see which certifications are worth your money now that one popular free route has closed, and how shift work fits around WAT. If you want the full skills and course path for one role, go to our cybersecurity analyst career guide.
Quick answer
Nigerians can get remote cybersecurity jobs, but mostly at mid level and above. The roles that most often accept Nigeria-based applicants are SOC analyst, GRC analyst, application security engineer, cloud security engineer and security engineer. Some companies, such as Canonical, advertise security roles as "home based, worldwide" (as of October 2026). Read the location line on every ad, because many security roles are limited to US or EU residents or need a security clearance.
How we chose these roles
We didn't rank these jobs by pay alone. We judged each role on four things:
- Openness to Nigeria: how often the role shows up in ads that allow worldwide, EMEA, Africa or Nigeria-based applicants, based on the ads and job boards we checked in October 2026.
- Remote fit: whether the work can be done fully online, or whether it needs physical access to hardware, client sites or classified systems.
- Entry route: how a Nigerian can realistically get the experience the ads ask for.
- Pay ceiling: where the role can take you in dollar terms over time.
This is editorial judgement built on the sources linked below, not a survey. Hiring rules change, so always trust the live ad over any list, this one included.
Remote cybersecurity jobs compared
| Role | Typical entry route | Openness to Nigeria |
|---|---|---|
| SOC analyst | IT support, help desk, networking | Good, shift work helps |

The sections below cover each role briefly, with a link to the deeper guide in this series.
The best remote cybersecurity jobs for Nigerians, role by role
SOC analyst
A SOC analyst watches alerts from security tools (a SIEM such as Splunk or Microsoft Sentinel, endpoint tools such as CrowdStrike or Microsoft Defender), sorts real incidents from noise, and escalates. SOCs run around the clock, which works in Nigeria's favour. A company covering the UK, Europe and the US often needs people on shifts that are awkward for its home staff but normal hours in Lagos.
Most SOC analysts come from IT support, help desk or networking. Expect shift rotas, on-call weekends and a strong need for reliable power. Our planned guide on finding remote SOC analyst jobs covers the hiring channels and shift patterns.
GRC analyst
GRC means governance, risk and compliance. The job is writing and checking security policies, mapping controls to frameworks such as ISO 27001 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, running risk assessments and supporting audits. It's less technical than SOC work but just as valuable, and it suits people coming from audit, banking risk or compliance.
Nigerian fintechs and banks have pushed many local professionals into this work, and remote GRC roles at payment companies do get advertised for Nigeria. See remote governance, risk and compliance jobs for the frameworks and certificates employers ask for.
Application security engineer
Application security (AppSec) engineers find and fix vulnerabilities in software before attackers do. That means code reviews, threat modelling, running static and dynamic scanners in the CI/CD pipeline, and coaching developers. It's one of the most remote-friendly security jobs because everything happens in code repositories and pull requests.
The usual route in is software development. If you already write production code in Python, Java, JavaScript or Go, AppSec is a natural move. Our planned guide to remote application security jobs explains how to make that switch.
Cloud security engineer
Cloud security engineers lock down AWS, Azure or Google Cloud setups: identity and access rules, network policies, logging, secrets, and container security in Kubernetes. Demand follows cloud adoption, and the work is fully remote by nature.
This role rarely hires beginners. Most people come from cloud or DevOps engineering (see our cloud engineer career guide and DevOps engineer guide) and add security later. More detail is in remote cloud security engineer jobs explained.
Security engineer (general and open source)
"Security engineer" covers building and running security tooling, hardening Linux systems, automating detection and responding to incidents. At open-source companies the job can also mean patching vulnerabilities in software used by millions. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, advertised several such roles as home based worldwide in October 2026 (see the examples section below).
These roles tend to be senior, and the hiring bar is high. Our planned guide on how to get a remote security engineer job goes through what employers test for.
Penetration tester
Penetration testers attack systems with permission to find weaknesses, then write reports. Remote pentest work exists, but it often comes as contract or consultancy engagements rather than permanent roles. Some government and defence clients also require testers to be citizens or hold clearance.
