Remote financial controller jobs exist and some of them are open to people living in Nigeria, but there aren't many, they are senior, and most go to people who have already run a month-end close for a multi-entity group. If you are a chartered accountant with five or more years of experience, you have a realistic route. If you qualified recently, the remote controller seat is still a few steps away.

The role is attractive because it pays like a management job and sits close to the CFO. It is also one of the harder finance roles to do from abroad. Controllers often sign off on numbers, approve payments and deal with local auditors, tax authorities and regulators, so many employers want them in the same country.

This guide covers what remote controllers actually do, how much of the market is genuinely remote, the qualifications and tools employers ask for, the ladder from senior accountant to controller, and how to apply from Lagos, Abuja or anywhere else in Nigeria without wasting applications on roles you can't legally take.

Quick answer

A remote financial controller runs a company's accounting function from a distance: the month-end and year-end close, financial statements, internal controls, audits and often tax compliance. Nigerians can get these roles when the ad accepts applicants in Nigeria, Africa or anywhere. Expect to need a professional qualification (ICAN, ACCA, CIMA or a CPA), at least five years in accounting, strong IFRS or US GAAP knowledge, and cloud ERP experience such as NetSuite.

What a financial controller does (and how it differs from an accountant)

A financial controller owns the accuracy of a company's books. The accountant prepares the entries and reconciliations. The controller designs the close process, reviews the work, signs off the financial statements and answers to the auditors when something looks wrong.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics groups controllers with financial managers and describes them as the people who direct the preparation of financial reports such as income statements and balance sheets, prepare reports for regulators and often oversee the accounting, audit and budget departments.

In a remote job, the day-to-day work usually covers:

  • Running the monthly close calendar and making sure every entity's books close on time
  • Reviewing account reconciliations, accruals, prepayments and intercompany balances
  • Preparing consolidated financial statements under IFRS, US GAAP or a local standard such as the UK's FRS 102
  • Maintaining internal controls, approval limits and segregation of duties
  • Acting as the main contact for external auditors
  • Coordinating tax filings with outside advisers
  • Improving processes and systems, often inside an ERP such as NetSuite
  • Managing a small team of accountants, some of whom may be in other countries

Controller, finance manager or CFO?

Titles vary between companies, so read the duties rather than the title.

RoleMain focusTypical experience
Senior accountantPreparing entries, reconciliations, reports3 to 5 years
Assistant controllerRunning parts of the close, reviewing others' work5 to 7 years
Financial controllerOwning the books, statements, controls, audit5 to 10 years
Finance director / CFOStrategy, funding, board, investors10+ years

The experience column is a general guide, not a rule. Small startups sometimes hire a "controller" who is really a senior accountant, while large groups use "controller" for a regional head. The adjacent finance manager career guide covers the role that overlaps most with controller work in smaller companies.

How remote-friendly is the financial controller role?

Less than most finance roles. Expect this before you start applying.

An independent analysis published in September 2026 by Remote Job Assistant read controller postings directly on company hiring boards and found that only 5 of 25 US controller postings it checked were verifiably remote. All five were at software companies, and four of the five were deputy or specialist roles rather than the top controller seat. The sample was small and leaned towards tech and large companies, so treat it as a signal, not a census. It does match what you will see on most job boards: plenty of roles titled "controller", far fewer that are remote, and fewer still open to someone in Nigeria.

Why many controller jobs are tied to one country

Four things push employers to keep controllers local:

  • Signing and approving. Controllers often approve payments, hold bank tokens and sign off on statutory accounts. Some companies only give that authority to people employed in the same jurisdiction.
  • Local rules. A UK or US controller has to know local tax, payroll and filing rules well. Employers worry that someone abroad won't.
  • Audit and regulators. Auditors and regulators sometimes want meetings in person, especially at year end.
  • Payroll and employment law. Hiring a full-time employee in Nigeria needs a local entity or an employer of record, which adds cost.

