Internal auditor interview questions for remote roles

Internal audit interviews check three things: whether you understand risk and controls, whether you can write a finding that stands up, and whether you will stay independent when a senior manager leans on you. For remote roles they add questions about getting evidence from people you will never meet. Here is what to expect.

About the role and your experience

Openers that check you understand the job and have done the work.

  1. What is the difference between internal and external audit?

    Why they ask

Many candidates come from external audit; they want to see you have made the switch in your head.

    How to answer

Cover purpose, scope, who you report to and focus on controls and risk.

    Show a sample answer

External audit gives an opinion on the financial statements to shareholders. Internal audit works for the organisation, reporting to the audit committee, and looks at whether risks across the business, not just financial reporting, are managed well. The focus is controls and improvement, not one opinion a year.

  2. Which qualifications do you hold, and are you working towards the CIA?

    Why they ask

    Credentials are checked.

    How to answer

State them with status and plans.

    Show a sample answer

I'm ICAN-qualified and passed ACCA in 2024. I've passed CIA Part 1 and I'm sitting Part 2 in March.

  3. Why internal audit, and why remote?

    Why they ask

    Motivation and staying power.

    How to answer

    Be specific.

    Show a sample answer

I enjoyed the controls side of external audit more than the year-end rush. Internal audit lets me follow a problem through to the fix. Remote with a global team means I can audit processes in several countries from Lagos, which I couldn't do in a local role.

Technical questions

What you know and how you'd do the work, often with a live task or test.

  1. How would you build a risk-based audit plan for a fintech with operations in four countries?

    Why they ask

    Planning shows judgement.

    How to answer

Start from strategy and risks, rate them, map to auditable areas, consider regulators and previous issues.

    Show a sample answer

I'd start with the risk register and talk to the executives about what keeps them up at night. For a fintech that's usually fraud, KYC and AML compliance, IT security and settlement. I'd rate each area by impact and likelihood, add regulatory requirements in each country, then plan the highest risks first and leave capacity for ad-hoc reviews.

  2. Design a test for the control "all supplier payments over $10,000 are approved by the CFO".

    Why they ask

Control testing is the core of the job.

    How to answer

Define the population, sample, attributes, evidence and what counts as an exception.

    Show a sample answer

Population: all payments over $10,000 in the period, pulled from the bank and the ERP and reconciled to each other. I'd test a sample, say 25, or analyse the full population. For each, I check there's CFO approval in the system dated before payment. A missing, late or wrong approver is an exception. I'd also check for payments split to stay under $10,000.

  3. Write me a finding, out loud, for a control that failed.

    Why they ask

Findings are what internal audit produces.

    How to answer

Use condition, criteria, cause, effect, recommendation.

    Show a sample answer

Condition: 6 of 25 new vendors tested had no bank detail verification. Criteria: the vendor policy requires a call-back on all new bank details. Cause: the step isn't enforced in the system and the AP team was short-staffed. Effect: risk of paying a fraudulent account. Recommendation: make call-back evidence a required field before a vendor can be activated, owned by the AP manager by 31 January.

  4. What are IT general controls, and why do they matter to a non-IT audit?

    Why they ask

    Every process relies on systems.

    How to answer

Name the main areas and connect them to business controls.

    Show a sample answer

Access management, change management, and operations like backups and job monitoring. If anyone can change the ERP's approval limits or give themselves access, the payment approval control I just tested isn't reliable, however well it looked in my sample.

  5. What is SOX, and have you tested SOX controls?

    Why they ask

SOX testing is a major source of remote audit work.

    How to answer

Explain section 404 at a basic level and your hands-on experience.

    Show a sample answer

Sarbanes-Oxley requires US-listed companies to assess their internal control over financial reporting each year. I've tested key controls in revenue and procure-to-pay for a US client while at my firm, documented walkthroughs and tested both design and operating effectiveness.

Behavioural questions

Past situations. Answer with a real example: what happened, what you did, what changed.