Bug bounty platforms are one of the few ways a Nigerian can build a public track record in offensive security without an employer. Read remote penetration tester jobs: career requirements before choosing this path, because the report-writing side matters as much as the hacking.
IT auditor
IT auditors check whether technology controls (access reviews, change management, backups) work as described. Many Nigerian auditors trained at the big audit firms or in banks, and that experience carries over. Moniepoint's careers board listed a Head, IT Audit role in Lagos when we checked in October 2026, which shows the work is in demand locally even when it isn't remote. See how to find remote IT auditor jobs.
Fraud and compliance analyst
Fraud analysts, AML (anti-money laundering) analysts and compliance analysts sit next to security, especially in fintech. Moniepoint's careers board showed several remote fraud roles when we checked in October 2026. These jobs suit people from banking operations and are a realistic way in for non-engineers. Our fraud analyst career guide and compliance analyst guide cover the skills.
Cybersecurity sales and pre-sales
Security vendors need people who can sell and demo their products to banks and large firms in West Africa. These roles are often based in Nigeria and remote. When we checked in October 2026, Cortex by Palo Alto Networks was advertising a Major Account Manager role for financial services in West Africa, marked "Remote - Nigeria". If you have B2B sales experience and understand security, this route is often overlooked.
AI security and threat-intelligence contract work
Some AI training platforms now post short contracts for people with threat-intelligence or red-teaming knowledge to test and train AI models. Job boards showed such listings open to Nigeria in October 2026. Treat them as side income, check the platform carefully, and never pay to join. Our planned guide on finding legitimate AI training jobs online explains how to vet them.
Real examples of security roles open to Nigeria-based applicants
These are ads we opened in October 2026. They show what open eligibility looks like. They aren't recommendations, and any of them may close or change. Check the live ad before applying.
| Employer and role | Location stated | Notable requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Canonical: Ubuntu Security Engineer | Home based, worldwide | Graduate to senior level |
| Canonical: Security Software Engineer | Home based, worldwide | Security champion experience, Linux |
| Canonical: Senior Security Operations Engineer | Home based, worldwide | 10+ years, SOC experience |
| Cortex by Palo Alto Networks: Major Account Manager, FSI West Africa | Remote, Nigeria | Complex solution sales, SaaS |
A few details from these ads are worth noticing.
The Ubuntu Security Engineer ad is open "from Graduate to Senior". That's unusual for a worldwide security role. It asks for an understanding of common vulnerability types, coordinated disclosure, one or more programming languages and Linux experience.
The Security Software Engineer ad says pay depends on location, experience and performance, and lists a $2,000 yearly learning budget. It also requires international travel at least twice a year. For a Nigerian passport holder, that means visa applications, so ask early how the company supports them.
The Senior Security Operations Engineer ad asks for 10+ years of experience. Worldwide eligibility doesn't make a role easier to get. It only means you're allowed to apply.
The Palo Alto Networks West Africa ad was posted on 9 June 2026 and labels the location "Remote - Nigeria". It's a reminder that security careers aren't only technical.
Job boards that tag roles by country, such as Himalayas' Nigeria cybersecurity page, also showed contract security engineering, governance consulting and volunteer roles in October 2026. Many of those listings didn't state a location restriction clearly, so open the employer's own page before you spend time on an application.
How to read the location line on a security job ad
The location line decides whether you can apply at all. For security jobs it's stricter than for most roles, because companies worry about data access, regulation and clearances.
| What the ad says | What it usually means for you |
|---|---|
| Worldwide or anywhere | You can apply from Nigeria; pay may be location-based |
| EMEA | Europe, Middle East and Africa; Nigeria is often included but check |
| Africa or a country list naming Nigeria | Open to you |
| Remote, Nigeria | Open to you, often a local or regional role |
| US only, UK only, EU only | Closed unless you already live and can work there |
| Security clearance required | Effectively closed to Nigerian residents |
Watch for these phrases in security ads in particular:
- "Must be eligible to work in..." means the right to work in that country, not just the skills.