Where remote controller roles do exist

Remote controller and assistant controller roles cluster in a few kinds of company:

  • Remote-first tech and fintech companies that already employ people in many countries and run finance in the cloud
  • Startups and scale-ups that need part-time or fractional controllers rather than a full-time hire
  • Outsourced accounting and finance firms that run the close for several small clients from a distributed team
  • Companies with operations in Africa that want someone who understands both IFRS group reporting and the local context

A live example (checked 27 October 2026)

Xapo Bank, a Gibraltar-headquartered digital bank, was advertising a Financial Controller role described as "100% remote" and "work from anywhere" as of October 2026. The ad doesn't list country restrictions. It asks for a lot:

  • At least 5 years as a controller leading an accounting function
  • ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent (preferred)
  • IFRS and FRS 102, multi-entity consolidation across Gibraltar and the UK
  • Regulatory reporting to the GFSC and FCA, including COREP-type returns
  • Crypto asset accounting under IFRS
  • NetSuite as an essential skill, plus SQL or BI tools as an advantage
  • A dedicated workspace and reliable fast internet

The ad doesn't state a salary or whether the hire is an employee or a contractor. Ads like this change or close quickly, so check the live page before you apply. The example shows the pattern well: the roles that are open worldwide tend to be highly specialised.

What remote financial controllers earn

There is no reliable published salary figure for remote controllers based in Nigeria, so start from benchmarks and adjust.

SourceWhat it measuresFigure
BLS Occupational OutlookUS financial managers (incl. controllers), median, May 2025$166,570 a year
Remote Job Assistant analysisPosted base pay, US controller ads, September 2026$180,000 to $259,000 a year
Same analysis, citing Robert Half's remote boardInterim contract controller roles, US$55 to $90 an hour

These are US figures for people living in the US. A Nigeria-based controller hired by a foreign company will usually be offered less than US local pay, because many companies set pay by location. For scale only: the BLS median of $166,570 works out to about ₦227 million a year at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). Don't expect an offer at that level from Nigeria.

Senior finance roles open worldwide do sometimes publish ranges. On DailyRemote's Nigeria-filtered finance page, a senior FP&A manager role marked worldwide listed $115,000 to $132,000 a year as of October 2026 (company not named on the board). That gives one data point for a senior finance role open to Nigeria, not a promise of what controllers earn.

What moves your offer up or down:

  • Whether the company pays one global band or adjusts by location
  • Employee (through an employer of record) or contractor, since contractors carry their own costs
  • Industry: regulated finance, crypto and SaaS usually pay more than small agencies
  • Scope: one entity or ten, one currency or several
  • Full-time or fractional (a few days a month)

For a wider view of accounting pay across levels, see the planned guide on how much remote accountants earn.

Qualifications employers ask for

Most remote controller ads ask for a professional accounting qualification and treat a degree as the baseline.

Nigerian and international qualifications

  • ICAN (ACA). The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria qualification is respected at home and by companies with Nigerian operations. Foreign employers outside Africa may not know it, so explain it on your CV ("Chartered Accountant, ICAN, equivalent professional level to ACCA/ACA").
  • ACCA. Widely recognised in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and across Africa. ACCA requires exams, an ethics module and 36 months of practical experience. Many Nigerian accountants hold both ICAN and ACCA, which helps with foreign applications.
  • CIMA or ICAEW ACA. Both appear in UK and European ads. Xapo Bank's ad named ACA, ACCA and CIMA together.
  • US CPA. Common in US controller ads. It is a state-issued licence with its own eligibility rules, and US companies that hire internationally sometimes accept an equivalent qualification instead. Read the ad: "CPA required" is different from "CPA or equivalent".

The planned guide to accounting certifications for remote jobs compares these routes in more detail, including cost and time.

Accounting standards you'll be tested on

Nigeria adopted IFRS in phases: quoted and significant public interest companies from January 2012, other public interest entities from 2013 and SMEs (using IFRS for SMEs) from 2014. That gives Nigerian accountants from listed companies, banks and audit firms a real advantage for IFRS-based roles in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

US companies report under US GAAP, and UK private companies often use FRS 102. If you want US roles, study the main differences (revenue recognition under ASC 606, leases under ASC 842) and be ready to discuss them in interviews.

Skills and tools that get remote controllers hired

Technical accounting gets you shortlisted. Remote-specific skills get you the offer.