  1. Management disagrees with your finding. What do you do?

    Why they ask

    Independence under pressure.

    How to answer

Separate facts from opinion, listen, re-check evidence, and escalate if needed.

    Show a sample answer

First I check whether they disagree with the facts or the conclusion. If they show me evidence I missed, I correct it. If they agree with the facts but don't like the rating, I explain the criteria and keep it, and their response goes into the report. If we can't agree, the head of audit decides.

  2. Tell me about a time data analytics found something sampling would have missed.

    Why they ask

Modern audit relies on full-population testing.

    How to answer

Give the test, the tool, the result and the action.

    Show a sample answer

At a Lagos bank, we ran every vendor's bank account against staff payroll accounts in Excel and SQL. We found three vendors paid into accounts that matched staff accounts, worth about ₦27 million in a year. A sample of 25 payments would almost certainly have missed it. It went to the fraud team.

  3. How do you stay independent when you work closely with the finance team?

    Why they ask

Internal auditors often sit near the people they audit.

    How to answer

Mention reporting lines, no operational roles, and declaring conflicts.

    Show a sample answer

I don't take on any operational tasks for teams I audit, even when they're short of people. I report to the head of audit, not the CFO, and if I've worked on a process recently, I say so and someone else audits it.

Situational questions

Hypotheticals about problems you'd meet in the job.

  1. What would you do if you found evidence of fraud during an audit?

    Why they ask

They need to know you follow protocol.

    How to answer

Stop, preserve evidence, report to the right person, do not confront.

    Show a sample answer

I'd stop that line of testing, secure copies of the evidence and report to the head of internal audit straight away, following the fraud response policy. I wouldn't confront the person or discuss it with the auditee. Investigation is a separate process, often with legal involved.

Remote work questions

How you'll work from Nigeria with a team elsewhere: hours, power, internet, communication.

  1. How do you get good audit evidence when you can't visit the site?

    Why they ask

Remote audits rely on evidence from people you don't meet.

    How to answer

Mention system reports with parameters, screen-share walkthroughs, independent sources and re-performance.

    Show a sample answer

I ask for system reports with the query parameters visible, or I watch the auditee run them on a screen share. I reconcile populations to independent sources like the bank. For physical things, like a stock count, I ask for a live video walk-through with random items I choose on the call.

  2. Your audit team is spread across London, Cape Town and Lagos. How do you keep work moving?

    Why they ask

    Collaboration across time zones.

    How to answer

Shared trackers, written updates, clear ownership.

    Show a sample answer

One request list and one issues log that everyone updates, a short written update at the end of my day, and calls only for walkthroughs and closing meetings. Lagos and London overlap all day and Cape Town is an hour ahead of Lagos, so that's an easy team to run.

  3. How often can you travel, and do you have a passport?

    Why they ask

Some global employers expect regular trips.

    How to answer

Answer honestly, including visa lead times.

    Show a sample answer

I have a valid Nigerian passport and a previous UK visa. I can travel a few times a year with about eight weeks' notice for visa appointments, and I'd need an invitation letter from the company.

Remote interview tips

Prepare two finding stories with numbers: one where you found a control failure and one where data analytics found something. Use condition, criteria, cause, effect and recommendation when you tell them.

Revise IT general controls even if you are not applying for IT audit. Interviewers almost always ask.

Answer the travel question before they ask: mention your passport, recent visas and how much notice you need. It removes a worry that global employers have about Nigerian candidates.

Questions people ask

Is there a test in internal audit interviews?

Often a case: a process description with control weaknesses to find, or a short finding to write. Some employers add an Excel analytics exercise.

Will they ask about the IIA standards?

Sometimes, at a general level: independence, planning, quality and reporting. Know the main ideas rather than numbers of standards.

How do I explain Nigerian bank audit experience abroad?

Translate it into risks and controls they recognise: KYC, transaction monitoring, IT access, payments. Mention regulators by role, such as the central bank, rather than assuming they know acronyms.