- "Access to regulated data" (health, defence or government data) often comes with residency rules, even when the job is remote.
- "Remote, with occasional travel" means you'll need visas, as in the Canonical ads above.
Our planned explainers on what EMEA means in a job ad and what worldwide remote means from Nigeria go further.
What remote cybersecurity jobs pay
There's no reliable public dataset of what Nigeria-based remote security staff earn, so we'll give you the benchmark and the reasons your offer will differ.
The benchmark is the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its Occupational Outlook for information security analysts puts the median annual pay at $129,180 in May 2025. It projects 21% employment growth from 2025 to 2035. At the house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), $129,180 is about ₦176 million a year, or roughly ₦14.7 million a month.
That's the median for people working in the US, and most are US-based employees. It isn't what a company will offer someone in Lagos or Enugu. Expect less, for three reasons:
- Location-based pay: many companies set pay by where you live. Canonical's ad says outright that pay depends on location.
- Contractor status: many Nigerians are hired as contractors, without pension, health cover or paid leave. A contractor rate needs to be higher than a salary to come out the same. See contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you.
- Seniority: worldwide security roles lean senior, and pay follows that.
Example (hypothetical): a Nigeria-based SOC analyst is offered $3,000 a month as a contractor. At ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026), that's about ₦4,086,000 a month before tax and withdrawal fees. This number shows how the maths works. It isn't a market rate. Ask for the pay range at the first call, and compare it against the benefits you won't get as a contractor.

Certifications worth your money in 2026
Certificates won't replace experience in security, but they get your CV past keyword filters and show you're serious. Three entry options, with the facts checked in October 2026:
- ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC): entry level, no work experience required, covering security principles, access control, network security, security operations and incident response (ISC2 CC page). The free route through ISC2's "One Million Certified in Cybersecurity" programme closed to new enrolments on 20 May 2026. Existing exam codes must be used by 31 December 2026, and passing candidates pay a $50 annual maintenance fee (ISC2 programme page). Check ISC2's site for the current paid exam price.
- CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701): up to 90 questions in 90 minutes. CompTIA recommends Network+ plus two years in a security or systems administration role (CompTIA Security+ V7 page). The English version retires on 11 June 2027, and CompTIA says V8 is expected around 17 November 2026. Buy the voucher for the version you'll actually sit.
- Google Cybersecurity Certificate: delivered through Coursera, and Google describes it as needing no relevant experience or degree. Coursera charges a subscription, so finish quickly to keep the cost down.

Nigeria-specific realities of remote security work
Shifts and time zones
Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. Since UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026, London is one hour behind Lagos, so a UK 9am to 5pm shift runs 10am to 6pm in Lagos. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern time is six hours behind, so a New York 9am to 5pm shift runs 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. SOC teams that "follow the sun" may want you on the European day shift, or on early-morning cover for the US overnight. Ask for the rota in writing before you accept.
Power, internet and on-call
A security analyst who drops offline mid-incident is a real problem, and employers know it. Plan for an inverter or solar backup, and for two internet routes: two providers, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot. Starlink is available in Nigeria if your area has poor coverage, but check the current price yourself. For internet options in detail, see best internet options for working remotely in Nigeria.
Device and account security
Security employers will expect you to practise what you preach. Use a dedicated work device, don't share it with family, turn on full-disk encryption, and use a password manager and app-based two-factor authentication. Many companies ship a managed laptop. If yours doesn't, ask how they want you to secure your own.
Travel and visas
Worldwide employers often hold in-person team events abroad. Nigerian passport holders usually need visas for these trips, and they take time. Ask the recruiter whether the company provides invitation letters and covers visa costs.
A 90-day plan to move towards a remote security role
This is a sample plan for someone who already works in IT support or a junior technical role. Adjust it to your starting point.
- Days 1 to 15: choose one target role from the table above and read 20 live ads for it that allow Nigeria, EMEA or worldwide applicants. List the tools and skills that come up most.