Technical skills

  • Multi-entity consolidation, intercompany eliminations and foreign currency translation
  • A fast, documented month-end close (many companies aim for 5 to 10 working days)
  • Internal controls design, and for US public companies, familiarity with SOX controls
  • Audit management: preparing the PBC (provided by client) list, answering auditor queries
  • Revenue recognition for subscription businesses, if you want SaaS roles
  • Cash management and bank reconciliations across currencies

Systems

  • ERP and accounting software: NetSuite, Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP
  • Close and reconciliation tools: FloQast, BlackLine or similar
  • Spend and payables: Bill.com, Ramp, Expensify, Pleo
  • Data: advanced Excel or Google Sheets; SQL and BI tools such as Looker or Power BI are a growing advantage

Many Nigerian finance teams run Sage or SAP on premises. If you have only used those, spend time on a cloud ERP. NetSuite and Xero both offer learning resources, and a sandbox project on Xero is cheap to set up.

Remote working skills

  • Writing clear close memos and variance explanations that a non-accountant CEO can follow
  • Documenting processes so the close runs when you're offline
  • Managing a team across time zones through Slack, Teams, Asana or Jira rather than desk-side chats
  • Saying "no" to an urgent payment request that skips the approval process, politely and in writing

The career path from accountant to remote controller

Very few people get a remote controller job as their first remote role. The usual route is a step-by-step move up, often starting with remote work below controller level.

Step 1: Build the local foundation

Work in audit (a Big Four or mid-tier firm) or in financial reporting at a listed company, bank or multinational. You need hands-on IFRS reporting, consolidations and audit exposure. Get ICAN, ACCA or both.

Step 2: Take a remote senior accountant or accounting manager role

These roles are more common than remote controller roles and open more often to worldwide applicants. They prove you can close books for a foreign company on its schedule. The remote accountant career guide covers that step, and you can browse remote accounting listings that show where applicants may live.

Step 3: Move to assistant controller or fractional controller

An assistant controller role at a remote-first company is the most natural stepping stone. The alternative is fractional work: running the books and close for two or three small startups for a set number of days each month. Fractional work builds controller-level experience quickly but means finding clients, invoicing and handling your own tax.

Step 4: Apply for controller roles

By now you should be able to show a track record: "Owned the month-end close for a three-entity group, reduced close from 12 to 6 days, managed two clean audits." That is the evidence remote hiring managers look for.

Example (hypothetical): Funmi is an ICAN and ACCA member with six years at a Lagos audit firm and a listed manufacturer. She takes a remote senior accountant contract with a UK software company, closing its books under FRS 102. After 18 months she has rebuilt its close checklist and moved the company onto NetSuite. She uses that work to apply for assistant controller roles at remote-first fintechs open to EMEA applicants.

Working as a remote controller from Nigeria: the practical side

The work is the same as anywhere else. The conditions around it are not.

Time zones and the month-end crunch

Close week is when a controller must be reachable. Plan your hours around the company's base:

Company baseTime difference with Lagos (as of late October 2026)Close-week reality
UK (GMT in winter)Lagos is 1 hour ahead; same time in summer (BST)Easy overlap
Gibraltar, Central Europe (CET)Same time in winter; Lagos 1 hour behind in summerEasy overlap
US East5 hours behind in summer, 6 from 1 November 2026Evening calls in Lagos
US West8 hours behind in summer, 9 in winterLate nights for live calls
Dubai3 hours aheadEarly mornings for you

With a US East Coast company in winter, a 10am New York close meeting is 4pm in Lagos. Board meetings and audit committee calls can run late into your night.

Power, internet and security

A controller who drops off during year-end audit fieldwork is a problem. Keep an inverter or solar backup sized to run your laptop and router for a full working day, and use two internet providers or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot. Starlink is available in Nigeria if your area has weak coverage (check the current price first).

You'll often hold access to bank portals and payment approvals. Use a password manager, hardware or app-based two-factor authentication, and a laptop that only you use. Employers will ask how you protect financial data, and "my laptop is shared at home" ends the conversation.

Employee, contractor or fractional

A foreign company can hire you as an employee through an employer of record (EOR) such as Deel or Remote, or as an independent contractor. Controllers who will approve payments or sign statements are more often hired as employees, because the company wants clearer accountability. Before you accept either, read the difference between contractor and EOR employee arrangements.

As a contractor or fractional controller, you'll handle your own Nigerian tax. The guide to tax for remote workers under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 explains your obligations. For getting paid in dollars and the fees involved, see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria.

How to find and apply for remote controller roles

Controller roles are rarely posted on mass job boards with clear location rules. Search where the companies post.