- Days 16 to 45: build hands-on skills with a home lab. Free tiers on cloud platforms, a Linux virtual machine and an open-source SIEM are enough to practise log analysis and detection rules.
- Days 46 to 60: sit one entry certificate that matches your target, such as Security+ or ISC2 CC for SOC, or a cloud certificate for cloud security.
- Days 61 to 75: publish evidence. Write up two lab investigations, a sample risk assessment, or a vulnerability you found and responsibly disclosed. Our planned guide to building a cybersecurity portfolio shows formats that work.
- Days 76 to 90: rewrite your CV around security outcomes, apply to roles whose location line includes you, and prepare with our cybersecurity analyst interview questions.
If you're starting with no IT background at all, begin with our IT support career guide and the planned guide to entry-level remote cybersecurity jobs. Most remote security careers start one step earlier, in support or networking.
Mistakes and scams to watch for in security job hunting
- Paying for "guaranteed" ethical hacking jobs: bootcamps or "agencies" that promise a remote security job if you pay a fee are a common trap. A real employer never charges you to be hired. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the patterns.
- "Test" tasks that ask you to attack real systems: if a "recruiter" asks you to break into a website or account to prove your skills, refuse. Authorised testing comes with a written scope, and anything else can be a crime.
- Applying to clearance or citizenship roles: you waste time and may end up on a recruiter's reject list. Read the location line first.
- Collecting certificates without evidence: a list of five certificates and no lab write-ups looks weaker than one certificate and two clear projects.
- Ignoring the contract type: "contractor" and "employee" mean very different things for leave, pay protection and tax.
Frequently asked questions
Can Nigerians get remote cybersecurity jobs with foreign companies?
Yes, when the ad allows applicants in Nigeria, EMEA or worldwide and doesn't require clearance or local work rights. Canonical, for example, advertised several security roles as home based worldwide in October 2026. Many other security roles are limited to the US or EU, so check each ad.
What is the easiest remote cybersecurity job to get from Nigeria?
There's no truly easy one, but SOC analyst and GRC analyst are the most common ways in. SOC roles suit people from IT support. GRC suits people from audit, banking risk or compliance. Fraud and compliance analyst roles in fintech are another realistic route for non-engineers.
Do I need a degree to get a remote cybersecurity job?
Not always, but many ads prefer one. The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry education for information security analysts in the US. Canonical's security ads ask for a STEM degree or a compelling alternative path. Strong evidence of skills and certificates can make up for a missing degree at some employers.
Is the ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity exam still free?
No, not for new candidates. ISC2 closed new enrolments to its free programme on 20 May 2026, and existing exam codes must be used by 31 December 2026. After passing, there's a $50 annual maintenance fee.
How much do remote cybersecurity analysts earn?
The US median for information security analysts was $129,180 a year in May 2025, according to the BLS. That's about ₦176 million at ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026). Nigeria-based remote workers are usually offered less, because many companies pay by location and hire Nigerians as contractors.
Do remote SOC jobs involve night shifts in Nigeria?
Often, yes. Covering US working hours means working from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos during US winter time, and some SOCs run overnight rotas. European day shifts fit WAT well, so ask which shift pattern you'll be on.
Can I do bug bounties from Nigeria to build experience?
Yes. Bug bounty programmes let you test in-scope targets legally and build a public record of findings. Stick strictly to each programme's published scope and rules, and learn how the platform pays out before you rely on it for income.
Key takeaways
- SOC analyst, GRC, application security, cloud security and security engineering are the security roles most open to Nigeria-based applicants.
- Worldwide security roles exist (Canonical listed several in October 2026), but they lean senior. Being allowed to apply is not the same as being likely to get hired.
- Read the location line first: roles that are US only, EU only or need clearance are closed to Nigerian residents.
- US pay benchmarks such as the BLS median of $129,180 a year are a ceiling to aim at, not the offer you should expect.
- The free ISC2 CC route closed in May 2026. Budget for certificates, and back them up with lab write-ups and projects.
- Reliable power, two internet routes and a secured work device matter more in security than in most remote jobs.