Where to look

  • Company hiring boards: Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable and Workday pages of remote-first fintech, crypto and SaaS companies. The Remote Job Assistant analysis found every remote US controller role it confirmed was on a company's own board.
  • Remote job boards with location filters: check that "worldwide" or "EMEA" really includes Nigeria by reading the ad.
  • Your network: controllers are often hired through referral, from former audit colleagues, ex-managers and CFOs.
  • Outsourced accounting firms that run finance for clients in the UK, US and Europe.

Reading location rules

  • "Remote, worldwide" or "work from anywhere": open to you unless the ad says otherwise.
  • "Remote, EMEA": Europe, Middle East and Africa. Nigeria is usually included, but some companies only hire in countries where they have an entity or EOR coverage.
  • "Remote, UK" or "Remote, US": usually requires the right to work and live there. Skip unless you have it.
  • "Remote for the right candidate" with office days: a hybrid role, not for you from Nigeria.

Making your CV controller-ready

Hiring managers scan for scope and results. Lead with numbers:

  • Number of entities, countries and currencies you closed
  • Close timeline before and after your changes
  • Audit outcomes (clean opinion, number of adjustments reduced)
  • Systems you implemented or migrated
  • Team size you managed

Spell out ICAN as "Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria" and name the standards you reported under. If you want help reshaping a Nigerian-format finance CV for foreign employers, WorkRemote's CV and LinkedIn rewrite is part of Premium.

Interviews and tests

Expect a technical interview on consolidations, revenue recognition and controls, a case study (a messy trial balance, a failed reconciliation or a close-process redesign), and a conversation with the CFO about judgement. Practise with the finance manager interview questions, which overlap heavily with controller interviews.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying to every "controller" ad. Most are on-site or country-restricted. Read the location line before writing a cover letter.
  • Treating "remote" as "anywhere". A US remote role is often US-only.
  • Hiding your Nigerian experience. IFRS reporting at a Nigerian bank or listed company is real, relevant experience. Explain it clearly instead of downplaying it.
  • Ignoring US GAAP. If you target US firms, you need it.
  • Accepting payment authority without a contract. Never approve or move money for an "employer" before signing a contract and confirming the company is real. Fake recruiters sometimes target finance professionals to launder money through their accounts. Read the warning signs of remote job scams.
  • Underpricing fractional work. A controller's judgement is worth more than bookkeeping hours. Price by scope, not by hour alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian work as a remote financial controller for a foreign company?

Yes, when the ad accepts applicants living in Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide. Many controller roles are restricted to one country because of signing authority and local rules, so read the location requirements on the live ad before applying.

What qualifications do I need for a remote financial controller job?

Usually a degree in accounting or finance plus a professional qualification such as ICAN, ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW ACA or a US CPA. Most ads also ask for at least five years of accounting experience, including leading a close or a team.

Is ICAN enough, or do I need ACCA?

ICAN is enough for many employers with African operations, but some foreign employers don't recognise it straight away. Holding ACCA as well makes UK, European and Middle Eastern applications easier. Explaining ICAN clearly on your CV helps either way.

How much does a remote financial controller earn?

US financial managers, including controllers, had a median of $166,570 a year in May 2025 according to the BLS. Nigeria-based remote controllers are usually paid less than US local pay. Your offer depends on the company's pay policy, your scope and your contract type (employee or contractor).

What is a fractional financial controller?

A fractional controller works part-time for several companies, often a set number of days each month, running their close, reporting and controls. It suits startups that can't justify a full-time controller and gives experienced accountants a way to build controller experience remotely.

Do I need US GAAP to get a remote controller job with a US company?

Usually, yes. US companies report under US GAAP, and interviews often cover revenue recognition (ASC 606) and leases (ASC 842). IFRS experience helps, but be ready to explain the main differences.

Which software should a remote financial controller know?

NetSuite comes up most often in remote-first companies, followed by Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct and SAP. Advanced Excel or Google Sheets is expected, and SQL or BI tools such as Looker or Power BI are a growing advantage.

Key takeaways

  • Remote financial controller jobs exist, but far fewer than on-site ones, and only some accept applicants in Nigeria.
  • Most remote controllers came up through remote senior accountant, assistant controller or fractional roles.
  • ICAN plus ACCA, strong IFRS and a cloud ERP such as NetSuite make Nigerian accountants competitive; US roles also need US GAAP.
  • US pay benchmarks are much higher than typical offers to Nigeria-based controllers; check how the company sets pay.
  • Reliable power, two internet connections and strict security for bank access are part of the job, not extras.
